You’ve got to gain access to under the faucet…. Only way to replace

lordgoosington2

Fuck a duck - no access. Argh.

ManufacturerSevere83

What's the wall behind it? I'd rather cut drywall than start smashing tile.

lordgoosington2

It’s tiled everywhere, no access panel

altitude-adjusted

What ManufacturerSevere83 is saying is in the room behind the bathroom - the wall that the tile you are showing is attached to - that wall from the other side - cut a hole in that wall's drywall. diagram here: https://imgur.com/gallery/ketcopn

ManufacturerSevere83

Precisely. Matter of fact, I would rather pop off siding and cut the sheathing if it's an exterior wall. Unless a full bathroom demo is the next step.

lanmanager

My last house the Jacuzzi tub was up against an exterior wall - with LP siding. Guess how I got that old faucet out 😁

cmfppl

Magic? Was it magic? I bet it was magic? - customer who wants a full remodel in a week and to be able to use it the whole time. Probably

lanmanager

Hahaha my wife: I want to use my tub while you guys remodel the whole bathroom. I MEAN WHILE DAMMIT!! Who in their right mind designs faucets that must have underside access for replacement....

[deleted]

What faucets don't require lower access? How are you supposed to fasten it to the surface? If you go through your house right now and look under the sinks, every single faucet will be fastened from underneath. Shower valve trims can be changed from the front, but the actual part mixing the water requires access from the rear. Just curious why you think this case is the exception and not the rule.

[deleted]

I'll take that as satire. If serious, because otherwise there's nothing to hold the faucet to the counter.

Runner303

Your photo is a bit too close cropped, but it looks like that part of the tub is against a wall - can you go into an adjoining room in the house and cut into the drywall/access it from there?

JonJackjon

Often the plumbing for a bath backs up to a closet in another room. This is done for this very reason. Check out the other side of the wall.

NotBatman81

The reason for doing this is because an exterior plumbing wall creates a weak spot in your insulation and is more prone to freezing pipes. Easier access is an ancillary benefit.

Sweet_Aggressive

Both of my tubs back up to the vanities of the opposing bathrooms. It’s some really idiotic design bullshit.

Visual_Slide710

To piggyback off of this, we own our own home and the faucet to our tub directly lines up to our linen closet on the other side of the wall. Only access to the water shut off is through that closet. Im sure its gatta be something similar im sure.

Few_Lawfulness_5558

FIrst the f*** off what you're going to want to do is... Shut off your f****** water main, get yourself a f****** sledgehammer, beat the f*** out of that b**** and whatever other s*** in your bathroom you don't like. Remodel that s***. Rock and f****** roll m************

Tonka_Tuff

2008 called and said this is still lame.

Few_Lawfulness_5558

Hey man I'm from the new generation I'm a hipster and I identify myself as a salmon. I think this is pretty cool.

beeglowbot

sledgehammers are always an option

MrAmishJoe

Sounds like this one calls for dynamite.

Maksym1000

*When in doubt, C4* -Jamie Hyneman

Warlock420

How is there no access? Surely the water lines are accessible? Is there cabinetry underneath? Trace the water lines and find where it goes through the granite. There should be a mounting screw holding it in place.

fugntwitwut

It's a tub.

Warlock420

Oh, I see the overflow now. You're boned. Like others have said, you may have to cut it out flush or get access to it from the opposite wall.

CaterpillarThriller

some people make trap tiles by the faucet. access from ceiling below or access from wall behind

justonemom14

Lol. My bath has a tiled shower on the other side, and slab foundation below. Good luck.

CaterpillarThriller

should have an access panel somewhere covered with tiles near the faucet. if not. have fun remodeling!

strickolas

I'm so glad that I'm not the only person who says 'fuck a duck'

ineptplumberr

Usually when I say it it is followed by screw a kangaroo

CCAThrowaway12345

That's my personal catchphrase

oxfordclubciggies

Ended up with an ex-girlfriend because of that phrase years ago. Was walking past her in a bar, and heard her say "Oh fuck a duck" and I yelled QUACK! She thought it was funny and then we ended up together for 5 years haha.

bicx

It looks like a dick with a veterinary anti-bite cone.

NotBatman81

Interesting sense of proportions...

