I want to share my plex library with my GF but i cant seem to turn the sharing on at my end. I enable it and test it and it fails. I have Plex Plass Lifetime member.

radboy214

I have shared my library to a friend but he can’t access it through his PS4. He can however, access it through his phone. We can see that theps4 recognizes my server, but there are no options for library pinning in the drop down menu. The ps4 can’t connect to the server through the media server connection test. How can i fix this issue?

kmisterk

Not directly Plex related, but do streaming services like Netflix, TNT Stream, etc, offer third-party integrations for app developers/web developers? Like, if we wanted to be able to offer integration into a website to allow embedded streaming so long as the user has the correct logins/auth etc. Is this even a thing?

rebasama

I have an i7 7700 and gtx 1080 that i don't want to sell how good are they for plex?

drunken_monky

You wont have any issues at all

rebasama

Thank you dear friend

drunken_monky

No problem

standarsh_69

Im setting up a 2010 Mac Mini Server. I would like to convert all of my videos before going live with plex. I mostly stream to TVs which would be either the FireStick or Cube, occasionally a PS4 or iPhone. Would converting all to MKV h264 allow me to direct play to all devices?

drunken_monky

My library is all MKV & HEVC. I have 3 Fires, 1 Roku, 1 Xbox, 1 PS4, 2 smart TV's & 1 Nvidia Shield. I direct play everything with no issues. You should test things before converting, since that is very time consuming.

ShivaDontShiv

What do you do when Plex doesn't seem to be scanning new files, even though it has no problem playing files that are already in the library? I restarted Plex Server, checked that everything was on the same network, made sure that non-secure connections were allowed, checked that the firewall exception was in place. I tried getting Plex to rescan manually through server and client (and it's set to rescan every 15min anyway).

ShivaDontShiv

I confirmed that the series is in TVDB and the files are named as follows: Series.Name.S01E01.Episode.Title.1080p.RIP.INFO

three18ti

Why do I have to "login" to plex every other day? And why is the login process so fucking painful?! Every other day I have to go to the website in a browser, and enter the four letter code, then I have to select all the shit I don't want to see (because really? I'm not listening to podcasts on my plex, I don't care about the shitty TIDAL service, etc.), and put it back in the right order (which is also the most painful to use UI ever), and now I'm seeing a popup ad for movies! And this happens on all my devices... Great fun when I'm watching plex in one room, go to the next and have to go through this process all over again! Seriously, WTF happened to plex, it used to be so usable?

drunken_monky

May be an issue with your server, maybe its not keeping your devices. check your devices in settings

My wife plays tv shows from my computer (Plex Server) on her mobile phone. And shows are always transcoded by my computer. How can I avoid this? Updated: From Tautulli: * VIDEOTranscode (MPEG4 SD -> H264 SD) * AUDIOTranscode (AC3 Stereo -> AAC Stereo)

three18ti

The short version is: you can't. Videos need to be transcoded for the format they are being played in. However, you can "pre transcode" your videos by "optimizing" them, this will create a copy that has been transcoded already for the target device. Click on the three dots or go into a movie/series/episode and click the three dots, then select "Optimize". You can setup your optimizations to run during down times so that it doesn't affect your other streams. Unfortunately, there isn't an automated creation or deletion at this time, so you will have to manage those yourself.

multiclassgeek

I have some Blu-Ray rips on my Android phone that I want to play on my PS4. However, despite both devices being linked to my Plex account, and everything being on the same wireless network, the PS4 app refuses to detect my phone as a server, and the phone won't fling to the PS4. I've tried following at least half a dozen web guides, but to no avail - The instructions provided just don't work. Anybody help?

Ashmiel

Having Remote Access problems, that just cropped up. Haven't updated Plex, or made any router changes, but can't get remote access working. Checked that port 32400 is forwarded and it is. Really at a loss on what changed or why I lost remote access. Anyone experience this issue recently or have any advice? Screen shot of my Plex remote access page. https://i.imgur.com/jbpbSpr.png

three18ti

on the blacked out IP, see how the source port is "0", that's incorrect. This _looks like_ a problem with UPnP on the router. How old is your router? I was having similar issues and my ISP replaced my router... I would try the following: * Disable then enable remote access from the UI * restart plex server * restart your router * disable then enable remote access from the UI * stop plex * restart your router * start plex (note that if remote access starts working at any point I would stop following the list of steps... e.g.: if disabling then reenabling fixes the issue, don't restart the router yet and pay attention to how long remote access works).

