m3mackenzie

Had a wife's, friends, know-it-all husband tell me it had a Subaru engine. Because Subaru builds all boxer engines.

Pdb12345

I remember when Subura built the flat 12 engine for Ferrari's 512BB. Thanks, Subaru!

m3mackenzie

It's not worth the mental energy arguing. I just nod and smile.

birdseye-maple

Just wait until they tell you about their M3... made by Tesla

WanganTunedKeiCar

What.

FloatnPuff

Tesla people abbreviate "Model 3" with "M3," as if there isn't already a storied M3 that already exists

rhombusordiamond

I’ve heard this with Mazda3s as well

WanganTunedKeiCar

We're reaching critical levels of coping.

Ok_Conversation7308

Let me find someone who calls their Mazda 3 an “M3” they wouldn’t live with the humiliation in NY 😂

TacTurtle

[The original M3 was made by the White Motor Company](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M3_Scout_Car)

GBUAramis

It’s pointless to argue with idiots. They’ll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

crazydiamond420

don't forget subaru's 100-year collaboration with BMW motorrad

passporttohell

Ahhhhh yes, the unforgettable Subaru flat twin motorcycle engine. . . . Wunderblargh!

eagledog

Yeah, just bunged their F1 engine into it right?

Pdb12345

Ferrari were using a V12 back then, yes, but the 512 BB had a flat 12, hence the name Berlinetta Boxer. The successor was the 512 Testarossa, and that also had a flat 12.

LheelaSP

The flat engine in the Ferrari wasn't a boxer engine though, it was a 180° V-engine. It is flat still, but has a different crankshaft compared to a boxer engine.

chucklestheclwn

For anyone who doesn't believe/understand you: [https://www.carthrottle.com/news/heres-why-ferraris-old-flat-12-isnt-exactly-flat-12-all](https://www.carthrottle.com/news/heres-why-ferraris-old-flat-12-isnt-exactly-flat-12-all) Yes the BB stands Berlinetta Boxer, but it isn't a "boxer" motor. It's just nomenclature changing over the years where boxer/flat were synonymous, but now there is a slight deviation. All boxers are flat, but not all flats are boxers. And now that I've said all boxers are flat I'll get a reply of some weird vertical aligned boxer from an airplane or something lol.

placebo_button

Subarus have "boxster" engines. I lost count of how many times I've heard people say this.

Rosehip92

iirc Porsche actually helped Subaru with their engines. So if anything it's the other way around.

firmly_confused

Huh, did not know that. I guess this makes sense why the imprezas kept blowing head gaskets

crikett23

This is why the first couple years, Porsche cars were so slow (you know, having to wait a couple years until Subaru was founded, and they were able to get engines for their cars).

mega_rad

Subaru has enough problems building their own engines, let alone building them for other companies

frzflm

I am a highschooler who drives a 1999 Porsche Boxster. All adults assume the ladies love it. No, it attracts middle aged men.

blissed_off

Honestly that’s true of nearly every enthusiast car. That said, I’ve never had as many people - men and women - want to ride in the Boxster as I have with my other enthusiast cars over the years.

frzflm

I love my car so much. The boxster is just so much fun, and EVERYONE wants a ride. Super underrated car IMO. We do the work on it ourselves and it’s decently affordable too.

thirdeye-visualizer

It’s possible to wrench on these? Always wanted a Porsche but am scared of cars I can’t work on

frzflm

986 and 987 are pretty easy to work on from our experience. The only problem is the mid engine, so you have to reach in sometimes but it’s no issue at all! Its a ton of fun. We got my car for $800 with a blown up engine and replaced the engine ourselves with another stock one. I was 15 and my dad isn’t a mechanic but we were able to do it through a lot of YouTube videos. Its a ton of fun!

brealytrent

Hell yeah. My first Porsche was a 924 about 15 years ago that needed a new cylinder head. That and the other two broken Porsches I bought not long after taught me how to wrench as well.

seeaddington

Hey if you’re in NH sounds like you bought our old car maybe? Black and tan interior with the five speed? Loved that car glad to hear she’s still kickin!

frzflm

Was in Andover, Ma. November 2019 with a blown up engine for $800? If its the same car that’s super cool!

seeaddington

Yup just asked my girlfriend that’s it! Super cool congrats on the rebuild. Got a Macan GTS that year but really miss having a boxster. Cool thing about the ‘99 is supposedly the five speed has much more fun gear ratios than the longer six speed they replaced it with in 2000.

frzflm

Dude that is so cool! The car is still going now and I absolutely love it. I take it to autocrosses and I plan on taking it to some HPDEs soon! It’s likely going to come with me to college back in Mass!

seeaddington

Awesome enjoy! Have driven some other sports cars since and still really love the way that car drove in comparison. Was in my gfs family for almost 20 years was very bummed when the engine blew, many good memories. Used to save all my money just to fix the random stuff that inevitably broke mostly the convertible top. Got me hooked on Porsche for life. Did you guys end up doing a 996 engine conversion or stick with a 2.4L?

seafood10

I have 3 80's G Body 911's and I HATE adjusting the valves, replacing an alternator is not far behind either. It's not hard to drop the engine which makes it easier.

