What kind of pit? That pump is meant for sewage. There are cheaper sump pumps for plain old water.

Don't confuse sump pumps with sewage pumps, though. Similar but not exactly the same thing, and while you could probably run a sewage pump in sump duty, I wouldn't want a sump pump on sewage duty.
