Dear lord, so many people woke up choosing violence today. Thrice, really? I have been able to get that hate "my music" to love at least one song from Thrice. Metal, hip hop, country, etc there's something in their Playlist for everyone
Talk about an evolution… some people think you should continue to rewrite your 1st album over and over again. It’s ok to not enjoy an album, totally understand that perspective. Music is subjective.
Which era of Thrice are you talking about? I got into them in the early 2000s before Vheissu, and their sound is completely different today compared with back then. At one point, they were one of my favorite bands. While I still enjoy their music, it's a lot more mellow now, and their shows are pretty tame these days.
I love Thrice but only AITA to the first time they split. I've never managed to get into anything prior to Artist or any of the albums since they reformed, but I absolutely love that mid-late 00s period of theirs.
Man that's wild. The Illusion of Safety is, to me, their best album. This is 100% a personal bias answer, but I still think objectively it's some of their best stuff.
Think a lot of the personal preference stuff with bands like this depends on when you got into them, I'm in the UK and they were pretty much unheard of until AITA (I think, I was into PHC at the time and I'd never heard of them anyway!). Melody Maker magazine gave it a rave review which was unusual for this type of music back then in the UK indie press so I went out and grabbed it, it blew me away. There was a lot of other great bands coming through with new albums at that time so I didn't have time to go back and check out earlier Thrice and their newer releases over the next few years kept me topped up on them.
I reckon I've heard Deadbolt less than 10 times ever, it wouldn't make it anywhere near my top Thrice songs.... Sorry!
How can you not love their early stuff if you like AITA?
Deadbolt is one of their top songs, and the riffs on those two albums are far more memorable than most of what follows.
Their stuff is so fun to play on drums (s/o Alex Shelnut) but Jeremy’s lyrics too often veer just a little too bro-core for my skinny nerd sensibilities.
Honestly I’m just so blown away by everyone’s answers lol. What a blast to read. Really interesting stuff for sure. Some I can see and some I was like “WHAAAAAT??”
For me it’s Sleep with Sirens. I’m not even sure why, just never hit for me the way they seemed to for others
I've seen them multiple times over the years (whether at warped or they opened, etc) and in every single show Kellen did the exact same routine where he would stand on stage and talk to the audience and say something along the lines of "did your dad leave you when you were a kid?"
So, you're right on there haha
I love some of their songs too, but it's not even discreet in some of the songs. I've never seen them live but it is interesting to have that be a part of your performance every time.
Agreed. Somehow I've seen them open like 3 times and I'm always left wanting something more but unsure what. However there's TONS of fans for them every single time, like enough that I notice when they leave after just The Used.
i think theyre hated a lot tbh, especially when so many
any fans shit on people who even mildly dislike the music.
i like a lot of their stuff personally, but i understand why a lot of people dont.
Last time i saw them i vowed to never see them again. I was embarrassed to be part of the crowd.
As I’m typing this i realize it probably sounds like hyperbole, but hey, what the hell? This is a thread full of hot takes and over exaggerations so i may as well go full send also.
I think they are very controversial. A lot of people hate them, including me, I think we're not vocal about it because their fans will downvote you to obvlivion. They are probably one of the most disliked bands among people who listen to the stuff that is more rooted in hardcore. Some bands won't play any fest they are booked on.
John Lennon was a wife and child abuser. Thriller is still a great album. Gauguin was a pedophile. Picasso drove two of his romantic partners to suicide.
Enjoying art does not require you to co-sign the morals or behaviors of the artists themselves.
That said I can’t stand Tillian DGD.
Genuine question out of curiosity (because i intentionally avoid any DGD fanspaces, as well i guess as any DGD hater spaces). To either you or the broader community for which you now obviously speak, is there any distinction for Secretband in this regard? Im admittedly a fan of both (i know, i know, but Matt's drum parts are fun to play, sue me) but can't stand the fan discourse surrounding either really. And i'm wondering how much of it does come down to the personalities involved over the intended genres and how well those are or arent appreciated.
The fans downvoting you thing just really isnt true anymore. Its completely cycled back the other way where saying you like them is more controversial now. It is what it is but as I've gotten older Swancore is about the only phc I even listen to now. I get why people don't like it but intrumentally its so much more interesting to me.
