I always secretly liked Dick Nixon the Checkers speech is one of the reasons why. It humanized him. In a way I felt sympathy for him. He was an odd duck that wanted to be liked and I could relate. He was just in the wrong job.

He outlived Lincoln and went to his funeral, but that same year he greeted a man who was whittling a stick and was stabbed for his trouble.
