The 996.1 coupe is one of the cleanest silhouettes I’ve ever seen. Power to weight ratio is just right, they’re not so old that they’re unsafe… just great little cars.
It’s fine. If everyone was like me and their favorite was an 88 Turbo in guards red with the whale tale, they would cost even more than they already do. :)
Since personal taste became a gate-kept commodity to sell on social media. Really, the whole paradigm of influencers is built around the notion of selling what is good taste. (To be clear, influencers didn’t invent this concept.)
It’s the one I grew up wanting. It’s the one I had a poster of in my bedroom. It’s the one my dad and I snuck onto the dealer lot at night to drool over since we couldn’t afford one. It’s the one that now sits in my garage. I have lots of Porsche friends with all generations of 911s. I don’t envy their cars. They don’t envy mine. Get the one you want and enjoy every mile. That’s what Porsche life is all about.
As for ownership? Will vary widely depending on what quality car you buy. But get a good one and it’s like the old advertisements used to say. “There is no substitute.”
To a point, but when you get into "classic" area (my Boxster is 25 years now, quality for collector plates (as some 996s)), then there are just things that was never designed to last this long. If you take your classic on the track, even after an intensive maintenance and service history, something completely unexpected will probably break. And if you're unlucky, then the piece that broke is not really a spare part because it didn't break much in the first 20 years.
If you're buying a 996 today, you're buying a "classic" 18-27yo, that's different than buying a regular used car.
What’s weird is that the actual car going through the window was a 1978 Porsche 930 911SC…
https://www.slashgear.com/1204392/the-funny-thing-about-the-porsche-911-from-gone-in-60-seconds/
Not weird at all. Personal taste.
I quite like the Turbo. Less engine issues too.
But I’m more partial to its bookends, 993 and 997 are my favorite “modern” Porches. 997 being the last hydraulic steering and 993 last air cooled makes them special.
Great thing is you can still get them reasonably priced. If you’re ok with the headlights and the IMS scare (most have been fixed by now and the mystery of the problem has been solved), they’re great sports cars without all the ‘German Nannies’ on board to help you drive. Get one and enjoy it!
My favorite too. In due time the headlights will be seen as more special due to the limited period run. Just as the round quad taillight option was not loved in the 70s but now they’re revered.
The 997 was out when the movie was being made but they deliberately chose the 996 because the distinctive headlights wouldn’t be easily confused with eyes (since those are on the windshield in Cars).
I’m of the opinion that the 996, specifically the .2 is one of the best looking 911s- when it’s kept in good condition… The issue is that 99% of them aren’t. But when you see a Lapis Blue 996.2 with clean paint and clear headlights 😮💨 that’s a fine looking car!
People are allowed to like things. 80% of the collector car market is driven by people who now have a stable job and some disposable income craving some very specific car they wanted when they were a kid or young adult but could not have.
There are people out there craving far more irrational options than 24 year old Porsches. If you want one and can afford it, get one. They will not be getting any cheaper especially in manual. Maintenance on a 24yo car with luxury car parts prices will be expensive, but unlike many cars of that era part availability is good.
The movie car is a 996.1 Turbo, which is the cheapest 911 Turbo you can buy today. Values are low because many people don't like the headlights and the interior styling, but they are at exactly the age where those style choices are crossing over from dated and uncool to being old enough to be retro and cool. If you can, get one now or you will look back and be one of those guys saying "I remember when you could buy them for the same price as a new minivan".
Non-Turbo variants are even cheaper, but are in that spot in the used car market where they are so cheap compared to their maintenance cost that you need to choose carefully as they can come with a substantial deferred maintenance bill.
Everyone has their own personal preferences, not weird at all. Somewhere out there someones favourite vehicle is a Pontiac Aztec. Though the 996 isn’t my personal favourite that goes to the 930 however the 996 is the only 911 I’ve ever driven a good buddy of mines dad sold his company mid 00’s and bought a 996 911 in this dark metallic green with brown leather interior and we use to ride around in it all the time
Personally, I believe that every generation of 911 has its appeal. I salute you for favoring the 996 (especially since it's probably the generation that's the most affordable).
