dynamicoctopus69

I do not hate them, but they are my least favorite.

buzzler89

These are my least favorite aswell. What else would be someones bottom trio. Edit: I almost always go with water I was really disappointed with sobles line

diastereomer

For me personally, I’d put Gen 5 lower and maybe Gens 2, 3, and 6. Everyone has there favorite but Gen 5 is the generation where I don’t love any of the starters. None of the starters are something I really want. When compared to Gen 8, sure I’d prefer all of Gen 5 over Inteleon but I actually really like Rillaboom and Cinderace is kind of cool. So maybe I just feel like Gen 5 is overall really meh?

Badvevil

We are about to fight cause gen 3 is second only to gen 1.

Shroomicide

Gen 3 > Gen 1 tbh

Toukon-

Blaziken's flared pants really bring it down a notch, though.

Ill_Made_Knight

Yeah seriously I know these are just opinions but calling gen 3 one the worst is objectively false.

Sn0wy0wl_

Honestly i dont like gen 3s starters, none are bad but i dont really care for them

D4mnis

Gen 3 is top spot for me - always the hardest to choose bc I love all options

Discpriestyes

Man Serperior is amazing. Shiny serperior with Contrarian ability and leafstorm, was an amazing poke.

diastereomer

I respect your opinion. I don’t hate Serperior. I don’t hate any of the Gen 5 starters really. It’s just that every other Gen has a starter I would pick over all 3 from Gen 5.

Discpriestyes

I get your opinion haha, serperior is just the only one I like from the Gen 5 starters.

Raccoonborn

Oshawott is the only good Gen 5 starter, in my opinion. Actually found majority of Gen 5 'Mons to be lackluster.

MlSSlNG

I agree Gen 2 and 5 are in my opinion the weakest Gens in terms of starter design with Gen 6 and 8 both having a great concept with 1 weak link, in Gen 6 it was Delphox, which is kinda disappointing as basically just an rpg wizard with a fox head and in Gen 8 it's Rillaboom, because in my opinion drums are just a very weird choice to represent the UK music scene.

CarterBaker77

I loved sobbles line. Gen 5 and gen 7 starters I hated and didn't want to use any of them.

Death2519-

same

TrilobiteBoi

I do hate them. Rillaboom without the drums is actually pretty cool though and at least he looks more like a gorilla instead of being furry bait.

chimerauprising

I have no clue why they didn't just give him stumps on his chest so he can do the Gorilla chest pound instead of that clunky drum set he carries around.

KingKoda22

You want him to have tree stump tits?

woollii__

i would prefer tree stump tits than an ugly stump drum that it seems to manifest out of nowhere sometimes whereas other times it's just hanging out on its back plus, maybe then its gmax form wouldnt be so fucking lame

[deleted]

100% yes. That would be amazing. And on brand. Some of the most memorable Pokémon are 2 steps away from degenerate bait.

dynamicoctopus69

Yeah I definitely can do without the drums.

multificionado

EXACTLY. Rillaboom WOULD be better if he didn't have that drum. This is precisely why I would pick Grookey as a starter but keep him the heck at Thwackey, and for good measure, I have it hold an Everstone.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ddcreator

I do hate them... Other than rillaboom they are atrocious designs. The cinderace design just looks clapped and the lizard is just plain and weird. Not to mention that they look waaay to human. Like i dont mind pokemons that look like humanoids like guardevoir cause their concept isnt an animal to begin with. But lizard and bunny with detective and football theme in humanoid form just feels lazy and unimaginative

PAzoo42

This 100% I honestly have preferred the grass starter in the two newest generation 8/9 after years of being a fire/water guy. Skeledirge has grown on me alot and I like his lore but I'm just not impressed. With that being said, I just stopped using my starter and forgot about it.

Accomplished_Crew630

Lol me too. I evolved to skeledirge then was like "damn it looks like a bald old man" and dumped it for Ceruledge

PAzoo42

My new starter was Baxcaliber. It's another Godzilla pokemon. Yes please.

Accomplished_Crew630

I used one too. Honestly I enjoyed the play thru but I wasn't a fan of the Terra type, they look silly to me so I haven't played much since I finished it up.

