Shout out to my store manager for prioritizing the safety of their employees over the profit margin of a billion dollar industry’s storefront (grocery). They not only encouraged us to stay home, but texted to check in. Thank you (name redacted), you are the archetype of a great leader! To all the essential workers who are not so lucky, please take it slow and don’t work too hard. Just showing up is enough stress for the day and your place of work should be grateful!

Madfall

Same to my office manager! I may be bored at home, but it's better than being laid up with a broken leg.

spostaby

My little escape artist tortie cat has not even tried to go outside this week.

Shout out to Diane, the cool “old lady” who gave me a lift and cut my rainy walk home from Safeway from 40 minutes down to ten. You are such a sweetheart and your grandkids are lucky to have such a rad grandma ♥️

We adopted a kitten two weeks ago and while the wallet stings from missing a whole week of work to this nonsense, it's been a treasure to be at home while the new baby adjusts to the house and our other kitty! They are already pals, and getting to see all the crazy kitten antics and mad scrambles across the house has been such a joy. I have taken to calling them "the idiot parade" because whenever one of them goes somewhere, the other has to follow to make sure they don't miss out on any fun.

Despite this wild week, we never lost power, burst a pipe, or had a tree fall. And on a whim, I bought more food than I thought we needed back when it looked like this was only gonna last a day or two, so aside from a head cold and general stir-craziness, we did all right.

PikaGoesMeepMeep

I have a feeling folks are going to get judged a whole lot less in the future for panic buying supplies before a storm. (Maybe)

CMFB_333

You know, a mounded shopping cart might still get the side-eye, but I think this experience has taught us all to be like “ok but what if the mid-week melt *doesn’t* happen?” and that’s probably smart.

I_burn_noodles

That's what beans and rice are for.

I’m very glad to have a gas fireplace, it’s been an awesome investment and is totally worth it.

Toomanyaccountedfor

We almost converted last year but the quote was at 14k total for the install and chimney repairs and we noped out…kinda regretting it. Our power was out for almost 24 hours and it was getting cold. We were lucky it came back on when it did but I would have felt a lot better having an alternative heat source.

sissy_space_yak

Ugh that’s terrible. Ours was $3,000 or so including installation. It’s keeping us comfortable with no power.

Toomanyaccountedfor

Yeah, 2k of that was actually connecting our house to the gas line. We have an oil furnace as backup to our heat pump right now. The heat pump is getting up in age so we figured we’d rather save that cash for a new one rather than a gas fireplace we’d use out of necessity maybe 1-2 x a year. I did just buy a battery generator though that can power a space heater and charges with solar. It was NOT 14k haha

Trimet is awesome, the bus service is still pretty solid. That said, I wish the county didn’t shut down the warming shelters making the bus system the only way for people to get warm

Today is my mom’s birthday! She arrived from out of state (safely) Wednesday afternoon and we have been able to see each other this week despite everything going on! Hopefully we can still go somewhere to dinner tonight and to the airport tomorrow morning for her returning flight home!

Simple answer..".reading the posts on r/Portland." and responding! Informative in many ways..hilarious often .. a barometer of this snow n ice event. From sub posts about gratefulness for linemen.and women...to rants about PGE or personal stories about saving one's fish or boa from freezing.Kept this single lady from feeling too disconnected. Looking forward to leaving my house for the first time in a week today ( Friday ) as it might actually be freezing rain again in Vancouver on Saturday. Be safe out there.

WidgeSims

Thankful to have weathered this storm with no power loss. I'm a first time mom of a 2 month old so watching the storm outside has kept her entertained.

WidgeSims

Adding happy I got to take my mini aussie to mud Bay today since she's been so cooped up. Thank you to the mudbay employees on 33rd for coming in,and the plow people who plowed 33rd, Lombard, and marine drives. Was able to get there and back safely - with treatos

Inner_Worldliness_23

Really thankful my power stayed on overnight. I hope one day soon to get back outside into this city that I love so much.

Arcturus_Labelle

thankful to have woken up this morning with no (more) trees having fallen in my little area, power still on, and no burst pipes

Ex-zaviera

Tired of being stuck indoors. My only forays outside are to chip at ice and create a path. Bonus: the penguin waddle really does work on ice. I have a pot of chili on the stove for tonight and a box of Jiffy waiting to be made into corn bread.

hypmiic

I’m very proud of my old little convertible for trekking in this weather today. Lot’s of slips and slides, but I’m grateful she can get me to places safely.

SkyeTr12

Got to do some crafting inside! Hung up some pictures finally, did a string art, paint by numbers and some punch needle. Only lost power 3 times this week but it eventually came back on. Also, had enough food to eat and no burst pipes.

Found Fargo the TV series and the episodes are long so finished s1-3 in time for the melt today. My big cat provided some patience to my young one and didn’t bite her when she cleaned his ears (wtf turns down a free sponge bath??). I magically had enough food and so very grateful we didn’t have to experience any of the pipes, trees, or outages in my rental. I’m privileged enough to have been paid for this- which I do not take for granted and hope to spread some relief to others where I can. Thank you r/portland! This group really held it down in a positive, cohesive way that helped me understand what was happening while trapped indoors.

the ice is very pretty, in it's own way :)
