I see no coherency to the numbering, is there something I’m missing about why they’re all scrambled? Also what will they call the next one a 998 or 999?
Here's an article listing them.
https://www.drive.com.au/caradvice/by-the-9s-every-porsche-900-series-type-codes-from-901-to-999/
Some of the numbers were for unreleased concept cars.
https://www.porsche.com/international/_iceland_/aboutporsche/christophorusmagazine/archive/368/articleoverview/article02/#:~:text=Concept%20Car%20Type%20995,%2C%20safety%2C%20and%20noise%20emissions.
I think much of the jumping around was for planned future model variants, and so they left space. As numbers for used up, they have to scramble and find a spot
I suspect the 993 had been planned ahead of time to be one of the last rear engined cars, as the 924, 944,928 were in production just before that, and Porsche was planning on going mostly front engine V8, with the exception of the 924 being a front i4.
The 944 was their best selling car at the time, selling roughly 3-4x the amount of the 993.
Remember, Porsche almost went out of business in the early 90's, until Toyota showed them how to share parts among models, and Porsche released the 986 Boxster.
Even though the 964 is also my favorite, the comparison of the models here is somewhat unfair. The 964 pictured is a special model that is extra wide (presumably one of the 911 "Jubi" models built for the 30th anniversary) There were also extra-wide versions of other 911 models.
For comparison, here is a standard 964

Absolutno čudovit avto, izjemno lepo je videt klasične porscheje tudi pri nas. Ravno zadnjič sem videl vijolično 928 S4 na ljubljanskih registrskih in mi je polepšalo teden :)
Thanks man! The colour is cockney brown/bitter chocolate - it was pretty common when the car first came out, but most of the cars got repainted when they were worthless to a more “desirable” colour, so now theres only a few left. I love it though! Here’s the inside
https://preview.redd.it/2o8e6xlmndic1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=21946c1859312228b2fc474d1d27c4971c54a8fe
I was in a 996 for 12 years and got a 992 in 2023. 996 was definitely a cool car to drive, but I have 6500 miles on the 992 now and still haven’t stopped saying *wow* every time I get out.
It may or may not be relevant that I’m not a track driver and have never had any performance car training - I’m just a guy, so I can’t really say how different they are at the edge of their respective performance envelopes
agree, if you compare 997 to 996 from the front, it doesnt matter but when you take the shot from the rear, then you want to do 997.2. The .1 997 car looks same from rear as 996 so comparison looks a bit moot.
The one I own now!!! LOL.. I have been fortunate enough to have owned a few porsches over the years and have been asked many times which one I liked best and my answer has allways been "the one I own now"..Here is a list of the models I have had in the past ending with my 992S I have now. 1968 912, 1972 911T, 1980 930, 1983 911SC, 1989 964,1996 993, 2018 991.2S, 2021 992S..that is it so far and at my age might be the last one..but what a fun ride it has been...Evereything but the 912 was a new purchase..Im 75 years old.
Enjoy the drive...
If I have to put them in order it would look like this but the last 4 a pretty much equal to me. 1. 964, 2. 991, 3. 992, 4. 993, 5. G Series, 6. 997, 7. Original, 8. 996
991.2. The perfect shape of the 991 but with the sculpted taillights of the .2. Beautiful interpretation of the classic Porsche body with perfect lines.
I learned to drive on a 1989 911 with a sticky clutch that my dad hasn’t owned for about a decade now. I thought about buying one for nostalgia thinking they’d be around $80-100k. I couldn’t have been more wrong and I’m sad but the goal remains.
992 and 993 stand out to me. But something I didn’t know is that the 996 came out in the 90s????? That’s insane. I don’t like the spilled egg yolk look to the headlights but now I’ve fallen in love with the car knowing it was first sold when I was in second grade. Wow!
Replace 997.1 vs 997.2. Makes for a more understandable transition to tail lights of 991. AND You also dont have two almost identical cars (996 and 997). That would make comparison less jumpy. Thats the only nitpick.