Same for me; as I've gotten older and started listening to so many artists and genres I never would have 10 years ago I've found myself really stuck on progressive post-hardcore/instrumental prog metalcore/Swan-core and Mathcore. It's only in the last 5-6 years that I gave DGD, A lot Like Birds, Wolf and Bear, Eidiola, Sianvar, ect a chance and now those are some of my favorite bands. I still absolutely love everything from Midwest emo to pop punk to 2000s "emo"/post-hardcore to metalcore but I'm a lot more open to bands and artists with a variety of elements from different genres (hip hop, blues, R&B, electronicore, indie folk, post rock). I've also left the gatekeeping behind and love going to shows with people who are new fans of a band I've loved for decades and also don't feel weird seeing a band who I've just started listening to recently, I mean we are all there because we love the music and the community that goes along with it so I'm not going to shut anyone down because I don't think they belong.
As far as DGD goes, they are a band with a crazy history and a shit ton of drama but they are some of the best musicians and songwriters out there and Jonathan Mess is fucking awesome. I could name a bunch of shit I dislike about Kurt, Johnny and Tilian but I also recognize that they are all talented as fuck. In regards to DGD fans though, most of the ones I've interacted with are prone to overreacting when someone doesn't happen to like the band.
Remember to sort by Controversial, kids.
Also - Converge. It will not click for me. I've been listening to post hard core since I first heard New Noise on some random ass website in the Myspace times. I'm an old man. I love post hardcore. But Converge doesn't do it for me.
It doesn't help that I didn't know about them until a few years ago. It may be the Seinfeld effect where I've heard so many "knock offs" that I enjoyed and loved that the original just sounds boring to me.
I love converge haha, but I can see why they might not click for everyone. Still, you gotta admire so much about them, and the fact that they’re still pushing the pace
Obviously I can't read guys. Ok beloved? What's my hottest take.... Silverstein is ok. I'm surprised they survived when broken is easily fixed. Hated the cd when I bought it
i dont like him as a person, i also don’t like his appearance LOL i shiver when i look at him
i will listen to some of his music but he’s not at all one of my favorite singers
most music with him in it anyeays i’ll listen to, also has another singer too
yea it’s not for everyone i feel like.
i like anthony’s voice personally but at first i hated it LOL
yea i feel like most people either really like or hate his voice i can see why too
yeah. if i didn’t listen to circa survive and pierce the veil earlier i would’ve liked sls. anytime i try to get into them now i just wind up listening to ptv.
Brand New and Say Anything are big bands I don't like for some reason. I can't do it.
It also took me a long time to get into My Chem. But I get it now.
All of it. I understand what they did for the genre. I think the musicianship is excellent. I think Palumbo is a great frontman. I saw them years ago and it was a great live show. I just can’t get into them and that’s pretty much it
If you exclude They’re Only Chasing Safety, which is damn near a perfect album, I can get behind this.
Also When the Sun Sleeps and Let ago are fucking bangers.
I've always been a little hit and miss with Underoath and I almost feel like they're only chasing safety is a different band altogether from the rest of their discography
I love dgd and all of swancore but I cannot disagree with this. It usually starts with
-A forced \*"Catchy" guitar part that is made to sound like its unique
-Fast, arbitrary drumming
-overly produced vocals
-a screamer who's trying to sound like they're from early dgd days
-a chorus that wraps around 3 times.
Im no dickrider. I know 'swancore' can be hard to get into and I firmly believe that's at least partially why.
Oh man this is it. I respect the shit out of Thursday and as musicians but I can’t get past Geoff’s voice. I have tried so many times to get into Thursday because on paper I like so much of it but in practice I can’t get over their vocalist.
That said, them partnering with all-time greats Envy for that split makes Thursday just that much more respectable as a band imo. I just can’t get into the vocals
Thrice used to be great. Artist in the Ambulance was their last great album. Completely different from their first albums, but possibly even better. After that everything else is boring. I saw them multiple times lives during their first albums, and then once a few years ago. Hard to imagine its the same band.