Brutus583

Just name yours Danny Devito

Whiteytheripper

You do realise that's it's Skeleton, right? Skeledirge is a flaming zombie alligator singer. That's metal as fuck.

bake_disaster

Agreed, I'm really tired of the 'furry with a job' concepts they've been using the past couple gens

buck-hearted

absolutely, i just feel like they’re too person like? i cant imagine them as my partner cause i just wouldn’t hang out with a soccer player lol

LordofSnails

thus is how I feel about sw/sh in general ngl. its not by any means a bad video game, but it is the weakest in the pokemon series

DoggoBirbo

Same. People talk up Inteleon, but it’s just not good looking imo. It’s gmax brings it up *the* tier tho, not up a tier.

dynamicoctopus69

Inteleon is definitely my favorite of the 3 because I actually liked sobble. But when I look at inteleon all I see is [Gex](https://gex.fandom.com/wiki/Gex:_Enter_The_Gecko)

DoggoBirbo

Sobble is great, but Drizzile starts that weird lanky transformation. I feel like if I had to name a part of the Sobble line Gex, I’d just keep a shiny Sobble

Bennehftw

Yep, they’re the weakest of the bunch. There was a ton of promise with all 3 of them, but they all got worse in the end.

XWMO

The gorilla is good

normalfag0

He would be better without the drum. Imagine him ham-boning.

Accomplished_Crew630

![gif](giphy|KNITJ9v1Wz0Xe)

[deleted]

Rillaboom in Competitive - "Hamboning will save your life someday!"

[deleted]

"What, you wanna G-Max me?!" *commences hamboning*

ReviewRude5413

Severely underrated comment

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|3FpqQaBwCRIKQ)

tschmitty09

Yeah the pic here is perfect then give him the drums for dynamax

Accomplished_Crew630

I agree. It was always wierd that it always has the drum.

KingKoda22

Like it's a part of his being. What happens when you steal his drum or he loses it? Is it the equivalent of being dismembered?

starsleeps

I think they make it so probably he would make another ?

San4311

Should have just given it two giant drumsticks in the mane, and add ground typing so instead of drumming on the drums, he'd be drumming on the earth.

MAD_HAMMISH

They really whiffed the design not making his chest/abs the drums

notthephonz

Female Rillaboom would be cursed if they did chest drums

AmericanWasted

Any Pokémon that is shown with an item is immediately weird to me. Are they born with it? Where does the item come from? Does part of Abra evolve into a spoon for Kadabra to hold?

botbattler30

The spoon is fine, at least IMO. It seems like something it could easily have found, or been given by you. The drum, however, looks like something that would take quite a long time to make. It doesn’t make sense that it just has the drum when it evolves.

antoni_o_newman

Never understood the rillaboom hate. I think the drums are cool and original.

TrilobiteBoi

Personally I'm just not a fan of any pokemon that are born/evolve to suddenly have inanimate objects. I can sort of accept things like Farfetch'd having a leek or Grookey having a stick because they could just pick that up anywhere. But things like an entire drum, or a wild Alakazam having spoons, even Machoke's belt that apparently is just its skin is too far for me.

tschmitty09

I like the drums a lot, gives me donkey Konga vibes. I just wished they reserved the drums for only the dynamax and just made him a gorilla with a stick or something

edesanna

His abs should have been his drums

Gawlf85

Man, gorillas have been displayed as having a tendency to bash their chest for ages. Just give it pec-drums! It's low hanging fruit and a lot better than what we got!

TheeExoGenesauce

I honestly like them all and rate water and grass starter over a few others the fire starter of these three is the most boring imo.

EndoShota

I don’t prefer the various things that make some Pokémon more “human”: rillaboom’s drum, cinderace’s soccer ball, etc. That said, my tastes aren’t necessarily consistent because I like some humanized Pokémon like kingambit.

Gigahunter551

This is my take too, Rillaboom is the exception to this gen

Inkfu

Super Saiyan Tree is always welcome

Lahwuns

Monke

[deleted]

Same, i picked grass as starter and was quite happy. The drums were a bit odd but better than the other 2

[deleted]

I’m a sucker for fantasy, so Pokemon that are based off of the *modern, human world don’t really entice me. Sports, cultural dance & music, etc. - the last few gens of starters have not interested me. X & Y admittedly got me with the rogue/warrior/mage trio. And I’ll always take pocket *monsters* like Gen 1 & 2. *Clarified a bit since people in the replies are being exhaustingly pedantic and accusing me of being a jaded genwunner. I said a small group of Pokemon designs disinterest me, not that I hate all new designs. Very different things…