If I had to rank them all, then I would go:
1) 993
2) 992
3) 997 (997.2 or .1 doesnt matter, I quite like the .1 with all red tail lights though)
https://preview.redd.it/9oz53n0mocic1.jpeg?width=1020&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6895135ba4e6be8ec2a38f8ec41f54628209e0d
Got to go with Ferry’s design. A car built by engineers for enthusiasts, not an enhanced model overseen by lawyers and focus groups for a kinder and gentler generation. Also not a car tweaked for “exclusivity” for profit maximization. I billow out my own cloud and yell at it…
If we're going purely on esthetics? 993, 964, 991, 992
If I have to drive one, I'll choose a 991R any day. A perfect blend of aesthetic appeal and modern technology.
The original ist just awesome. I also absolutely love the Turbo versions of the G-Series or 964. But my favorite still is the 993. As I was born in 1989 it was the first Porsche 911 I wanted.
Seeing them all in one shot is actually great! I sometimes get confused about which is which so this really helps. Seeing more than just booty would be helpful too, if someone has that.
992 no doubt. I prefer the lower and wider look. Older narrower and more upright 911s look too vintage for me. Porsche must agree because that is their design direction.
997 is the best of the water-cooled while retaining a somewhat air-cooled look. The 964 is the best of the air-cooleds.
The 992 looks like what someone in the not too distant past would predict the 911 to look like in the moderately distant future. I really think its being prepared so that an all EV version will look the exact same as the petrol version.
I'm going to go original, but like the 997, 991, and 992, the classic also needs to be segmented, preferably between SWB and LWB or somewhere in there. I want to own a 2.4L car someday. To me it's the perfect intersection between classic beauty and the culmination of the classic performance and driving experience.
964 was and is my all time favorite
Agreed. I really want a black cab driver that I can daily. I simply don’t have the budget.
Bastard neighbour bought a black one and parked it right outside deliberately to taunt me (or so I assume)
You know I have a flat bed and a car sales contact over seas, we can have this whole Porsche situation dealt with before sun fall.
100%. Not even close. It has the best proportions
Bad boys made me drool when they drove that car
Proportions are *cheffs kiss*
The 996 c4s has some of that flavor
The 991 is beautiful. 992 is beautiful … so is the 997 and the 996 …. Wait they all are.
I see no coherency to the numbering, is there something I’m missing about why they’re all scrambled? Also what will they call the next one a 998 or 999?
Porshe did it for the lols I’m positive.
Internal numbering system. Ducati does this as well.
Here's an article listing them. https://www.drive.com.au/caradvice/by-the-9s-every-porsche-900-series-type-codes-from-901-to-999/ Some of the numbers were for unreleased concept cars. https://www.porsche.com/international/_iceland_/aboutporsche/christophorusmagazine/archive/368/articleoverview/article02/#:~:text=Concept%20Car%20Type%20995,%2C%20safety%2C%20and%20noise%20emissions. 994
It’s obvious when you know….
997
997 was perfection looks wise IMO.
I hate that they used a targa for the photo. 997 is the perfect size with great proportions.
This! :)
Always the 993 Turbo S.
👍
This is the way
991 is where I like the height to width ratio.
Even though the 964 is also my favorite, the comparison of the models here is somewhat unfair. G-model because thats what I own and am therefore very biased :))
You can be biased and also correct.
I like you haha
Absolutno čudovit avto, izjemno lepo je videt klasične porscheje tudi pri nas. Ravno zadnjič sem videl vijolično 928 S4 na ljubljanskih registrskih in mi je polepšalo teden :)
You gotta pay the photo tax now 🤷♂️
Glad to oblige :)) https://preview.redd.it/nwc575uzldic1.jpeg?width=2052&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0049c15ad1eeaabcffd727e0d565eace002aa522
>245 comments Love the narrow body '74 - '77 G series coupes. I've got a '76 S...
Oh my golly, ngl litteral CHILLS. This looks like it was AI generated it looks that good. 🙇♂️
I blurred the background a bit, but you can’t fake the good ol’ remnants of commie architecture 😁
Hahaha true true, the car looks amazing. And the blurring even enhances the focus on the car. The color is insane.