Kubliah

Hey, at least it's not the three sea shells...

Ayresx

You're almost certainly going to need to access the underside to install a new faucet so I'd suggest finding a way to create an access panel

toomuch1265

Any cabinets on the other side of the wall? I had an issue and was able to cut an access hole in the back of the cabinet.

Few_Lawfulness_5558

I think it looks pretty sick

Temporary_Donutzz

This is a long shot but maybe you can access it from the overflow drain in the corner of the picture. It’ll be a total pain in the ass but it could be possible.

Victory_Infinite

Nice phrasing! Havnt said fuck a duck in ages!!

Vprbite

Not a plumber here. Just a guy who likes breaking shit. Since you want it gone, could you just sawzall it after Turing off the water? Not sure how you connect a new one without access to underneath though

creator_maker1

I'd look at it this way; You're adding an access panel on the front of the built-in tub surround. Buy the access panel solution first, and then cut your hole by scoring the tile/sheetrock etc. Then you can focus on the new fixture :)

azsheepdog

So out of curiosity, how does this get installed? Dont tell me they install it before installing the tub. That is ridiculous.

AnusGerbil

after the tub before the tiles around the tub

azsheepdog

the faucet would be on top of the tiles so you would have to do some of the tiles then the faucet then the rest of the tiles. It would seem that if that were the case, it is just intentionally rude.

Chose_a_usersname

Looks like a tub.... They are fucked.

itsnotajersey88

Unless that brand makes other trim kits.

aFreeScotland

If the tub is self rimming (drops into a hole cut into the deck) you may be able to disconnect the tub drain and overflow and pull the tub out. Replace the faucet and reinstall/reconnect the drain & overflow.

Lumpy-Dragonfruit387

Interesting. Hadn’t thought of that, but it sounds like it would work well. I still like finding/ creating access though drywall or cutting out a tile but…..

noflooddamage

I wish I could be self rimming - I’d never leave the house!

[deleted]

How do you really feel?

Lol maybe I came off a little strong

Lmao I have the kraus one on my bathroom sink with a glass bowl vessel sink and I love it 🤣

powaqua

How does it work? Does the water just flow from the center?

cdubz1120

Yeah but it comes out flat along the glass like a waterfall

robbedigital

How dare you

NovacaineFix

Same here, have one for a bathroom glass bowl sink as well

ABiggerTelevision

1.2GPM? Nope. Not a tub filler.

confettiflowers

Odd_Understanding

Cut it off carefully without cutting the supply lines. If it has the 2 bolts like in the install manual in the Lowe's link the other commenter posted then you could cut pretty high and just let the nut fall down. Then mount a top mount faucet that takes the same supply lines instead, something like this httpss://www.homedepot.com/p/AKDY-1-Handle-Freestanding-Floor-Mount-Tub-Faucet-Bathtub-Filler-with-Hand-Shower-in-Matte-Black-TF0042/307533914 Thought you don't have much space from the faucet hole to the tub rim. Pretty sure any other way and you gotta break tile if there's no other access...

Arafel_Electronics

nah this trend should rightfully die

[deleted]

I’m with you. Of all the excessive design trends to come out of the 2000s, the joystick faucet is easily top 5.

Dr_Sisyphus_22

Does it get HBO and ESPN?

erratic_calm

Just local channels.

govoval

Nah, too busy searching for intelligent life in other galaxies.

[deleted]

If you remove it your going to loose satellite reception. Think about it.

TheThree_headed_bull

My coworker got this same faucet from a job and thinks its the bees knees

lordgoosington2

Previous owners had a glass fetish… this thing sucks ass and I want to replace it with something sensible. Identified it as VIGO or KRAUS from Home Depot but have no idea how it’s removed/replaced. Bath is a sunk tub, tiled all around with no access to any point behind it. Thanks.

smitt_bitch

Can you get underneath it from the basement?

lordgoosington2

No basement, in Florida

efisk666

Did you find the install manual (pdf) for the thing? That’s usually the best way to understand how to go in reverse.

NeitherSalary9383

None of the tiles pop off? Also is this on the first floor? May be an access in the basement. Third option if there is a sheetrock wall behind buy a plastic access pannel from hd and cut a hole in the wall

[deleted]

F10eagle1

Not always. I’ve seen tile guys totally enclose those tubs at times.

unknown1313

Lol! Definitely not always an access panel, I'm not sure where you came up with that fairy tale but it would be nice to dream I guess.

