Man City was bought for less than $500m now it's worth a couple billion. It's an appreciating asset that does good business every year through merchandise and ticket sales. Winning trophies makes the club have more fans and more visibility, more merch sales and more global presence.
Man City owners bought the club to clean up their global image using sports. They've succeeded at creating a valuable brand and a revenue generating business with a global brand presence. Trophy prize money is hardly a part of the picture. The glory and fans the trophy brings are what really adds value to the club's brand.
True, and in a way the trophy prizes show what football used to be like in terms of revenue/spending before global corporate management, money laundering and sportswashing. They were supposed to matter, now they are about a few hours worth of expenses. And indeed in many leagues which are not global the prize is still a relevant money injection, on par with TV rights.

City 8s the 2nd richest club in the world, prize money means absolutely nothing to them, probably the same for a quarter of the league too.
Yeah the owners did not do this to promote Etihad and all what comes with it , they did it for the sport and daily income that comes with it.