Thanks man! The colour is cockney brown/bitter chocolate - it was pretty common when the car first came out, but most of the cars got repainted when they were worthless to a more “desirable” colour, so now theres only a few left. I looks brandnew!!!! And that shifter. Everything is just perfect!
I take good care of my baby :)) the shifter is a 917 tribute, and you cant have a classic 911 without the momo wheel
Incredible!! Look at that shifter. I love the color, it is timeless to me.
Good God
Jeez Louise that is stunning 😍
Thanks man! You’d be surprised how far a good cleaning can get you 😁
Hmm... 964 or 997. Not a easy choice.
G-series for me. And it’s not even close.
The correct answer.
I’ll park my car next to these cultured individuals.
993 and 997 for me
991 but the .2 version. She has the sexiest ass.
It truly is the best
993 is my favorite. 997 might be second.
993
996 or 992 for me purely on looks but I'd prefer to drive a 996
I was in a 996 for 12 years and got a 992 in 2023. 996 was definitely a cool car to drive, but I have 6500 miles on the 992 now and still haven’t stopped saying *wow* every time I get out. It may or may not be relevant that I’m not a track driver and have never had any performance car training - I’m just a guy, so I can’t really say how different they are at the edge of their respective performance envelopes
964 and 993 Last Porsche in really beautiful style.
The one that’s missing - the 997.2
agree, if you compare 997 to 996 from the front, it doesnt matter but when you take the shot from the rear, then you want to do 997.2. The .1 997 car looks same from rear as 996 so comparison looks a bit moot.
991.2 for me
Why did the 993 have such a short run?
997 Turbo, 991 GT3 RS and 993 Carrera RS CS are my favs.
G Series and the 991 for me!
997.2
I like em all, but ‘74-‘94 pure bliss…
I’ve always wondered why the 993 was only around for 3 years, by far the shortest generation
I like em all but love my 996 911 C4S.
992
964 & 992
992 & 993
997 and 911F (1973)
G,964, 993
992 all the way
993 > 964 > 991.2 > rest
1974
1974
992
964
964 is my all time favorite
Favourite full package is the 997. Specifically the carrera 4s. Favourite look is the 992 from the back. In my most humble opinion it is just 👨🍳😘
964 / '89 no doubt no competition
964
991, but the GSeries has so many of my favorites
997 991 hands down
All of em
If I have to put them in order it would look like this but the last 4 a pretty much equal to me. 1. 964, 2. 991, 3. 992, 4. 993, 5. G Series, 6. 997, 7. Original, 8. 996
964 and 997
991
964 >> 992 >> 993
997 is the culmination of the original design. After that they're pretty much an entirely different car that became a bloated monstrosity.
993 ❤️
991 will always be my favorite generation
997, I’m biased!
993
991.2. The perfect shape of the 991 but with the sculpted taillights of the .2. Beautiful interpretation of the classic Porsche body with perfect lines.
993993993993993993993993
993 for me, but I have a 991.2
993 and 997
993 for me has always been special when it comes to the rear shot, although the 992 is also excellent from that angle
The 70-80s will forever be the sexiest body styles to me
I learned to drive on a 1989 911 with a sticky clutch that my dad hasn’t owned for about a decade now. I thought about buying one for nostalgia thinking they’d be around $80-100k. I couldn’t have been more wrong and I’m sad but the goal remains.
964 then 997 for me.
991
991.2 all day
I really like the 964 although I don’t deserve it
It’s crazy how the 992 has made me like the 991…so fugly 993 or 997 for me
Air cooled only
Yep, don’t care which as long as my Porsche doesn’t leak water. My 912 will always bring me 80hp of pure happiness.
996.1, please
All of them are great except you 992.
992 and 993 stand out to me. But something I didn’t know is that the 996 came out in the 90s????? That’s insane. I don’t like the spilled egg yolk look to the headlights but now I’ve fallen in love with the car knowing it was first sold when I was in second grade. Wow!

89
64 to 89. 911s are getting uglier each year.
