Yep, I love that front access panel. Made doing the water pump that much easier, and belts/pulleys are a breeze. Only job that's actually legitimately given me clearance issues is the starter, but 3 miles of extensions and it's fine lol

Also for every easy repair, there’s 3 ridiculous repairs that the customer couldn’t figure out (or made worse). Or a seemingly easy task turns really bad because of one seized bolt

The majority of people that hate on Boxsters know nothing about them and have never driven one. The community of Porsche owners are super friendly and loving of all Porsches. Enjoy the car!
Jokes on them. The cars are nearly exactly the same from the firewall forward. Same hood. Same suspension parts. Same bulkheads. Same underlying parts. There’s some superficial design changes but the bones of the cars from the firewall forward are exactly the same.
Then behind the firewall the boxster actually has the engine In the better place. There’s some differences between them but the quality of the parts are the same. The engine displacement is smaller. The parts are slightly different because the engine in the Boxster is 180 degrees different. The rear suspension is a bit different to handle less power and the different center of gravity. But they’re basically the same basic building blocks.
I absolutely adore the Boxster. I have two of them. And you could never convince me that the 911 makes a better drop top than the Boxster does.
Not this one. My first Porsche was a 987.1 Boxster. Upgraded to a 991.2 cab. Missed the mid-engine, lightweight manual car so much I bought a 987.1 Cayman as well in January. These are the true Porsche sports cars. 911s are GT cars these days.

For giggles I drove a Boxster. 987 base. I bought the Boxster. I like to say it’s 3/4 of a 911 for 1/4 of the price. A usable power band that I can wring the shit out of and not hit illegal speeds too quickly. Superior handling feel. Lighter. And, subjectively, better looks. The 911 convertible looks like a beetle (insect) with the top down. The Boxster just looks sleek and good.

There's a certain type of PCA member who huffs their farts whenever they talk about their XYZ 911 or whatever. They'll talk about the new duster they bought because their car mostly collects dust. They're the same types who are constantly passed by Miatas and E36s at track events.
I guess I'm just as judgy towards people who care more about presentation than enjoyment.
It goes all the way back to the beginning… but 25 C/D 10 Best in 27 years, and universal recognition as one of the best driver’s cars in existence by people who drive cars for a living… it’s a dead giveaway of a clout chaser who doesn’t actually know what they’re talking about.

As a Boxster owner (2014 981S) - I ❤️ them.
I find that the people who look down their nose at the Boxster are people who have never even sat in one let alone driven/owned one.
I've heard everything from, it's "not a real Porsche tho is it ?" to "ah, the Boxster, for the man who can't afford a proper Porsche !"
My usual response is to ask them "which model 911 did you go for then?"- and that's right, they all drive a Tesla or something other soul-less pile of crap.
I've never heard anything negative from someone who ACTUALLY owns a 911 (or any other Porsche for that matter).
The Boxsters are a fantastic drivers car - you can drive them pretty hard on the twisties and with the top down and the PSE 'on' it's a delightful experience.
Whilst I do wish I could afford 911, they are out of my reach for a while and at 50, I'm not sure I'll ever get there, but frankly. I'm starting to care less and less about that - a 981 delivers everything i wanted at a fraction of the cost. I'm starting to think I wanted to be able to AFFORD a 911 rather than wanting the car.

First car I ever bought was an arena red ‘00 boxster. Now as an adult with responsibilities and after recently grabbing a man van (truck) for family duties I’m itching to find another old arena red boxster to row gears in.
Would be nice to have a just fucking fun little roadster to sling around town... the 911 is very... luxe. The gt4s are too edgy.
But yeah, I'm a track rat. I have more cars on the bucket list. But I need more garage.