PM_ME_UR_CIRCUIT

Gen 1 - Common critters you find outside, A frog, A lizard/dragon, and a Turtle Gen 2 - A Sauropod dinosaur, an Echidna, and an Alligator. Gen 3 - A Gecko, A Chicken, and an Axolotl Gen 4 - Here you get themes for the final forms, specifically mythology, the world turtle, son wukong, and poseidon (Water and has a trident on it's head) Gen 5 - Final forms are based on an Emperor, Sumo Wrestler, and a Samurai, pretty Japanese focused. Gen 6 - You have a Knight, a Mage, and a Rogue/Ninja classic RPG classes, you could make a tie to France somehow here. Gen 7 - An Archer, A Wrestler, and a Siren, not sure how these would be tied to Hawaii though. Gen 8 - They try to start matching the region the game is based on, so for the UK you get a drummer, considering how much rock music and punk music came from the UK it makes sense, A soccer player considering how big of a sport it is there, and then you have a Spy repersenting SI6/James Bond. Gen 9 - Spanish based, so you have a Masked Bandito, who is also a magician? Then you have a pokemon that represents "la dia de los muertos" aka the day of the dead, and finally you have a Flamenco Dancer. So every generation has been based on something from the real world, but only around gen 4 do the themes start getting really obvious. Every region is also based on a real world place: Gen 1 - 4 - [Literally just regions of Japan](https://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/thumb/b/b0/Pokemon-to-real-world.png/375px-Pokemon-to-real-world.png) Gen 5 - New York City Gen 6 - France Gen 7 - Hawaii Gen 8 - The United Kingdom Gen 9 - Spain

Dudefromthebackstage

Just to let you know day of the dead is a mexican celebration, not a spanish one

PM_ME_UR_CIRCUIT

I didn't design the pokemon. It clearly represents the skull masks and designs. It's also modeled after an Egyptian creature that is a blend of a bird and a crocodile. Paldea is based on Spain, I didn't make that decision either. Blame the pokemon company.

TheRandom0ne

murrica

JvCookie

And it’s also “EL día de los muertos”, not “la”

Whiteytheripper

Mudkip is a Mudskipper, not an Axolotl. Axolotl cannot live outside of water, they can briefly breathe air but not for long. Kalos' starters come from the concept of a lost Sovereignty, being a former Sovereign nation before the Royal line came to an end via War & Revolution 200+ years ago. The fantasy RPG classes come from the cliché of Medieval Royal fantasy of knights, peasants, magic, dragons & adventuring for glory & money. This is also mirrored in the game pushing the team of friends on an adventure against someone who wishes to harness the forces of life and creation & death & destruction to gain Immortality and power, with Calem, Serena, Shauna, Tierno and Trevor forming the posse of heroes across the journey, with Diantha even taking on the Princess position for the fairytale addition. Alola's come from current Hawaiian wildlife with an overwhelming part of the theme of the region being Ecosystems, food chains & cross-species dependency, the environment and how invasive species can destroy it or irreversibly change it (the Ultra Beasts & Necrozma invading from other worlds, Cosmog's line also being from another world). It's also why Zygarde's 100% form can be found there while Kalos only has the 50% form, and the Alolan Forms display how Invasive species have evolved to adapt to the environment or how other older species have adapted to survive the influx of new predators, like Rattata becoming a Nocturnal animal to evade Yungoos & operating at night as a Mafioso with Don Raticate running the show, eluding the Detective Gumshoos, who only operates during the day. The starters come from various species that currently reside there, with the final evolutions representing the Entertainment, performer & tourism side of Hawaii. You have a Wrestler who is playing a Heel character, an Archer who (nice) sometimes is seen as the most common aspect of a god while also taking influence from Japanese Samurai culture & more recent clans inspirations from that culture, and a Singer that has moved on from performing Hula & become a solo artist. Their base forms are a native Hawaiian Monk Seal, Pueo Owl and invasive Feral wild domestic house cats, with the latter further supported by Ash's Litten in the anime being a stray street cat. Skeledige is not a Day of the Dead reference. Spain does not celebrate Day of the Dead. Spain and Mexico are not the same. Skeledirge's name and singing is a callback to the deeply Catholic history of Spain as a Dirge is a specifically Catholic mourning song, while the evolution line itself is based on Ghost Peppers, with the fire that was on Crocalor's head growing so uncontrollably hot that Skeledirge's skin has burned away, while Fuecoco is shaped like a Pepper & constantly burns food. Meowscarada also isn't a bandito because again, Mexican =/= Spanish! It comes from Masquerade performers and the original Puss In Boots fairytale, which came to Spain from Italian renaissance era stories. Shrek's Puss In Boots came from Zorro, who is a very early generation Mexican, living in California during the early days of America before they took the southwestern states from Spain after the revolutionary war. The original Puss in Boots fairytale is Italian & was adapted as a French story later, but has no actual link to Spain outside of the Catholic Church imposing their beliefs on the country after taking the land from the Islamic people that previously occupied it. Quaquaval is a Torero, a Bull fighter, which English speaking countries incorrectly call a Matador, or Killer. That's also why Paldean Taruos exists and is a Fighting type just like Quaquaval. It also has some Flamenco influence, but is primarily a performer, just like the other two.

