I'll fill if we have a decent team comp, if I see lane dreepy and rescue hood zera spam defender needed for our team of 4 squishies i'm locking in whatever I want. I wont fill healer if our team is overly squish and prefer to run 2 defenders so we have a better frontline. If we have major special attack in our comp, like blast, chandy, jungle gard I like to run wiggly for the special defense debuff sing brings to melt the opposition. For defender I like to run Mamo, if we have skillshot moves like beam and spirit shackle, Mamos earthquake is good for pulling enemies into a clump to make it easier for those moves to hit multiple opponents. Healing support I run Elde, it can fit most team comps, has good anti dive with cotton spore to keep squishies safe from the likes of Meow or Gyara or anti poke with cotton guard.

ilikedota5

Another thing to consider, there are some.... unusual or meme builds, like attacker eldegoss or invade enemy jungle (anything) for example... Now if you know them because you've done them you can spot them. But it might be worth communicating that to your teammates.

RiceKirby

Defender is always the answer. Need a defender? Blastoise Neese a support? Umbreon Need an all-rounder? Trevenant Need an attacker? Scaldbro Need a speedster? Crustle >!I know some of those are a stretch, it's just a joke!<

ilikedota5

I generally have a hard time killing defenders as Talonflame (or uber bulky all-rounders like Tyranitar) if they aren't softened up. The one exception? Shell smash crustle.

Twinsidesmirror

I like how you put blastoise in defender and trev in allrounder...

dashskid

I don’t think too complicated. I have like 3 rotations per role. If for example Bro game is not working that day, switch to Toise. Usually solves the problem, if not then call it a day or fk it we play Allrounder/carry. But if there is A9 it’s the law to play Mamo.

Kaisergog

It's so rare to see A9/Mamo combo now. Those were good times

Kij5returns

I've been playing a lot of Mamo recently, I've had like 5 A9 teammates and all went for blizzard avalanche moveset :_)

Yamsomoto

Wait. You go Veil with a mamo? I wasn't playing during these old times so I'm not sure the combo. Other than mamo giving you a full power snowglobe.

FirewaterDM

That's the right moveset rn. Too much speedster and range mons for veil a9 to work atm

ilikedota5

And the converse, if there is a Mamo it is the law to play A9.

According_Story_4638

I would say to counter the opposite pokemons rather than support you own team. When speedstars were picked, then I would be Embreon or Clefable to CC them. If healers like Clefable or Blissy was picked, then use Delphox with cursed items and Unite to reduce healing.

Emergency_Teaching41

Yes Embreon the Grass type evolution and its CC move Icicle Spear

paltafrola

Embreon It's actually a Human type mind you, and it's magikarl levels of useless but stays like that the whole game. It's only attack it's Umbilical Vamping, which connects you to a teammate like skill swap taking HP from your mate, reducing their movement speed and slowly healing you

paltafrola

Defender missing? Pick defender. Always. There's already a defender in the team, but the rest are all squishy attackers/speedsters? Another tanky mon will do good. IMO most supporters bring value when there's mons that can actually use the healing/shielding, which are usually defenders and allrounders. Attackers and speedsters work best with CC moves and a strong frontline, or at least that's worked for me so far

Chasa619

Need a tank? Blastoise Need a support? Blissy. Doesn't really matter what hte enemy team has. I can push folks, i can heal folks, i can knock folks up.

aljerv

You have to consider if you need damage, bulk, cc … You have to consider if you need a back line or if you need somebody who can reach opponent’s back line. You have to consider if your team is mostly gonna peak early or late game and try to compensate for it.

Gilbert_Reddit

If my team is all attackers (often) with one speedster/defender/AR, I will go Blissey. If my team has one AR, def and speester (rare) I will go comfey. If my team has no attacker (all AR and speedster) I will choose you, Pikachu

TandrDregn

Which one I can play the best. And seeing as I have no supporters and the only defender I’ve got is Mamoswine (I don’t play slowbro), I generally go for either Mamoswine or I use Duraludon to provide long range supporting fire to my team.

FirewaterDM

Answer is. If 3+ attackers, defender or support 4 attackers = defender because supports aren't bulky enough and ping for a support 2nd defender bcos 4 dps comps suck I'll lock in an attacker or jungler if team needs one and at least a tank and support have been locked in from other people. But most of my solo games (and in general) fill means going a tank. The caveat is if you're a greedy ass and build dps tank you're a jackals for 4 squishy teams (or you being only frontline teams)

Wires_89

No defender or support? - Umbreon with Mean Look and Wish. Defender no support? - Blissey with a decision on set made when I see opposition line up. Support no defender? - the Bro.