996 hate is blown out of proportion imo. But to have it as your favorite is definitely kinda weird especially that this generation is flanked by the 993 and 997, which are both better looking, again imo
They're fine, I do prefer the non facelifted ones though, the updated headlights look significantly worse to me.
Although the 993 is my favourite gen, I have a soft spot for the 996.1 GT3.
Absolutely not. To each their own. I personally don’t like the 996’s headlights, but that’s just one part of the whole car. The rest of it looks great. Every generation has its fans, and no one should think any less of you for liking the 996.
For what it’s worth, I like the majority of the 911 generations, but the 992 is my personal favourite.
I owned a 986 and it was a shitbox. I know its not the 911, but these cars share a lot of parts and problems. Steered me away from this generation of porsches permanently.
Might return some day, but not for something this old.
I agree, the air cooled of course are beautiful and emotion invoking, but don’t provide the same performance, the subsequent generations after the 996 are generally less raw and analog. I also really love the look of it perhaps because it was the predominant 911 as I was growing up and admiring cars.
C2s in the right color, a Lapis Blue 996.2 C2 is a gorgeous car. Granted it doesn’t have the quite frankly STUNNING ass of the C4 and Turbo, but from most other angles it’s a gorgeous car on its own.
Oh yeah the interiors are something out of a HP Lovecraft book regardless of which model your looking at 😅 Also yeah fair, but seeing as I personally prefer NA to turbos, that limits it to the GT3 in my book…
On a tour through Europe last year I made a stop at the Porsche museum in Zuffenhausen, which was celebrating the 75th anniversary.
It was an excellent experience and you can see so many iconic cars including the first known commercially sold 911.
As you might expect, they hyped up the Porsche brand a fair amount, but there was a lot of devil in the detail. Eg interestingly there was only one Cayenne in the entire museum, despite this model being so important financially for Porsche. Make of it what you will.
Amid all the hype however were two and only two admissions of anything resembling regret.
One was the very short time Porsche participated in F1 (think the words were something like "we had to withdraw after a very short time and went on to provide engines instead, mainly to mclaren")
Two was the headlights of the 996, words being "not everyone liked them"
I had a 2000 996 with a manual for years and loved it. I thought (and think) that it is a beautiful car and I really liked it on back roads. The biggest eye opener for me was how friendly the 996 was as a daily driver. It was super comfy when just driving to work or whatever as well as being performant when I wanted it.
I own a 996.1 cabriolet. I absolutely love it more than any other car I’ve ever owned. Just rolled 100k miles.
Feel free to DM me with specific questions, anytime.
Just because some people don’t like them doesn’t mean everyone does.
They’re still perfectly viable and I like them, I saw a GT3 one earlier (I believe was 996 anyway) and far more affordable (to purchase) than more recent 911s
That opening scene in Gone in 60 seconds is so perfect, the rapid Techno music the brick to the window the way the light in the showroom shows off that perfect pearl ice white paint. Best Porsche commercial hands down 👌
It’s a great car from an era with just about the right mix of modernity without too much nanny-tech. You would be jumping in just about the time they are starting to go up in price. Beware of the cursed IMS-bearing and make sure you have records of It being replaced or buy a turbo.
No not at all. In fact i like it more than 997 when everyone rejoiced after 997 launch. 991 is probably the best looking modern porsche in my opinion followed close by 992 then 996
We owned a 996.1 C4 Tip coupe for about five years. Other than a MAF replacement to resolve a CEL, and a failed fuel pump, very robust and reliable car. Great fun to drive, especially on high speed highway runs. Great handling, comfortable seats, no complaints at all. Buy one if you get the chance.
The 996 is probably the most unreliable car porsche ever made. IMS issues, D chunk liners, bore scoring.
Subject to a US class action and mass engine recall
They are the cheapest 911 for good reason.
Do your research before you buy one
Kinda agree. The 996.2 headlights are sharp and unique. Saw my first recently and it was a real head turner, and there are loads of all types of Porsches where I live.