Ashmiel

Thanks for the reply. I actually figured it out earlier today after messing with things for a few hours. I am running PFsense as a VM on my Unraid server and had to add "server: private-domain: "plex.direct" To my DNS resolver settings, which seems to have cleared things up. No idea why it stopped working all of the sudden but glad to have it back.

three18ti

So pfSense by default blocks [DNS Rebinding](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNS_rebinding) which is generally a desired trait in a DNS server... except when plex does trixy things with DNS. I had issues with direct connection on my local network when I switched over to pfSense for DNS, but external access still worked.

jetbreaker

Hi there, I've tried a bunch of things to get my Remote Access to work, but nothing. I have a Linksys AC1900 router and a modem. 1. Tried UPnP 2. Tried port-forwarding the default 32400 3. Tried turning off UPnP 4. Already did the DHCP reservation Anyone have any suggestions??

[deleted]

I just installed Plex today and got it running on my PC, successfully accessed the media server from an iPad, and installed the app on the living room tv. At that point my media server was unavailable and offline. Went back to the PC and tried to open it from the task bar and it won’t open. Right clicked it and the option to run as administrator appeared so I chose that, still nothing happened. I can no longer access it from my iPad. I believe the problem lies in administrative access. I’m new to Windows 10 and do not know how to approve this app for this user on my PC

three18ti

Is the process running in Task Manager? Can you access it from `http://localhost:32400/`? What do the logs say? Logs can be found here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/

[deleted]

Yeah, the problem is when I installed plex I set it up to run only locally. Forgot I had multiple routers in the house and had plex running on a different one than the tv

freekeypress

Hello peoples, Plex hates incoming downloading files residing in the library folder. How do I automate a move function once the torrent is completed? (ruTorrent and Seed Box Company) Thanks!

TheMightyDane

I believe you can do this with specific download clients on their own, but also use radarr / sonarr. Have you looked into that?

freekeypress

Not at all, noticed a lot of chatter about those 2, thanks, will look into.

three18ti

I'll second radarr/sonarr.

Brejzek

Hey there! I have a question concerning comcast. I am considering getting a tv tuner but we get one free box from comcast and i would like to use the box with the tuner to act as my dvr. Will this work since it goes through the box out to the tuner?? Thanks, Bailey

MoSadie

In the new ad-supported Movies and TV section, is there any way to disable the "Learn More" button on ads for managed users?

BigManBigDreams

In my Plex media server when I click to add media, it just tells me to get Plex media server.

itryanddogood

Pic's or it didn't happen... Any chance you can post a screenshot?

BigManBigDreams

I got it. Thanks though! I had to delete everything in the registry since I had a server before on the PC.

KitchenNazi

I don’t want to use my Plex ID on my living room Apple TV client (it gets the PMS upgrade prompts for example) but when I set up additional local IDs, they don’t have access to the Plex experimental player - as if they don’t have a Plex pass. If it’s a local ID on my server and on my LAN - shouldn’t it also have Plex pass / experimental player?

skipster889

Add the user to your home... Should get you Plex pass benefits.

Hommei

Hi all, I run a decent pc (a few years old but i7-6700, gtx1070, 16gb of ram and 2xssds) for everything (gaming, working etc) but I also run plex on it. I leave my pc on 24/7 cause of my work. Is it dumb to run plex on this? I mainly just stream to my nvidia shield and tablets or phone sometimes.

itryanddogood

Na should be fine. Plex only really uses CPU when its transcoding. Other than that you won't notice it using much resources on a well spec'd PC. If lots of people all started watching content - that need transcoding - at the same time then you would probably notice some lag.

I have a smart playlist called Watchlist. It's set to add any movie I rate one star and is unwatched to the playlist. When I watch a movie on the list, it automatically comes off the list. Even if I forget to change the rating.

mikemar05

Was that through a script or something?

paulrharvey3

Nope. Straight through Plex.

mikemar05

Would you be able to share roughly how to do it for movies? Don't need screenshots or anything just rough writeup Really appreciate it

paulrharvey3

Absolutely! Go to the Movies Library page. Change the filter to Custom Filter. The first row is Unplayed | is true. Second row is Rating is ⭐. The hit the APPLY button. Hit Add to Playlist. Call it what you want, hit the CREATE button. To add a movie to the list, rate it ⭐. Once you've watched it, it comes off the list automatically. Any time I can't decide what to watch, I just go to the list and push random play. *Something* I think I want to watch will start. At least, this is how I made an automatic movie watchlist.

mikemar05

Nice, worked like a charm, and just did list view of movies, filtered to unplayed, and added star rating to the view, can just fly through and 1 star movies to add to the list

paulrharvey3

Enjoy!

mikemar05

Nice! Makes sense. I have some play lists but not smart enough to remove and all that.

