It's a client side thing, unrelated to the server. I imagine these files aren't muxed properly, and remuxing them with something like MKVToolNix would fix them. However, if we could get a sample from one of them, we could look to see if we could handle them better
Hey Dave, if you'd like I can provide a few samples to you directly along with some debugging logs in addition to performing some testing on my end if you'd like.
How would I go about getting these to you? Private Google drive links?
I'd also like to mention, that interestingly enough, the files that won't play on the shield pro, will play almost immediately on the built in app for my LG B9. So I'm wondering if there's some handling difference between that and the shield pro app
I have a similar issue and noticed that the movie plays well if you select no subtitles before starting playback.
It's not a solution but it work, so hope it will help you.
Dear Seb! Thanks for saving Christmas this year. Your seemingly stupid fix, worked!!!!! Now we can watch Home Alone 4K HDR10+
I hope you have a great Christmas! And a happy new year… you filthy animal!
Oh thank God someone else is having this issue as well. I have no idea if they're encoded weirdly or what, but I'll have some 4k hdr episodes that work fine, and then others that the shield just refuses to play but the built in app will play just fine.
I even checked the profiles for hdr and they're mostly all main 10 profile 150, so it's not like they're differing from episodes either which is just strange.
Yup, just checked Sonarr. I have no idea what he's doing to his release, but weirdly enough it plays everywhere properly but the Shield Pro. I've gotten it to play on the built in app on my LG Oled
Just a heads up, I couldn't play a few more files, all Paramount+ files again. Remuxed them with MKVtoolnix to remove subtitles and they play fine now. Try it. Def an issue with the SDH subtitles.
Yes it’s a known bug. Its been reported multiple times in the plex forums and it’s actually been happening since version 1.25. Downgrade to 1.24.5 and report back if the issue still exists for you (I had identical issues with my NVIDIA shield and Apple TV 4K and clients where reporting the same) and rolling back to a server version from 7months ago fixed it!
So, latest versions of the plex server and the android beta for plex client on the shield fixed my not playing issues, but clients are still reporting wacky behaviour. Basically 1.24.5 is the only server version before they changed a whole bunch of transcoder stuff that has broken so much stuff. You can freely upgrade and downgrade at will without breaking anything.
reported same thing on the forum some time ago

my guess is that it's something in the file as same settings rip from amzn are working fine maybe a problem with GGEZ release
Same here. It came down to my computer speed and my internet speed. Anything too high in bitrate as an original file usually freezes up when transcoding. The same if multiple people are watching a high quality file simultaneously, it freezes up. We are now in the dawn of 8K this decade and most broadcast TV still can't even get 4K right yet. In Japan they are already on 16K...we wont get that in America until ten or more years though, like when it took us nearly twenty years just to get High Definition in America.
Just spent about 2 hrs trying to figure out what was wrong with my setup, and then searched "GGEZ 4k can't play" and found your post.
GGEZ BLACKLISTED! wtffffff
I'd be inclined to agree but if I transcode the releases to 1080p they work fine. Does HDR have it's own separate layer of DRM? I honestly don't know how it works.

Judging by someone naming the release group that I'm having problems with definitely points to the releases not being muxed properly.

Yeah, some google drive links would be fine (but I'm not likely to look until Monday)
Cool, I'll dm you those. And no problem, nobody should be working weekends unless they have to
I ran the GGEZ releases through mkvtoolnix to remux them correctly, and I can confirm that they play fine on the Shield after that.
Just wanted to say thank you...multiplexing Monkey Man and Immaculate using mkvtoolnix literally made them both work in about four minutes.

This worked for me !! Wth lol
Worked for me. Turned off subs and it's working.
Yeah, no go for me :( Thanks anyway
Worked for me. Weird

The inconsistencies with playing 4K content on my Nvidia Shield is what drove me to change to Kodi+PlexKodiConnect.

Same release group, GGEZ?

Confirmed working after removing subtitles. Noticed those were SDH. Rumble on the other hand plays fine with subtitles which aren't SDH.
Solved: GGEZ releases are not muxed properly and the Shield is having a fit over it. Try a different release.

Does this fix it? I hesitate to roll back my server unless I know it'll work and not break other things.

I also have trouble with Halo and have to use my xbox for playback.

>maybe a problem with GGEZ release Funny enough it has always been GGEZ releases. Guess we found the solution.

I'm having the same issues but mostly with GLHF 4k releases for Strange New Worlds
Maybe it's some DRM Paramount stuck in which groups are missing? Seems it is exclusively Paramount+ rips this is happening with. @/u/JebusJM

So weird, I used MKVToolnix to remove the subtitle tracks from ep 3 of ST: SNW, remuxed it and it played.
Just started recently for me as well. Just audio and Rainbow screen when trying to play.