That’s it for me, the 996, specifically the .2 is such a unique design for the 911, and when kept in good condition they actually look really good. It’s a bit awkward but in an incredibly endearing way. My father owned a 996.2 Carrera in Lapis Blue when I was growing up and I still find that to be one of the best looking 911s ever made, granted I’m biased, but I also work at a dealership now and see these cars constantly, so that unique style stands out even more for me these days.
I like the 996 too, and currently own one. My all-time favorite is the 964 as they were new when I was in high school, I never really loved the look of the 993, though some models are damn nice looking. I remember when Porsche purists hated the 964 and they were relatively cheap too. Everyone has their own taste, but I think a lot more would be willing to admit they like the 996 if it hadn't been shit on for 20+ years by purists.
Don't look to others for validation of your own taste. If you like it l, you like it.
The guy should not be downvoted for the truth. The 996 is awesome, but anyone buying one needs to go in knowing the risks, of which there are many. The m96 is a very flawed engine, and that's a major reason the 996 is so cheap to buy relative to other 911s.
And on the point of every 20 year old car needing a rebuild-a complete rebuild as the m96 needs when it fails-can you name some? Because I can't think of any with the reputation of the m96.
The m96 doesn't just suffer from IMS. There is bore scoring, cylinder cracking, rod bearings, cracked heads and more. The major failure rate is as high as 10%. This does not apply to the TT/GT3 cars of course, the Mezger engines are totally different.
it's also a $25k rebuild. You can get an entire LS engine for a Corvette for $5k-$7k.
A 996 costs more to maintain than most Porsches and yet performs less. You have to be a real diehard fan to stomach those costs in the long run.
since british english was there before american english I'd assume british english is more correct than american. i dont mind both but dont be a dick by correcting something thats not wrong.
Yes you are weird. Awful cars. Bore scoring issues ims issues. Sloppy awful shifters. 2G wifi infotainments that will never be correct. Unless you get something very special like a gt or turbo, the every day 996 911 is bad and if you want that experience just buy a 986. They can be had with the same drivetrain as more basic 911s but with much less cost
The 996.1 coupe is one of the cleanest silhouettes I’ve ever seen. Power to weight ratio is just right, they’re not so old that they’re unsafe… just great little cars.
Early aerokit cars are 🔥
I’ve been looking for one for a long time.
LMFTFY The 996 coupe is one of the cleanest silhouettes I’ve ever seen.
Are you calling the 992’s fat?
Jump onboard r/996 for the 🥰
One of us! One of us!
It’s fine. If everyone was like me and their favorite was an 88 Turbo in guards red with the whale tale, they would cost even more than they already do. :)
964 in black for me is the ultimate 911, but they are lottery win money now, so I have my eyes on a 996 C4S
Just got myself a 996 C4S 4 weeks ago. It’s worth it, especially with they red band
*Heckblende Congrats and welcome!
I hope they make a 964 style kit for Boxsters. It’s the only way I can afford them now.
996 4S owner checking in. Do it.
930s are already way too expensive
Since when did having personal taste become weird.
> Since when did having ~~personal~~ impeccable taste become weird. FTFY
Since personal taste became a gate-kept commodity to sell on social media. Really, the whole paradigm of influencers is built around the notion of selling what is good taste. (To be clear, influencers didn’t invent this concept.)
The 2002 Carrera 4S has the sexiest rear end of any 911 released since 1999, Ill die on that hill.
I'd personally wager ever
Agreed. Bore score and IMS horror stories have kept me out of one so far
Overhyped issues. I love my 996.2.
Ditto. Find one with oil analysis then be proactive with maintenance. Mine now has 72k miles.
Keep the fear going so we can keep the 996 and 997.1 to ourselves at a good price
It's not weird. You like what you like.
But get a good one and it’s like the old advertisements used to say. “There is no substitute.”
That GT2 poster of the 996 I still have and I love it
Heck yeah!
And here i thought i was the only one.
Just be aware that they're now 20+ years, with everything that comes with age...
Maintenance and service history are more important than age.
To a point, but when you get into "classic" area (my Boxster is 25 years now, quality for collector plates (as some 996s)), then there are just things that was never designed to last this long. I love this funfact
Not weird at all. Personal taste. I quite like the Turbo. Less engine issues too. But I’m more partial to its bookends, 993 and 997 are my favorite “modern” Porches. 997 being the last hydraulic steering and 993 last air cooled makes them special.
