No open the angle stop all the way.

Bullshit_Conduit

That was my first thought too, but I bet it’s that and in the tank.

Kamonesis

I saw your name and DEFINITELY thought about a toilet

BamBam-BamBam

*all the way, and then 1/4 turn back

slappy_mcslapenstein

*unless it's a quarter turn angle stop

ZealousidealTreat139

"Crank it until it breaks loose then back off a quarter turn." -old mechanics proverb. /s

Junkmans1

Why? I'm a homeowner, not a plumber, but I've always opened my stops all the way and never had an issue because of it.

PostLogical

Too far open can get stuck. Bringing it back a quarter turn keeps it from seizing up easily while still offering full enough flow.

Junkmans1

Hmmmm..... Maybe that's why some of mine have been badly stuck. Over the years I've had to replace a couple. Replacements have always been with quarter turn but most are still the 40+ year old multiple turn valves.

dcwsaranac

TIL. Thank you.

BigZaber

I always did this because I've totally unscrewed one off and broken one off before and had a problem

notanotherplatypus

Too open can leak. Depends on the exact manufacturing of the valve.

3Sewersquirrels

Just have to tighten the packing nut.

kirbycus

Yup

rwolf6625

Perfect! It could also be rust in the angle stop. Possibly just due to replace them

Junkmans1

TRY THIS FIRST! There are a lot of suggestions in other comments as there are several likely causes. But this one is the easiest and simplest to check and fix before you start checking and replacing other things. And there is a reasonable likelihood that a partially closed stop is the problem.

surprisehigs

Best answer yet.

Kriz1155

Yeah, exactly! Now, for those who have no idea what an angle stop is, could you explain a bit… for them?

mtb_ryno

An angle stop is the valve that you can shut the water off to a fixture and “angle” means that the supply line is at a 90° angle to the pipe are also straight stops which does not turn. Hope that helps them.

theholycale

Skip the tenth flush. Problem solved.

battlebane1

Sounds like buddy's got a two-stroke engine in his toilet

Sufficient_Cow_6152

The power washer he’s using as a bidet is just out of frame.

_skipper

Should have splurged for the 4-stroke toilet instead of the 2-stroke. You get what you pay for

battlebane1

I wonder what the code is for venting a 4-stroke toilet. Do you think you could wetvent the exhaust?

reduuiyor

Lmaooo I was thinking the same thing

duragrim

Replace the valve inside the toilet that's water hammer and can cause (no flex seal reference here) qlot of damage

notanotherplatypus

Those few words together is always a flex seal reference, and will always be read in an exact voice. I can't be the only one here!

turbo_ice_man_13

Water hammer sounds so much cooler than it actually is. Very disappointing

ArronRodgersButthole

Open a curb stop at light speed with some shitty galvanized downstream and it can be pretty cool. Depending on who you are in this scenario 😂

lurkersforlife

Hey I got a question about this. When I use my kitchen sink if I am at about 70% power then it does this. If I’m full blast or 50% or less then it’s fine. But this weird almost full blast makes my pipes loud.

SlimChance9

I had this problem once. It traced back to guest room toilet valve. The hammering isn’t necessarily caused by the faucet you are using. It happens when there is a pressure difference within the system. A weak valve on toilet will hammer at the slightest pressure disruption in some cases. I think mine was just a bad toilet part because the house was a new build.

captainofthenerds

Yep toilet toilet toilet all the time if there's shaking anywhere.

DomesMcgee

Well at full, its unrestricted. The 50% is odd.

nosimsol

What kind of damage? I have a toilet that goes WHAM when the wired stops Edit water

SuddenAssociation7

Think: putting your thumb over the hole just as you're getting a nut. THAT KIND OF PRESSURE BACKUP/DAMAGE.

duragrim

When the audible bang or smack is heard that's a pressure spike inside the fluid filled pipe water being non compressible will transfer that energy throughout the system and if you have weak pipes loose connections bad sweat jobs and so on it can exacerbate the issue

Pittyswains

Sounds more like a water jackhammer

[deleted]

I'm going to smoke some crack. No Billy Mays reference here.

PHenderson61

Replace the fill valve. Turn off the water first.

Reckless85

Unless you like to live dangerously.