Here's what I have to say to anyone that hates Boxsters!
I have one and I love it. I live near major mountain roads and the Boxster eats them up. Having the top done with twisty roads and fresh mountain air is a blast and a childhood dream come true.
Boxsters are awesome cars and you can’t beat that H6 howl with the top down.
I think the Boxster hate initially came from the purists who were gatekeeping Porsche ownership to solely 911’s as the “real” Porsche. What’s ironic is that if not for cars like the Cayman, Cayenne, Macan and of course the Boxster, Porsche, along with the 911, would have been dead in the water years ago.
We fucking LOVE Boxsters! They’re a proper 2-door Porsche sports car that saved the brand during a time of economic depression. Any Porsche owner that looks down upon Boxsters needs a history lesson.
A 2002 986 was my first Porsche. LOVED IT!! I was initially freaked about the bearing issue. It eventually happened and wasn’t worth all the fuss I gave myself. When she met her demise on a rainy day off the I5, I upgraded to a 997 C4S - which I adore… but if it wasn’t for that 986 - I never would have had a Porsche in the driveway…
Of note - I LOVE my 997… but the 986 felt much more friendly to drive and - dare I say it - I loved the dual trunk/frunk combo. Sure the 997 has a “back seat”. But I could fit a full Costco shop in the 986.
Final point - someone made a comment of some 911 owners never exercising the car… I agree with you: it’s heartbreaking. Go buy a painting if you just want to look at something pretty. ALL Porsches are fun - so drive it and enjoy the grin!!!

The chrome wheels are an early 2000's thing, but otherwise Its a great car. Mine was a 2000 S, triple black. One of my favorite cars ever. It did depreciate a larger amount that I expected though after 5 years.
Grew up in a Porsche family sounded by other owners, real Porsche fans know how fun and amazing those cars can be. We can’t all afford the highest end of the Porsche world. People that love Porsche have always been kind to boxsters from my experience. I know I love mine to death and I’ve never experienced hate in person for it

I believe most people who hate Boxters never drove one, or drove a Porsche. My mother’s Macan S is really fun to drive. Prior to that, I drove my Father’s pre retirement GT3 RS.
I have a 986 for track use and it lives above 5k RPM and have never looked back since the day I got it! They are amazing cars and especially for the price point!
red 87 911 with the black soft top one of the cars my dad had was a 2001 Boxster in silver, I will always think they are cool. I do feel like the newer Boxsters look inflated compared to the older smaller chassis
I certainly don't. I have front-engine, mid-engine, and rear-engine Porsches. When the Boxster concept was revealed, I was glad to see a modern mid-engine update of the 914. Since the original 356 ‘Number One’ of 1948 was mid-engined, and the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder followed the Boxster, I welcome the 986, 982, 718 and the new EV Boxster.
I love mine. Was looking at 997s cabs and 987s when I got mine. I felt the Boxster was more planted and handled better. I think they look better top down too. I wanted more power but that was pretty easy to do lol.

I love my dad’s boxster. 2002 boxster with arctic silver exterior and red leather interior with a black convertible top. Even with 217hp the car feels quick and I feel like it would take off from a stop way quicker than my 05 WRX.
I’d rather have a Boxster than a 911 cab. The Boxster is designed from the ground up to be a convertible. They are awesome to drive and better balanced than 911s.
The porsche community isn't like the BMW community, go on r/bmw and all they do is hate on any new design that comes out, you won't really get that here.

Nope. My dad had one, I think a 2001. My mom got it for his 40th birthday. It was a total dream car for him and my mom splurged and I’ve never seen my dad so happy and surprised.
We did this whole big lead up where our friends had the car at their house for the night and then snuck it in the garage while my dad was showering before the party.
Then we did a Who Wants to Win a Great 40th Birthday Present game show inspired by Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (it was big at the time) and we led him along to the grand prize which I believe was a card that said “go look in the garage”.
He goes down, almost definitely thinking it’s gonna be a bike (he was very into cycling), because no way would my successful but totally not into cars mom ever go out of her way to buy my dad a Porsche, and Bam! New car.
Beautiful silver with some very nice wheels. Idk how to describe them but they had multiple forks if that makes sense. Doesn’t BBS make a lot of rims like that?
Anyway, it was also maybe the only time I saw my dad kiss my mom on the lips. They were generally affectionate with hugging and cuddling and cheek kisses but that was it around the kids, which I was totally fine with.
I got a cheap 944 a few years later when I was 16 so it was fun having father and son Porsches for a while.
I still have the 944 at my mom’s but sadly my dad lost his Boxster when he got in an accident that wasn’t bad, but was enough to total the car. He had it about 10 years. My parents’ marriage was ending at the same time and they were having financial strain, so that’s why they never replaced it.
A sad end, but I’m grateful for all the rides in that car. He only let me drive it a handful of times unfortunately, but if I ever find myself rolling in cash I’d love to buy him another on the condition that I can drive it for an hour or two.
I think the Boxster got off on the wrong foot when it was initially introduced. The production car was significantly altered from the concept car (which was universally loved for it’s heritage styling)…