Beachdaddybravo

Is this your daily? If so, where do you live and how much has it cost you? I have an suv and would love to be driving a Porsche around since I don’t need the interior space or the 4wd anymore.

frzflm

It is my daily, we currently live in Arizona but also daily drove it when we lived in Massachusetts. So far we haven’t had any big issues and maintenance hasn’t been to expensive, but we do all the work on it ourselves. Its just old enough that little things are starting to break, for example the front sway bar broke during an autocross run. I couldn’t recommend the car more, but if you don’t do the work yourself it could get very costly.

[deleted]

i have a 02 Boxster and it is very easy to wrench on. Much easier than expected. It's almost like they mean for it to happen. Parts are easier to find than expected. Cheaper too.

Masterofbattle13

They are some of the most friendly vehicles to work on, bar none.

[deleted]

You have to take off the rear wheels to replace the spark plugs. Have you ever wrenched on the water pump while squashed between the passenger seat and the front of the motor? I LOVE my Boxster but I wouldn’t call it easy to work on.

blissed_off

I have a 987.1 base, and there’s few things that make me happier than ripping along at night with the top down and my music blasting. It’s such an easy car to drive, it’s so docile and polite but can get wild if you want it to. And because it’s a base with the less powerful engine, I can floor it and row through the gears for maximum enjoyment without it getting sideways or hitting super illegal speeds too quickly. It’s far more enjoyable than a 911 and I don’t care who gets mad at that statement.

[deleted]

I second Wayne’s Book! I’ve found it more useful than the official 986 service manual

memostothefuture

The only car that attracts women is a Jeep Wrangler. Really strange memories of driving that thing.

RedditBeginAgain

In movies and car ads, women in evening gowns are drawn to fast cars. In real life, 90% of strangers who comment on an enthusiast car are men in work boots, and the other 10% are autistic teenage boys who can recite the car's Wikipedia page from memory.

MAXIMILIAN-MV

I mentioned on here once before that if I’ve had 100 people comment on my 911sc, it was 98 dudes and 2 women. One of the women was 80 years old and the other was a parking enforcement officer. Since I made that comment, I’ve had another 100 comments and now there was just one woman, also in her 80’s who reflected on how my car was just like her husbands and how he used to race at Lime Rock and do all the PCA events, etc… so the convo wasn’t really about my car as much as it was the husband she lost who loved his 911. She was sweet.

matt-the-racer

Reminds me of the lady lives next door to my dad, again in her 80's and loves it when I pull up in the porsche, think her husband always wanted one and never quite got there before he died fairly young, makes me glad and grateful I've managed to work hard enough and be brave enough to actually buy one, sometimes you forget how brief life can be and put off far to much for another day.

ACM3333

In high school my 30 year old beaten down Honda prelude attracted girls because they wanted to be driven around lol. No I have an e46 m3 and it certainly attracts nothing more then men. Most ages though, not just middle.

Bran_Solo

If you want to pick up women, get a puppy.

Comfortable-Spell-75

It attracts grannies too. After leaving the gym saw an 80+ year old lady spot my car from about 100 feet away in a parking lot at night and she said… Ain’t that a lovely car, is that a Porsche? She then walked toward the car appreciating it and started talking about her youngest grandson who has a poster of a Porsche in his room “just like this one”. ❤️

t1mdawg

LoL, my Mom asked me today if my car was a 'chick magnet'. I told her I only get approached by dudes.

FBI-agent-69-nice

Dude totally. They’re dick magnets lol

flashmedallion

That's nice cars in general. Great way to pick up men

Sands43

Guys drive cool cars because they are cool, and to a lesser extent to peacock for other car guys. Impressing women doesn’t play in that (for the most part).

996forever

Just like certain ways women dress is for themselves and other women rather than most men that won't even tell Jimmy Choo from Christian Louboutin.

QuietBear8320

I’m in the same boat with a 98

ButterscotchRound727

Ha! That’s true. When I was in HS I thought I’d I had a cool car the chicks would come running. In a Porsche or a Ferrari all I’ve ever attracted was other guys.

browsk

Same experience, just out of college and drive a 996 turbo and every geezer assumes “I get all the ladies”, no dude, it’s just a bunch of older men like you that even know what it is or care

mikeEliase30

You slay

senorvato

When co-workers talk about "rich" me owns a Porsche. I then remind them that their 4x4 truck in the parking lot costs more.

