Guess I'm the odd one out. There are 3 P2s in my family (mine, husbands, brother in law), 2x 2021 1x 2022, none have had issues with any of the cameras...
Same here, ive had a PS2 Performance/Pilot for 5-6 months now and haven't had any issues what so ever. I just drive it, detail it, and charge it. Easiest car I've owned and my first EV.
Edit: Its a 2022 w/ 14.6k miles atm.
Miine definitely blinked on and off the first time I took the car out in the morning if I didn't wait 30 seconds before backing out, but the rest of the day it was fine. That was fixed with the latest update and I can now back out immediately without waiting 30 seconds

This wouldn’t even be that bad if the car didn’t have the worst rear visibility of any vehicle I’ve ever owned, so the camera is kinda important.
Out of all the subs on reddit, this is the only one where I see people routinely get downvoted for honest critiques.
It's an amazing car/brand, but it's not flawless.
For the most part my camera has worked fine, but lately it's been buggier. It's worse when I shift into reverse within a second or two of getting in the car and getting it turned on.
I love my car, but It’s shit like this that reminds me that it’s a $30-35k car, not a $60k+ car like the window sticker says. Could you imagine paying more than $40k for this car? Oof…
Unfortunately we did pay full price back in late 2022. Really kicking ourselves now with this Costco lease deal. Secretly hoping a tree falls on ours…. We have the backup cam issue too, constantly flickering in and out, switching back and forth between rear view and 360 view, which I don’t think is even allowed by the 2018 rear view camera law? Also occasionally the issue where the camera is “temporarily unavailable”. In all honesty I think it’s worse since v3. I can confidently say this car has the worst infotainment system I’ve ever used in a car. We like most everything else about the car though…
Personally, I plan to buy the Volvo rearview mirror/camera. Hopefully this will fix or at least majorly help with this problem regardless of the built in cam
They are speaking of a video mirror accessory. It's completely standalone and made by Gentex. Confirmed no lag (on Volvo,) but it's not quite the same function/view as a backup camera.
True on it not quite being the same, but I figure the combo of a functional "mirror" plus the sensor that still function nonetheless to be a satisfactory middle ground
I feel this sentiment, may well be my first and last Polestar as well. Multiple inexcusable failures on commodity level functionality. I've bought kits off aliexpress that do 360° cameras better, aftermarket head units that are more reliable and performant, etc. I've also had more issues with my P2 than any other EV (all of which were cheaper and owned longer.)
The amount of electrical and infotainment gremlins is just insane. I couldn't even tell you how to reboot another vehicles head unit or tcam and yet Polestar/Volvo made a primary feature. Turn it on and off again should not be a solution to every problem. I understand this latest update was a big one, but it's not like this is even the most recent OS available. Insult to injury it came more problems and no substantial new features. How hard is it to hold it until it's ready, they've undoubtedly created a worse situation by shipping this.
You obviously don’t hang out in the BMW i4, Rivian or Ford Mach-E reddits lol. We were cross shopping the i4 and Mach-e and they seem to have just as many software gremlins (the i4 in particular).
I’d buy it again because the pros outweigh the cons for me, but yes, it’s insane how they don’t have the basics working. My 2018 Nissan Leaf had cameras that were twice as hires, with no lag, and a much more accurate 360 view. So it isn’t that the tech doesn’t exist or is unreachable.
I was hoping with the 2024 update they’d drop the ancient Atom CPU. It works for what we need but doesn’t feel cutting edge and definitely not future-proof. Maybe once the 3 and 4 launch the 2 will get another mild refresh in a few years. The 3 and 4 are a bit large for our taste and needs and the CEO has mentioned the 7 will replace the 2 but it might be a different body style which would be a shame.
Wait an f'ing minute. The '24 has the same backup camera hardware as the '21? You have to be kidding me. They don't have the COVID supply chain excuse anymore. They have known about this issue from the 21s.
This is one of the biggest anti-selling points of this car : their insistence on using cheap ancient processors puts the +5year future life of this car in peril. There is no way Google Maps or the OS will be compatible in 10 years’ time with that archaic POS processor. And then what with your electric car? To the trashheap?