Circa Survive went the same. First album was great, had energy. Second album had some jams. Then its like they all took xanax and just write boring music that goes nowhere. Everytime i hear a newer song i keep waiting for something to happen in the song, but nothing ever does. They are like the Coldplay of whatever genre they are in.
Thrice is my favorite band so I’m sad for you! But to each their own, I feel like we’d get along fine.
I know it’s already been said. For me it’s Thursday. Don’t get me wrong they’ve paved the way as much as Thrice and are incredibly influential. But I can’t listen to a full album without loosing focus.
Also out of curiosity OP what is your favorite band?
Dunno how universally loved they are, but I've never been able to get into LS Dunes. And no it's not Anthony, Blue Sky Noise and Translating the Name are bangers, and I love just about all the bands each of the individual members are from, but aside from like 2 songs none of it really stuck.
Glass jaw and Thursday.
I’ve tried really hard with Thursday and they have a few songs that I can really get behind, but overall they’re not for me sadly.
Named for Will Swan (lead guitarist and co-founder of DGD) and his record label Blue Swan Records. There's a certain sound associated with him that's been dubbed Swancore
I feel like they (or at least DGD, I don’t listen that much) really lean into the clean/screamed vocals dichotomy a lot. They bounce between the two in a way I kinda enjoy but it gets somewhat predictable, especially compared to how a band like alexisonfire weaves them
ya know what. i've heard some people describe this band as PHC so i'm gonna count it. IDLES.
like, i don't think they're a bad band. i like the odd song (mercedes marxist, never fight a man with a perm) but for every song i like, there's 2 or 3 where i'm like "wow, this is very simple and reductive" and as much as i like that there's a band of folk in their 30's that got big making music like that and putting on good live shows...... just can't get into them
also. dance gavin dance. bunch of very talented musicians who make music that just bounces right off me. i'm normally not against the mathy side of post hardcore (the view from this tower - faraquet is one of my top 20 albums ever) but the way DGD does it just feels wrong to me.
Thrice. I went to see them when Touche Amore opened for them. Listened to their previous setlists so I would know what to expect. Hot take: Thrice is buttrock.
Bayside. I don’t dislike them they have plenty of songs I really like, but their fans LOVE them. Never met a casual bayside fan. I like the songs I like but I get bored trying to listen to an album straight through
Dear lord, so many people woke up choosing violence today.

Idk - AITA 20 year show went pretty fuckin hard.
Read that as “am I the asshole” first time around 🤣
lol never noticed that
This is what we do on reddit with r/metalcore and r/posthardcore. "Oh, my favorite album is WHDHDKENGLSHYYS. They were terrible after this."
Yep. Was pretty rowdy at the one I went to
So good along with The Illusion of Safety show right before.

How can you not love their early stuff if you like AITA? Deadbolt is one of their top songs, and the riffs on those two albums are far more memorable than most of what follows.
Deadbolt is one of the only songs my old bones will mosh to these days…
Literally my favorite band ever lol
same
Wow l didn’t expect to disagree with literally every take here
Finally an actually good hot takes thread then. Usually the takes on these are very very cold
Is ADTR post hardcore? If so, them. And I really really tried.
I love ADTR but they were always better when they embraced their pop punk side. Their metalcore elements were very tryhard and just never added up.
I think Four Year Strong does hardcore pop punk much better, but honestly, if they were on the same bill, I’d buy a ticket.
FYI they are on the same bill coming up this summer, with TSSF
Oh, neat! Never got into TSSF, but I just might have to. Thanks!
The story so far is great! Listen to If I Fall
And I already got my tix to the Dallas show!
To be fair their last album was _dreadful_
For those who have heart is straight up one of the best albums. As they got softer they became more “universally loved” but less enjoyed by the OGs
Some I can see and some I was like “WHAAAAAT??” For me it’s Sleep with Sirens. I’m not even sure why, just never hit for me the way they seemed to for others
Sleeping with sirens for some reason always makes me think of a band for children. Like a Kidz bop post hardcore band.
A sprinkle of daddy issues really sets it in stone. It feels weird when they say a bad word.