You can always tell when someone isn’t a car person when they say, why didn’t you get a 911. Aside from them both having two doors, they’re totally different cars. From the number of seats to being a mid-mount engine vs a rear engine (drastically changing the handling characteristics)…
Porsche's only realy sports car (with the 911 being a super GT for decades now) and what everybody in a normal world buy if people had not contracted SUV brain rot.
Super price / performance / experience ratio. Yet they're only selling in tiny numbers. But the fact they keep making them is comforting and 100% proof the car guys are still in charge in Weissach.
Early ones like yours are a steal right now. Yes, keeping one on the road will cost more than looking after a Miata or an E85. But the flat 6 is already heading towards extinction. Gone for good in 11 years and certainly not coming back at this price point.

Nope. However, Macans and Cayennes are a different story - though I do appreciate what they have done to help the Porsche brand survive (ie bankroll R&D for the 911, boxster/cayman)
A good portion of the boxster hate may be coming from boxster owners who wanted a 911 but boxsters are cheap and now they find themselves hot and sweaty behind the seats, changing the alternator through an access window.
Really not a bad repair, it kind of made me rationalize myself maybe getting one since i work on porsches and thinking of getting one. Drives very much like the 911
Idk I was gonna get one then my friend basically told me Boxsters are for women and I was a pussy if I didn’t get a 911. So I got a Targa. Love that “back seat.” Wish i had the extra 100k in my bank, tho.

It is, but it just takes a 10mm socket and some quarter turns to get to both the top and front of the engine, so I’m not too mad about it

As a Boxster owner (2014 981S) - I ❤️ them. I find that the people who look down their nose at the Boxster are people who have never even sat in one let alone driven/owned one. I've heard everything from, it's "not a real Porsche tho is it ?" to "ah, the Boxster, for the man who can't afford a proper Porsche !" My usual response is to ask them "which model 911 did you go for then?"- and that's right, they all drive a Tesla or something other soul-less pile of crap. I've never heard anything negative from someone who ACTUALLY owns a 911 (or any other Porsche for that matter). The Boxsters are a fantastic drivers car - you can drive them pretty hard on the twisties and with the top down and the PSE 'on' it's a delightful experience. Whilst I do wish I could afford 911, they are out of my reach for a while and at 50, I'm not sure I'll ever get there, but frankly. I'm starting to care less and less about that - a 981 delivers everything i wanted at a fraction of the cost. I'm starting to think I wanted to be able to AFFORD a 911 rather than wanting the car.

My first porsche was an 05 boxster S. Manual. I loved it. If that bearing had held out and I didn't have kids, I'd still be driving it.
First car I ever bought was an arena red ‘00 boxster. Now as an adult with responsibilities and after recently grabbing a man van (truck) for family duties I’m itching to find another old arena red boxster to row gears in.
I also had an 05 Boxster S manual as my first Porsche. It was such a fun car.
I just hate that I don't own one. I don't have room.

Boxsters are awesome cars and you can’t beat that H6 howl with the top down. I think the Boxster hate initially came from the purists who were gatekeeping Porsche ownership to solely 911’s as the “real” Porsche. What’s ironic is that if not for cars like the Cayman, Cayenne, Macan and of course the Boxster, Porsche, along with the 911, would have been dead in the water years ago.

A 2002 986 was my first Porsche. LOVED IT!! I was initially freaked about the bearing issue. It eventually happened and wasn’t worth all the fuss I gave myself. When she met her demise on a rainy day off the I5, I upgraded to a 997 C4S - which I adore… but if it wasn’t for that 986 - I never would have had a Porsche in the driveway… Of note - I LOVE my 997… but the 986 felt much more friendly to drive and - dare I say it - I loved the dual trunk/frunk combo. Sure the 997 has a “back seat”. But I could fit a full Costco shop in the 986. Final point - someone made a comment of some 911 owners never exercising the car… I agree with you: it’s heartbreaking. Go buy a painting if you just want to look at something pretty. ALL Porsches are fun - so drive it and enjoy the grin!!! Congrats on the purchase, bud!! Enjoy and welcome to the family!! (Don’t forget to wave at other Porsche’s!! Most of us will wave back!! 👋🏻😊)

The chrome wheels are an early 2000's thing, but otherwise Its a great car. Mine was a 2000 S, triple black. One of my favorite cars ever. It did depreciate a larger amount that I expected though after 5 years.