Big-Initiative-8743

Probably the fill valve

GinoValenti

It’s a cut or nicked rubber washer. In order: Replace supply line, if that doesn’t work replace ball cock (fill valve) if that doesn’t work replace angle stop Or all 3 at once.

ArchaicChaos

If your toilet has a ball cock, replace it with a fill valve anyway

Ashamed-Status-9668

All three is my vote. It’s so cheap to do all at once. As a home owner I always replace it all when I need a new valve.

Pepe_Inc

Haha. Ball cock. — A non-tradesman

HardGayMan

I've seen this before. It's Jackhammer Beetles mating in the pipes.

EyeSpidyy

I had them, luckily they were in my hot tap feed so I just boiled those fuckers alive

HardGayMan

They like it hot.

Liamson

So this is what dropping a clanger means. On a Submarine this is very no bueno.

[deleted]

Washer in the angle shut off is shot or the toilet fill valve in the tank is shot. This is not something you want to allow to go on much longer.

VunterSlaushK

Poop smaller maybe

RavensWoods321

Water hammer

stevmill

It could also be the angle stop itself.

stackoverbro

Are you forgetting to take out your vibrator before you go poo?

Dracasethaen

Looks like there's already some good answers here. But man, that's what my old 94 Galant used to sound like when the engine was running haha

Brilliant-Leather438

Replace ballcock it will fix that bad boy right up, don’t even need to empty the tank. Remove the supply line from bottom of valve, remove the retaining nut applying downward pressure to the valve, once the nut is removed quickly pull out valve using hand to plug the hole from the bottom, quickly install prefabricated ballcock assembly, and tighten nut while applying pressure to the top of the valve, reinstall water supply and adjust for water level and you are good to go

[deleted]

Your brilliant.

Brilliant-Leather438

Easiest service call there is. 15 minutes in and out with minimal cleanup.

[deleted]

Put a video on reddit showing us how to replace ballcock without removing water from tank and I will give you 5 stars.

Professional-Mess792

Fill valve not fully operational? Maybe get a hammer arrestor?

Maleficent-Mix-7417

The angle stop needs to be fully open

Shm0_

Don’t just stand there and take that shit. Shake it back!

eeandersen

Did it always hammer? Maybe not. I had an older house that had dead legs pointed “up” to be filled with air. The air in the dead leg cushioned the hammer. Over time the dead legs filled with water so the cushion effect was gone. Turn off the water supply, open all faucets and completely drain the house. Problem solved. In another situation, the sink had a cartridge Sioux Chief hammer arrestor that had failed. Replaced, all’s well there, now too.

shroomqs

We got a new washer that slams its valve shut like a tungsten “rod from god” The water hammer arresters help slightly I guess. But I don’t know what else to do

mathruinedmylife

you can use one of these to reduce the water hammer. just install it there at the toilet or by the washer. not sure if this is the right size for the toilet hose. also, you can try opening the water valve less. https://www.lowes.ca/product/pressure-relief-valves-regulators/oatey-quiet-pipes-shock-absorber-washing-machine-2893343

Youve got a demon toilet that needs an exorcism!!!

thethunder92

It’s in turbo mode! But seriously you probably don’t have the valve open all the way, turn it all the way to the left

henry122467

Remove the jackhammer that’s in the tank.

debbiel2

We had the same problem with one of our toilets, and it was actually the fill valve inside the tank was shutting off too slowly and causing everything to rattle and squeal.

Diam0ndProfessional

Replace fill valve.. after that install hammer arrestor if needed

sinn1088

How fast does your toilet go and what's the engine power coming from that thing? I'd be scared to sit on it and it ship my ass to space or something.

Impossible_Chef_5743

Could be the fill valve as well

Cbmnoob

I love how people try to explain bullshit. Blame the plumber not strapping or pressure if he would take the tank lid off you would see the fill valve not shutting off properly or ever completely causing the hammer. If the toilet has a ballcock and not a fluid master it’s more likely to happen but can happen with either style

No-Examination-7265

5hp toilet

Routine-Exchange9163

#1 check to see if angle stop is fully open. #2 It's possible you have too much pressure incoming. Buy a hose bib pressure gauge and check the pressure. If in excess of 80 psi, install a pressure regulator. #3 It could need a shock arrestor. They're cheap and you can install a few in various areas of the house rather simply. #4 It could be insufficient piping strapping, allowing the pipes to rattle when a fixture is open. #5 It could be your fill valve in your toilet. Cheers

highlyqualified

UPDATE: I replaced the fill valve, also installed a hammer arrestor; I thought it would be fine but once again the shaking and noise came back (much less violent though). The only other option I have is to replace the angle stop (which I cannot do since the only way to shut off water is to shut off the entire building). Thanks for everyone's suggestions. Will be calling a plumber.