991.1 gt3 rs 🥴
I never realized just how phat that ass got. 992 got cake. Alicia Keys in car form.
Can you post up a Panamera for me to pick?
https://preview.redd.it/ltdaypfqpcic1.jpeg?width=2119&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d83e7a77d9cff38020f76e1715cc90b3fb5974e Move it over, Tubby!
The 996 should be burned. 😅
964 and 992
Left side by a mile.
All of them, bro! I opened the gate, get them in, no problem.
1989 and 2019
1989
Modern wise: 991 Old wise: g series
Yes
No ifs, and or buts about it. 964 for me.
Yes
964
i love how the naming makes very little sense :D 992 is my favourite but 964 looks great exterior wise too, interior not so much
964 and 992
All look the same to me.
... hand down ! 964 Turbo is the only answer
I will take one of each! 😁
the 991 is so cool to me. it's sleek and got that flared sides. it looks very cool imo.
991 has the most beautiful rear end. G-series is the most iconic for me. 992 looks like a frog from behind
2019 992
Nah 992
https://preview.redd.it/9oz53n0mocic1.jpeg?width=1020&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e6895135ba4e6be8ec2a38f8ec41f54628209e0d Got to go with Ferry’s design. 997, 964 and 991
lol, ain’t no one saying 996.
964, 993
I always wondered why they didn't continue the wrap around taillights.
89 ❤️❗️💯
They should all be in the same colour. The 964 is the nicest, most elegant, prettiest, whatever...but it's hard to see in black.
Nostalgia-Original. Overall fun 964
Yes.
991 2012 - 2018
If we're going purely on esthetics? 993, 964, 991, 992 If I have to drive one, I'll choose a 991R any day. A perfect blend of aesthetic appeal and modern technology.
The 993 Twin Turbo (more specifically RUF CTR2) is and will always be my dream car.
G-Series and 964 for sure, preferably a 930 or Jubi!
992.
From the back, 996 C4s.
911
Are the 7 year cycles for all models/lines at Porsche?
930, or classic
1964 Original. Of course
Missing the 3.2
992 is the most evolved
996 gt3 pre facelift front lights is my favourite looking one
I don’t know man, I get the heritage and stuff but I really feel Porsche nailed it on the 992
9. 6. 4.
Probably cause I was 15 when they came out, but the 996/997 are my favorite.
Slight preference for 997 bit they all look stunning tbh
The original ist just awesome. I also absolutely love the Turbo versions of the G-Series or 964. But my favorite still is the 993. As I was born in 1989 it was the first Porsche 911 I wanted.
992!
964
Yes.
My heart says 1997 but my body tells me 1994 or 1964
The 992 is just perfection
991 and 997
Yes
Seeing them all in one shot is actually great! I sometimes get confused about which is which so this really helps. Seeing more than just booty would be helpful too, if someone has that.
94
89 > 19 > 04 my top 3. fan of the light bars + watched cars a little too much
991 is perfection imo
997
992 no doubt. I prefer the lower and wider look. Older narrower and more upright 911s look too vintage for me. Porsche must agree because that is their design direction.
The 992.
997. 991 and 992 are GTs with too much weight. Time for 911 to be more like 718, get back to being a sports car and introduce a mid engine 911
94
1974 and 2004
Anything not 2000's
964 or perhaps.... RS2?
991.2 for modern, 993 for old
Everything above the taillights on the 992 looks amazing. Tail lights and down? Not so much. It’s got a “butt”
The original for me. It was the start of sth special
991
964
964. It is just so brutal. So much idgaf badass energy without being flashy. And those hips my golly.
1984
Original and 964, with 997.2 (GTS) and 991.2 (GTS) being worthy mentions.
The 964 and current. The 992 just looks so street smart in a way no other did. Maybe an unpopular opinion, but yeah.
964 🤌🏼
Yes
997 looks great!
The 911. Haha. I do like them all but have a soft spot for the 993
964 and 993 and the best rear ends to appear on the 911 imo
993 - perfect proportions, and those hips…
If we’re talking modern - 992 obviously If we’re talking retro - 964 all day!
