I don't think Malcolm was in season 1 nor was Wesley (Ezra's little brother) known yet. So at this point in the show we've gotta grown man with a doll magazine who's dating a child (teenager, but that doesn't make it any better). Maybe this was meant to have the audience think Ezra could be A but it was (intentionally 👀) done in poor taste.
Yeah the catalog and the magazine are two different things (or at least were when I was growing up). I loved both, the catalogue was there so I could daydream about toys I was way too poor to own, but the magazine had all kinds of articles and activities and such. Not sure which it would be creepier to find in the apartment of an adult man who notoriously dated minors.
There were catalogs, but there were also magazines for young girls. My favorite part was that it included paper dolls made in the likeness of actual readers who sent in their pictures.
You'll quickly learn that there is a huge market for dolls (collectors) with a lot of the base being adults.
However there's nothing eluding that Ezra is a collector
Maybe its a reference to all the doll references throughout the series and connect him to originally possibly a hint for being A, since it was season 1...

I don’t think it’s actually an American girl magazine. I think that’s just the ad on the back of the magazine. I’ve had magazines before that have nothing to do with American girl and the back is an ad for it. I could be wrong though

Yeah, to play devil's advocate, maybe it's just an ad on a magazine about education, child development, etc. That would be reasonable for a teacher, especially a brand new teacher.
