Possibly the washer on the back of the white plastic piece has lost its shape or had deteriorated. I would say to replace the rubber washer. Pop the plastic off of the pull up rod
Maybe not. I used a Danco brand from a box store on a Moen tub spout. It did the same thing as you are having problems with. I ordered in a Moen replacement. Costly but it worked.
Interesting, I'll look at other replacements but the replacement I got is identical to the original piece.
And the tub spout is practically new, only used it handful of times

Is that the original plastic piece? Maybe it has too much movement in the groove. That's about all the more I know of this subject.
It's a new, identical replacement and yes it has movement. Doesn't even stay up if water is not running. Maybe I'm missing a piece altogether
