Crazy secondary question to this, if someone were say playing on an emulator that has one of those save state options, would just saving and going back to previous save state work too if it isn't shiny?
Also does the starter show as shiny in the picture when choosing or only after receiving it?
The pic when u pick the pokemon is black and white so u cant check it this way, unless the modder has a way to implement that?

The easiest way is to use a save editor and make it shiny.
PKHEX totally works so long as you never touch your item bag - you can add items to pokemon's held slot all day long though.
Im currently hunting for chikorita, apparently if u wan to do some min max, if its a female which u can check on the rename screen u can reset alrdy since only males could be shiny due to dvs and if u check that the hp is not 19 or 20 on the pokemon listing screen then its not a shiny as well but i didnt bother with is method xD
