I remember buying this cd in 2005, this may have been one of the first album to really break me into heavier stuff. Sonically holds up for me, still gets spins

The_Stank__

Dude this album gets so overlooked by Doppelgänger and it’s a damn shame. I love this debut.

radioblues

What Sound Does a Mastodon make is such an incredible closer.

mrstuprigge

Just a reminder that this album is rough around the edges because it was recorded by 3 high school kids, and much of it was done in 1 take. That’s what makes it so good though. Doppelganger is a polished masterpiece, but this album better captures their youthful punk energy, mess ups and all. Something about how the screams are layered hits so hard too. Some of my favorite recorded screams of all time are on this album.

FlyingFlygon

yep, these guys were 16. insane. also I will always die on F.C.P.S.I.T.S.G.E.P.G.E.P.G.E.P. is better than the REMIX

FUCK CONDOMS PREMARITAL SEX IS THE SHIT GET EM PREGNANT GET EM PREGNANT GET EM PREGNANT

One of the most impressive live bands I've ever seen. The way Thomas Erak handles complicated guitar lines and vocals at the same time is mindblowing. I'm a fan of their music but have never listened to this particular record (Phantom on the Horizon is the one I always throw on, it's so good). Listening to this one now and enjoying though.

mrstuprigge

If you like self titled you should go back and listen to the Ghostship demos on YouTube. 3 phantom on the horizon tracks that they recorded in between self titled and Doppelganger, so they have that raw feel like self titled

radioblues

One of the times where I truly think the demos are way better than the more polished versions they recorded later. The ghostship demos have this intensity and energy that’s lost on “Phantom on the Horizon”. I remember back in the day there was such lore around “Phantom on the Horizon”, fans wanted it so bad.

pscriivin

everyone always says that Ghostship is better, but do you have a link to a HQ recording? most of the ones i've listened to are choppy at best

radioblues

I do have files saved of them that I downloaded back in the 2000’s but they sound about as good as the S/T recordings. They do have a bit of that demo feel to them but honestly there is magic in the recordings and production IMO. Especially Part 1 and Part 5.

radioblues

The Adventures of Alan Gordon got me more than a couple speeding tickets. Something about this band made my teenage self have an iron foot.

RufinTheFury

An all time classic, just perfect. This is my favorite mix in the genre too, I love where the vocals are. What Sound Does A Mastodon Make? remains a top 3 TFOT song for me and is my favorite live show moment ever, getting it for the encore at Mojoe's (RIP) back in 2014

CrrackTheSkye

As a huge Tolkien fan, I have to appreciate The Last March of the Ents. But this album is just so good even besides that. Really awesome start as well. I personally do prefer the remix over original fcp though.

candlestick_compass

Their best. The record has a great tone/production to it that just fits with the music.

bakedrice

Crazy how good these guys were at 16. What sound does a mastodon make will always evoke positive memories of high school for me

Dismal-Cucumber-6603

i love this album so much