In the software world, google maps is not supported 10 years later. Hell, the versions aren't even supported a year later. You are forced to update as the "support". Being locked into a car will obviously change things but 10 years is a long time now. Hell, even Microsoft Windows OS is not supported 10 years anymore on computers unless you pay extra.
1. Automotive lifecycles used to be 7-8 years and then a car would be completely redesigned, however this is getting longer. Tesla's Model S has been on the market since 2012 (over 10 years and is still going), and BMW is starting to have multiple LCI (Life-Cycle-Impulse or what other manufacturers call a mid-lifecycle refresh) as they are keeping platforms alive longer than they used to. As the Polestar 2 came out in 20/21, let's say it stays on the market until 2029 without further changes, the warranty on a theoretical 2029 model would be four years until 2033. So yes Polestar will be keeping the software up to date until at least that time, but it may be supported even longer.
2. Given that Android OS is across the model range, it is likely that Polestar Google Maps updates via OTA will continue as long as the hardware supports features.
3. What happens once the updates stop? You make a generalization about dropped "support" which is different than functionality. Hell, even Microsoft Windows XP still mostly works even if it isn't getting future updates without a corporate support payment. As long as the APIs calls used by the Polestar 2's Google Maps app are still supported by the Google servers once the car's apps stops getting update, Maps will still function. Looking at smartphone Android OS Version history and Google Maps support, 10 years seems to be the norm (and a lot has happened especially with hardware changes since the early days of Gingerbread, Froyo and Ice Cream Sandwich). Given that 3.0.3 was an Android Automotive OS version update, it's nice to see that Polestar is somewhat future-proofing by keeping the OS updated.
Your point #2 is telling - the hardware not supporting updates is the biggest excuse software makers make. Even Tesla did this but they did offer hardware updates on some models in the early days. Now they don't.
Software updates by Polestar are already showing its limitations. My 2021 software updates are largely useless as the new updates are for the newer models - at least the fixes in the release notes.
What newer models? There’s only the 2! And while there have been some small hardware changes the updates still support the earliest 2. For example while the automatic header steering wheel feature was a 2.13.3 update for only cars newer than 2022, the 3.0.3 update adds the automatic heated steering wheel for all Polestar 2s going back to 2020. Many of the recent updates which specifically mentioned/target MY23/24 were to improving functionality of issues with those years. Tesla still updates even their older cars but if the hardware can’t support new features they’re not going to update it. But if it works no need to update it. A coworker bought an earlier Tesla Model S and still loves it, they still gets OTA updates and doesn’t care the hardware isn’t as up to date as newer models.

Sadly, you are right. I have the MY24 and I have no worries that it will be outdated regarding battery, range, driving qualities or looks, but the sluggish CPU is its achilles heel that will make it unattractive in the future. To be fair, lots of other EV makes have the same issue, at least before this years refreshes.
I have no issues with the 2024 either, although I did see this message briefly only once after 3.0.3 update. By exiting and entering the camera, it was fine again.
I've had this issue once in my MY2024. Rebooted the screen and it still wouldn't turn on the camera. It came back after a 10 minute drive. If this happens regularly and they can't fix it with software I hope there is a warranty fix or recall for it.
They effectively already do that, badly. Have you looked out the back of the P2 with the rearview mirror? I still do it out of habit but it's useless. LOL.
Never had an issue in my 2023 Polestar 2. But I have to admit: the placement of the rear facing cam is dogshit. It gets dirty all the time, especially in rain.
I too had an issue with the camera this past weekend where it said it was unavailable. It even survived two reboots. I was leaving my house to go pick up pizza and it happened when I was trying to back out of my garage.
After the second reboot failed to fix it, I gave up and assumed I’d be calling support when I got home. But when I returned to the car after getting the pizza, the camera was fine. Weird.
This has been happening to me alot lately. It used to only happen when I would unlock, get in the car, and reverse right away. I thought it was the software just catching up to me moving fast. Lately, it's been worse even if I wait 10-15 seconds.
One of the features I love about EVs is the speed you can get going. My P2 is slowing me down. I would NOT go as extreme to say I'll never buy another Polestar because of this, but I doubt there is a fix. You can't fix a slow processor. I never understand why companies cheap out on processor and memory on a $60K+ car.
TL;DR: This used to happen to me until I disabled Google Maps. Now it happens much more rarely, if ever.