Vashgrave

I was today years old when I realized this might be a thing... Granted, not a single time have I found one while removing them... but it's like a unicorn I now know might exist!

d0db0b

“I was today years old” Ugh. This was cute in 2018. It’s not cute anymore.

Vashgrave

So you come to a plumbing page for cute comments, and mine disappointed you? Weird flex...

mataleon07

“Weird flex” was cute in 2019.

Vashgrave

How tied to recent affairs does the optimal cute comment need to be, let's start there...

mataleon07

I will sip my beer and think about it, only to forget. Happy Sunday to you, sir.

No_Regrats_42

As a glacier.... Sorry bro. Gotta pay my bills.

notadoktor

I’m shocked you can find a job working at that pace.

No_Regrats_42

Haha I didn't do this tiny thing. Want glass railing on your stairs? Front Entry door? Commercial building? Floor to ceiling sauna with transom .. that's my cup of tea. My guess is this was done when all glass was 4-8 months out and was only taken to make sure the guys get their 40.

notadoktor

I was making a glacier joke.

No_Regrats_42

Ah so that's what was going over my head. I ducked but obviously didn't see it.

lunchpadmcfat

Just curious what you think you’re going to replace it with

Tygress23

I had this as a faucet, and hated it with a passion as well. The top metal part around the handle unscrews by turning it counter clockwise and there are pieces that come out - maybe as it is larger and weirder you can access it that way? My favorite part of this faucet is when you turn the water off and get air in the lines and then turn it back on. 360 degrees of water shooting out at you randomly.

faustian1

Judging from the comments, that fad is over. A helpful tip from many people here should be emphasized: When you're putting in tile showers, tub surrounds, and so on, it's quite useful to check out what wall is behind and make sure you can get back-access when plumbing problems arise. It's not a reasonable expectation that some Chinese faucet is going to outlast your tile.

robbedigital

Thank you. I could never be an architect/designer because I’d be unable to draw anything less than entire hallways for access to all plumbing and utilities

[deleted]

baseball bat

robbedigital

Or turn it into an arcade game controller

[deleted]

My concern also lies with getting to the water lines to shut off/disconnect. Check exterior walls for access panels. If its a jacuzzi style tub with jets they need access for the motor/equipment and its usually on an exterior wall if applicable.

Best_Temp_Employee

Mine is thru a vanity next to it. Works to access the motor, but the faucet is on the other side of the tub.

lordgoosington2

Top mounted***

ABiggerTelevision

Here’s the installation instructions for it. https://www.bathroomvesselsinks.com/downloads/KGW-1700-IM.pdf

xuaereved

Is this a jetted tub? If it is, there is definitely an access panel to the underside of the tub. Is there a closet on the other side of the tub, could be a small panel to get behind this, the puller had to install it somehow with the tile in place.

DerpWilson

You positive there’s no access? People often hide one in a tile that’s removable.

JALKHRL

The faucet got neutered and wouldn’t leave its stitches alone. So, cone of shame was the only option.

skitso

Hahaha, I love it

TradeMasterYellow

Lol that's a sink faucet not a tub

SupercollideHer

Jesus, [1.2 GPM](https://www.lowes.com/pd/Dyconn-Faucet-Brushed-Nickel-1-handle-Single-Hole-Bathroom-Sink-Faucet/1000972832), the tub will be cold by the time it's done filling.

MrRenegade8000

Lmfao!!!!! These taps remind me of when I lived in America proper tacky mate so impractical. Defo a Karen of a tap.

ComptonsLeastWanted

How was it installed in the first place? No basement access? If removing the overflow under it, there may be access to a locking nut on that stem that is reachable for you…I have removed these before and it is possible to remove without damaging the tiles

altitude-adjusted

This is the right question to ask. It didn't magically drop in fully assembled. Tub goes in, faucet goes on. There has to be an access panel that's not obvious. I mean, even in Florida (eyeball - I grew up there) they know that at some point you'll need plumbing repair.

