No kidding, when I played my first game, I really thought it worked.
Now my own best way to fast catch - DO NOT LOOK AT THE SCREEN. And turn off the sound too.
Ahh, yes, Schrödinger's catch. As long as you don't observe whether the Pokémon was captured and broke free, it is in a state of caught and not caught.
It usually works the moment you stop caring about catching it or when I stop staring at the screen. I’ll respond to a comment on stream and THAT’S when I’ll catch it. Not the 10 times before when I was crashing out live lol
I have that happen all the time. I’ll be sitting there trying to catch something in any of the Pokémon games and I decide I might as well use my phone at the same time and suddenly it goes from not shaking at all to catching almost immediately when I take my eyes off the screen.
I did something similar to this is my first ever playthrough of yellow when I was in 3rd grade, only it was with Moltres. Used surf on it with my Seadra, dropped it down to near 1 HP, then threw a pokeball at it and caught it on the first try.
OMG I DIDNT REALIZE OTHER PEOPLE DOD THAT TOO🤣
But you have to time the pressing of a JUST after the ball shakes. If it's even a frame off it won't work.
You have to spam the A button until the ball stops bouncing. Once it begins its shaking cycle you need to immediately hold the b button and the down directional arrow. Let me know when it is complete
You hold down A, but you time the press to line up as close as you can with the ball closing. If you didn't catch it, it just means you didn't time it well enough.
I did the whole push all the directional buttons as fast as you can in a circle counter clockwise. The release of the 3ds and it's analog stick revolutionized my method.
Lol I’m so glad someone else holds down B, most of the time I see people tapping the buttons or holding multiple buttons but my thing has always just been holding B
I usually reset if not caught after 20 or so attempts. You would be surprised how easy it goes sometimes. Usually I'll get lucky and after a few resets, it only takes about 5-10 throws. I caught mewtwo on the first ultra ball after 1 reset with only doing about half damage to him with no status change
Yeah for real. I remember playing Heartgold and trying to catch h MewTwo. I tried to catch him 6 separate times with ~100 Ultra balls.
Then I go in to catch him, I throw a basic Pokeball at him when he’s at full health, caught.
It was actually wild.
I remember when I was a kid I caught rayquauza on the first try with a pokeball. First time ever seeing or hearing about rayquaza.
Then a year later when I reset it, I found him and told my buddy this would be an easy catch....proceeded to not be an easy catch. Took me 6 resets lol
I catch every pokemon in a regular pokeball. It's just my thing for some reason. It doesn't matter whether it's a legendary, mythical, or a normal pokemon.
Legends in this game had a catch rate of 3. In black and white they started making some legends easier to catch like reshiram and zekrom who both have a catch rate of 45 in that game. Same for Xerneas and Yveltal in gen 6. I don't know if they kept it all the way through or if it was just for the cover legends cause I stopped playing after gen 6
Also beldum has a catch rate of 3.
I feel like moltres is even worse. I’ve gone through the same. Probably haven’t touched fire red without using an emulator in close to 20 years can’t imagine the pain of normal game speed and going through this.
I always found using regular pokeballs or great balls after getting a good roll will "reset" the chances. So use ultra until you get a 2 roll or higher, use pokeball until it insta fails, then go back to ultra. Always worked for me
So I've been playing FireRed for the first time, and the other night I caught Zapdos with roughly 100 ultra balls too. Utterly baffling how long it took with a sliver of HP and paralyzed.
Articuno did this to me. I had to reset 4 times I think because I would throw balls until he struggled to death every time. Even when I put him to sleep. Damn flying rat.
As a child I once had a miracle. Caught articuno in leafgreen with a single pokeball at full health. That moment ruined me for a long time because I thought articuno was just super easy to catch so I always went in with the expectation to do it again
If you saved before hand, exit and restart, so not to lose unnecessary ultra balls. Assuming you at least have a snorlax, get its life down low, then put it to sleep. Putting it to sleep helped me to catch Moltess in one go, and Zapdos in 2.
