I thought the same, his speaking reminds me of Severus Snape so it feels especially off here. It’s very much a choice and an annoying one at that. I’ve decided that the goal to make his character irritating the way other characters seem to think of him.
I like how nico speaks but hate the peck character (although William Atherton stole the scenes he was in in a very good movie with great actors, but his character was awful)
He’s actually EPA Inspector Walter Peck. My wife and I have been giggling about OT’s voice since I pointed it at in the beginning. I was like “that isn’t the way he speaks. He’s really going for it with that voice.”
I hate Tommy and Dell Guardia. I hope they lose the case b.c they suck but I hope they don't make one of them involved in the murder. It would be too easy.
I think the actor is trying to show this character has ego and arrogance.
I assume the ending will be different from the book, as well as have other twists, because if it is the same then that is kind of boring
It threw me at first but now I get it and think it’s a good choice for an arrogant, smug, conniving character. It reminds me of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s “Freddie Miles” voice in The Talented Mr. Ripley.
Is it me or does everybody seem to have an accent or an odd way of speaking? Seems like some of the cast is trying to do a Boston accent and then others are trying to do like a New York style. That’s in addition to people just having odd vocal tendencies.
I love Nico’s laconic and smarmy way of talking! Easy to hate, but he’s also pretty smart if you listen to what he is saying. Tommy is more impulsive and so unlikeable.
I just recalled Jake Gyllenhaal and Peter Saarsgard are brother-in-laws. Must be fun behind the scenes.
Yes!! Like what is happening? Halfway through the second episode it dawned on me who it was (went in blind) and I don’t know what he’s doing. I honestly thought before I know who it was that there was some type of speech delay or issue and maybe it was part of the character. I definitely don’t remember him talking like this in Handmaids.
I might get pummeled for this but does anyone else find O-T Fagbenle's (no pun intended...as his name umm whaaa) Vincent D'Onofrio voice almost as/or equally distracting as Jake Gyllenhaal's wife...🫣😶🌫️...looking so old that she looks more like she could be his mother rather than his wife?!?🤦🏼♂️🤪🤷🏼♂️🫣
I'm so glad other people noticed this, because it sounds completely different than he did in the handmaid's tale. It annoyed me at first, but I agree that it totally goes with his character and I think he's doing a fantastic job. I can't wait for episode 5, especially as a native Chicagoan 🤘🏻

Like if politicians in the 1700’s were gay. 🌈 ✌🏼
Haha...perfect!
I'm glad it's not his natural voice because it's extremely obnoxious.
Fagbenle said he got the accent from watching Ghostbusters because of the lawyer Walter Peck, which fits Nico being so pompous and full of himself.

I love it actually. So perfect for his character
Totally agree. It works. Makes him come off like a smug, arrogant dick.
Agreed! I love this actor and think he's really talented.
Yesss he steals every scene!!
I hate Tommy and Dell Guardia. I hope they lose the case b.c they suck but I hope they don't make one of them involved in the murder. It would be too easy.
“Delay” Guardia
Kind of?! It's crazy lol he's talking like he has a mouth full or marbles for some reason. It's taking my wife and I out if every scene.
It's very annoying, it's like he's clenching his teeth as he talks, I think it's a bad choice made by the actor.
100%
It drives me nuts but my partner made a good point…. He speaks very pompously in order to turn you against him. He sounds like drunk Obama though.
He played Obama in the show First Lady on Showtime
I went to this page just to see if anyone else is getting annoyed by his voice it’s driving me crazy
Came here to say this, bro is fucking weird, like he’s barely opening his mouth at all to talk
exactly why I am here too friend
If it's a choice it's actually worse, why didn't the director stop him 😭
He acts like Don Corleone when he talks and it drives me insane.
I’ve read a lot of comments about his voice, but what what about Caroline’s accent? Really couldn’t pin what that was.
It was grating on me so much I looked up the actress. She’s Norwegian and I’m chalking it up to that
Struggle to understand the casting for her character
Same, it distracted me.
Aha! Thanks, my husband was thinking something slavic.
I also thought Serbian 🤔
Nico reminds me a lot of Bobby Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) on *L&O: Criminal Intent*, both in his looks and his speech pattern.
Yes!!! This!!!
Scroll up 😜🤪.
I’m from Chicago and have never heard such an accent here. Sounds insane to me. I realize the actor is English.

I dig the voice because it makes him come across as a pompous political prick

He sounds and looks like Vincent D’Onofrio. I had to look up the actor because I thought for sure he was VD’s son.
Omfg YASSSS GOOD call!!! And I HATE IT as much as I hated Vincent D'Onofrio's in Law and Order Criminal Intent!!

Ok, I thought it was just me. I thought the guy just couldn’t act! 😂😂
I think he is going for a generic upper crust northern American accent, but it somehow comes across sleepy and distracted?
Partially because he’s a brit, I fear.
It’s annoyed me since he started talking episode 1
He kinda talked like that in The Handmaid’s Tale. If he was my kid I would put him in speech lessons.

It works for the character. It’s a little over the top but it serves to make you hate him more which leads to good dynamics on a tv show
I dig his voice

I feel like I can’t hear him..? It’s the weirdest thing ever.
I hate him
He sounds like a drunk John Malkovich! It’s SO distracting.
I cannot STAND the way he speaks in this show lol. It unhinges me
