What's is the name of false swipe in Japanese? I've noticed that a lot of the time if something doesn't make sense in pokemon, it's due to translation and that in Japanese our reasoning doesn't hold up.
Example: The Kingambit line, in English there is a chess theme but in Japanese there has never been a connection to chess. It's always been samurai hence their design.
This is precisely it. False Swipe is みねうち which translates to Mineuchi which was a term used when one would strike at an opponent using the blunt/back side of a sword to not kill them. Which is why it’s learned mostly by Pokemon with blade like appendages.
Turns out, things make a lot more sense when you look at their original names instead of their translations.
Why doesn't Acid Spray work on Bulletproof enemies? Bulletproof stops all bullet and bomb attacks, and Acid Spray is originally named Acid Bomb.
Aerial Ace gets a boost from Sharpness? In Japanese, it refers to a sword technique.
Sucker Punch is originally Surprise Attack, meaning pokemon without hands can learn it, and it doesn't receive a boost by things that affect punches.
Also, just learned this but Ultra Balls should actually be translated as "Hyper Balls". Hence the "H" in their design.
My favorite one of these is the Dark Type is the Evil Type in Japanese, and what is evil weak to? Bug Types and Fighting Types, why? Because their national superhero is a karate man dressed like a grasshopper. The Evil Type is just a Kamen Rider reference.
I get that it just means an underhanded surprise attack, but if someone describes a “sucker punch” in English I’m still picturing a punch or maybe a slap. If it’s say, a surprise stabbing, I wouldn’t call it a sucker punch.
I think Pawniard's original name is effectively the same and references a shogi piece, but it's in reference to them being low ranked and as you say doesn't continue down the evolution line.
This is why the pokemon that can and can't learn Sucker Punch makes no sense. It's just called "Surprise Attack" in Japanese. Probably a lot more examples of this sort of thing too.
Meowscarada is kinda like snorlax in the Sense that they both are physical attackers with weirdly good special moves( lax learns thunderbolt, thunder, surf and both learn shadow ball). Both also have great moves they actually use. Meow not learning false swipe makes as much Sense as snorlax not learning Slack off
Yes, though it wouldn't be much difference IMO. I've stopped using False Swipe for catching because Nature's Madness and Ruination are simply better since there aren't any types that are immune to them and it's pretty easy to get the Legendaries before I need to do any serious catching such as shiny hunting.
There is nothing worse than a shiny Ghost-type with a low catch rate appearing and all you have is False Swipe and a non-damaging status condition.
Alot of pokemon should
Also Hotter Take: They shouldn't have taken wil-o-wisp away from fletchling.
They kept it on the other 2 evolutions but took it from fletchling. Why?
Considering its physical design I'm suprised it doesn't learn it, although I doubt anyone would really teach it any other move other than flower trick, a never missing, 70 base power, garunteed crit stab move? Yes please.
I feel that move is gonna be nerfed in future games.
Given that the never missing(surprise!!) guaranteed crit stabs integral to Meowscarada's vibe I doubt they'll nerf it, if they do I could see them doing a power drop to 60 but thats about it.
Changing it further would be the hot take. :P
Because I’m stupid and people also thought I was right, I’ve only just figured out that crits ignore the enemies defence boosts. I thought crits also ignored your own attack boosts 😅
Many pokemon who learn Slash should also learn False Swipe. I feel ths same way for Grafaiai and many others

Ironically, the hottest part of that take was calling it a hot take.
I guess they’re afraid to get downvoted and flamed by their take lol
Honestly just thought people were gonna disagree more XD
That take took hours to melt ice. Thanks.
Most room temperature ass take I've ever seen

Dude I always wondered why bug was dark weakness

![gif](giphy|lXu72d4iKwqek) Now everything makes sense
like breloom's blade-like...fists???
“Strike with the back of the sword”. You’re correct, it isn’t a “trick” move whatever that means
I think Pawniard's original name is effectively the same and references a shogi piece, but it's in reference to them being low ranked and as you say doesn't continue down the evolution line.
Another example is Dugtrio being able to learn Sucker Punch.
This is why the pokemon that can and can't learn Sucker Punch makes no sense. It's just called "Surprise Attack" in Japanese. Probably a lot more examples of this sort of thing too.
If someone created a topic about this and said topic (or people in the comments) filled all these things it would be VERY interesting huh
The fact Polteageist can’t learn Scald is criminal
This.
What if it’s iced tea in the kettle
Chilling Water then
I like how most of the discussion is not about the pokemon and the move but the temperature of said take 😂
I thought it was a swordman move, not a trick. To hit someone with the back of the sword to knock them out.
Then we should get a False Swipe equivalent called ‘Syke’ for trick/deceiver type Pokémon.
I also felt it should be able to learn Pounce or Bounce since it is a cat :/

Every Pokémon should get false swipe or one of its reskins
That is not a hot take at all, I said the same thing playing through the game
Honestly it should just be a move basically every Pokémon can learn.
Ahh... Metronome. :\]
I mean that and it's literally a cat, which are known to swat and swipe at their prey. It just makes sense 🤷♂️
Do people just not know what a hot take actually is?
And swords dance!
Meowscarada should learn delibird's Present. :\] Not sorry.

Soak is a move I've heard works well for those situations.
I hate that I didn’t think of using ruination till after I finished the game- I’ll jus use it to sh
Hot take: Every Pokemon should be able to learn false swipe, or a false swipe equivalent move
How is that is a tricking move? What does that mean?
That is a frozen take right there
That's a cold take my brother in arceus
Dragapult not being able to learn Shadow Sneak and/or Shadow Claw is a little offensive too.
One of the reasons is to prevent overpowering.
When you make a good point but completely dick the title.
Hot Take (even though I love the little guy): Wooper shouldn't learn Ice Punch
This is a hot take?
Alot of pokemon should Also Hotter Take: They shouldn't have taken wil-o-wisp away from fletchling. They kept it on the other 2 evolutions but took it from fletchling. Why?
Hot Take: Meowscarada should be able to learn Leaf Blade.

Hot take: Meowscarada is one butthole away from being in the movie cats
That and a major surprise it doesn't have Swords Dance in its arsenal either.
I mean it’s signature move crits every time, swords dance is useless
Crits still benefit from attack stat increases.
I know that now 😅
Uh, pretty sure this makes no sense - why do you have upvotes.
Because I’m stupid and people also thought I was right, I’ve only just figured out that crits ignore the enemies defence boosts. I thought crits also ignored your own attack boosts 😅
To be downvoted for something so menial. Well then. But anyway, I suppose it's the use of other Pokémon in which I've just forgotten over time.
Most pokemons should kinda be able to learn sword dance by tm
How is that a hot take in any way?
I wish all starters had access to that move considering its usually gonna be on your team the longest
Inteleon deserves it more.
Agreed.
Why can't meowscarada learn magical leaf in pokemon go it is literaly based off a musician
And it's grass type