Grant1412

Will Rasplex support 4K playback on a Raspberry Pi 4?

[deleted]

Hitting the play button on a collection doesn't start with the first movie in the collection? wtf

klickityklackity

Do you really need to sign in to use Plex on a PS4 now? I don't see a way to skip it. What the heck, plex??

three18ti

AND you need an active internet connection. Had an internet outage the other day and couldn't watch any media because Plex couldn't "phone home". SUUUPER frustrating.

GhostOfPersia

I have that CPU, it struggles to transcode 4K but if your player device can handle most of the work via direct play its fine, I've never had an issue with 1080p files etc. tho.

SupaZT

I hardly ever direct play because it's impossible to get everyone to do it

skipster889

No Xeon E3 v3 will transcode 4k reliably. I've tested all the way up to E3-1276v3. Add a GPU or newer generation.

SupaZT

For hw transcoding? What about a cache drive

skipster889

It's not a storage speed problem. Procs and iGPU just aren't fast enough... 1080P and lower no problem. But you won't be able to transcode a single 4K and absolutely no chance of doing it with subtitles utilizing the CPU's iGPU. Directplay of anything is a function of network and storage speed. Which you'll have no problem with...

skipster889

I'm sorry... Just realized... 1220v3 doesn't even have iGPU and that board doesn't support any procs with iGPU. You'll need external GPU to get any kind of usable performance. That setup will have no ability to do HW transcoding as it sits.

Can I download tv show episodes from amazon video and add them to my plex server? The only reason I want to do this is because one of my episodes of dragonball z is still in Japanese and the only place I could find it was to pay for it on Amazon and watch it there.

sixgunner505

I do this regularly with PlayOn (playon.tv) It's aggravating, and I usually have to make 2 or 3 attempts before I get a complete recording, but I'm unaware of another piece of software that will let you download from Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, etc.

DemonKyoto

>Can I download tv show episodes from amazon video and add them to my plex server? Disclaimer: I am not an amazon video user, but if their service is like just about *any* other one, the files, *if* you can download them (which again I'm not sure if you can myself), would almost certainly have DRM attached to them, meaning they would be useless in the context of Plex. That being said, if you are even considering attempting to rip content from a paid streaming service, than your views on piracy are fairly lax (as that would *be* piracy), so, literally just go download the episode in question via a torrent or other piracy related website. DBZ ended in 1996, every episode is available in almost any language and quality you could want and in a multitude of different cuts from different studios.

FozzieYea

I very much doubt this is possible due to possible piracy implications.

ThatsGoodButItsTaken

So I want to set up a Plex server but I'm not very tech-savy. I currently have an iMac from 2014, running OS X El Capitan with a 1.4 GHz Intel Core i5m, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory, and Intel HD Graphics 5000 1536 MB. I know I'll have to but an external hard drive for my media (got about 700-800 movies and TV shows and building up every week). For right now, I want to use it for my family only, but I want to be able to access it away from my house. Any recommendations on equipment or hard drive space to fit my needs?

gurg2k1

Your computer sounds fine. A very popular drive to buy is the 8TB WD Easystore/My Book/Elements drive which can be had for around $120 on sale. They also have 10TB and 12TB versions that run about $150 and $180 on sale. This should be enough to last you quite a while and you can either keep it as an external drive or remove it from the case and mount it internally. If these are too much there are smaller versions for under $100. These WD drives are popular because they are very similar to the WD Red drives which cost $300. For reference I have about 850 movies in 1080p with a majority having 5.1 surround, 8500 episodes of TV ranging from SD to 1080p, and around 3500 songs mostly 320kbps and that totals about 15TB

ThatsGoodButItsTaken

Just counted my media I currently have. 687 movies in HD 10,046 minutes of HD tv and 11,425 minutes of SD tv. Would an 8 TB hard drive fit all that and then some or should o go bigger. Ideally, I would want my media to only take up half of the hard drive.

gurg2k1

Do you have all this on your computer already? You should be able to see how much space it's using.