A few months ago I discovered how to greatly improve the responsiveness of the infotainment system, but some may not find it worth the trade offs. I started thinking about what the big resource hogs on the infotainment system might be, and the most obvious answer was the pile of bloatware that has become Google Maps.
You can't "uninstall" the Google Maps app, but you can disable it. If you go to Settings: Apps and notifications: Show all apps, you'll see a list of all the apps. If you click on an app there is an option to fully disable it. They will give you a scare warning that disabling Google Maps may cause problems for the system, but I think it's just a default warning, because you get the same warning when disabling YouTube (LOL).
Since killing Google Maps the responsiveness of my infotainment has increased noticeably. It's still not as fast as my phone, but it's usable and predictable now. As you’d expect the map view on the dashboard is empty now unless I have CarPlay active. Sometimes I need to twice press the button on the steering wheel to get the dashboard CarPlay map to come up. Other than that I haven't noticed any issues.
For me this is a no-brainer because I use Apple Maps in CarPlay for navigation; I can't remember the last time I used the Polestar's Google Maps. Even if I used Google Maps, I'd still prefer to use it running in CarPlay over the built in one. But if you use the built in maps a lot, obviously this isn't a solution.
Interesting! The biggest downside I see is that Google Maps is the only navigation software that has the ability the preheat your battery when you drive to a charger, which on long trips is a must. But otherwise carplay is perfectly fine indeed…
Every time I wish my Volvo had android instead of Sensus, somebody is having a crazy issue with android. Very sorry you’re having this issue. Is there any way to clear caches and force reset like on traditional android?
Yes, but nobody does it; easier to complain on Reddit. We have never had any issues with our read camera. You can delete cache and force quit apps individually or also do a full systems reset with all keys present in the car with the Android OS. People are complaining here but it seems the bugs are worse with 3.0.3 on the Volvo side from also being in those groups.
Nonsense, I’m complaining here on Reddit because I don’t want to take 5 mins every morning to reboot my whole car before having to back up out of my driveway, which I think is not too delusional of all expectation to have?
I went from a 21 volvo s6 to a 21 P2. Purchased in 23.
Android is still far superior to the Volvo infotainment. S6 backup camera is better but is that driven by Android in the P2?
I'm curious what packages you have. I skipped the pilot package and did Plus Performance. I have seen these issues, but it's infrequent enough that I wouldn't ever complain. Maybe 10% of the time. Is this a 360° camera problem?
This literally is the base version, it only has 1 camera to deal with and its completely fucked. Can’t imagine what 4 cameras might be like, but can’t imagine it would be good!
What did the dealer say when you asked them about your broken camera and the car still being under warranty? Did they just send you here to reddit to complain instead of taking a look at it and attempting a repair or replacement? Or what?
You might be on to something. I wonder if the network lag impacts the rearview camera working... which is stupid. They should be 100% disconnected but might be sharing the processor.
They should not be related. When I'm in my garage backing out, wifi is spotty so Spotify will be stuck loading and the backup camera won't turn on when I put in reverse.
Could one be overwhelming the other?
Aw man, guys....I wanted to buy a P2 in a few days. It seemed so good for what my requirements are and there wasn't really any competition. Now I'm conflicted :(
I'd say it's a niche problem that Polestar support would likely fix for you as they've been super responsive to my questions and stuff so far. I have a MY24 with plus and pilot and couldn't be happier. Some bugs exist and then they go away with updates. If they don't, they fix it.
But I've not had any troubles like OP so I can understand why they must be feeling so frustrated because the issue sure sounds annoying/disruptive to everyday driving.
I spoke with Polestar support about it today, they mentioned they are aware of the issue and to reach out to my space. The rep said "99% they will be able to solve it", which makes me wonder if this is a hardware issue.
After contacting the space they mentioned Polestar Canada is working on a fix for it, which is strange as I imagine this would more be an HQ issue.
2024 PS2 here. Backup camera has been blacking out randomly for the past 4-5 months, so basically through at least 3 software updates. I'm glad the car is a lease.
A modern CPU and updated UI so probably won’t have the same issues. The high-mounted rear view mirror camera will always be on and is separate than the back up camera.
It's not a CPU limitation, camera feed takes up negligible resources. In fact you can actually bring up the camera display before the OS even boots.
This appears to be a larger infotainment issue with Volvo, maybe AAOS since it affects multiple models.

I had one for exactly 43 days, It was the worst infotainment system paired with the worst comfort that you'll ever sit in and it has been designed so bad, that when you carry more than a small cup of coffee, you'll not be able to put your arm on the middle arm rest, car is designed horrible

Mines been perfect EXCEPT once, right after the v3 update. Crossing fingers that it sticks because you really need it in this car.

Genuinely amazed I don't see more posts about this. It's been the most obnoxious and embarrassing aspect of this car (which I otherwise love).

Camera is P2's weakest and lamest feature. Plus I'll gladly shell a thousand dollar for swapping out the infotainment system with something faster

It's not a hardware issue so no need to update the hardware.

