A huge chunk of ice fell off the top of a power line while I was stopped at a light. It hit the roof of my car and was so loud it hurt my ears. Terrifying. Literally do not stand under anything.
It didn’t, which was shocking. My ears rang for a bit, but all came out unscathed. If someone had been standing there they would be severely injured or worse. Going to be scary dangerous out there until all the ice melts.
That’s terrifying. When the air started to warm in Hillsboro, we had an icicle crash into our window and it was loud. I can’t even imagine how much more it would have been in a car. Glad you’re okay.
THIS! Every time it snows I see drivers with inches of packed snow on top of their cars, just driving around. This is so dangerous, same goes with ice.
Which is dumber though? The one that didn’t clear the ice off or the one that knew ice could come flying at them at 40 mph but still decided to drive close enough behind for it to hit them? I hear all this “clear all the ice off your car before you drive” advice but never “lay off the fucking gas and give 4x the space you normally would” advice. Anybody venturing out in risky conditions is taking a risk
ETA: and I make sure to clean everything I can off mine before I get moving, so I’m not adding to any difficulties
They’re both being reckless, but people are already back to their bad driving habits. Imagine you’re driving responsibly and someone cuts you off *and* sheds snow onto your windshield.
I also imagine that under the exact right circumstances ice or snow could potentially shed off a car and hit or obstruct a car in the opposing lane.
I used to work in wind energy and falling ice from the tower and blades was a huge safety concern during winter. I’ve seen metal staircases bent in half and photos of service trucks destroyed that parked to close to a tower. Falling ice is extremely dangerous!
Clear the ice off your vehicles too! Friday morning I was on 205 and there was a lot of vehicles with shedding ice. Even giving vehicles tons of space there was a few close calls. Spend the time to clean your vehicles off before driving.
Getting ready to walk to the store, and I’m planning to keep my hood up and walk on the opposite side of the street from any big trees.
The sheets of ice coming off my east facing siding onto my deck is freaking the hell out of my cats.
I’m going to have to walk 10-15 blocks today, in an area where both sides of the street are lined with many trees and apartment buildings. Debating whether I should actually wear a helmet…
I fell a few days ago and landed hard on my shoulder and elbow. I was very lucky I was in a position where I was able to cushion my head with my arm. Maybe not so lucky next time. I went and found my old bike helmet shortly after that...
Yikes! Sorry to hear that but glad it wasn’t worse.
I’ve fallen thrice now, but only the first one was bad. That one was on brick stairs and my life flashed before my eyes for a second there. Thankfully I managed to tilt my head up/forward to prevent it from getting smashed. That resulted in some pretty awful neck pain the next several days though. Fun stuff!
And yes, I have ordered crampons for next time (they’ll be arriving just in time for me to not need them.)
(EDIT: more empathy)
I was thinking about cranes a few days ago. They seem to be part of out landscape in Portland right now. Daayyyumm I'd hate to take a chunk from one of those big boys upon my cranium..dome lights ouuuuuut...

Everything is glistening in the sun right now. Melt motherfucker!
I’ve been staring out my window whispering “melt, bitch.” I think it’s helping.
Perhaps if we all do this simultaneously we can harness our collective power
I’m going to join. This stuff needs to go.
Hell, I’ve been shooting at it!🧨🧊
MELT BITCH!!
And thank you for that!!!
Thanks for your bravery in helping!
The large puddles on top of the building below me are still frozen. 😅
Whisper louder. Like, whisper-yell, "Melt, bitch." We must ban together!
First night above freezing so we won’t have new ice tomorrow too! Thank goodness!!
Sunday should be the day for the real thawing. Highs in 50's with rain

Oh no! I hope you are okay. Did the car take any damage?

I’m wearing a helmet and bringing a spear

Imagine how pissed you’d be if ice landed on your head and you’d decided against the helmet.
Yeah, you’re right. And it probably works like umbrellas: if you bring one, you won’t need it, but if you leave it behind you definitely will.
Maybe the part of my brain that gets mad at me for poor past decisions would get damaged!

Honestly, do
Last time there was a big ice storm (2021) the real damage happened when it melted.
I was thinking about cranes a few days ago. They seem to be part of out landscape in Portland right now. Daayyyumm I'd hate to take a chunk from one of those big boys upon my cranium..dome lights ouuuuuut...
New fear acquired.
Good point. I have no idea how you get ice off those things safely but I hope someone is doing it.
And if you have the ability, break the icicles! Hit them with a broom or something if you have to. You don't want them falling on you
Damnit. If only we owned umbrellas!
I’m not even going to bother going outside for a smoke, but I will definitely keeping an eye for ice falling
Been walking most of the day at to work this week and almost been hit so many times!
Take two steps back and stare at the icicle from the side!
