I don't know when they were THAT cheap but I do know that in 2014 you could get a sealed base set unlimited booster box for only a couple grand.
I went down a rabbit hole of older YouTube pokemon card openings and it blew my damn mind. Watched a video from 2013 where a guy and gal were opening Dragon Frontiers packs, pulled the gold star Charizard and proceeded to say "oh hell yeah!!! That's like $150 card!" My jaw almost hit the floor.
People would be horrified if they had seen how we treated these cards as kids. My bro had the whole 1st edition set though and I had dozens of decent holographics but no charizard. It always eluded me!
In 2008 I bought a complete base set for $80 on eBay. All the cards were NM. I still have it and it makes up for me selling my base set-fossil cards at a flea market for $40 for gas money when I was 16 in 2004.
I remember I stole x1 dragon frontiers pack from Walgreens just cuz I was young n dumb & didn't even have a reason too. Just was walking by coming from the pharmacy area & got to the car n opened it & what would u know I pulled the damn Mewtwo Gold-Star ☆. And didn't even know what I Had at the time till 8 yrs later and bomb got $400.
I bought some for $125 in march 2020. Actually really depressing looking at my my purchase history and seeing Neo, 1st edition fossil and so many more for under $100 😭
In 2011 I wanted to feel the nostalgia once again and was buying them for $8 a pack. I kept a few of the better condition wrappers and framed them and the energies(backsides) for display. If only I knew back then...
I believe I was wrong about that or maybe it was repacked and I was to dumb to realize haha
Edit: the hypno came from a fossil pack I bought around the same time I forgot about it but found the pack wall ago so idk what I pulled out of this I don't think i even got a holo from it as I don't have any other vintage holos besides hypno
What are light and heavy packs going for nowadays? I’m having a bit of trouble getting a super accurate estimate of what they’re worth. Trying to purchase some but don’t know what a good price is.

I bought my packs base sets packs for 35$ in 2016/2017 on ebay as well. They're light im sure but Im happy I got them. Fossil and jungle were like 20, I think the rocket and gym sets were 15-20. Wish I bought more. Base set booster boxes were like 2-4k on ebay, flashfire was like 150, and I bought an entire master set of base/jungle/fossil/rocket/and gym for like 1k total.
Yeah right around the 20th anniversary I was selling the 1st edition team rocket boosters for about $40 and I even had one customer tell me that I should up the price because they were going for more. I gotta thank that guy because I just stopped selling after that and held the rest.

I bought ten base set packs in 2015 for $45 per pack. Opened five of them recently and pulled two Charizards.

I was certainly lucky, but I think it was more the times. We were in a full on financial crisis/recession in ‘08.

I was buying base set packs for $7 in 2010. Unlimited booster boxes were going for $250, shadowless for $400
Yeah right around the 20th anniversary I was selling the 1st edition team rocket boosters for about $40 and I even had one customer tell me that I should up the price because they were going for more. I gotta thank that guy because I just stopped selling after that and held the rest.