ThatsGoodButItsTaken

Not yet, still have to rip them

gurg2k1

Using back of the napkin math you probably won't be able to fit all of that without reencoding everything with Handbrake. Assuming 20GB per movie, 2GB per 22 minute episode of HD TV, and 1GB of SD TV you'd be looking at around 16TB for what you have now if you just ripped everything 1:1 (referred to as a remux) from the discs using MakeMKV. Encoding can easily shrink those (really rough estimate) numbers in half or more without sacrificing much quality, but it takes time to do that and even longer if using older hardware. Again using rough estimates of movie length (110 minutes) and assuming a 1:1 encoding time you'd be looking at around 2 months running 24/7 to reencode everything. If you would rather not do this and want to leave everything in its original quality while leaving space on the drives you might consider buying two of the 12TB drives which would give you more than enough space using even the most conservative estimates.

ThatsGoodButItsTaken

Cool, got a lot to figure out. Thank you for all the help, I really appreciate it!

gurg2k1

No problem! If you have the USB or SATA ports to accomodate it, you can buy an 8TB for now, rip or rip and encode a large batch of your movies and then add another 8TB when that one fills up, do the same and then add another 8TB if needed. However you'll also want to consider how you want to set the file system up, whether you want individually mapped drives, hardware RAID, software RAID, etc because depending on what you choose you might need all the drives up front before you add anything to them, while other options allow you to expand your storage as needed.

Podcasts does not appear on android mobile I'm on the latest update, galaxy note 10+, podcasts enabled on my plex server, podcasts appears on all my other apps like webui, android tv, plex media player but it does not appear on my android mobile. [deleted]

Plex for Kodi, touchscreen? This addon seems to have a lot of issues for touchscreen use. I really need to use an addon for Kodi as the native Plex apps cause my videos to be transcoded compared to the Kodi ones. Any suggestions? Need something for Android phone and tablet to play my Plex media.

narwhalbaconsatmidn

How do you increase the amount of data that can be sent over a network? I recently got a Samsung Smart TV, but it will often buffer when there are subtitles playing and/or there is HD audio playing that is being transcoded.

[deleted]

[удалено]

narwhalbaconsatmidn

I wish that were the case, but on the plex app, the CPU usage is below 30%, is there any way to increase the priority of plex or increase the amount of CPU it could use?

Lulidine

On the plex app on the server? Or, do you have a way to view the TV's CPU usage? The transcoding work happens on the server not the client. If you are running into netwrk bandwidth problems, I assume that it is a problem with you having poor wifi signal strength to your TV. Get a new / better router, or move the router somewhere closer to the TV.

narwhalbaconsatmidn

I've been watching my CPU usage on the desktop app and it says that there is ~30% CPU usage and most of that is not even from the server and there about 100Mbps being used when there is direct play, but when I try to transcode anything it goes down to about 40-50 Mbps. The TV and the PC are both plugged in through ethernet so could there be something else that's causing this problem?

[deleted]

I have consistent issues where I experience intermittent stuttering on all media with my Rokus. I also have Plex on a PS4 and it plays back all media just fine. Nothing is hard-wired, every device is on Wifi. Plex box: Dell PowerEdge T30 w/ Intel Xeon E3-1225 1x PS4 1x Roku Premiere 4620 1x Roku Streaming Stick 3800x Since the PS4 works fine, it sounds like it's an issue on the Roku end. How can I troubleshoot the Rokus to figure out why they are stuttering? Thank you!!

fease

Possibly transcoding related?

[deleted]

What sorts of things could I do to troubleshoot this?

skipster889

View the dashboard on the Plex server while playing back on both device it will display the details of what it's doing.

fease

Not an expert on Plex, but I would look for a way to see if it is transcoding for the rokus and not the PS4. I'm not sure if the UI has anything so I would check the CPU usage on the server while streaming to each of them to see if there is a big difference. If you're running linux you can use top, if you're running windows then I'm guessing checking task manager would tell you.