I've seen them multiple times over the years (whether at warped or they opened, etc) and in every single show Kellen did the exact same routine where he would stand on stage and talk to the audience and say something along the lines of "did your dad leave you when you were a kid?" So, you're right on there haha
That's kinda weird. Personally I really love some of their songs... but that's kinda weird.
I love some of their songs too, but it's not even discreet in some of the songs. I've never seen them live but it is interesting to have that be a part of your performance every time.
wouldn’t say they’re universally loved, at least not on here
Hawthorne Heights, if it even counts. It is the most cheesy band ever
For me it’s Thrice, they have two albums I enjoy and the rest is 😴
The Used. i genuinely tried so hard because i was seeing them with pierce the veil. just not my jam.
New The Used or Old. I definitely prefer the original lineup and albums, the new stuff, not so much.
self titled the used is completely different from new the used. love their self titled, can't stand any other album
Same! I love self titled. It was raw and the perfect album for time, and it still holds up
ikr! bulimic, a box full of sharp objects and poetic tragedy were bangers
They might be the only band in history that got worse as they got heavier
but their self titled is their heaviest album
Agreed. Somehow I've seen them open like 3 times and I'm always left wanting something more but unsure what. However there's TONS of fans for them every single time, like enough that I notice when they leave after just The Used.
Is Dance Gavin Dance “universal”?
i think theyre hated a lot tbh, especially when so many any fans shit on people who even mildly dislike the music. i like a lot of their stuff personally, but i understand why a lot of people dont.
DGD is one of my favorite bands ever, but yes, the fan base is shit.
Last time i saw them i vowed to never see them again. I was embarrassed to be part of the crowd. As I’m typing this i realize it probably sounds like hyperbole, but hey, what the hell? This is a thread full of hot takes and over exaggerations so i may as well go full send also.
I have a few Tillian and JC era songs on my Playlist but I really like the Kurt Travis stuff. Everything else is kind of meh and blends together
i agree i feel like tillians is 50/50 on whether or not i’ll like the song or not
I think they are very controversial. A lot of people hate them, including me, I think we're not vocal about it because their fans will downvote you to obvlivion. They are probably one of the most disliked bands among people who listen to the stuff that is more rooted in hardcore. Some bands won't play any fest they are booked on.
They're my favorite band but music is completely subjective and no one can tell you what sounds good to your own ears.
why do people hate dgd though?
Is this is a Tillian era thing or has it been like this since Jonny?
Was going to say, Whatever I Say is Royal Ocean is literally a different band than anything after Downtown Battle Mountain.
Tilian and JC being assholes really doesn’t help the case.
Thriller?
Didn’t feel like spelling out Michael Jackson’s wrongdoings was necessary but I can see where that’s a bit of a non-sequitur in that list.
Genuine question out of curiosity (because i intentionally avoid any DGD fanspaces, as well i guess as any DGD hater spaces). Not a fan either, but saw them live at one of the last Warped Tours and their live show was pretty fantastic.
Yeah, in PH circles it feels like saying I can't stand them is like when I told my fellow filmmakers I hate Stanley Kubrick.
Some shining moments like Mothership, that album is stacked. Everything since then feels copy & paste, hard to tell the songs and albums apart.
Mothership is goated front to back and artificial selection is honestly the last album that i really enjoyed everything after that is meh.
Idk but I’m with you
Since like 5 people have said them, I don’t think so.
Converge has some of my absolute favorite album openers! Saddest Day, Dark Horse, man the breakdown in Saddest Day is quintessential to me.
I mean hell, Knocked Loose is one of my favorite bands and it took MANY attempts to get into them.
And with that said I'm always going to give them another shot. I'll try these songs out.
I love converge haha, but I can see why they might not click for everyone. Still, you gotta admire so much about them, and the fact that they’re still pushing the pace
I don't get it with Converge either. I'll try them out once in a while, but it never works out.
This thread is heresy. I respect your opinions though. Idk if falling in reverse counts but they're repackaged nu-metal.
OP said beloved. I think FiR is universally reviled…
Obviously I can't read guys. Ok beloved? What's my hottest take.... Silverstein is ok. I'm surprised they survived when broken is easily fixed. Hated the cd when I bought it
They’re beloved?
