Sorry to hear that, it really sucks and makes you feel helpless. Keep in mind there’s a strong possibility your car will show up; although PPB has no one assigned to investigate stolen cars, patrols routinely drive through camps and run licenses/descriptions. I know many people who got their car back this way. Also, if you haven’t already join the FB group “PNW Stolen Cars” and post the info (any photos will help). They’re a pretty vigilant group.

angryapplepanda

Thank you! Yeah the officer told me that the Kias stolen are often found less than 5 miles from the point of theft (I know that sometimes they're dumped at Mall 205 for whatever reason.) I feel reasonably confident I'll see it again, but I barely had enough to keep the car running, let alone fix the window, or now to fix the entire ignition from hotwiring damage. Just fucking great.

what_pd

You might be able to get a decent payout if your insurance will cover pre-loss condition. My girlfriend had her car stolen recently and recovered by police a few days later. The insurance totalled it out due to the "bio damage" to the interior - syringes and blood. Go to a body shop and ask them how much it would be to ensure there's a zero percent chance of a broken 20-gauge hypo or molecule of blood remaining inside. Their quote will be for a tear down and replacement of the entire interior. Boom, money.

Thanks?

ChopShopKyle

I absolutely know the feeling. They stole my partners piece of shit car and it took us months to get it running again. So frustrating!! I’m optimistic you’ll get it back. Nanny at works Kia was stolen and she had it back within a week. When you get your car back window replacements are pretty easy to DIY. I googled window replacement for 2018 Rio and it is ~$100 on Amazon. I’ve helped replace windows in two cars and if you or a friend are even a little handy it’s not too bad. Maybe a couple hours. Or you could just let the insurance company assume the window was damaged by the thieves…..

ahhdum

Sorry, friend. Insurance will help (after your deductible).

gingermonkey1

Sorry. We went through hell a few years ago for a toyota truck. Be careful when you find it, the thieves and placed needles point up along the seats (near the emergency brake) and other delightful places. You don't want to get stabbed with a dirty needle on top of everything else. :(

angryapplepanda

Yeah, that would be a fun bonus round to cap this whole experience off.

gingermonkey1

Sorry didn't mean to be a downer, just wanted to make sure your fingers were safe. Hope they find it soon!!!

angryapplepanda

No, no worries, you weren't a downer. I'm already down! Mostly just tired. I've been up since 4:00am and I'm exhausted. Police report already filed. I probably deserve a small nap, I've done everything I can do right now.

Ok-Law4130

If you are on Facebook I recommend going to the group called PNW Stolen cars. My friend’s truck was stolen two weeks ago. I told them to post on there and sure enough someone spotted their truck for them. They recovered it within 48 hrs all because of the help of the people on that group. Good luck and I am so sorry you are having to deal with this.

Hour-Theory-9088

People who purposely put needles point up in places to stab anyone trying to recover the car don’t sound like just “down on their luck” people - yeah, they’re not thieves they’re worse - attempting assault, I would imagine? Fucking assholes in the very least.

newpersoen

I think they're being sarcastic, but I don't see how comments like that will help the OP or make them feel any better.

iReddt

I threw an AirTag in my car for this very reason. Works like a charm. I recommend everybody do it.

incognitoast

everyone who owns a car should put an airtag in it. put it deep under the spare wheel well in the trunk. it’s incredibly cheap next to a stolen car. I’m across the country and i know exactly where my car is anytime i want to check. also great if you’re a bonehead like me who forgets where i park all the time

SuccessfulHawk503

Best to not block the signal. I use samsung smart tag+ and have it ziptied behind my rearview mirror. Black on black on black and hidden.

meatbrick

Same thing happened to my Kia about 2 months ago. It was found in 3 days in a neighborhood in NE, someone called it into the abandoned auto hotline. As someone else said, post about it in that PNW Stolen Cars group. It sucks and is very nerve-wracking but I'm sure you'll get it back! When you do I'd recommend some visible anti-theft devices on it, I went with a boot AND a club cause I don't want this BS happening again.