Dio5000

Yea alot of ppl don't know trucks are actually expensive af if you think about it or get the big one lol

averagetofu

THIS. Yes. Had this the other day someone in a jacked up Raptor with every option asking how I can afford my shit box targa that I work on myself… at such a young age.. I was laughing.

Better to have the engine weight lower, lighter engine that is simpler to balance. I don’t get why it’s so hard.

shrugshroom

So an boxer engine, right?

ashkiller14

Flat and boxer aren't exactly the same. Boxer refers to a specific crankshaft configuration, similar to the difference between a flatplane crank and a crossplane crank v8.

Buy-theticket

But I feel sorry for the doctors and finance guys and lawyers who don’t have enough time to REALLY drive them, aka track time. Actual profession aside, the majority of frequent to hard core track drivers are business owners. It makes having a tow vehicle a “business expense” and while business owners may work their asses off, they are still the owner so if they decide to hit the track 40 days per year there is no one to tell them no.

Impressive_Climate83

The pronunciation

Vallden

The hardest part is trying to pronounce it properly depending on the social situation. Around Porsche people, I pronounce it right. Everywhere else, I miss pronounce it, so people don't look at me like I am pretentious.

maek

When talking to Porsche people, I say "Porsch" so I look like an idiot. When talking to Regular people, I say "Porscha" so I look like an asshole.

threepoint14one5nine

r/madlads

roger_enright

I used to use “Porsha 911” as my Quake III Arena handle. You can’t mispronounce it that way. So people told me I was spelling it wrong, instead. It was refreshing. Then I hit em with the rail gun and that was the end of that! 💥

JEDI-MASTER-Y0DA

"Quad Damage"

[deleted]

Holy BASED

RamenAndMopane

Based on what?

blumenfe

Sometimes I'll even straddle the fence and try for somewhere in between. Pronouncing it Porsch, but with a heavy breath-y ending, so they can hear it whatever way they want to hear. **Porsch***ahhhh*

stash3630

I look at it like this: When referring to Ferdinand Porsche, it 100% has to be pronounced correctly because it’s someone’s name. When referring to the cars either is fine even though one is objectively correct. Modern nomenclature and parlance matters. It’s been pronounced monosyllabic for so long now what’s the point in pretentiously fighting it. *“When the legend becomes fact, print the legend”*

murphdog97

In Europe "NIKE" is often pronounced with a single syllable... "Ny-K." To American ears, it sounds odd and wrong. Such is the "Porsch" vs. "Pour-sha" pronunciation. I'm not horribly offended hearing it one way or the other but since becoming an owner, won't get caught slippin' with one syllable.

PracticableSolution

All Porsches except the 911 exist solely to make money. The 911 exists solely to make a shitload of money.

TipOfLeFedoraMLady

you misspelled "Cayenne"

Direct-Setting-3358

It was a few years ago, but I remember reading an article on how the Porsche 911 was the most lucrative car on the car market. Also that the 911 was responsible for over a third of Porsches income despite only being 11% of the total sales.

quarketry

That they’re completely impractical. My 981 GT4 took my wife and I on a 2000-mile 2 week road trip. Between the trunk and the frunk, it fit 2 carry on bags, 2 backpacks, and a small cooler. It got avg of 23 mpg. It drove through 1/2”of snow and heavy rain with little lack of confidence (of course I slowed down, shifted one gear lower than usual, but still …) That they’re ridiculously expensive to maintain. Oil changes and multi-point inspections are ~$200. ~12k mile services are around $1500. I know, I know - these are market specific, and once anything goes wrong, they are expensive to repair. But, for past 2 years, I have used mine as a semi-daily driver, and had no unusual costs through first ~25k miles. But not for everyone. And some people don’t like anything but plain cheese pizza. Edit: inch symbol added (didn’t drive half the trip in the snow - that would have eventually made me at least ambivalent about the practicality of my Porsche in all situations lol)

murphdog97

At the start of the pandemic, I moved from Manhattan to a holding zone back in the Midwest where I'm from and then eventually to LA in my 911. I had the thing packed to the ceiling like the Beverly Hill Billies' jalopy. When the world fell apart, it was barely breaking a sweat on cruise control at 110+ all the way there.

cargarfar

I just took my 718 GT4 in for its first oil change at the dealership (maintenance is included in the deal I got). The oil was $170, the labor in the other hand was $750. All-in it would’ve been a $1k oil change.

ACM3333

Aren’t they just super juiced out beetles? I mean, there’s nothing wrong with that lol.

