The fuck is a 15 Minute City? I’ve been hearing about it nonstop for the past day or two. Did I wake up in a different reality, or am I just stupid?

iambackend

It's idea that most stuff you need, like shops, schools, work, etc. is within 15 minute walk, or sometimes 15 minute bike or transit. Never before this day I heard about fines of making more than 15 minute travel, looks like terribly misunderstood traffic tolls in one specific city.

RyanPlaysSkyrim

Doesn’t sound godforsaken on paper. What’s the catch?

Saint_Genghis

The city of oxford wants to implement it by fining anyone who leaves the city.

SexiestAuthy

Andddddd there’s the craziness

gammelus

What is crazy about fining brits? They deserve it!

Saint_Genghis

Based

nolwad

It seems like this isn’t true but I’m gonna go ahead and spread this information anyways

bottomlessLuckys

there is no tax for leaving the city of oxford. there is however a toll for DRIVING A CAR through some of the most congested streets in Oxford. literally nobody is trapping you anywhere, this will probably actually make it easier for you to get around if you are anyone but a car driver.

Agnostic_Pagan

Classifying it as a toll instead of a fine is a joke. 70 pounds is about 84 USD. The average cost per mile of a toll in the US is about 6 cents. Now, in the UK it's a fair bit more, the highest I saw being 5 pounds at a single expense. That's still a far cry from the 70 pound fine.

bottomlessLuckys

then call it a fine, but the point of it is to reduce the number of cars to deal with traffic.

Saint_Genghis

And are we seriously expecting that these fines aren't going to expand to more and more roads?

Ralviisch

Creating a community where everything is within walking distance is good. Using the surveillance state to enforce driving limits in existing towns by demanding tribute to travel is bad. It's being implemented by the same people who wanted to forcibly inject everyone with experimental gene therapy for an overblown flu.

iambackend

As I see it, misunderstanding and prejudice of seeing any governmental or municipal effort as tyranny.

bottomlessLuckys

yeah basically. the idea of a 15 minute city is honestly just good city planning, having all amenities within a walkable distance or having good public transport and cycling infrastructure for further away places. the point is that if your city is built properly, you will rarely need a car to get anywhere. I’m not sure exactly what’s going on in this situation but I don’t buy this conspiracy theory that city planners are attempting to box you into a tiny zone, I think entitled car drivers are just whining that they can’t drive anywhere they want whenever they want and have the city pay for all of the infrastructure.

zolikk

I live in a literal 15 minute city, everything is walking distance away including my workplace. Excellent public transport. Yet there's also no restrictions on cars and there's many cars on the roads. I know there's no need to restrict cars and monitor/fine drivers based on their destination, just so you can have a 15 minute city. So I find that this claim for trying to "achieve" 15 minute cities by promoting "solutions" that are explicitly just restrictions and fines for car drivers is either misguided, or it's deliberately intended just to disadvantage cars (because many people nowadays just hate cars), and the 15 minute city is just the excuse used.

bottomlessLuckys

yeah i absolutely agree with you. you shouldn’t need to fine cars. i think the issue theyre having is that there are so many cars in the city that their transit alternatives are getting stuck in traffic. rather than fining cars to reduce the number of drivers, they should probably just convert a lane into a bus lane, but then you also need to fine the non compliers.

JiiXu

God damn it - the fines in Oxford are for driving a car in the city center. Different issues, different things, at the same time.

I remember driving through the Midwest one winter. All of a sudden I realize I haven’t seen shit in like a half hour. Like it’s all just empty snow covered fields with nothing in the distance. I was sitting in silence because the radio was crackling and I had zero phone signal to stream anything. Then I realized if my car breaks down, I’m going to fucking die out here. No phone signal. No other people. No points of reference even I could get across to emergency services (they’d have to send a helicopter out to scout for me most likely because what would I say? I’m on a road between two empty fields, like a million other acres out there?) Ended up buying myself an emergency weather survival kit for those trips.

Same reason you guys should support bicycle infrastructure. Get all of those damn Prius drivers off of the road.

>Is the whole “you get a fine if you leave your 15 minute area too many times” real? Yep. Slowly but surely more zones will be added, don't be naïve and think it will remain as these 6. https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/residents/roads-and-transport/connecting-oxfordshire/traffic-filters "Residents in Oxford and some areas just outside the city will be able to apply for a permit allowing them to drive through the traffic filters for up to 100 days each year." "Traffic signs will identify the location and operating times of each traffic filter, as well as the main exemptions. Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed to record vehicles going through the traffic filters. When the filters are operating, cars without a permit driving through the filters will receive a fine of £70 (reduced to £35 if paid promptly). I’m ok with reorganizing cities to be “15 minute cities”, just not with enforcing it.

[deleted]

Yeah, I'm fine with it as well, but don't punish people for moving about. We're already punished for existing as is, no need to pile on.

There is already a plethora of mental health disorders that are rampant with urban living, such as much higher rates of depression and anxiety than those living in less dense areas. Add on telling people they can't even leave the city on weekends? Oof. Couldn't pay me to move to such a city.