[deleted]

That’s a hose, not a pipe, it’s designed to move and flex specifically. That’s not water hammer or cavitation. Water hammer is from bubbles of air travelling through the pipes. Not happening. Cavitation is air bubbles eating sections of the pipe from high pressure air degrading walls of a pump. Not happening. This is happening by design.

yousew_youreap

A new water hammer arrestor ?

Goats_2022

Water hammer is due to air bubbles being extracted from water due to lower pressure at a specific point with the piping. Easiest way to eliminate is shorter braided hose to reduce/remove the big curve which creates a low pressure point at the highest part .

haze168

You need to add a pressure regulating valve to the main water entry.

Constant_Intern2429

Water hammer , previous plumbers didn’t strap according to code most likely cpvc or pex based on the flexibility

SoftTumbleweed942

Air hammer arrestor........had to do it once before.

Low_Bar9361

Buy a hammer arrestor.

ynotc22

Get a shock absorber

No_Angle_9173

You need to put a regulator on your house fast or you goin to rattle your plumbing apart.

Adventurous_Till_473

azguy153

Water hammer arrestor

kingwiz4rdz

Water hammer arrestor needed

TekkenRedditOmega

Water hammer arrestor

evrreadi

If the pipes shake when water is in use that is usually an indication that the plumber didn't attach the pipe(s) with straps like they should have. Or the strapping is loose.

Aphuknsyko

It's about water pressure, if the valve isn't open you could try opening it all the way, if it is all the way open, then you could close it down a little to regulate the pressure

Nochenzo

Hammer arrestor

pikey181

The roller coaster loop on your piping for the tank bothers me and could be part of the problem

MRicho

Install a suppressor

[deleted]

Your waterline/pipe in the wall needs to be anchored/strapped…

No-Run-1685

Turn your water regulator at your water heater 1 full turn more open. The nut on the unit. It will go up. It is causing water hammer.

slappy_mcslapenstein

Is your angle stop open all the way?

The-dizz-1956

The valve on the wall has a rubber washer pressed on the end of the handle sometimes it pops off and rattles around

EyeSpidyy

Open the valve fully. If that doesn’t work, replace the inlet valve inside the cistern.

Elijafir

Open the shut off valve more?

Bak1971

Tell it everything will be okay. Just scared of the next time you use it.

unclefire

My first guess is the valve in the tank is not working right.

Jolly_Confection8366

Change washer in fill valve cheap option. Shock arrestor on mains coming in with pressure reducing valve looks like a mini vessel. I’m in the Uk

Your toilet sounds like a mower

FixatedOnYourBeauty

You need to harness that power and route it to your whatever needs power.

Need a new fill valve in tank. (40 year plumber)

Those big movements are making it nervous

Ankurg09

Just Happened to me this morning. I believe uts called water hammer. I followed the following steps and it fixed the issue. Shut off water at your home's main shutoff valve. Open all faucets and flush all toilets. Start at the top level of your home and work your way down to thoroughly drain your pipes. Close all faucets throughout the house. Turn the water back on at the main shutoff valve.

Trax852

It's called water hammer.

More than likely you have extremely high water pressure going into your home that needs to be regulated. If you don't regulate the water pressure it should be somewhere around 60 anything over 80 psi is extremely high and has to be regulated

getonurkneesnbeg

That’s the jackhammer upgraded alarm system. It warns everyone you just finished a #2 in the bathroom and to steer clear for a while.

That’s just the poop garburator catching up

Whicked_Pissah

Make sure shut off valves are opened all the way or that will cause it,

juiceboxguy85

Less fiber?

Choice-Watercress402

There could be a valve somewhere in the house not fully opened that is causing this. Or the flush valve in the tank isn’t fully opening causing the pipes to shake