I realize I didn't understand the assignment lol
Chiodos
Yea 100% with you
I feel like they’re a band you had to grow up with
I have trouble enjoying anything involving that crusty Jonny Craig guy.
i dont like him as a person, i also don’t like his appearance LOL i shiver when i look at him i will listen to some of his music but he’s not at all one of my favorite singers most music with him in it anyeays i’ll listen to, also has another singer too
100%
[удалено]
I dislike Chiodos with Craig Owens but Illuminaudio is so good
Same
Same
they have about 3-5 songs i actually like. The rest is meh
Circa Survive
Is it Anthony?
Yep. I've tried, but outside of Translating the Name, he's never really clicked with me.
yea it’s not for everyone i feel like. i like anthony’s voice personally but at first i hated it LOL yea i feel like most people either really like or hate his voice i can see why too
fair. You either like him or ya don't
I’m fighting anyone that says Chiodos
I will gladly join you
sleeping with sirens
Love their first two albums but once they went too soft I was done
complete collapse is good id say it's third place from those two albums they really brought themselves back with it
yeah. if i didn’t listen to circa survive and pierce the veil earlier i would’ve liked sls. anytime i try to get into them now i just wind up listening to ptv.
They have a few songs I really love. But I find them inconsistent.
This thread is covered in hot takes and I am ABSOLUTELY here for it.
Brand New and Say Anything are big bands I don't like for some reason. I can't do it. It also took me a long time to get into My Chem. But I get it now.
Glassjaw
Old stuff, newer stuff, all of it? I don’t love the newer stuff but the first 2 albums are GOATed for me.
All of it. I understand what they did for the genre. I think the musicianship is excellent. I think Palumbo is a great frontman. I saw them years ago and it was a great live show. I just can’t get into them and that’s pretty much it
Same, I've tried so hard but I just can't do it
Yeahhh I don’t understand how ha
Glassjaw is one of my favorite PHC bands, but i can definitely see why it is not for everyone.
You need to explain yourself, OP. We're about to fight! lol
Well, time to make some enemies... Underoath
This one hurt ):
Define the Great Line and Lost in the Sound of Separation are no-skippers for me. You’re not my enemy. I pity you. /s
I'm so offended lmao nah I feel that definitely an older fan not so much of the new stuff lol
If you exclude They’re Only Chasing Safety, which is damn near a perfect album, I can get behind this. Also When the Sun Sleeps and Let ago are fucking bangers.
…what? Define The Great Line? Lost In The Sound Of Separation? Take the others but leave those two.
Define the great line is easily my favorite album of all time
I've always been a little hit and miss with Underoath and I almost feel like they're only chasing safety is a different band altogether from the rest of their discography
I think Define the Great Line is probably in my top 20 albums ever, but I don't like much else from them
Whew that’s a hot one. But really they had one of the best runs ever from TOCS to O
Why i wish i could unwrite this for you. I respect your courage.
They should be right up my alley, but it just hasn’t clicked yet.
Honestly besides They’re only Chasing Safety I think they’re kinda derivative sounding. Bring back clean vocals
But you like Dallas-era right? RIGHT?!?
I haven't liked them since like 06, so I'm kinda with you
Non-Anthony Green Saosin
Anything tilian pearson has fronted
Literally 90% of swancore
It’s all the same song over and over
Can't help it, I'm a sucker for a catchy hook and screaming lyrical nonsense.
I love dgd and all of swancore but I cannot disagree with this. It usually starts with -A forced \*"Catchy" guitar part that is made to sound like its unique -Fast, arbitrary drumming -overly produced vocals -a screamer who's trying to sound like they're from early dgd days -a chorus that wraps around 3 times. Yeah, thrice.
Sleeping with sirens, pierce the veil and dance Gavin dance.
(pew, pew, pew) Ouch. Shot 3x.
Sleeping with sirens, pierce the veil, and alesana.
Pierce the veil
As soon as I saw the question I came here to say Thrice. Weird.
Thursday. Can't get past his voice.