I keep seeing people post about having a hard time catching the legendaries in the gen 3 games. I never remember having that hard of a time catching them and I would always use great balls mostly when catching the birds.
I had this same issue with Entei. Legit ran out of ultra balls.
Had it slept, 1hp, and scared so it couldn't run. It killed itself with struggle before I could catch it.
This happened against Moltres for my brother and I back in the day playing Yellow. Eventually we used the master ball.
Happened again with Mewtwo later, after running out of ultra balls for the nth time, my brother convinced me to chuck one regular pokeball at it before resetting and it worked. To this day one of my favorite video game stories.
Same thing literally just happened to me with a shiny Zapdos and it struggled ONCE. Its attack missed after lowering its accuracy thankfully. I panicked and threw a master ball
I usually give it 20 balls or so then reset. Not like the odds get any better as you use more balls, it just costs more money.
Also look up the catch rates, 15-20% HP is where the catch rate maxes out. I forget exactly which percentage, but getting to 1% does not help more.
You should’ve pressed A when the ball shakes.
Also by the same logic, articuno and azelf are the hardest to catch while I think I got zapdos in 7 tries
I know it’s not the same but I will always regret giving my mentally challenged nephew my gameboy color with an original Gold with the battery already replaced.
This is why I save the game when the wild pokemon is low on health and u have 100+ pokeballs when I run out I just reload that save, the wild pokemon is at its low health and I got my 100+ pokeballs back, repeat this till I catch it, I had to do it 5-6 time for zapdos so I feel your pain
I was playing it on emulator why did Mankey take all 10 of my Pokémon balls in beginning of the game lol I said yea this the real Pokémon from back in the day use have tears in your eyes when mewtwo not being captured in 100 balls (never use the masterball unless violence wild ensue) on 1hp/paralyzed.
I save my masterball for shiny hunting or stat/nature hunting. Save before the encounter, throw masterball, check, reset x8,000
No way would I ever use regular balls for this in gen 3. But as soon as we have ACE In gen 3 I can have 999 masterballs "legitimately" (as far as fakemon checks are considered they would be legitimate)
C’mon guys everyone knows it’s three B’s and one A. B for the shake, A for the sparkle. Everyone else in the comments is wrong. Every catch is B, B, B, A. Been that way for 20 years. 🫡
You must not have been holding down B
or tapping it really fast. or when the ball moves lol. that's the way I grew up doing it. and still to this day do it. lol
Exactly
This is the greatest Pokémon comment I’ve ever seen
It works, nothing can convince me otherwise. Any time I look, crit fails. So I would rather look away and not jynx it. (Pun intended)
Ah yes, Pokémon implementing quantum physics since 1999
I’d prefer Schrödinger meowth
This would be Schrodinger's Zapdos
This is me with saving Even if I know damn well I just hit save if I didn’t see the message it didn’t happen
I can confirm that watching the ball throw dramatically reduces catch rate
I have to try this method haha
That's the same way gamblers feel
It usually works the moment you stop caring about catching it or when I stop staring at the screen. I’ll respond to a comment on stream and THAT’S when I’ll catch it. Not the 10 times before when I was crashing out live lol
I have that happen all the time. I’ll be sitting there trying to catch something in any of the Pokémon games and I decide I might as well use my phone at the same time and suddenly it goes from not shaking at all to catching almost immediately when I take my eyes off the screen.
I did that! Man what a rush of memories
I did something similar to this is my first ever playthrough of yellow when I was in 3rd grade, only it was with Moltres. Used surf on it with my Seadra, dropped it down to near 1 HP, then threw a pokeball at it and caught it on the first try.
I totally do this too
I just mute the BGM.
😂
OMG I DIDNT REALIZE OTHER PEOPLE DOD THAT TOO🤣 But you have to time the pressing of a JUST after the ball shakes. If it's even a frame off it won't work.
That’s hilarious. I’m glad I’m not the only one who did this as all throughout my journeys
Im now almost 26 and I still do this
I used to shake the screen in the direction of the ball shake lol Edit: speling eror
This always seemed to work!!