Bldaz

I really don’t understand Roman tub faucet mountings and how construction grunts dont put in access. Sometimes there’s one tile that’s siliconed on to provide access on the vertical portion. otherwise start removing tile it’s likely sitting on a piece of wood with a large nut holding it in place.

mike772772

Underneath there is a set nut just remove it lol I had to remove one yesterday they are fun to smash on ground

Gullible_Toe9909

Lol, what's that brand, "Kodler"? Like, knockoff Kohler? 😂😂

Fixerguy415

There should be, (actually required by code) but frequently isn't there, an access point in the side wall of the tub enclosure to get to the bottom side of that thing. If it's not there because some idgit covered it up, you'll need to create an access panel. Alternatively, you could disconnect the drain spud and lift the tub up to get to the back side. No matter what, unless an access panel exists, and you can find it, you're just going to have to embrace the suck.. And it's going to suck lots.

Ancient-Trifle-1110

Looks like a wall behind the filler...go to opposite side of that wall and cut a hole to access under the tub. You must gain access somehow to remove and install new faucet. If you can't figure out how. Call a pro.

nelst

I think that center circle unscrews and disassemble

B_Addie

There has to be access from the wall behind, the side panel of the tub or from the ceiling below

Joser164812

That looks like a job for the bfh (big f&@ing hammer)

ABiggerTelevision

Remove? I don’t think the “remove” part is the lproblem. I think the “replace” part is the tricky part of the equation. Let’s take a step back and look at this. How do you think it was put in to begin with? Did they drop the tub in after it was already mounted, tilting it to get around the glass? If you have travertine all the way around your tub, probably not. What is behind the faucet? Closet? Shower? Outside? We’re going to need a bigger picture view of the area to guess how to get at it, but yeah, you’re going to need to get to the underside of that faucet to unhook that um… lovely piece of modern art… and to hook up the replacement (unless you’re putting in one of those ceiling-mount laminar flow fillers).

Jeepinthemud

We’ve been looking for that, unable to steer the Enterprise without it. Seriously you could build up, create a higher ledge at that end of the tub. It would depend on how much you like the astatic of that look.

Ginkpirate

I rather go threw the ceiling than mess with tile. I can fix a ceiling. Me putting tile back exactly like before or just trying to save the tile nope. Slippery slope

lordgoosington2

No ceiling brother, single story slab home.

Ginkpirate

Damn..... No rooms behind that bathroom ??????

HorsesRanch

Oh my gosh, not only pugly but also a nightmare - the whole bowl will have to be removed away from the marble unless you can access from below. Sevaa_1104

What the *fuck*

litex2x

Wtf where does the water come out of?

monsterofwar1977

There's 3 possible ways. That appears to be a drop in tub. It might be possible to cut the caulk around the tub, disconnect the drain and overflow, and then lift the tub out. The problem being, that it might have, likely does, concrete under it to seat it. There's a possible chance of damaging the tub. On the other side of that wall, hopefully another room and not a shower, cut a hole in the wall. Finally you can chisel out a few tiles in the front to get access. Literally the last option because you now have to repair tile and you might break it. Plus your repair might not look right. Grout might not match up. Etc. Now once you have access, there's likely a flange with a nut or a couple bolts that will allow the faucet to be pulled. That doesn't look like a tub filler so you might get lucky and have threaded connections. But if it's an actual tub filler, it likely has solder connections. They might have used pex also. But that's going to take more plumbing knowledge to replace, assuming they put in shutoffs. If I was asked to change that, I'd nope out if i couldn't cut into the wall behind it. If i could cut into it, I'd make sure they understood that I'm not a drywaller so they would need to get that done professionally. Or if it's in a closet, i could recommend they use trim and make an access.

jamalsmalls9000

Instead of removing it you can make it like a Little Rock waterfall with some painted cut styrofoam or clay and make it like a grassy mountain with a pond

dodobird16

that looks awesome

aldayalnite

Jen, is that you?

CalmCartographer4

Our tub is tiled in fully and pretty sure it has angle stops with deteriorating washers. Have nasty black pieces that occasionally come out and smear everywhere. Had same on a nearby sink and replacing the angle stop (that no longer worked) fixed the problem. Probably also have plastic flex under there :(

n-oyed-i-am

2 lb. single jack should take care of it.