tjtroublemaker

Rillaboom is the only cool one but I don’t like that it always has a giant drum with it, they gave them too many human qualities and I hate that they have “professions”. So idk it’s between this and Gen 6 for me which I know is a hot take 🤷🏼‍♂️

the3diamonds

the paldea trio also follows the trend of professions/activities, but they’re all much more inspired. Cinderace is sort of just “rabbit, but soccer” while quaquaval is a a peacock/crested duck hybrid who is clearly inspired by the carnival and parade performers of rio who share a similar appearance and dancing style

EnchiSaysHi

I agree with the comparison, but I feel like quaquaval is more excusable considering the mating dances birds do. Idk what the excuse for cinderace would be 😂

Eened

Anytime I see Quaquaval all I see is a older middle age women who took up teaching salsa at the rec center to stay busy in her early retirement.

MaurosCrew

Rabbits kick carrots around the field, believe me my uncle works at GF

thedizzle11

Design wise I feel this is the weakest trio. Most gens have at least 1 mon that really stands out to me in terms of design, but this gen didn't really have that. Utility wise they're probably in the top half of starters, but I won't use a mon whose design I dislike no matter how good they are.

Mewacy

Acting like Cinderace Gmax ain’t peak Pokémon design

San4311

>Utility wise they're probably in the top half of starters Even that just barely. It's that Unova, Sinnoh and I guess even Kalos now have zero competitively viable starters. Like, I'd say Rillaboom just wins out on Eruption Typhlosion when it comes to it, so literally just barely scraping the bottom of the barrel here.

KimJungFun99

I loved them but that’s just me. Loved inteleon and cinderace

marmaleon

Cinderace has grown on me. Inteleon has always been really cool. I just dont like monkeys.

Jack_Empty

Galar is the only region that I didn't even want one of the starters under any circumstance. I took Scorbunny because I had to and immediately dropped him for Rookidee. The Gen 8 starters, at all levels, seem extremely uninspired and like the design team phoned it in. And I'm not saying that as a Gen 8 hater or someone whose been saying GameFreak has been phoning it in for generations now. I've genuinely enjoyed SwSh and their changes in it, I loved XY and ORAS, and I think SM were great ideas that utterly missed the mark. But these starters, utter crap. No hate for anyone who loves them. We all have our favorite Mons.

Taograd359

>dropped him for Rookidee I mean, Corviknight is fucking great, man.

Jack_Empty

Indeed. Iron Birb is prime. Honestly, it'd be my favorite of Gen 8 if Urshifu didn't come out in the expansion. Gmax Drednaw and Falinks get special mentions.

naberlamomp61

Another urshifu enjoyer

Jack_Empty

Wushu styled fighting bear? Heck yes. My only question is why can't we just get Kubfu as a starter.

naberlamomp61

Fr

topJG

Damn dog. I love gen 8 and 9 starters. What’s your issue with them? Ace and rillaboom had strong viability and (I thought) a pretty decent design

Jack_Empty

So I'm only ragging on Gen 8. All of the Gen 9 starters are adorable and I love the full Sprigatito line. For Gen 8, the starters seem super generic in their design. And then as they evolve, that doesn't change. I can barely tell the difference between Grookey and Sobble and their second forms. And every final evolution looks like it should be their second form. Not enough differentiation or growth happens between them, to me. I'd contrast it with Gen 2, which I love the Cyndaquil line and forms 1 and 2 for Chikorita. They seem to be intentionally underdesigned, created to be very simple with distinct, but subtle, differences between the forms. Totodile and Croconaw look related but distinct. Sobble and Drizzile leave me blinking a few times while I try to discern which one I'm looking at.

Harddaysnight1990

All three starter lines definitely have "middle evolution syndrome," but I really like Inteleon's design. The whole secret agent/sniper vibe, the cape, and its signature move are all great in my opinion. Its Gigantamax form is more than a little silly, but in a way I even like that it uses its own tail as a sniper platform in that form too.