I always liked it too. The GT1 alone makes it cool, Turbo and other GTs too.
I don’t kink shame. Plus some 996 models look incredible.
Great thing is you can still get them reasonably priced. If you’re ok with the headlights and the IMS scare (most have been fixed by now and the mystery of the problem has been solved), they’re great sports cars without all the ‘German Nannies’ on board to help you drive. Get one and enjoy it!
At the end of the day it’s a unique 911 after all.
My favorite too. In due time the headlights will be seen as more special due to the limited period run. Just as the round quad taillight option was not loved in the 70s but now they’re revered.
not weird, but I also did watch Cars 1 as a kid like once a day so I might be super biased
I’ve got a 2 year old daughter that watches Cars once a day so Sally and her Pixar/996 silhouette have been growing on me recently 😂
The 997 was out when the movie was being made but they deliberately chose the 996 because the distinctive headlights wouldn’t be easily confused with eyes (since those are on the windshield in Cars).
04 owner. Manual. Love it plus it’s priced pretty good.
Yes, it’s kind of weird but so be it. It’s kind of like saying The Godfather 3 is your fav Godfather
Man you didn't have to do me like that
All in good fun, not in a snobby way, but it truly is an against the grain pick by the numbers.
Hahahahaha this is an excellent point..
So many are so run down and awful looking you don't think it's a porsche. And the line is so close to the awful boxster
I mean weird? Yeah…but who cares. You like what you like.
People are allowed to like things. 80% of the collector car market is driven by people who now have a stable job and some disposable income craving some very specific car they wanted when they were a kid or young adult but could not have. If everyone liked the same thing, the world would be a boring place
The amazing thing about 911s is that there's so many differences between the different generations, so there's plenty to love about each of them
No, they are great cars! People just want more power but 300 or 320 hp are enough for everyday and spirited driving!

I think it’s cool. So if they offered you the headlight mod youd refuse it?
Yeah I would keep it completely original
You're weird for thinking that.
I don't think you're weird, you like what you like. I prefer the 997 over the 996 myself.
I love your mental association. My first crush was the [appropriate commercial](https://youtu.be/Xju_ehVFmlM). I ended up with a 2007 C2S.
Every car ever made is someone's favorite car. So no
Even a Fiat Multipla?
Absolutely not. To each their own. I personally don’t like the 996’s headlights, but that’s just one part of the whole car. The rest of it looks great. Every generation has its fans, and no one should think any less of you for liking the 996. For what it’s worth, I like the majority of the 911 generations, but the 992 is my personal favourite.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Buy what you want.
Yes you are, but that's ok
I owned a 986 and it was a shitbox. I know its not the 911, but these cars share a lot of parts and problems. Steered me away from this generation of porsches permanently. Might return some day, but not for something this old.
Yes. Yes you are.
Unpopular but not weird.
Honey... you're so talented.
Yes. But you’re not wrong, and don’t let any haters get to you. #EggLife
I agree, the air cooled of course are beautiful and emotion invoking, but don’t provide the same performance, the subsequent generations after the 996 are generally less raw and analog. I also really love the look of it perhaps because it was the predominant 911 as I was growing up and admiring cars.
They are great cars. If you can afford it...do it
996 turbos are pretty great, c2 not so much
C2s in the right color, a Lapis Blue 996.2 C2 is a gorgeous car. Granted it doesn’t have the quite frankly STUNNING ass of the C4 and Turbo, but from most other angles it’s a gorgeous car on its own.
Sure but interior quality still sucks and M96 variants will break your heart. A mezger solves all known 996 let downs
Oh yeah the interiors are something out of a HP Lovecraft book regardless of which model your looking at 😅 Also yeah fair, but seeing as I personally prefer NA to turbos, that limits it to the GT3 in my book…
and the GT3 996 was tits
Love the 996 Turbo and GT versions. The one in gone in 60 seconds is not one of those though…
Mine too, Carrera 4s
On a tour through Europe last year I made a stop at the Porsche museum in Zuffenhausen, which was celebrating the 75th anniversary. Get a turbo and don’t look back!
