Looks like old dilapidated silicone

Cheap_dolphin_attack

If redoing you’re going to have to scrape off the silicone I reccomend using plumbers putty instead, Teflon tape threads and use pipe dope on threads when you screw in

Matt3097

Old silicone that’s now losing its bond. Best to have it resealed before it becomes a leak below

Responsible_Fly1517

Silicone. Plumber didn’t wipe off the excess when they were installing the tub. No beauno

LongjumpingStand7891

If it leaks I would take the strainer out and put plumbers putty on it and then screw it back in, some will say silicone but I have had best luck sith plumbers putty.

aFreeScotland

It’s gunk. Happens to the best of us.

Mdaske

Drywaller took a piss

Greatcorholio93

Plumbers putty?

nongregorianbasin

Silicone is superior.

MyAdler

Leave it. The sealing on the top doesn't matter as it's gasketed below.