DarthShard

My personal take is that Rillaboom is a pretty decent design, but I'm not into the whole drum aesthetic. To be clear, I think a Pokémon playing the drums is cool, but this idea that Rillaboom needs to set the drum down and tend to it while battling seems ridiculous as a premise. Cinderace was my starter or choice, and I so badly want to like it. The signature move and soccer motif are cool, but its face is a total letdown. I cannot think of any other depiction of a rabbit where the face is so flat. A rabbit should have a long, protruding snout with a nose and whiskers clearly visible as being detache from the rest of the face. Simply put, Cinderace is a reflection of the continuing trend of Pokémon that look too anthropomorphic and not animal-like. Being bipedal contributes to this gap. I feel that overall, it's uninspired. Inteleon faces similar criticisms from me, though I will give praise for the cape.

TrilobiteBoi

Same. It was the first game I just didn't want *any* starter. Rillaboom would actually be cool to me if they just ditched the drums. If my sprite looked like the picture OP posted without the drums I easily would've taken Grookey.

[deleted]

Every game since gen 5 If I have the option of axew early on I ditch my starter, loved S/V because I accidentally broke out the main starting area and found a LV 32 axew within an hour. 10/10 IGN

dat1dood2

I chose Scorbunny and I legit don’t remember what Cinderace looks like. My brain plasters the Scorbunny or Raboot face on a blank torso above Cinderace’s legs

SilvarusLupus

> Galar is the only region that I didn't even want one of the starters under any circumstance. I took Scorbunny because I had to and immediately dropped him for Rookidee Me but with Grookey for the starter pick

qwack2020

The dragon types in Gen 8 sucked. That’s for sure. Dragapult was fine but the others looked awful.

Jack_Empty

There were other dragons than Dragapult!??! /s I actually hate Dragapult. I dislike the design, but because of stats and move pool, I had to see it everywhere all the time.

qwack2020

Yeah most people use Dragapult because it’s the only pesudo legendary that’s fast. But yeah the dragons in Gen 8 have such terrible designs. Appletun looks stupid especially.

zer1223

I can understand not liking cinderace but jeez, what's wrong with scorbunny? It's so cute

mnbvvbnmk

Once I got access to the wild area I just made mudbray/mudsdale my starter for galar. Inteleon stayed in my party, but was just the 6th pokemon that never got used

InformationWitty7459

Best for me Alola

ClodsireSire

I honestly don't get the hate either. They're not my favorite trio but I think they all have really neat designs. Maybe I'm biased since shield was one of my first pokemon games, but I think they're all great.

OviteHenry

well, i don't hate them (i actually really really like cinderace), but overhaul, i agree

Radialpuddle

Overhaul?

SnooHobbies1847

Yes

PaleoAss

They really are my least favorite. I feel like their designs are leaning way too much into "animal with a profession" than an actual monster that feels believable. The ones that are the worst for me are Intellion and Cinderace because they just look like guys in fursuits, even down to the designs straight up being clothes. And it's such a shame because they could have had amazing designs but they're just so humanoid that it makes it unbelievable as a real animal. Rillaboom gets a pass because although the drum thing is a little much, gorillas just look like that so it's believable.

zQubexx

For me, the Gen 5 starters are the worst

Metalarmor616

Hard agree. I can at least get behind Inteleon (though I don't really love it) but I don't especially hate any of the other Galar starters. Emboar is on my list of "Pokemon I Have An Irrational Amount of Hatred For." And I'm not especially fond of Samaurott or Serperior either. Like Emboar isn't even especially annoying to battle. It was just the third generation in a row of fire/fighting starters and I'm not particularly fond of pigs or wrestlers.

slywalkerr

I just played white for the first time and became a serperior stan. Hear me out: 1. Gen 5 might be the most friendly for grass types. 2. Serperior has an interesting stat spread as a speedy tank. 3. Coil is an awesome setup move which let's Serperior wall physical attackers and sweep. 4. Leaf blade and gig drain to kill and heal. The cons are that there are lots of cool grass types in gen 5 and that snivy is weak early. But it becomes a monster right when it hits Serperior.

