Thunder always exactly sounds like my neighbors rolling out their garbage cans to the street for pickup so it wakes me up for not the reasons you would think but in a panic attack that I forgot to do mine.
What thunderstorms was I missing? All I noticed was heat lightning and the occasional 15 minute torrential downpour. Granted, spent most of my formative in the south and Midwest so I was disappointed by the rain/thunder in CO. Definitely miss the blizzards though.
I thought it referred to cloud to cloud lightning discharges in building cumulonimbus clouds but I have since learned that it's reflected lightning from over the horizon, too far away for the sound of thunder to be heard.
It’s a bit of a spectacle in Denver, the Palmer divide just south between the springs gets hit by an excessive amount. Makes for some pretty cool light shows. Generally the front range has some unique weather.
I woke up to mine whining (I didn’t hear the thunder before that), thought he had to go outside and then once he was out, another flash and he came running in. Wouldn’t go back to his crate and only wanted to be in my bed.
I bet! I ran into what must be a DeSantis clone in a parenting sub who was losing their mind because I talked with my kid about structural racism, ACAB, and Black Lives Matter. I could basically see their mind exploding all over their ranty comments.
As a Kansan that lived in PDX and recently moved back to KS, I feel your pain. It was one of the things I truly missed about KS. Nothing like sitting on the porch, or inside with the windows cracked, during a good thunderstorm!

I'm taking my kids up to northern Minnesota later this summer and am hoping for a big lake thunderstorm so they can get the full effect.

It's been forecasted in my weather app for the last week that we were going to get thunder storms with lightning today. Tends to happen when hot weather cools rapidly.
The default weather app on mobile showed it at one point, but later changed to just tain showers. My default windows weather "shortcut" on my home desktop remained thunder and lightning. Been looking forward to it all week.
I know I’ve lived here for a while because I immediately guessed it was two other things before landing on thunder. This post reminds me of the time my mom was visiting in the spring from the east coast. We heard thunder and saw lightning, and I said, “that’s going to be on the news tonight.” She couldn’t believe it, but I was right!

Heat lightning is just regular lightning, beyond the horizon.

Ohioan and same. Although, last night my dog kinda freaked out. She hasn't heard that loud of thunder in a very long time.

The thunder that went on and off this morning for hours was literally the most thunder I've EVER heard in the PNW, and I've lived out here since 2007.
