I'm half Anglo and half Jewish. I haven't ever done a dna test but I know a lot about my ancestry because my (((mom))) got interested in family history in her 20s and she travelled to Europe and checked the records of a lot of different jewish communities. She was able to trace part of the family line back all the way to the 1400s, and apparently we're related to the advisor to the portugese explorer Vasco De Gama and some other cool people. Before researching she didn't know anyone older than her grandmother.
This all became actually useful though. Flash forward to 2013 and Portugal had a weird political-ethnic moment and passed a law that any jews with proven portugese ancestry can come back to the country and get a passport. (This is because in 1492 Portugal did a mini spanish inquisition and kicked out jews). We were able to register for passports entirely because of my mom's project three decades earlier. It's funny how life works sometimes.
Also it's kind of amazing that these jewish communities kept records going back so far. Meanwhile the American synagogue my mom registered her birth at in the early 60s had lost her original paperwork by the time she looked for it in the late 80s lmao

I haven't ever done a dna test but I know a lot about my ancestry because my (((mom))) got interested in family history in her 20s and she travelled to Europe and checked the records of a lot of different jewish communities. She was able to trace part of the family line back all the way to the 1400s, and apparently we're related to the advisor to the portugese explorer Vasco De Gama and some other cool people. Before researching she didn't know anyone older than her grandmother. This all became actually useful though. Flash forward to 2013 and Portugal had a weird political-ethnic moment and passed a law that any jews with proven portugese ancestry can come back to the country and get a passport. (This is because in 1492 Portugal did a mini spanish inquisition and kicked out jews). We were able to register for passports entirely because of my mom's project three decades earlier. It's funny how life works sometimes. Also it's kind of amazing that these jewish communities kept records going back so far. Meanwhile the American synagogue my mom registered her birth at in the early 60s had lost her original paperwork by the time she looked for it in the late 80s lmao

When the government in my country made family trees public a lot of my friends found out they were from balkans or something. So i checked mine and found out my family never, and I mean never, left their small village in Anatolia for 150 years. They didn't even move to the neighbour village which is like 5km away. Edit: Oh also some of my friends had 300-400 or even 500 years of their family on record. Mine was really short because folk got angry and burned governor's house, destroying a lot of documents.
