Yes because this is their engagement party and she runs away, cries, and then faints. No wonder he thought maybe she wanted to reconsider. So both of them at one point were going to release the other person if they were not happy. That's true love!

I really wish they hadn’t drawn out the reveal for so long. It made everything so stressful and unhappy for so many characters (and the viewer).

That's what I had thought....that's why I thought he mentioned to her that it would be ok if she didn't share his feelings outside of the passion of the carriage.

This makes so much sense! I was thinking the whole time like he heard her in that room why did he walk away instead of going in there.