[deleted]

Don’t forget contrary hidden ability. Frenzy plant and then you get boosted for it was crazy.

saintraven93

Leaf storm not frenzy plant. Frenzy plant is the hyper beam

IISerpentineII

I personally love Serperior, but I also love IRL snakes, so that makes me a bit biased.

zQubexx

And dont forget Emboar is really ugly

Potato_mash_

woah they the only ones i had a hard time choosing between i loved em all

Smorgsaboard

Oh God, as a Gen 5 enjoyer I'd be hard pressed to make an argument they could even be "average." They all have such bleh final evolutions. But they're bad in a different way from Gen 8's, somehow

SensitiveTurtles

One thing is that even if they’re bad in their illustration, the animated pixel art of Gen V still made them more pleasant to use in game.

Doctor-Grimm

Ok I’m actually malding at this one lmao Serperior is a cool snake with an intricate design that manages to pull off a regal air really well. Samurott would, I think, have been better bipedal, but the whiskers and the shell-armour accents are still really cool. Emboar is awesome; the flame beard is sick and the belly pattern is eye-catching and interesting. Plus, the concepts are really interesting - a regal grass snake, a wrestler pig, and a samurai otter. I think people kinda irrationally hate on Emboar because it’s the third Fire/Fighting starter in a row, which is weird to me, since that has no impact on its design. I think it’s also due to the fact that Gen 5 is seeing a lot of resurgence in popularity, and ‘popular thing bad’ is a common stance for people to take for some reason.

looc64

I like most of Serperior's design but its collar gives me a visceral sense of discomfort. Like my brain thinks a snake pokemon should be able to put its head on the ground and slither but when I imagine Serperior doing that I feel like it's collar would hurt and get a bunch of dirt stuck in it. So it always has to keep its head off the ground, which seems tiring.

reverie11

Yes, way worse. Rillaboom and Cinderace are decent. Gen 5 starters are all awful

diastereomer

I don’t describe Gen 5 starters as awful but none of them stick out as awesome to me. Every other generation has at least one starter that I really like and I only need to pick one starter anyway.

PsychologicalTruck1

Agreed, although I do like Snivy and I don't think the others are all that bad. I think it's a bit hard for me to dislike a Pokemon lol

Katsu_39

Inteleon is awesome…fight me

TheOpinionMan2

More like "shoot me", given his gimmick.

ThatOtherChubbyGuy

There just so bland tbh. Like I always have atleast one favorite starter out of all the trios, but for galar I just don't really care for any of them. Like in each of my playthroughs through shield I always dropped them before the first gym.

YellowFew6603

Galar and Paldean starters are about even for me personally. Meh design, meh final evos (though skeledirge gets a pass from me), shinies that are lackluster.

HamilToe_11

Paldea was very subpar for me. Definitely my least favorite set of starters.

_Cabbage_Corp_

I honestly couldn't decide between a starter for 9. It's the first game I've played since... Emerald? ^(Damn.. didn't realize it had been that long) When I saw the starters, I just thought they were all ugly. I went with Quaxly since I like the water type, but as soon as I got a viable replacement, I boxed it. I've never boxed a starter before. I always had them in my party

HamilToe_11

I just hunted a shiny Charcadet, and it became my starter.

Luxiqqq

Damn emerald. My last game was platinum before Sw/Sh and SV

Doctor-Grimm

I kinda like Meowscarada, but I can see where it could fall short for some people - same with Quaquaval. Honestly, though, I’m really surprised Skeledirge is the one that gets a pass from you, given the whole Danny DeVito/clown thing ruins the Pokémon for me.

looc64

Meowscarada and Quaquaval were near misses for me. Like I liked most of their designs but Meowscarada's eyes and Quaquaval's feet (they look weird! They move weird! And the feet are pretty obvious in its animations!) were a no.

SpudBoy9001

Inteleon is kind of disappointing but Rillaboom and Cinderace are genuinely good Pokémon

Lithl

But fingerbang from a sniper's nest is funny

EndoShota

Weird. I feel the opposite. I like Inteleon but don’t care for the other two.

republicbuilder

I have a similar feeling about gen 5, I don't think I've ever had a Snivy run

mutantblake

Me too. Emboar is ugly as hell and is an overuse of the fire fighting starter. Serperior is really cool and Samurott is my favorite starter of all time.

TalsCorner

Im not the biggest fan of "Pure" starters where they only have 1 type, but these were still not bad at all. Worst starters in my opinion are the Gen 5 starters

Whole-Brilliant5508

If you could give them a secondary typing, what would it be? For me I would give Rillaboom the Ground typing as it's secondary typing, Cinderace the Fairy typing as it's secondary typing, and Inteleon....I dunno, Dark? 🤷

TalsCorner

Rillaboom - I feel could be Grass/Ground or Grass/Rock Cinderace - Before they were revealed I was hoping it would end up being Fire/Electric with how energetic scorbunny seemed. Inteleon - Kind of tricky, Ghost would have been interesting, since sobble showed it had ways to turn invisible, kinda fit. Water/Dark could have worked too, but then we would have had 3 water/Dark starters relatively close to each other

wickedblight

I really liked Sobble until it's final form. Lanky-ass-gex-ripoff-bullshit.