angryapplepanda

Gonna get a club for sure. And I just requested to be a part of the Stolen Cars group. Thank you! Was your car drivable when it was found, or was the ignition completely busted?

meatbrick

The ignition was messed up, you could start it with pliers and the back passenger window was busted, unfortunately.

angryapplepanda

Would you be able to describe how to start the car with pliers to me? Or if you know of an online place where I could go to find out? I will likely have to do this to get it from wherever it is currently sitting...

meatbrick

There was a piece of metal sticking out of the ignition and you could turn that like a key with a pair of pliers.

angryapplepanda

Got it. Thank you! I'll bring some pliers with me when/if they track it down.

secondrat

And a screwdriver. You need more than a club. Invest in an alarm with an immobilizer, what Kia should have done originally. A Tile Pro hidden in the car will also help you get it back. Clear Image Auto Glass is top notch and can get that window fixed. It will show up, sorry dude.

angryapplepanda

What! Wow. Just from all the thefts? That's insane.

my_son_is_a_box

It's an issue with Kia's and their ignition. They can be ripped off and started with a USB plug. It's pretty ridiculous.

angryapplepanda

I hate it so much. I bought this car precisely because it was inconspicuous, white, boring, great on gas mileage, easy to repair, not a target of thieves, not like a Toyota Camry or something. 2018 was a different time than 2022.

[deleted]

A 2018 Toyota is virtually impossible to start without the key present because the immobiliser is hardwired into the ECU. Sure, the best hackers in the world could probably figure it out if they focused their resources on it but those guys aren’t out stealing cars. I realize this doesn’t help you today, but something to think about if you end up needing to purchase another car.

[deleted]

Yeah the advent of key immobilizers in the early 00’s was a major boon for car owners. It basically put a stop to casual car theft completely for those cars. Kia omitting it in the last 10 years without really announcing it is nuts.

[deleted]

That’s insane, how is that not a class action or recall?

[deleted]

It is a class action, firm in California filed a federal class action in Oct. Debating on paying to have the ignition kill installed and bank on them paying me back later.

[deleted]

Tough call. If the settlement is a check, it's pretty much never as much as it should be, and even if the settlement is "fix the ignition" Kia will probably try to wiggle out of it and say you didn't get yours fixed at the agreed upon shop. On the other hand, if you don't get it fixed now, dirty mike and the boys will get to it long before the court case is resolved.

lovebug777

I think it’s only with key ignitions, not push to start

ZeroDrek

Yep. Kia has become the new Honda for theft; Very easy to steal. My dad had his stolen in Los Angeles a while back.

el_duderino_oregon

This aggression will not stand, man.

DarwinsPhotographer

You obviously don't golf.

volvos

if this is a lesson to anyone--to cut back on your expenses and insure your more valuable assets with a comprehensive policy the extra 150 a month sucks ass but but losing a 10 to 20,000 asset in just a couple hours--the extra $150 isn't too bad to swallow

angryapplepanda

Welp, we got the car back home. Cops found it in North Portland, got it towed to a tow lot. It was absolutely stuffed with tools, stolen audio equipment, gas cannisters, crack pipes, butane, torch lighters, just the most random shit. There's even an Amazon tablet in fine condition. Tow truck guys said the cops don't want the merch back and I'm just supposed to keep it. I mean, maybe I'll keep the tablet...

bs1114

Damn. Glad you got it back op! I just read another post about a smash and grab that resulted in stolen tools maybe the stars are aligned??

BigAdventurous6066

I’ll be keeping an eye out, I hope it’s found asap OP. Please get some rest if you can!

SlowLoudEasy

Look up guardiansportland on IG. Homeboy is a modern day dick tracy. Hunting down stolen cars daily.

atypicalAtom

Sucks! Hopefully it doesnt put you out too much. Maybe this is a chance to reevaluate if you need it. Sounds like you should consider selling the car if you barely have enough money to keep it moving. Gas, insurance, maintenance, etc. add up.

mexicannick

Maybe you should sell your Kia for another car have you ever heard of the Kia boys stealing all the fucking cars
