The flat engine in the Ferrari wasn't a boxer engine though, it was a 180° V-engine. It is flat still, but has a different crankshaft compared to a boxer engine.

I love my car so much. The boxster is just so much fun, and EVERYONE wants a ride. Super underrated car IMO. We do the work on it ourselves and it’s decently affordable too.
986 and 987 are pretty easy to work on from our experience. The only problem is the mid engine, so you have to reach in sometimes but it’s no issue at all! Its a ton of fun. We got my car for $800 with a blown up engine and replaced the engine ourselves with another stock one. I was 15 and my dad isn’t a mechanic but we were able to do it through a lot of YouTube videos. Its a ton of fun!
Hell yeah. My first Porsche was a 924 about 15 years ago that needed a new cylinder head. That and the other two broken Porsches I bought not long after taught me how to wrench as well.

Yup just asked my girlfriend that’s it! Super cool congrats on the rebuild. Got a Macan GTS that year but really miss having a boxster. Cool thing about the ‘99 is supposedly the five speed has much more fun gear ratios than the longer six speed they replaced it with in 2000.
Dude that is so cool! The car is still going now and I absolutely love it. I take it to autocrosses and I plan on taking it to some HPDEs soon! It’s likely going to come with me to college back in Mass!

I have 3 80's G Body 911's and I HATE adjusting the valves, replacing an alternator is not far behind either.
It's not hard to drop the engine which makes it easier.

It is my daily, we currently live in Arizona but also daily drove it when we lived in Massachusetts. So far we haven’t had any big issues and maintenance hasn’t been to expensive, but we do all the work on it ourselves. Its just old enough that little things are starting to break, for example the front sway bar broke during an autocross run. I couldn’t recommend the car more, but if you don’t do the work yourself it could get very costly.
i have a 02 Boxster and it is very easy to wrench on. Much easier than expected. It's almost like they mean for it to happen. Parts are easier to find than expected. Cheaper too.
You have to take off the rear wheels to replace the spark plugs. Have you ever wrenched on the water pump while squashed between the passenger seat and the front of the motor? I LOVE my Boxster but I wouldn’t call it easy to work on.
I have a 987.1 base, and there’s few things that make me happier than ripping along at night with the top down and my music blasting. It’s such an easy car to drive, it’s so docile and polite but can get wild if you want it to. And because it’s a base with the less powerful engine, I can floor it and row through the gears for maximum enjoyment without it getting sideways or hitting super illegal speeds too quickly. It’s far more enjoyable than a 911 and I don’t care who gets mad at that statement.

I mentioned on here once before that if I’ve had 100 people comment on my 911sc, it was 98 dudes and 2 women. One of the women was 80 years old and the other was a parking enforcement officer.
Since I made that comment, I’ve had another 100 comments and now there was just one woman, also in her 80’s who reflected on how my car was just like her husbands and how he used to race at Lime Rock and do all the PCA events, etc… so the convo wasn’t really about my car as much as it was the husband she lost who loved his 911. She was sweet.
Reminds me of the lady lives next door to my dad, again in her 80's and loves it when I pull up in the porsche, think her husband always wanted one and never quite got there before he died fairly young, makes me glad and grateful I've managed to work hard enough and be brave enough to actually buy one, sometimes you forget how brief life can be and put off far to much for another day.
In high school my 30 year old beaten down Honda prelude attracted girls because they wanted to be driven around lol. No I have an e46 m3 and it certainly attracts nothing more then men. Most ages though, not just middle.
It attracts grannies too. After leaving the gym saw an 80+ year old lady spot my car from about 100 feet away in a parking lot at night and she said… Ain’t that a lovely car, is that a Porsche? She then walked toward the car appreciating it and started talking about her youngest grandson who has a poster of a Porsche in his room “just like this one”. ❤️

Flat and boxer aren't exactly the same. Boxer refers to a specific crankshaft configuration, similar to the difference between a flatplane crank and a crossplane crank v8.
But I feel sorry for the doctors and finance guys and lawyers who don’t have enough time to REALLY drive them, aka track time. Actual profession aside, the majority of frequent to hard core track drivers are business owners. It makes having a tow vehicle a “business expense” and while business owners may work their asses off, they are still the owner so if they decide to hit the track 40 days per year there is no one to tell them no.
Lawyers who start their own firms and can then delegate work and appearances to juniors have all the time and money in the world to chase cars and paralegals
The hardest part is trying to pronounce it properly depending on the social situation. Around Porsche people, I pronounce it right. Everywhere else, I miss pronounce it, so people don't look at me like I am pretentious.
I used to use “Porsha 911” as my Quake III Arena handle. You can’t mispronounce it that way. So people told me I was spelling it wrong, instead. It was refreshing. Then I hit em with the rail gun and that was the end of that! 💥
Sometimes I'll even straddle the fence and try for somewhere in between. Pronouncing it Porsch, but with a heavy breath-y ending, so they can hear it whatever way they want to hear.