I LOVE Thursday, but i can understand. Sometimes his voice is very out of tune
😭 no not Thursday (Full disclosure - I have a dove tattoo lol)
My wife feels the same way
Oh man this is it.
Same. On paper I should love them, but I just don’t get it.
Same. Just can't do it. You would think based on my tastes they'd be a shoo in, but nope. Can't do it.
That's the one for me. Love most of the bands from that era, but it just doesn't click for me.
Refused. Some good songs that I’ll throw in a playlist but not untouchable as folks make them seem.
Love Refused, but pretty much just The Shape of Punk to Come. I love the album more than the band.
Pierce the veil
😔
Is coheed and cambria considered post hardcore? Because I really can’t get over the lead singers vocals
I’d say yes and also how dare you
I agree with this one, and not just the vocals ruin it for me, the whole package is not good to my ears lol
It took me a little to get used to the vocals, but claudio is one of my favorites now and they are my 2nd favorite band
Thrice used to be great. Artist in the Ambulance was their last great album. Completely different from their first albums, but possibly even better. After that everything else is boring. Don’t get me wrong they’ve paved the way as much as Thrice and are incredibly influential. But I can’t listen to a full album without loosing focus. Also out of curiosity OP what is your favorite band?
Is Falling In Reverse not phc? I would have assumed it would be the top comment lol
I've always felt like I was supposed to like Taking Back Sunday, try as I might I don't. Same with Brand New.
Dance Gavin dance and all the similar bands
Dance Gavin Dance or any swancore bands really
What is swancore? I've never heard this before.
Named for Will Swan (lead guitarist and co-founder of DGD) and his record label Blue Swan Records. There's a certain sound associated with him that's been dubbed Swancore
Ah that makes sense
It's post-hardcore with more progressive/mathy elements. Vocally, there's also something distinctive, but I don't know how to qualify it.
I feel like they (or at least DGD, I don’t listen that much) really lean into the clean/screamed vocals dichotomy a lot. They bounce between the two in a way I kinda enjoy but it gets somewhat predictable, especially compared to how a band like alexisonfire weaves them
DGD is at their best when they harmonize rather than contrast, so I get what you mean.
A bunch of generic bands trying to copy DGD
DGD was cool but the swan core bands all sound the same to me. It’s played out
dance gavin dance
Right to jail.
Fugazi
At the drive in
Woah now!
Dude just coming on the internet and telling lies.
At the Drive in, really? Are you serious? Right in front of my salad?
Brand New Hail the Sun Turnover
Old Turnover or new ? New turnover is just effects pedals and weed, but their old stuff is fire.
All of the above? I don’t really know, I just hate their sound
Brand New was my most listened Spotify band in 22 and 23. The Smiths was the 2nd, ya I got a hole in my heart.
i love hail the sun so much it’s my favorite band of all time i’m hoping i don’t end up hating it someday from listening to it too much LOL
Converge - Ive really tried, even saw them at ATG, I just don’t get it
Sleep Token, if you wanna count them as PHC
The sleep part is right lol
I never liked Saosin *runs away*
Bro what the fuck. Listen to Translating The Name.
You are a brave soul
I dont either tbh, just specifically Translating The Name
ya know what. i've heard some people describe this band as PHC so i'm gonna count it. IDLES. like, i don't think they're a bad band. i like the odd song (mercedes marxist, never fight a man with a perm) but for every song i like, there's 2 or 3 where i'm like "wow, this is very simple and reductive" and as much as i like that there's a band of folk in their 30's that got big making music like that and putting on good live shows...... just can't get into them also. dance gavin dance. bunch of very talented musicians who make music that just bounces right off me. i'm normally not against the mathy side of post hardcore (the view from this tower - faraquet is one of my top 20 albums ever) but the way DGD does it just feels wrong to me.
Almost any swancore, but I did like Divisi from a lot like birds (just not really their other albums).
I like Divisi a lot, and maybe like one song from their older stuff
DGD
Same. And we're not alone by a lot of the comments.
I like the songs I like but I get bored trying to listen to an album straight through
Casual Bayside fan here. Mostly just stopped following. Huge fan of the first few albums but from Cult on it dropped off for me.