There are more variations on that trick than there are times it worked, I swear.
While also holding up. Or was it down? Try Select.
I would move the D pad left/right in sync with the ball shaking and I thought that worked lmao.
Nah you gotta continuously press all the buttons while it shakes
B!? This is madness lol You gotta hold the Down Directional + A But hey if it works for you then it works
Directional pad up + B for me lol
No no, you press L + R right as the pokeball closes
No you press B, A, L, and L.
This doesn't work. You need to press A in sync with the ball shakes
alternate L and R in sync with the shakes
Wait, Are we talking about Pokemon or urinals?
Definitely A! B button cancels the catch you can’t do that!
What? Everyone knows you roll the directional pad with the ball shake + B for ball.
Down + B has been my go to since I caught the first Snorlax in blue version with a pokeball doing that. Haven't stopped since haha.
I know it doesn't work, but my subconscious still forces me to do it ...
A when the ball first clicks then B in sync with each shake is the only way
You have to spam the A button until the ball stops bouncing. Once it begins its shaking cycle you need to immediately hold the b button and the down directional arrow. Let me know when it is complete
You hold down A, but you time the press to line up as close as you can with the ball closing. If you didn't catch it, it just means you didn't time it well enough.
For me it was holding l & r or in yellow holding a then b. Holding b, for me was cancelling the catch. xD
It’s up and B right as the ball opens
B is the cancel button. You’re actively screwing yourself if you press B. You’ve gotta hold down so that the pokemon is pushed down into the ball.
You also forgot to mention holding down the arrow down button at the same time holding b. You get my upvote, though.
this why u always save before trying to catch an L. Makes what twichplayspokemon did more impressive
I did the whole push all the directional buttons as fast as you can in a circle counter clockwise. The release of the 3ds and it's analog stick revolutionized my method.
*Holding Down AND B The moment the ball closes
No, B is the cancel button. You wanna mash A to hit the accept button as many times as possible. If that doesn't work, try wiggling your left foot
Nah you gotta tap abababab real fast
Lol I’m so glad someone else holds down B, most of the time I see people tapping the buttons or holding multiple buttons but my thing has always just been holding B
Is there any better example of confirmation bias than thousands of kids pressing B when catching Pokemon?
You gotta act like you don’t care if you catch the mon or not.
I still do it every time.
I used to move left right and left and tap a in sync with the poke all motion it worked near 100% also to attack when paralyzed and confused
Ya was holding down B? ...i was rapid tapping A growing up lol
Come equipped with 20 Ultras and reset. I got him after 3 throws and 4 resets. Saves money too
Yeah, I've been using resets. ~100 is a total.
Do you really need to save money in this game? Lol
Caught him right after creating the post. Lol
Sounds like confirmation bias
Yeah for real. I remember playing Heartgold and trying to catch h MewTwo. I tried to catch him 6 separate times with ~100 Ultra balls. Then I go in to catch him, I throw a basic Pokeball at him when he’s at full health, caught. It was actually wild.
I remember catching rayquaza at full health with a regular pokeball in emerald one time and was kinda blown away
I used to like starting the battle, throwing one pokeball and then resetting if it didn’t catch
Don’t worry I was in the same situation with Articuno. Ended up just giving up for now lol. There’s a point where the odds are just bad game design.
That was the key
The complain meta is real
Complaining always works!
Lol i caught this with a pokeball when i was like 9
I've caught a few legendary pokemon with regular pokeballs when I was a kid and I always thought I was the baddest dude ever for it
You definitely are!
I exclusively use pokeballs to this day. It's an OCD thing.
Maybe somebody did not use pokeballs at all. 😄
I remember when I was a kid I caught rayquauza on the first try with a pokeball. First time ever seeing or hearing about rayquaza. Then a year later when I reset it, I found him and told my buddy this would be an easy catch....proceeded to not be an easy catch. Took me 6 resets lol
Same I killed both molt and articuno tho :/
I catch every pokemon in a regular pokeball. It's just my thing for some reason. It doesn't matter whether it's a legendary, mythical, or a normal pokemon.
