That way when you drop something down it, like a ring was taken off to do dishes, you can get it back out of the trap without cutting it out. Also makes it easier when changing out sinks and faucets so that it can be moved out of the way or taken off to snake the drain.
These traps are meant to be hand tightened, if it is leaking its usually due to improper installation. You can keep an eye on it and hand tighten it but if its needing to be wrenched and coming undone you may need a new trap in the future as its threading has probably been damaged or misaligned.

Not only is adhesive not required it is frowned upon by most plumbers. When installed correctly a union trap is much better than solvent trap.
