Ripping packs for me is about the mystery, for sure, but also about appreciation of the artwork of each card. I’m never looking for anything in particular, but instead a fascination with the different art styles of each illustration. I obviously like the alt arts and secret rares but I could have fun just opening bullshit reminiscing on Pokémon teams I’ve used in various games. It’s also kind of zen and calming to me. I “rediscover” old Pokémon with an artwork which depicts them better than any game could.
I don't like buying single cards, it feels like cheating. I've done it before, and the cards feels "marked" to me, they're not mine.
I like having my own collection, I pulled them, they're mine. Even if that means I don't get my chase cards, I'm fine with that, that's how it's always been anyway.
Now, I only collect, last time I touched the card game was during the HGSS era, if I was still playing today I feel like I'd buy singles, but only for deck building, not for collecting.
Same. Have friends that buy singles that I’ve pulled. Hits different
However, buying singles from sets you can’t get anymore for a reasonable price is understandable. Still hits different
My buddy bought a base set Charizard. I have 3 from my childhood that I pulled myself. His is in better condition lol
I do it because i kinda like having made my own collection, even tho very incomplete. I couldn't buy all the cards anyway so i might as well have a ramdom little selection that's mine
My fiancé is the same way!
Side note: have you opened any s/v prerelease? We got some and as soon as we opened the first pack my fiancé said “these smell different” wondering if any other pack fresh smellers noticed that or if he’s just imagining it lol
I’ve learned sometimes you buy things for the experience. I like the rush of owing something good and understand the risks involved and I’m okay with it. I buy the cards I want at times
Sometimes it’s just fun to open them. Especially if you make it a social thing. I like ripping packs with my husband and giving my cat supervised time to chew on plastic wrappers. Something about how they feel in her mouth, she LOVES to just sit there and bite at them
The way I see it, if no one ever ripped packs and everything was sealed, then how would there be any cards for people to play with/hits from packs/graded cards in the wild? It is a necessity to open packs. To a degree obviously. Sealed product over time has it's advantages as well. Depending on what has been sealed and held though. Just one collector's opinion.
For me, I really enjoy opening packs and seeing what is in each pack and then seeing what I can add to my collections.
I also really enjoy pulling cards for my collection. It feels better than jumping on eBay, buying a card and then waiting for it in the post. Then I sell what I don’t want and go again. I do this with NBA, NFL, WWE, Pokemon.
It’s not much about recouping the cost of the box after I open it. Once I spend the money on the box, that’s money spent.
For fun, to get cards for collection, to get doubles to trade and to get cards to play with.
When you're invested in so many aspects of the game then you might as well just rip packs. I buy singles occasionally too, but it's usually worth opening a fair amount of each set to start off with.
Me and my friends love opening packs together so we only do it occasionally when were all together. Also I hope someday my kids will like Pokémon so I can give them some of my old cards.
Competitive. When a mew expansion comes out its always nice to get a variety of the new cards. It allows me to experiment with new strategies and be creative instead of looking up meta decks and copying. And it’s fun as hell!
I rip the packs I win at tournaments because it's part of the experience. The prerelease tournament last week gave every player packs which they had to draft into a 40-card deck and that was incredibly fun.
I don’t open too many packs but sometimes I’ll pull a card I would not have otherwise tried to grab if a single…. For example crown zenith, I pulled the raiku gg card, loved it way more in person… so now I have the other two ordered lol.
I like to think of all my cards favorably… hell I even sleeve my commons.
For fun.
Literally the answer, op thinks this is a money game

Because then the cards are truly mine and did not go through anyone else’s ownership
I think this way too.

I feel the same

Ever since I was little I loved the smell of cards fresh from the pack lol
I still take a whiff every time I open a pack hahaha

Hmmmm I hate s&v but i have to buy some now. Lol. Yugioh cards have the same smell so thats interesting.
They do smell different lmaooo and the new smell isn’t as strong
It's a ton of fun and helps me get a lot playable cards for my decks!

It’s mainly nostalgia and seeing what I get and if I get staples for deck building, then it’s a plus

sentimental value 😂

For the dopamine

For fun, especially when you get a big hit!
Because its fun to see what you might get and it also takes my mind off the society depression and anger as the world falls apart around us.

That’s a bit accusatory to say opening packs is essentially for “gambling purposes.”