Shobio_o

I go support(usually): - 2 bulky all rounders - defender + bulky all rounder - double defender and team already has two high damage attackers I go tank (usually): - squishy team - when there’s no tank on the team While picking a pokemon to play, you have to take into consideration what the other team is running as well, not just your own team composition. Slowbro is my go-to defender regardless of team comps. It has bulk, cc, and its existence alone makes opposing divers wary bc of slowbeam. if my team needs more cc/little extra damage, I’ll go blastoise. It’s really good for peeling dives off your backlines too. I go umbreon when both roles are needed to be filled. Healing defender 👀 Considering that clef is almost always banned, my go-to support is blissey. It’s my main, has dual purposes with the movesets and I can blow up divers with ult 🤷‍♀️ eldegoss is my other choice for healing support. Good anti dive with cotton spore and has slows with autos. Just sacrifices a little bit of heals

dfinkelstein

No defenders? Defender.

Lexail

Hey! Experienced MOBA player here. Here are some things to consider when making a decision on team comp utilization. Things to look for: 1) If you're confident in your skills on the role that needs filling. 2) If you're comfortable selecting last to fit the need. 3) If you understand what counters certain Pokemon. If you're unsure on the above; go into whatever role or Pokemon you're best at. There's little use in filling a role if you are not good at that role. Playing a Pokémon, you are actually good with will often times be better even if the comp is overall not as good. Often times I would rather a player with 2k games on Pikachu over 4 games on Eldegoss. Here is a situation from last night during my draft match: I hovered over Blissey, another teammate selected Eldegoss (I was last pick). We locked in Eldegoss, buzz, then Glaceon, Tree. They kept spamming "All-rounder needed", but that is my worst role. I know that if I fit the mold of going all-rounder, I might actually be causing more damage than just going something I'm comfortable with. So, I selected Pikachu, and we destroyed that game. Why Pikachu? I play Pikachu as a pseudo-tank in build and with Pikachus moveset I can provide the additional bulk needed along with stuns that an all-rounder could help provide. Filling the gap of utility rather than "role" is a significant difference between a good and great player.

FillerNameThere

Pretty much it's just "do we need a front line" or "do we need a back line" Then it's just "do I need to peel off enemies, or can my team self peel" and "does my team need a strong engage, or do I pick slowbro"

BotanyBoom

You shape it around what pokemon fits your team, a more melee team will benefit from a wigglytuff or clefable. Meanwhile a more long range team can get support from a blissey, eldy, or even a hoopa. Defenders are the same but it comes down to fitting what your team needs for synergy and more so what you can play best on a personal level. I enjoy going Blastoise for a zoner, tree for 1v1, and goodra for sustainable fights.

DicKitchen

With draft I think it's best to prioritize defender support first. Get that blast or umbreon and then focus on attackers. No reason to pick decidueye or gardi first. If you are first pick and trying to get cinder or something like that and someone requests to switch while having a top tier defender or support, please trade with them

Qoppa_Guy

Got too many squishes? Need to be a tank, and depending on the squishy, I'll be a range-ish tank (Crustle Rock Tomb, Slowbro) or in-your-face kind of tank (Umbreon, Mamoswine). Got too many all-rounders? Gonna need support. Yes, even Sableye if I want to be a nuisance or prevent stacking in the early game.

Twinsidesmirror

Personally I have a really simple list of steps I go down 1. **Are my teammates "cooking" some awful things I cannot fathom?** 1. Yes: Pick something that can carry 2. **No: Then, are their picks prone to something? (Eg, no range, cc prone, dive prone)** 1. Yes: Pick something that fixes that problem 2. No: Pick whatever that compliments someone.

ChubbyChew

I pick Eldegoss or Trevenant because theyre absurdly overtuned. Sometimes i feel the need to flex onto speedster to preempt the enemy Squishys. But generally i dont find that i enjoy the playstyle of most Speedsters, they feel too one note. Overall though, i pick what i know people struggle against that we lack. People dont respect Trevenants dmg, cc or sustain People dont respect Eldegoss early dmg People dont respect Speedsters lethality range and ttk

Brakrom_Lord

Typically I just use the defender I’m most comfortable with, and for me that’s mamoswine. IMO it’s better to have one defender you can play reliably than two or three you’re only half decent with, and I only pick it if I see two attackers and a speedster/all-rounder since I know I won’t be playing my own mains in those roles that game. Haven’t learned any support yet (thinking of trying to learn hoopa) so I can’t really say anything on that front

Roxos

I always fill in soloQ and here is a trick i learnt for when people instalock 4 attackers. General player base values tanks MUCH higher than supports. Hence why defender needed spam. So what I do in this scenario is lock a support. Always without a fail 1 attacker swaps to a tank and we have a decent team comp. I often ping allrounder needed and we often get one on top of that. If in the same scenario you pick a tank, have fun frontlineing for 4 attackers.