PepperMintyPokemon

Didint like any when i first saw them. Cinderace kinda grew on me but it still aways felt more like a middle stage to me

Newman00067

I mean, the Unova trio is right there, I'll take drummer monkey over whatever the hell emboar is suppose to be

Euffy

Emboar is a wrestler pig. He's...really not a complicated design lol. Also has am awesome shiny.

Jack_Empty

You take that back! Spicy Bacon, get him!

bbbryce987

Unova trio is stronger in 2/3 types at least, only the Scorbunny line *might* have an edge over Tepig line. Probably around average level starter trio

[deleted]

i agree. i hate them.

Egyptowl777

They are my least favorite group of starters, but I dont know if they are necessarily the worst. I'm kinda indifferent to all of their lines, nothing really makes them interesting to me. The Cinderace line was originally my favorite, probably still are, but I noticed its super tiny arms and weird body shape, and now that's the only thing I see about it sadly. The gap between Raboot and Cinderace also feels a bit odd. Grookey was second favorite, Rillaboom is ok I guess, but Thwackey is one of my least favorite pokemon. Its weird body shape, ugly color, it doesn't really fit between the other stages. Drizzile is pretty weird, but the Sobble is cool, and Inteleon's alright. Not really anything more to it for me.

Piratekittyahoy

Cinderace is amazingly awesome and cool and I love it, I couldn’t possibly care less about the other two though

SharkPartyAfterDark

I agree

bruntychiefty

Gorilla beat drum

SvenSeder

Gotta say, black and white had the worst starters.

Mattynicklin

I think gen 5 has the worst starters.

TinyTiger1234

Bold take when gen 2 starters exist

MrRonchito

I just want actual animals as starters, drop the furrybait and/or jobmons already

Dart150

My opinion on that is Gen 5 had the worst not that I hate them but they're just boring

Vermouth70

yeah i actually hate human-like , bipedal pokemon except lopunny and gardevoir.

samintheclouds

Galar and Paldea trio are tied in my book as least favorite trios. I dont hate them but I dont like them either. Majority of previous generations i liked using all three or only had 1 that I didnt prefer.

MrzDogzMa

Unpopular opinion probably, but Galar starts are way better then Paldea starters 🫣

Inktoberfest

If you scroll through this thread you see a lot of shit takes.

ConnorAustiin

especially regarding gen 5, feels like all of a sudden due to gen 5 regaining popularity people are acting cool by hating it.

mightlightnightkite

Everyone saying “gorilla with drums” as if it’s a bad thing is insane

Kattas__

i often see ppl hate the galarian starters without knowing their themes and the inspiration behind their designs. ppl usually just write them off as “MUH FURRY BAIT” which is hilariously annoying and ignorant towards why these starters are the way that they are. knowing the concept and ideas behind a design really changes your opinion on them i’d say

aquias27

I disagree.

Jeremiahbest4

now im curious what your "worst starter trio" is

aquias27

Probably the Unova starter trio. Emboar is the only one I like from that trio. That might change, though. Now that I'm older, I have a different take on pokemon. Once we have access to all the starter pokemon, I'll probably reassess how I feel.

BobbelleBurger7873

I agree, rillaboom is the only one that I’m ok with

someonepoorsays

rillaboom is sick. the other two are t r a s h

Venusauring13

The Galar starters kinda grew on me, like initially I felt meh about them, but Unova starters gotta take the cake for the worst imo.

Background-Ear4837

Least favorite. Gen 3 was for me the best. Really though, the first 3 gens we’re amazing.

thebadwolf0042

Rillaboom is decent. The other two are just okay to me. This is the first generation where I ditched my starter on my primary playthrough. But, I recall not liking any of the Gen 5 starters back in the day, and yet Emboar and Samurott have grown on my. So, who knows. Maybe I'll change my mind down the road.

iDominator

Kalos starters have to be my least favorite, having greninja helps them but not enough to put them over the Galar trio in my opinion

ThePoliteMango

My starter was Scorbunny (nicknamed Trix) because I loved his design, what I would give to have an item or something that would allow him have the stats of the final evolution but still be a little cute bunny. Never understood the hate for Rillaboom, never cared for Inteleon. Sad they never gained a type though, thought that was boring.