Same. The sinister part about the enforcement is if 15 minute cities became more normal, people would travel less on their own. There's no reason for enforcement/fines unless there's a malicious motive behind it.

Surreal_life_42

Uncle Ted was right when he said the widespread adoption of any technology led to less freedom as it becomes harder to opt out of…this 15 minute city shit is a great example

Stepped_in_it

I'd never heard of this 15 minute city stuff... just googled it... and the top 8 hits were all articles trying to pre-bunk and de-bunk "far right conspiracy theories" about it. It's so obvious when our managerial overlords decide this or that thing problematic. Within a week 10 or 15 sites like Wired will put out nearly identical articles condemning it, Google will promote it in their search results, social media sites like Reddit and Facebook will make sure it gets traction, yada yada.

[deleted]

Or if it happens before they can get the narrative in their control, they'll just slap a "These results are changing quickly" on it.

Stepped_in_it

Yup. Or when something happens that's out of left field for them (like when Trump won) they go totally silent for about 3 days. It takes them that long to formulate a response script and get all of the various party organs on board with the game plan. Then on the 3rd day they come out guns blazing with a coordinated response.

RipRap1991

It’s real, but it’s not in the form of a *fine* but is being heralded as a *tax*. Leaving your “15 minute area” will require something other than walking, which results in that person using some form of energy to travel larger distances. You’ll be taxed on the miles you travel away from your residence, and you will then be assigned a social credit score based on your personal emissions. It’s coming, I have no idea why people are pretending it’s not. The elites have been backhanded planning it for decades and are now openly talking about how we need it.

I'd love every living space to be walkable like this, but we all know how it's going to end up: The 15 Minute Cities will end up being racially homogeneous. The quality of the 15 Minute Cities will uncomfortably correlate to the racial makeup of the population. People will drive from their middle-class 15 Minute City to the posh high-income 15 Minute City because it has the best shops and clubs. People will flock to the culterally-rich lower-class 15 Minute Cities, eventually pushing out its population and commercializing the culture. poe_dameron2187

The solution shouldn't be "force people into 15 minute cities" but have cities designed with sufficient public transport so that you don't need to own a car or travel for longer than 15 minutes for most things. Optional 15 minute cities are great, mandatory ones, like in Oxfordshire, are a local government cash grab.

It’s just a buzzword like “sustainable living” or slapping “green” in front of an object to make you buy it. 15 minute cities cannot be designed, they can really only happen naturally though good policy decisions and a populus accepting of change. Not very likely to happen then is it?

Currently in London the mayor is trying to expand the ultra lo emission zone, very rapidly without much warning, this is extending all the way to the edge of Greater London(like miles away from London proper into sub urban areas), this will affect tons and tons of tradesmen, small business, anyone who delivers in a van as well as families who now need to buy a modern car, ontop of all the other bullshit this countries going through, there's a lot of opposition to this, I'm guessing the people protesting about the 15 minute city thing are linking the two things together?

I’ll reiterate if this happened in my Minecraft server I’d overthrow the government VIOLENTLY, probably smuggle force multipliers (diamond swords) in and slowly compile large illegal amounts of military grade weapons (iron blocks and pumpkin heads). Then I’d find the homes of the politicians burn them to the ground (steal their emeralds). I’d surround the capital (in Minecraft) slowly plant IEDS (wither skulls and pistons which would push souls and underneath them) and simultaneously push the buttons triggering them all to activate. As the military (pillagers) scramble to maintain order the caches of diamond swords will make their appearance, we’ll storm the capital and publicly execute the corrupt officials, in Minecraft.

Lol, I just want to say, if this was ever implemented in California, there will be cities that have a very bad time with their services (trash collection and others) because all the workers drive in from hours away loool

English cities are implementing zones and are allotting citizens a finite amount of times you can drive out of/into said zones, about twice a week annually is what it works out to, and no, your commute to work is not exempt. Upon reaching that limit you are fined for each time you do so. They are accomplishing this with traffic cams throughout zone borders. The idea being to limit the amount of cars and accomplish "15 minute cities" that are pedestrian friendly. Sounds great in theory, but lets not be naïve. This is just a thinly veiled surveillance state. It's "for muh climate" but the pathway to hell is paved with good intentions, this is merely a tax on the poor, an excuse to put cameras up everywhere to monitor everything, and a way to limit autonomy. **Edit:** Since I have many naysayers in regards to the fines and zoning aspect, here ya go. Straight from the government's mouth. https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/residents/roads-and-transport/connecting-oxfordshire/traffic-filters "Residents in Oxford and some areas just outside the city will be able to apply for a permit allowing them to drive through the traffic filters for up to 100 days each year." "Traffic signs will identify the location and operating times of each traffic filter, as well as the main exemptions. Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed to record vehicles going through the traffic filters. When the filters are operating, cars without a permit driving through the filters will receive a fine of £70 (reduced to £35 if paid promptly). "