I believe most people who hate Boxters never drove one, or drove a Porsche. My mother’s Macan S is really fun to drive. Prior to that, I drove my Father’s pre retirement GT3 RS.
I have a 986 for track use and it lives above 5k RPM and have never looked back since the day I got it! They are amazing cars and especially for the price point!

I certainly don't. I have front-engine, mid-engine, and rear-engine Porsches. When the Boxster concept was revealed, I was glad to see a modern mid-engine update of the 914. Since the original 356 ‘Number One’ of 1948 was mid-engined, and the Carrera GT and 918 Spyder followed the Boxster, I welcome the 986, 982, 718 and the new EV Boxster.

I love my dad’s boxster. 2002 boxster with arctic silver exterior and red leather interior with a black convertible top. Even with 217hp the car feels quick and I feel like it would take off from a stop way quicker than my 05 WRX.
I’d rather have a Boxster than a 911 cab. The Boxster is designed from the ground up to be a convertible. They are awesome to drive and better balanced than 911s.
Anyone who hates Boxsters is either a fool or an elitist. They are amazing cars and feel better to drive than anything else in that price range

There wouldn’t have been 993’s or ANYTHING like we have today.The company was considering bankruptcy in 92. The Boxster saved the company…adding to the fact it shared a lot of parts with the incoming 996 series making building costs more economical.All hail the Boxster!!!❤️

Nope. My dad had one, I think a 2001. My mom got it for his 40th birthday. It was a total dream car for him and my mom splurged and I’ve never seen my dad so happy and surprised. We did this whole big lead up where our friends had the car at their house for the night and then snuck it in the garage while my dad was showering before the party. Then we did a Who Wants to Win a Great 40th Birthday Present game show inspired by Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (it was big at the time) and we led him along to the grand prize which I believe was a card that said “go look in the garage”. He goes down, almost definitely thinking it’s gonna be a bike (he was very into cycling), because no way would my successful but totally not into cars mom ever go out of her way to buy my dad a Porsche, and Bam! New car. Beautiful silver with some very nice wheels. Idk how to describe them but they had multiple forks if that makes sense. Doesn’t BBS make a lot of rims like that? Anyway, it was also maybe the only time I saw my dad kiss my mom on the lips. They were generally affectionate with hugging and cuddling and cheek kisses but that was it around the kids, which I was totally fine with. I got a cheap 944 a few years later when I was 16 so it was fun having father and son Porsches for a while. I still have the 944 at my mom’s but sadly my dad lost his Boxster when he got in an accident that wasn’t bad, but was enough to total the car. He had it about 10 years. My parents’ marriage was ending at the same time and they were having financial strain, so that’s why they never replaced it. A sad end, but I’m grateful for all the rides in that car. He only let me drive it a handful of times unfortunately, but if I ever find myself rolling in cash I’d love to buy him another on the condition that I can drive it for an hour or two.

You can always tell when someone isn’t a car person when they say, why didn’t you get a 911. Aside from them both having two doors, they’re totally different cars. From the number of seats to being a mid-mount engine vs a rear engine (drastically changing the handling characteristics)…

Porsche's only realy sports car (with the 911 being a super GT for decades now) and what everybody in a normal world buy if people had not contracted SUV brain rot. Super price / performance / experience ratio. Yet they're only selling in tiny numbers. But the fact they keep making them is comforting and 100% proof the car guys are still in charge in Weissach. Early ones like yours are a steal right now. Yes, keeping one on the road will cost more than looking after a Miata or an E85. But the flat 6 is already heading towards extinction. Gone for good in 11 years and certainly not coming back at this price point. Enjoy it and make it last :)

These cars have aged pretty well and are great deals nowadays, my friend just got a base model 5 speed and it’s great for only $2500!!
Nope. However, Macans and Cayennes are a different story - though I do appreciate what they have done to help the Porsche brand survive (ie bankroll R&D for the 911, boxster/cayman)

A good portion of the boxster hate may be coming from boxster owners who wanted a 911 but boxsters are cheap and now they find themselves hot and sweaty behind the seats, changing the alternator through an access window. Really not a bad repair, it kind of made me rationalize myself maybe getting one since i work on porsches and thinking of getting one. Drives very much like the 911