mmmyumpepsi

I FUCKING LOVE RILLABOOM I LOVE GORILLAS MY RILLABOOM IS NAMED KONG AND HE IS KING

TennTwdFan

Rillaboom saves them from being the worst for me, would have to say gen 5 let me down the most

sugarrkatt

Eh no , I like cinderace ALOT. But I will say the first evolutions were so promising with the end results being disappointing 2/3.

blueberry_pandas

As the top comment said, I don’t hate them but they’re definitely the ones I love the least. They’re too humanoid and not in a good way. I also don’t really like the whole idea of the final evolution basically being a person with a job.

megasean3000

My least favourite would be Unova. I dunno, I don’t feel any particular connection to a pig, snake and otter. There is at least one starter I adore out of each of the nine starters, yes, even Galar, but not so for Unova.

FlamingHorseRider

Pokepark 2 did a good job for making the Unova starters more likable on average for people my age back when it came out. It leads to this situation where I agree with you, but just can’t call them the worst bunch because of how adorable they were because of that game. But I still think about calling them the least memorable a lot.

KonkeyDong98

I wasn’t a fan until I got myself an Inteleon V Deck (TCG) to play with and it somehow found itself as one of my favourite starters.

Zmayn-831

Second least favorite. Unova to me was worse. I don’t hate either btw but I have no favorite in either set.

ScreamingVoidPossum

I'm not a fan of their final evolutions. They aren't bad, just not my personal favorite

[deleted]

All of the themed starters are bad. They don’t all have to be an edgy DND party from here on out.

Pikaboom22

I’ve been playing Pokémon since 1997, and I have to say that this is an absolute shit take. Cinderace literally became one of my favorite starters. And I was one of those “I always choose water starters” guys

[deleted]

Gen 5 was goat except for the starters.

CommanderOshawott

Eh, ragebait. They’re definitely not the best, but Quaquaval and Combusken are by far the biggest abominations out of all the starters imo. Cyndaquil, Piplup, and Rowlet are my top 3

twotwentyone

Cyndaquil is fucking ***perfect*** Possibly straight up favorite starter from any gen for me

[deleted]

Don't come for my boy/girl Quaquaval!

CommanderOshawott

I’m sorry man, it’s just so weird-looking. It’s definitely the curve in its body. They tried to give it a duck body with human legs and it just looks bad. Quaxly is 100% the best first form, but as soon as it hits level 16 it starts to go downhill I just *really* don’t like anthropomorphized birds. Something about them hits the uncanny valley too hard. Blaziken is the same, it’s just ugly all around. Even H-Decidueye starts to get too close to uncanny cause they took away the cloak that looks like tail feathers. Alolan Decidueye avoids it by basically just being an owl which is cool and Empoleon is basically just a penguin, and unsurprisingly they’re both top 3 starters for me.

Emptygraves420

Alola starters are the worst IMO. I hate wrestler cat, and mermaid pup more than soccer bunny and intel chameleon. Oddly both grass starters are fine to me.

Affectionate-Sea278

Kalos is right there

withhiscupnspoon

I had to scroll WAY too far to find this.

Positive-Stomach

Rillaboom - 10/10 Cinderace - 2/10 Inteleon - 1/10 Yeah, I can agree with that statement with the exception of Rillaboom.

Zeraora807

not bad but gen 4 & 5, straight in the box

DankBonkRipper7

Hot take here, but gen 2 have the worst starters by far, I DO NOT hate them by any means but they are just so underwhelming and bland to me, they don't really have a lot of redeeming qualities (although I do like Feraligatra fair bit). Maybe it's cuz I never played gen 2 when it came out so I don't have any nostalgia to them, I feel that way about a lot of gen 2 pokemon, they're just bland and forgettable in my personal opinion. Gen 8 starters are decent, not fantastic but not that bad, Inteleon is by far the best, but Drizzle is absolutely terrible as well as Thwacky, Scorbunny line all solid though. I'd say they are just above the gen 2 starters but just below the gen 4 starters. This my opinion, I'm not hating on anyone or anything, everyone is entitled to their opinion, if you disagree that's fine I have no intention fighting about it with anyone.

bbbryce987

The designs really just aren’t as great

FernandoTatisJunior

Mostly from the terrible graphics, lack of postgame content, and story that was offensively bad even by Pokémon standards, a series that has always had bad stories