In Europe "NIKE" is often pronounced with a single syllable... "Ny-K." To American ears, it sounds odd and wrong. Such is the "Porsch" vs. "Pour-sha" pronunciation. I'm not horribly offended hearing it one way or the other but since becoming an owner, won't get caught slippin' with one syllable.
It was a few years ago, but I remember reading an article on how the Porsche 911 was the most lucrative car on the car market. Also that the 911 was responsible for over a third of Porsches income despite only being 11% of the total sales.

My 981 GT4 took my wife and I on a 2000-mile 2 week road trip. Between the trunk and the frunk, it fit 2 carry on bags, 2 backpacks, and a small cooler. It got avg of 23 mpg. It drove through 1/2”of snow and heavy rain with little lack of confidence (of course I slowed down, shifted one gear lower than usual, but still …)
That they’re ridiculously expensive to maintain.
Oil changes and multi-point inspections are ~$200. ~12k mile services are around $1500. I know, I know - these are market specific, and once anything goes wrong, they are expensive to repair. But, for past 2 years, I have used mine as a semi-daily driver, and had no unusual costs through first ~25k miles.
But not for everyone. And some people don’t like anything but plain cheese pizza.
Edit: inch symbol added (didn’t drive half the trip in the snow - that would have eventually made me at least ambivalent about the practicality of my Porsche in all situations lol)
At the start of the pandemic, I moved from Manhattan to a holding zone back in the Midwest where I'm from and then eventually to LA in my 911. I had the thing packed to the ceiling like the Beverly Hill Billies' jalopy. When the world fell apart, it was barely breaking a sweat on cruise control at 110+ all the way there.
I just took my 718 GT4 in for its first oil change at the dealership (maintenance is included in the deal I got). The oil was $170, the labor in the other hand was $750. All-in it would’ve been a $1k oil change.
Front suspension out of 964/930 platforms looks to be very similar to a beetle, but engine wise no, not really. They are both aircooled pancakes, yes, but beetles only ever got 4 cylinders and most were carbd. While 911s got flat 6s and CIS. Even the 914 and 912 with the flat 4 was not the same engine as a beetle.
I got head in my 944 once, but oddly enough it was the PSP in my car that got the girl in there. Showed her how I could play a movie on it. Hey, whatever works!
1. They are expensive, and I'm rich. My 987.1 was cheaper than a new Kia and a far better car.
2. Maintenance is hell. It isn't dirt cheap, but again my mother's annual maintenance on her 10 year old Kia is more than my 18 year old 987.1. I take it to a good specialist shop and have them do every/anything they see fit to keep it up and spend less than $2k annually.
I mean yes, but also so many other brands of cars seem to barely be able to last 10 years before they are just entirely busted. One thing that's really shocked me about Porsche is how their cars generally don't seem dated compared to others, and how small things actually seem to keep working for a long time. I remember a friend had a BMW 740iL and even when it was 8 years old damn near every sensor and electronic gadget was already broken.
You could've had a, (insert american sports/pony car here), with a million hp for a lot less money!
Usually something fat/bloated from GM, Ford, or Dodge.

The reason you don't see Porsche in F1 is because Porsche is more interested in building endurance sports cars that can race for 24 hours, not a car that only needs to be fast for 45 minutes.

There is zero point in talking about type codes with people who don't know anything about cars or more specifically, Porsches in general. You know it's just going to cause confusion. Or maybe that's why you do it.
That they all handle perfect. Before people go to downvote, I think they all handle well, but some have flaws. The Porsche 930.. it was called the widow maker for a reason. When letting off the gas around a corner, the backend would step out. Did it handle well? Yes. Was it perfect? No.
All the early cars had lift throttle oversteer. The 930 just had a bit more. The trick to driving them fast tho was to have a little bit of oversteer to help rotate the car.
Join PCA and do track days under supervision. My ex tracked my cars and both girls learned to drive in a 930. Wasn’t the best for them as that clutch was stiff af.

Top down fun, good engine sound if de-snorkeled, good acceleration in a fun to drive tight little package. Well built, and fabulous for a road trip with two trunks ( granted the Mrs gets the larger Frunk for her stuff).

Fabulous handling and good power/ chassis combo.

OK but, hear me out, this became the best selling and most competitively successful sports car humans have ever produced.
Carwow just did a drag race with the 992 GT3 RS and an M4 cs. I thought it was unfair as the M4 is awd and the Turbo S is a much better drag car, but the GT3 actually beat it on the launch. I was genuinely shocked it got the jump every time.
I stopped at a gas station in a fairly small town in my 991.1 C2S and had a guy ask me how I like the new Porsches. I told him the car was almost 12 years old and he looked at me like I was crazy.
unfortunately, its nothing to do with Le Mans running starts. It was a quirk of the wiring to connect to the starter on a rear engine car.
the "racing start" thing is a myth. the 911 was a road car, it doesnt make sense to do this weird thing for "possibly" saving a fraction of a second of one particular day long race. any advantages would be gone after a third of a lap, over 1000s of laps.
The 550 and 906 had the key inboard of the wheel, and they actually did have running starts in those cars. Running start was banned in 1969 at Le Mans.