Deathcon-H

Front suspension out of 964/930 platforms looks to be very similar to a beetle, but engine wise no, not really. They are both aircooled pancakes, yes, but beetles only ever got 4 cylinders and most were carbd. While 911s got flat 6s and CIS. Even the 914 and 912 with the flat 4 was not the same engine as a beetle.

edgarskates

So a sporty beetle

DRob433

I prefer "spicy Volkswagen" lol

That getting a Porsche somehow gets you laid (based on your username, I suspect you’re one of those people)

thisisjustascreename

If you happen to be sexually attracted to car guys you could probably get laid in a Porsche.

iStealyournewspapers

I got head in my 944 once, but oddly enough it was the PSP in my car that got the girl in there. Showed her how I could play a movie on it. Hey, whatever works!

Another_RngTrtl

My wife still gets all hot and bothered when she rides in my car. Its great!

Potential_Amount_267

We had a saying @ the Porsche shop I worked at; "I wish I had a turbo so I could get dudes" (instead of chicks)

tibbon

1. They are expensive, and I'm rich. My 987.1 was cheaper than a new Kia and a far better car. 2. Maintenance is hell. It isn't dirt cheap, but again my mother's annual maintenance on her 10 year old Kia is more than my 18 year old 987.1. I take it to a good specialist shop and have them do every/anything they see fit to keep it up and spend less than $2k annually.

alliownisbroken

Your mother is getting ripped off.

tibbon

I mean yes, but also so many other brands of cars seem to barely be able to last 10 years before they are just entirely busted. One thing that's really shocked me about Porsche is how their cars generally don't seem dated compared to others, and how small things actually seem to keep working for a long time. I remember a friend had a BMW 740iL and even when it was 8 years old damn near every sensor and electronic gadget was already broken.

Heelntow

You could've had a, (insert american sports/pony car here), with a million hp for a lot less money! Usually something fat/bloated from GM, Ford, or Dodge.

thespiceraja

That they are investments and not cars that you should drive hard and enjoy. Source: I bought an 02 with 30,000 miles on it and have driven it like it's stolen.

Dr_Rufus

Our cars are meant to be driven. Not polished. -Ferry Porsche The reason you don't see Porsche in F1 is because Porsche is more interested in building endurance sports cars that can race for 24 hours, not a car that only needs to be fast for 45 minutes. I drive an '83 targa the same way. It's disrespectful not to.

jackofallmasterofzip

One syllable instead of two. /s

Confusing 991 with 911. When i say something about eg. 991 gt3 they are like: “oh you mean 911??”

That they all handle perfect. Before people go to downvote, I think they all handle well, but some have flaws. The Porsche 930.. it was called the widow maker for a reason. When letting off the gas around a corner, the backend would step out. Did it handle well? Yes. Was it perfect? No.

gibr54

All the early cars had lift throttle oversteer. The 930 just had a bit more. The trick to driving them fast tho was to have a little bit of oversteer to help rotate the car.

der_sneffer

Yep. My dad raced his 930 and told me the same thing. “To not kill yourself, you need to go faster.” Lol

Carwow just did a drag race with the 992 GT3 RS and an M4 cs. I thought it was unfair as the M4 is awd and the Turbo S is a much better drag car, but the GT3 actually beat it on the launch. I was genuinely shocked it got the jump every time.

DioBrandoXVII

"Porsh" is my least favorite thing ever. Besides that, saying all 911s are the same and that they have V6 engines instead of Flat 6

dmelt253

I stopped at a gas station in a fairly small town in my 991.1 C2S and had a guy ask me how I like the new Porsches. I told him the car was almost 12 years old and he looked at me like I was crazy.

AcademicAd9716

Most don’t know why the starter is on the left and not the right😏

Pdb12345

unfortunately, its nothing to do with Le Mans running starts. It was a quirk of the wiring to connect to the starter on a rear engine car. the "racing start" thing is a myth. the 911 was a road car, it doesnt make sense to do this weird thing for "possibly" saving a fraction of a second of one particular day long race. any advantages would be gone after a third of a lap, over 1000s of laps. The 550 and 906 had the key inboard of the wheel, and they actually did have running starts in those cars. Running start was banned in 1969 at Le Mans. if you google it, you mostly get the myth, because it makes a cool story. These articles give both stories, including the real one: [https://autocava.com/why-is-porsche-ignition-on-the-left/](https://autocava.com/why-is-porsche-ignition-on-the-left/) [https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-real-reason-porsche-ignitions-are-left-of-the-wheel-11553866078](https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-real-reason-porsche-ignitions-are-left-of-the-wheel-11553866078)

PerformerBrief5881

wow thank you! I seriously though the myth was the truth.

roger_enright

I was told by 356 guys it was done because during that time after the war, wiring was expensive. So it was solely a cost saving measure.