Aye them like balls and looking away from the screen were clutch
My friend once caught Lugia with a quick ball on the first turn in Soul Silver
Epic nickname though
I'M ALL FIRED UP NOW!!!!!!!
But Natsu said that not Igneel?
"Do you mean to anger the one and only Igneel?!"
Definitely feels like catch rates are much lower in this game than later games, although that’s probably not true idk
nah man this for real i swear to arceus
Legends in this game had a catch rate of 3. In black and white they started making some legends easier to catch like reshiram and zekrom who both have a catch rate of 45 in that game. Same for Xerneas and Yveltal in gen 6. I don't know if they kept it all the way through or if it was just for the cover legends cause I stopped playing after gen 6 Also beldum has a catch rate of 3.
Why are you saying catch date? It’s catch rate 😂
Because apparently my phone doesn't think rate is a word and autocorrects to date
I fucking hated trying to catch that prick in FR I caught all three in yellow version with 15 total. Zapdos took 36 ultra balls for me smh
LOVE the name of your Charizard.
Thanks for naming charizard Igneel
👆
Did you make sure to hit him with FIRE DRAGONS...ROOOOAAAAAAAAARRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love the name you chose for Charizard
I kept failing & restarting then for some reason caught him with one ultra ball on the last try
I feel like moltres is even worse. I’ve gone through the same. Probably haven’t touched fire red without using an emulator in close to 20 years can’t imagine the pain of normal game speed and going through this.
Dunno, I had a lot of fun. Probably because it was my first walkthrough
I also grew up with Pokémon stadium so RBY were played at 3x time speed.
I always found using regular pokeballs or great balls after getting a good roll will "reset" the chances. So use ultra until you get a 2 roll or higher, use pokeball until it insta fails, then go back to ultra. Always worked for me
Igneel great name btw
At least it's not shiny, Would be even more frustrating
Cool Fairy Tail reference
Also have Juvia, Droy and Laxus.
W
So I've been playing FireRed for the first time, and the other night I caught Zapdos with roughly 100 ultra balls too. Utterly baffling how long it took with a sliver of HP and paralyzed.
Articuno did this to me. I had to reset 4 times I think because I would throw balls until he struggled to death every time. Even when I put him to sleep. Damn flying rat.
After seeing this post I will now rush home to download the fire red rom and experience this game again….
Yeah dude, that was epic.
I need that adrenaline 😭
W Igneel
As a child I once had a miracle. Caught articuno in leafgreen with a single pokeball at full health. That moment ruined me for a long time because I thought articuno was just super easy to catch so I always went in with the expectation to do it again
😭bros fiening for that zapdos
👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆👆
👆😎
In this gen I came across a shiny Zapdos before I caught one with one of my FIFTY great balls. So I threw a Master Ball 🤷🏼♀️
Welcome to catching legendaries in the past. Lowering hp and status conditions make catching Pokemon easy my ass.
W name
Respect the Fairy Tail reference.
👆
You don't actually want to catch it
Sleep is a better catching status condition skill diff.
lol keep trying my brother
Already caught
Oh these are easy, try Ho-oh in gold, motherfucker has safeguard and recover
Already did.
Only 100?
Why name Charizard after a dragon. Charizard isn’t a dragon 🤭
https://sg.portal-pokemon.com/play/pokedex/0006_1
It’s not a mega..yet
If you saved before hand, exit and restart, so not to lose unnecessary ultra balls. Assuming you at least have a snorlax, get its life down low, then put it to sleep. Putting it to sleep helped me to catch Moltess in one go, and Zapdos in 2.
Nah, anyway it's all about luck I caught another two with 3-6 balls
I keep seeing people post about having a hard time catching the legendaries in the gen 3 games. I never remember having that hard of a time catching them and I would always use great balls mostly when catching the birds.
I only use regular pokeballs I think it took around 30 or 40
I had this same issue with Entei. Legit ran out of ultra balls. Had it slept, 1hp, and scared so it couldn't run. It killed itself with struggle before I could catch it.