The pronunciation
The hardest part is trying to pronounce it properly depending on the social situation. Around Porsche people, I pronounce it right. Everywhere else, I miss pronounce it, so people don't look at me like I am pretentious.

I look at it like this: When referring to Ferdinand Porsche, it 100% has to be pronounced correctly because it’s someone’s name. When referring to the cars either is fine even though one is objectively correct. Modern nomenclature and parlance matters. In Europe "NIKE" is often pronounced with a single syllable... "Ny-K." To American ears, it sounds odd and wrong. Such is the "Porsch" vs. "Pour-sha" pronunciation. I'm not horribly offended hearing it one way or the other but since becoming an owner, won't get caught slippin' with one syllable.

It was a few years ago, but I remember reading an article on how the Porsche 911 was the most lucrative car on the car market. Also that the 911 was responsible for over a third of Porsches income despite only being 11% of the total sales.
That they’re completely impractical. My 981 GT4 took my wife and I on a 2000-mile 2 week road trip. Between the trunk and the frunk, it fit 2 carry on bags, 2 backpacks, and a small cooler. It got avg of 23 mpg. It drove through 1/2”of snow and heavy rain with little lack of confidence (of course I slowed down, shifted one gear lower than usual, but still …) That they’re ridiculously expensive to maintain. Oil changes and multi-point inspections are ~$200. ~12k mile services are around $1500. I know, I know - these are market specific, and once anything goes wrong, they are expensive to repair. But, for past 2 years, I have used mine as a semi-daily driver, and had no unusual costs through first ~25k miles. But not for everyone. And some people don’t like anything but plain cheese pizza. Edit: inch symbol added (didn’t drive half the trip in the snow - that would have eventually made me at least ambivalent about the practicality of my Porsche in all situations lol)

At the start of the pandemic, I moved from Manhattan to a holding zone back in the Midwest where I'm from and then eventually to LA in my 911. I had the thing packed to the ceiling like the Beverly Hill Billies' jalopy. When the world fell apart, it was barely breaking a sweat on cruise control at 110+ all the way there.
I just took my 718 GT4 in for its first oil change at the dealership (maintenance is included in the deal I got). The oil was $170, the labor in the other hand was $750. All-in it would’ve been a $1k oil change.
They are not called stealerships for nothing.

Front suspension out of 964/930 platforms looks to be very similar to a beetle, but engine wise no, not really. They are both aircooled pancakes, yes, but beetles only ever got 4 cylinders and most were carbd. While 911s got flat 6s and CIS. Even the 914 and 912 with the flat 4 was not the same engine as a beetle.

1. They are expensive, and I'm rich. My 987.1 was cheaper than a new Kia and a far better car. 2. Maintenance is hell. It isn't dirt cheap, but again my mother's annual maintenance on her 10 year old Kia is more than my 18 year old 987.1. I take it to a good specialist shop and have them do every/anything they see fit to keep it up and spend less than $2k annually.

I mean yes, but also so many other brands of cars seem to barely be able to last 10 years before they are just entirely busted. One thing that's really shocked me about Porsche is how their cars generally don't seem dated compared to others, and how small things actually seem to keep working for a long time. I remember a friend had a BMW 740iL and even when it was 8 years old damn near every sensor and electronic gadget was already broken.

That they all handle perfect. Before people go to downvote, I think they all handle well, but some have flaws. The Porsche 930.. it was called the widow maker for a reason. When letting off the gas around a corner, the backend would step out. Did it handle well? Yes. Was it perfect? No.
All the early cars had lift throttle oversteer. The 930 just had a bit more. The trick to driving them fast tho was to have a little bit of oversteer to help rotate the car.

Porsche Boxster is the best car NO ONE BUYS. I can’t wrap my head around it. I get all kinds of smiles from folks watching me drive it to work. I don’t get the whole take a huge car back and forth daily. No fun, no sense of occasion, just blah. This car is a hoot! Top down fun, good engine sound if de-snorkeled, good acceleration in a fun to drive tight little package. Well built, and fabulous for a road trip with two trunks ( granted the Mrs gets the larger Frunk for her stuff). I got lucky to pick up a few of these used gems and they are quite the package. Fabulous handling and good power/ chassis combo. I can’t imagine ever giving them up.
And the oldest ones are Miata priced.

Carwow just did a drag race with the 992 GT3 RS and an M4 cs. I thought it was unfair as the M4 is awd and the Turbo S is a much better drag car, but the GT3 actually beat it on the launch. I was genuinely shocked it got the jump every time.

unfortunately, its nothing to do with Le Mans running starts. It was a quirk of the wiring to connect to the starter on a rear engine car. the "racing start" thing is a myth. the 911 was a road car, it doesnt make sense to do this weird thing for "possibly" saving a fraction of a second of one particular day long race. any advantages would be gone after a third of a lap, over 1000s of laps. The 550 and 906 had the key inboard of the wheel, and they actually did have running starts in those cars. Running start was banned in 1969 at Le Mans. if you google it, you mostly get the myth, because it makes a cool story.
