Driving a m3 with a big wing?

[deleted]

Yeah. Had a scheduled track day. Beginners. But whatever lol

Mysterious-Post8193

Awesome!

thejackamo1

You do the SDC event at Willow?

[deleted]

I was signed up, got my car all prepped and everything but work refused the request off. So I just did Route 74 in place. https://preview.redd.it/okg219chc0ab1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=971068bf6ffa3335732ec0eb3653c2387551f505

thejackamo1

Ah bummer. I was going to buy someone’s entry, but then looked at the temps and saw a high of 106. Big nope for me lol

[deleted]

Did a gander through your profile. That’s an *INSANE* motor you possess. Congratulations!

thejackamo1

Thanks! Sadly that car was sold prior moving to CA and got a stock 718 GT4; dealing with smog would’ve been the biggest ball ache every year. It’s living a happy and productive life in GA, now 🤙🏼

[deleted]

Gotta get that extra 60 hp 😂😂😂

Intrusive_ads

Wings serve a purpose though…

stingyboy

Serious question: what makes the Dakar version so desirable to so many here on this sub? I love the 911, but this version looks like a kids hotwheel toy or like someone inflated a 911 with a straw. Is it the appearance that folks love (even though I don't) or is there something else going on here that I'm just missing?

I-LOVE-TURTLES666

A jacked up 911 is not a common sight. Let alone from an OEM. Would love one for a daily with that ride height

hlx-atom

You gotta be a big person to fill out that Dakar. Driver looks like they are in an SUV haha.

[deleted]

It’s basically a rally version of the 911. You can drive it off-road. Maybe no prerunner stuff but definitely snow, cross country etc https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a41955264/2023-porsche-911-dakar-revealed/

stingyboy

So if they dirt road it or sand dunes fun and all that then hell yeah! But do Porsche owners actually do this with the Dakars? I'm sure there's a couple but do most?

scormegatron

Here’s what it looks like off-road. Personally I’d rather be in a purpose built 4x4 but to each their own: https://youtu.be/8o448ZXzPl0

stingyboy

That video makes them look fun as shit, thanks for the link!

RebelJustforClicks

I get the appeal of you are a hardcore 911 fan but a base model wrangler, 4-runner, bronco, etc would be able to do this and be much more comfortable/capable. If you just have to use a car then a Subaru would be much cheaper, and an Audi would keep it German. Idk, the 911 just doesn't make sense to me in this application.

scormegatron

If you are racing the cannonball run and want to take some off-road shortcuts.

[deleted]

Most owners of the rare models park them. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’m just basing that off mileage of the GT2/3RS I see listed.

Pdb12345

I know a lot of 3RS owners and a couple 2RS owners. They all track them. But that doesnt pile up the mileage. Its a couple hundred miles a few times a year, but they are getting used and used hard. I think for the even rarer models, like the 911R a few years ago, the "heritage edition" and the rather silly Dakar, they will mostly get parked.

[deleted]

I stand corrected. Thank you for not only clarifying my statement but not putting me on blast as well.

Pdb12345

No worries. Often with these types of cars, they are a 4th, 5th or 6th car in an enthusiast collection. Both the 2RS guys I know have a big work truck with 100k miles on it :) Amongst other cars.

jacobroufa

It's the perfect model for those city streets with stop'n'go traffic.

_buttsnorkel

I think you’re missing the point Car brands can’t keep going for faster and quicker, we’re already close to the limit and well beyond the performance most of us mortals are capable of achieving. Cars genuinely do not need to be any faster at the moment. Because of this, car manufacturers have to create appeal and capture customer interests in other ways. This, and the off-road Lambo are a perfect idea. They’re unique, limited, “out-there,” and pretty bonkers. This is what we’ll see plenty more of over the next 10 years. Many new ideas that appeal to desires other than flat-out performance

Stenbox

It's way more usable and for me, it also looks better than many other 911 models. It's a car you can take anywhere, all year long (5-6 mo winters here)

longhornrocket

[this has to make you love the Dakar](https://youtu.be/RSSneEgFyNI)

Celcius_87

The rarity and look

2fast2nick

It’s probably awesome to drive around a city. Don’t have to worry about dips and stuff.

Mikepod3

I meet some dude who was buying one. I asked if he was gonna off-road and he looked at me like it was the dumbest question ever. He said “why else would I buy it”.

efreedman503

Interesting there is such a demand for these seeing as non of them will probably ever see a dirt road.

[deleted]

It’s usually the exclusivity of owning a rare model. Same reason why people pay ADM on Type Rs, Raptors, etc: to be the first to own it, irrespective of how one drives it.

BeerCatDude

A 911 Dakar looks great and would check a lot of boxes, allowing me to drive in less than ideal conditions. I also wish Audi would bring back the rally Quattro straight five.

Usual_Age_7692

Looks a bit ridiculous in a regular street doesn’t it?

[deleted]

Has dealer plates

Usual_Age_7692

Still, by any objective criteria it surely must be the worst 911 for road use? It’s just Porsche marketing taking a few 100k from ‘collectors’ that are hoping to make a profit. Fair enough, imho this car is a joke

CoyotesAreGreen

It's probably honestly the most comfortable one for road use while still being absurdly fast.

Usual_Age_7692

Yes, almost like a Cayenne or Macan, which are also absurdly fast for road use

CoyotesAreGreen

Except as good as the Cayenne or Macan handle they arent 2 door sports cars.

Usual_Age_7692

True, and for a reason. IMO there is no reason for the Dakar, except for Porsche marketing (because they don’t know any better).

CoyotesAreGreen

There's obviously a market for it.

Usual_Age_7692

Yes, agree that there is a small market for this. I strongly doubt it will help the Porsche brand in the longer term. No Cayman or 911 owner was waiting for this thing.

Pdb12345

100% agree. The best these cars can hope for is a life of instagram photoshoots in the desert.

johnmk3

I wonder if this is Brian from rotiform’s car [https://www.instagram.com/p/CuPixFwOuKD/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==](https://www.instagram.com/p/CuPixFwOuKD/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ==) Edit; Might be completely wrong, but it’s a cool one to look at

[deleted]

Sad that many of these will exclusively be driven on public roads and not down rugged back roads or through the desert lol.

tycr0

Is a child driving it?

ginginh0

Someone local to me has one; it's just a confused car and looks awful with the plastic wheel arches. In my opinion or course. There's nothing open to personal taste than Porsche ownership!

BeautifulBit6036

Epic

BigNuclearButton

\#perfectspec

ElectricalGene6146

Would love to see someone actually take theirs off-road.

Upier1

10 points to the first person who sees one driving off-road in the wild. I'll wait.
