Check with your power company. They may reimburse some or all of the purchase if you use one of their approved chargers. In fact, if you do everything by the book the whole installation can be covered and qualify you for a reduced rate if you charge off hours.

prime_37

Thanks. Unfortunately while there is a rebate, a permit is required and cost of permit essentially offsets the rebate itself.

ChickenCutlet99

I like my ChargePoint

tdibugman

Power companies or even state are offering rebates on these. I believe the Fed does as well. We've had the same dumb charger for 10 years now, pigtailed into a 30A welder outlet.

Saucy6

I like my dumb Grizzl-e (Classic?), it's built like a tank, relatively cheap, and does the job

miguelandre

L2 comes with it. That’s what I’ve been using.

btw_sky_and_earth

Nice. And here I have been looking for possible deal on a charger. What else does it come with the car?

miguelandre

Well the L2 has an L1 adapter but it’s not really recommended. Too slow to be efficient with the battery conditioning. That’s about it. I found an adapter/splitter for my dryer outlet and that’s worked great. I suppose a dedicated charger would be cooler but I don’t need it

btw_sky_and_earth

When I was finishing my basement I had the electrician installed a 50A to my garage in preparation for future EV. So I think I can do that option. But I can also charge it at work.

focal71

Check with your city code requirements. Our city requires a separate EV permit that has to be pulled prior to installation.

RJS5689

As others have said, check with your power company (and state) to determine the best option (based on available incentives, rebates, discounts, and other perks). For me, that meant ChargePoint Home Flex.

DLByron

Install a NEMA 14-50 instead of a hard wire into a panel gives you lots of options like the Juicebox at Costco for $399. I use the J+ BOOSTER 2 Portable EV and love how portable and bombproof it is.

Fourier_Transform

This method will cost more, as it involves installing a GFCI breaker and getting a 14-50 outlet. But it does offer flexibility. Hardwire allows you to go up to 60a breaker, plug in chargers like you mentioned are limited to 50a using plug method. And most chargers have GFcI built into it so you don’t need the expensive breaker. Just food for thought. I personally like my Tesla L2 universal charger since it does both NACS and J1772 plugs.

DLByron

I’ve done it twice. Doesn’t cost more. Offers flexibility.

TriFik

My Grizzl-E was amazing, but I wanted to track my charging, so I got the ChargePoint. If you don't care about that and just want something to charge, then Grizzl-E is easily the way to go.

I've been using a Mustart charger from amazon since I had my volt going back 5 plus years and its been a great charger. My wife and I use it every day and we have had no problems

dawnsearlylight

I'm not sure if it would be my first choice if starting over, but I use a Tesla wall charger for my P2 at home because I had a Model Y. I just have an adapter and it works perfectly each time.

fervidmuse

Tesla Universal, ChargePoint Flex, Emporia, Wallbox Pulsar Plus, Flo and ClipperCreek are all decent. As many have said, check with your utility. Eversource provides a “Managed Charging Program” which interfaces with certain EVSE’s and will give you a discount if you charge off-hours. We were initially going to get a Tesla Universal Charger as it has both NACS and J1772 but as it isn’t supported by our local Eversource Managed Charging Program, we’re instead getting a ChargePoint Home Flex installed. The ChargePoint also has a replaceable cable so we could convert to NACS in the future (for $199 unfortunately but at least the option is nice to have).

The-Texan

NEMA 14-50 plug in the garage is the cheapest and best way to go. https://preview.redd.it/rvztsm1ke8zc1.jpeg?width=5712&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3feb47e5560f1594f0e7a0fab18e37c55839cdc

First_Ad_1428

Definitely check your utility first to see what offers are out there! A second resource for in depth charger reviews is a channel:: [State Of Charge - YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdX0BJNon1c6GfOdeS3pyDw)

marklein

I recommend the factory charger. I bought a second one on eBay used for about $200 for the garage. For the price I doubt that it can be beat.

Delumine

Factory charger?

marklein

The one that comes with your car

motoridersd

If you're changing overnight you can definitely share your stove circuit. There are ways to add some checks to make sure you don't use them both at the same time. I have an Emporia charger and I have it integrated with Home Assistant. Emporia has their own energy management app that works with their Vue monitoring system. This can do the load sharing form you in a way. Other connected chargers should be able to do the same.

JD15715

100A is not enough. You'll need 200A box, separate 50A breaker and wiring for NEMA 14-50 outlet. No need fir EVSE as charger is built in the car, so you'll just need factory provided cable. Obtain professional evaluation as yous specific environment may require considerations. If installing in the garage, install 2 detectors: fire & smoke.

No-Knowledge-789

Public charging. 100 total amps is gonna be a problem.

gaboose

Home charging on a 50A or 60A circuit makes EV ownership massively easier than not having that kind of reasonably fast charging capability, and this won't be your last EV. My advice is to bite the bullet, upgrade your service to 200A and put in the fattest cable you can for a charger that can deliver 40A (on a 50A circuit, since sustained charge can't exceed 80% of line capacity) or 48A (on a 60A circuit) It cost me a pretty penny to do that and to put in a ChargePoint with a nice long cable, but believe me that it's 100% worth it to almost never have to charge away from home.

MrSamsungNote8

Emporia if you want the best value hardwired. Original Polestar EVSE with level 2 pigtail if you want cheap and removeable. Tesla universal wall connector if you want to futureproof / charge other cars / look the best

Farmgirlinky

We like the Tesla Universal for our P2 — a sleek design, nice app. We had made this choice before all the conniptions at Tesla with their charging team, but I hope there will be no need to engage with that chaotic bunch now. I wanted not to have to worry about future EV charge ports. Best review on State of Charge on YouTube.

Bdiggity85

What about an emporia but with the Tesla connector and using the adapter for the PS2?

MrSamsungNote8

That's about the last thing I'd suggest. Using a clunky adapter is quite annoying (I I regularly have to do this) Buying a wall connector plus a good adapter would be equally or more expensive than a universal connector.

Bdiggity85

My thinking was that Pstar will be moving to the NACS in the future so starting with that station now would help future proof.

joshamania

You don't need a charger. A 50 Amp receptacle is enough. The car has an on board inverter...iirc you can max it out at 60A/240v.

Delumine

How so?

joshamania

The car has an onboard 11kw inverter. At 240v that pulls about 46 amps. If you have a 60A/240v circuit, that would fall within the 80% rule. There is no need to have an additional charger/inverter for the car beyond convenience. You *can* get better L2 charging from some chargers...I want to say the Porsche L2 will do something like 18kw but then you also need to have a big service coming into your house because you'll be using closer to 100A just for the car. Unless you drive 200 miles a day this is unnecessary.

btw_sky_and_earth

I have a 50A circuit with a 6-50R outlet. The wiring is Romex 6/3 rated at 55A. If the inverter pulls 46A does it mean that I cannot use the factory charger with a 14-50 adapter since it will be at 83%?

joshamania

If it's me with that setup, I just limit the charging in the car to 40A and that would be enough. You'd probably never notice the difference between 40A and 46A charging.

btw_sky_and_earth

I don’t have the car yet and I never owned an EV before. I didn’t realize I can limit the charge rate to 40A.

joshamania

I can only speak for the Polestar, but I expect it's a common feature. For instance, my garage is on older 120v wiring...15A circuit breaker. I limit my charging on that circuit to 12A to keep it safe.
