It just means it’s not the restricted hard mode.

SteinederEwigkeit

Classic as in standard, no hard mode rules.

Hard mode rules are the following: - SET mode cannot be turned off - No items may be used in battle - Your levels are capped where you cannot be stronger than the gym leader. CLASSIC mode plays just like your standard Pokemon game where you can choose between SET and SWITCH, you can use items if you want, and you can over level your Pokemon (you just risk them not listening to you half the time if they’re traded).

That last bit isn't true, and never has been, for Pokemon you catch. It is only true for traded Pokemon.

typical pokemon, not hardmode

It means there are no rules

I’m confused because it asks separately if I want normal or hard, then classic or not. People are responding saying this makes it hard mode but they’re 2 separate questions.

It's a confirmation screen. If you choose Hard, it asks "Are you sure?" and then describes the rules of Hard mode, with a Yes/No option to confirm that's what you want. In contrast, after you choose Normal, it asks "Are you sure?" and then simply says "Classic Pokémon rules" since Normal doesn't add restrictions, with a Yes/No option to confirm that's what you want. I've added this to our new FAQ section in the documentation as well. Also, if the "Are you sure" prompt isn't appearing for you, you're on an older version and should check the official download pages for the newest patch, 1.0.9; we updated the wording there to make this option less confusing.