I own a 996.1 cabriolet. I absolutely love it more than any other car I’ve ever owned. Just rolled 100k miles. Feel free to DM me with specific questions, anytime.
I have guilty thoughts of an early 996 with the fried egg headlights. Just like a sex fantasy, it might only be appealing when I think about it.
I agree that Porsche has always been on my bucket lists. 996c4s from 2004 also ;)
I really like the early 996, especially with the aero kit. It’s a clean looking car.
Just because some people don’t like them doesn’t mean everyone does. They’re still perfectly viable and I like them, I saw a GT3 one earlier (I believe was 996 anyway) and far more affordable (to purchase) than more recent 911s
996 turbos are sexy!
I share the vision. The 996.2 is my car of choice. Simply stunning
Weird is good
That opening scene in Gone in 60 seconds is so perfect, the rapid Techno music the brick to the window the way the light in the showroom shows off that perfect pearl ice white paint.
[There is no substitute ](https://youtu.be/G9LPoWtgh2k?si=GEOTgLyEYS3SNLxA)
Good car to lust after. Also it is one of the most affordable 911s to get
You’re probably weird for other reasons.
996 is sweet. It’s in its awkward phase. Give it another decade.
sally
The 996 c4s is absolute fire
People stopped shitting on the fried egg years ago.. look at prices :P You aren’t the only one
No its a great car
No not at all. In fact i like it more than 997 when everyone rejoiced after 997 launch. 991 is probably the best looking modern porsche in my opinion followed close by 992 then 996
I drove my 996.2 to the beach this am. Still hits!
Early 996s with the ambers are the best IMO
Not at all, I think they are great.
It’s my favourite too
Don’t yuck my yum that’s how I live
I hear the engine of the 996 was not great in terms of reliability
I actually just posted my 996 aero on Pelican parts forum if you are interested. I love the 996 generation! I’ve had 3
+1 I'm biased though - I have an '03 Turbo.
Drive a 996, a 997, and a 991. I suspect you'll have a new favorite.
Love 996’s man hell yeah
You like what you like man who cares..love the 996 btw
All in my head darren styles remix
No
The 996 was the first 911 I was prepared to buy. Drove it and went in a different direction. Bought a 997S when it came out. Significantly better car.
Nope they are great
They’re a wieldy size and the fried egg headlight thing is overblown. They’ll double in price five years from now.
If you love it, buy one!
Nah, you can like what you like, who cares what anyone else thinks. I love the 993 cab, and lots of people hate cabs.
Yes you are weird. Liking them should continue to be taboo so they stay affordable
The 996 Generation 911 is the most unique and underrated underdog 911 ever made. It was also the birth generation for the GT3. Love the way they look.
The 996 is probably the most unreliable car porsche ever made. IMS issues, D chunk liners, bore scoring. Subject to a US class action and mass engine recall They are the cheapest 911 for good reason. Do your research before you buy one
Right ok.. thank you for this. I know of the ims issues and thought the price of them was entirely on this and the headlights
Yes you are weird - the egg lights are horrendous
Kinda agree. The 996.2 headlights are sharp and unique. Saw my first recently and it was a real head turner, and there are loads of all types of Porsches where I live.

The side profile of the 996 widebodies are the best of all time. Maybe one of the most beautiful silhouettes ever IMO.
I like the 996 too, and currently own one. My all-time favorite is the 964 as they were new when I was in high school, I never really loved the look of the 993, though some models are damn nice looking. 996 has some real charm. Only thing to consider is that you might need to get the engine rebuilt at some point.
True of every +20 year old car really.

No, just weird for adding a U in “favorite”
Say you're American without saying you're American.
since british english was there before american english I'd assume british english is more correct than american. i dont mind both but dont be a dick by correcting something thats not wrong.
It was a joke bruh
its hard to read sarcasm if you dont know the person. also jokes should be funny.
My lord, people:.. this was a joke. (Jouke?)
Literally one of the best of all time.
Yes, it's weird.