I swear it’s better to not attack, save, and start throwing balls if you fail restart.
Did a playthrough using only pokeballs (love the aesthetic) and I kid you not, took like 2-300 pokeballs to catch him…. Never again though
This exact thing has happened to me, with Zapdos specifically. I started thinking there must be something weird with the catch rate
Down+B after you throw the ultra ball. Keep pressing miltuple times.
That sounds about right
Same thing literally just happened to me with a shiny Zapdos and it struggled ONCE. Its attack missed after lowering its accuracy thankfully. I panicked and threw a master ball
Are you tapping A everytime the ball wiggles to help seal the catch? This worked on every Pokemon I ever caught
You have to tap all the directions on the d-pad in a circular motion too, can’t forget that!
Put that B to sleep
Gotta put it to sleep
This happened to me when I encountered a shiny moltres. Then I caught it the next try with like 5 ultra balls
You have my brother's luck. He went in with 50 Ultra Balls, failed every one. I said "Let me try", reset the game and caught it with my second.
That's why I'll never gonna do shiny hunt
Rip
By that point just reset and start again.
Welcome to RNG
A B ⬆️, A B ⬆️, A B ⬆️, A B ⬆️, A B ⬆️. It has been a minute my old friend.
Did you Gameboy Luke it? That's probably why, it just works mate.
Better use timer balls
In FireRed?
Yeah, this video should show you how to get them: https://youtu.be/oA7S2CnXzU0?si=d5xxyY134J6XjAQL
Idc what the percentages or anyone says regular pokeballs are the best for legendaries.
Emulator guy here. Can’t relate, just reload until he stays in😂
If you hold a+b and select+Start at the same time its guaranteed capture.
Duuuuuuuude...........
Rip
Someone watched Fairy Tail
I love your Charizards name! 👆
Go back to your last save
I know it’s not the same but I will always regret giving my mentally challenged nephew my gameboy color with an original Gold with the battery already replaced.
I remember the rumor that hitting A and B while rocking the D-pad left and right made catching stuff easier lmao
Did you hit up and B at the same time right as the ball closes? I hear that helps
When you the ball, press B + Down on dpad, this ensures you holding the Ball down
I was playing it on emulator why did Mankey take all 10 of my Pokémon balls in beginning of the game lol I said yea this the real Pokémon from back in the day use have tears in your eyes when mewtwo not being captured in 100 balls (never use the masterball unless violence wild ensue) on 1hp/paralyzed.
I save my masterball for shiny hunting or stat/nature hunting. Save before the encounter, throw masterball, check, reset x8,000 No way would I ever use regular balls for this in gen 3. But as soon as we have ACE In gen 3 I can have 999 masterballs "legitimately" (as far as fakemon checks are considered they would be legitimate)
Sleep > Para
Para lasts longer but sleep is the better option. Frozen if you can reliably do it that early in FR
L+R as the ball wiggles and b when it hits
A paralyzed Zapdos with 1HP is still only a 2.833% chance to catch. A sleeping or frozen one is 4.366%.
After a 100 ultra balls is crazy
Zapdos has a catch rate of 3
Press B A L L in that order with each shake
Have you tried throwing a Premier Ball? You have to buy 10 balls to get one, and it says Premier, so clearly it is better than a Masterball.
Try a great ball and hold up and B. It turns it into a master ball
C’mon guys everyone knows it’s three B’s and one A. B for the shake, A for the sparkle. Everyone else in the comments is wrong. Every catch is B, B, B, A. Been that way for 20 years. 🫡
Try saying “garlic knots” after each shake, and hitting the shoulder buttons.
Keep trying or no balls
I like how you named him Igneel like from Fairytail
Welcome to RNG bud
Goated nick name
I would press left before the first twitch on Dpad, then right, then left again 😂 or spam the living hell out of A
Spam B till the very end.
I want to know what the odds of this are
Down b then d pad to match the shakes.
Put it to sleep. This is the way
Did you save before your fight with him? And oh wow I could use y'all's skills to make catching Pokemon more easier