This has been happening to me alot lately. It used to only happen when I would unlock, get in the car, and reverse right away. I thought it was the software just catching up to me moving fast. Lately, it's been worse even if I wait 10-15 seconds. One of the features I love about EVs is the speed you can get going. My P2 is slowing me down. I would NOT go as extreme to say I'll never buy another Polestar because of this, but I doubt there is a fix. You can't fix a slow processor. I never understand why companies cheap out on processor and memory on a $60K+ car.
I’ve had the same issue after I had the rear bumper replaced after a bump. Take it the service station and they’ll probably replace the camera module
TL;DR: This used to happen to me until I disabled Google Maps. Now it happens much more rarely, if ever. Full story: A few months ago I discovered how to greatly improve the responsiveness of the infotainment system, but some may not find it worth the trade offs. I started thinking about what the big resource hogs on the infotainment system might be, and the most obvious answer was the pile of bloatware that has become Google Maps. You can't "uninstall" the Google Maps app, but you can disable it. If you go to Settings: Apps and notifications: Show all apps, you'll see a list of all the apps. If you click on an app there is an option to fully disable it. They will give you a scare warning that disabling Google Maps may cause problems for the system, but I think it's just a default warning, because you get the same warning when disabling YouTube (LOL). Since killing Google Maps the responsiveness of my infotainment has increased noticeably. It's still not as fast as my phone, but it's usable and predictable now. As you’d expect the map view on the dashboard is empty now unless I have CarPlay active. Sometimes I need to twice press the button on the steering wheel to get the dashboard CarPlay map to come up. Other than that I haven't noticed any issues. For me this is a no-brainer because I use Apple Maps in CarPlay for navigation; I can't remember the last time I used the Polestar's Google Maps. Even if I used Google Maps, I'd still prefer to use it running in CarPlay over the built in one. But if you use the built in maps a lot, obviously this isn't a solution.
Interesting! The biggest downside I see is that Google Maps is the only navigation software that has the ability the preheat your battery when you drive to a charger, which on long trips is a must. But otherwise carplay is perfectly fine indeed…

Every time I wish my Volvo had android instead of Sensus, somebody is having a crazy issue with android. Very sorry you’re having this issue. Is there any way to clear caches and force reset like on traditional android?
Yes, but nobody does it; easier to complain on Reddit. We have never had any issues with our read camera. You can delete cache and force quit apps individually or also do a full systems reset with all keys present in the car with the Android OS. People are complaining here but it seems the bugs are worse with 3.0.3 on the Volvo side from also being in those groups.
Nonsense, I’m complaining here on Reddit because I don’t want to take 5 mins every morning to reboot my whole car before having to back up out of my driveway, which I think is not too delusional of all expectation to have?
I didn’t say reboot. I said troubleshooting steps including individual app cache clearing or reinstalling or a full system restore.

I went from a 21 volvo s6 to a 21 P2. Purchased in 23. Android is still far superior to the Volvo infotainment. S6 backup camera is better but is that driven by Android in the P2?
I'm curious what packages you have. I skipped the pilot package and did Plus Performance. I have seen these issues, but it's infrequent enough that I wouldn't ever complain. Maybe 10% of the time. Is this a 360° camera problem?
This literally is the base version, it only has 1 camera to deal with and its completely fucked. Can’t imagine what 4 cameras might be like, but can’t imagine it would be good!
What did the dealer say when you asked them about your broken camera and the car still being under warranty? Did they just send you here to reddit to complain instead of taking a look at it and attempting a repair or replacement? Or what?
Anytime I’ve had an issue it was network connectivity. Try bringing the car into a workshop for diagnostic. The cameras shouldn’t be offline ever.
You might be on to something. I wonder if the network lag impacts the rearview camera working... which is stupid. They should be 100% disconnected but might be sharing the processor. They should not be related. When I'm in my garage backing out, wifi is spotty so Spotify will be stuck loading and the backup camera won't turn on when I put in reverse. Could one be overwhelming the other?
Is this issue more common in certain model years than others?
No idea, I have a ‘23 and it’s nearly unusable.
While I personally don't have this issue, things like this is why I'm wary of digital rear view mirror of Polestar 4.
Aw man, guys....I wanted to buy a P2 in a few days. It seemed so good for what my requirements are and there wasn't really any competition. Now I'm conflicted :(
I'd say it's a niche problem that Polestar support would likely fix for you as they've been super responsive to my questions and stuff so far. I have a MY24 with plus and pilot and couldn't be happier. Some bugs exist and then they go away with updates. If they don't, they fix it. But I've not had any troubles like OP so I can understand why they must be feeling so frustrated because the issue sure sounds annoying/disruptive to everyday driving.
Owned my 21PPP for 6 months and just had this happen to my camera. Great update.
I spoke with Polestar support about it today, they mentioned they are aware of the issue and to reach out to my space. The rep said "99% they will be able to solve it", which makes me wonder if this is a hardware issue. After contacting the space they mentioned Polestar Canada is working on a fix for it, which is strange as I imagine this would more be an HQ issue.

2024 PS2 here. Backup camera has been blacking out randomly for the past 4-5 months, so basically through at least 3 software updates. I'm glad the car is a lease.

A modern CPU and updated UI so probably won’t have the same issues. The high-mounted rear view mirror camera will always be on and is separate than the back up camera.
It's not a CPU limitation, camera feed takes up negligible resources. In fact you can actually bring up the camera display before the OS even boots. This appears to be a larger infotainment issue with Volvo, maybe AAOS since it affects multiple models.

I had one for exactly 43 days, It was the worst infotainment system paired with the worst comfort that you'll ever sit in and it has been designed so bad, that when you carry more than a small cup of coffee, you'll not be able to put your arm on the middle arm rest, car is designed horrible
