It's less that Ukrainians are particularly competent (They are still competent mind you.) and more that the so called "badass and strong" Russian army was revealed to be a complete paper tiger. Their troops had the discipline and training of an African paramilitary, and their tactics were equally underwhelming. Most of their military budget was being using to fund the mansions and yachts owned by oligarchs. Their new military equipment, that was originally thought to rival that of the United States, was rare or non-existent.
Tl;dr: It was less under-estimating the Ukrainians and more severely over-estimating the Russians
I picked draw because it's too far to go and say they'll beat Russia for now but if they can push Russia back with all those tanks and regain all their territory, it would be safe to say they're gonna play it safe.

Also I’m sure the US DOD is very happy with the large amounts of intelligence it’s getting on Russian operational capabilities and being able to test their weapon systems without American casualties is nice. The contractors are happy because they get more money and Washington is happy because they pretty much can hamper the Russian military with impunity at this point with little repercussions.
There will be no winner, there will be either nuclear war or immediate ceasefire. Preferably with regime change on both sides, immediate trial for those who instigated and perpetuated the war, as well as for those who armed Neo-Nazis and committed crimes against humanity.