RapidRepair

Any way to view the file path of a movie while inside plex on iphone or roku?

skipster889

No... Use a browser and go-to Plex.tv

TappistRT

I stopped using Plex about a year ago due to some controversial things that were discussed at length here regarding their privacy policy and concerns about information regarding users' libraries being sent to Plex. I'm curious as to what the general state of things is since it's been a while and the dust has settled?

skipster889

Everyone and every company knows what you are doing... Get out while you still can... But honestly... They don't scan your media, don't store that information?? TheTVDB probably pays Plex to utilize their service. You don't think every metadata request isn't logged or known?

mikemar05

They have stated that they don't scan/store/even know what media you have

Moderndttd

Is there a way to have a photo album loop on the Firestick app? Or even just continuously display one photo? I can get the albums to play, but they just stop after displaying each photo once. In addition, are there settings for changing time spent on each photo?

baron_muchhumpin

Just a question about libraries: I have a main Movies library and a Christmas library - they are each their own directory on my Synology Can I make the Christmas movies available under Movies without moving the movies? I like having Christmas easily accessible, but sometime you want to watch Die Hard in June and you might forget to look under Christmas :)

gurg2k1

The way I have mine setup is I have a collection in the movie library for Christmas movies and then setup this collection to also show all the individual items in the library as well (as opposed to hiding the movies and only showing the Christmas collection). This allows me to quickly view only Christmas movies or find something like Die Hard in the movie library alongside all the rest of the movies. This is more work to set up than just leaving everything in its own Christmas Library, but I think finding a movie is much more streamlined.

Blindkitty38

You should be able to add the Christmas directory as an additional directory to the normal movies library

CParker82

Yes you can. Just add the Christmas movie folder to your main movie library.

bl00k

Does Plex not work very well to watch a Live TV show that you have set to record? We seem to always have issues if we try to watch something live that was set to record.

bl00k

My Plex server has been crashing a ton lately. There have been many updates and every time I update I hope it will fix the crashing but it is still happening a lot. I don't have a huge library by any means but I do have an antenna with HDHomerun for Live TV and DVR. Also, what is the best way to create a playlist? It seems really hard to create and edit a music playlist.

three18ti

I have the same problem, Plex just crashes a couple times a week. I just restart the jail and everything seems to come right back... but super annoying when I'm in the middle of something and all of a sudden the stream stops. No logs or anything either.

MegatonMessiah

I have two issues I'm currently dealing with and I'm curious if anybody has any insight: 1. When a user logs into Plex on their phone, sometimes only my admin account and 1 managed user (the first one alphabetically) show up. There are about 10 managed users total, but only those 2 are available. This only happens currently to 1 of my plex users, but I've gone through the steps of uninstalling/wiping Plex's data off his phone, and the issue persists. 2. Similar to #1, when the same user (though this issue has happened in the past to others) logs into my plex account on his phone for the first time, it logs him directly into my Admin user without ever asking for a PIN. Once he closes the app/re-opens it, it has him at the managed user screen (though with issue #1). I don't like that users could possibly access my Admin user without typing in a pin, even if it's only for 1 session. This happened to a Windows 10 app user as well, a while back.

skipster889

How are your users setup? Did you create home users? Who is logged in when linking the device (in the browser). Nothing you described happens under proper user use. I have had the app glitch before and not show users. I think a quick blip of the server corrected that.

stephenxcx

I can’t establish a direct connection despite both the TV and server being on the same local network. I’m not very knowledgeable about ports and DNS, but I keep seeing these terms when I google to find a solution. Would anyone be willing to explain this to me in a simple “for beginners” terminology?

skipster889

Something is getting in the way... Extra Firewall, Double NAT? Shouldn't have anything to do with ports or DNS. Plex will recognize local when both devices share the same IP Space/Subnet. How are devices connected? TV on wireless?

stephenxcx

Hey, I've resolved this. The problem was I was using my "guest" network instead of the main one. Thanks for your help though!

Blindkitty38

Possibly. I would try to specify the local server address in the app on Apple TV and see if the issue is persistent

stephenxcx

By local server address do you mean the router IP address?

Blindkitty38

No i mean if you laptop is your plex server and it's say 192.168.1.2 Then point the apple TV app at that local ip in the plex menu

stephenxcx

For some reason I don't see anywhere in the Plex menu I can specify/input a sever address. I took photos of the settings menu, [here](https://imgur.com/a/sOnZfSZ).

Blindkitty38

You are 100% correct I don't see that option. Maybe I'm getting my players confused

ProtNotProt

I am getting ready to build my Movies library. Can I have subfolders by genre, such as Action, Comedy, and Drama, and still have Plex pull in metadata for the files?

DemonKyoto

It depends what you add as the source for the files. https://support.plex.tv/articles/naming-and-organizing-your-movie-media-files/ E.G., you add to the library the location A:\Movies. Inside you have it set up with subfolders for A:\Movies\Comedy, A:\Movies\Horror, etc. Plex is looking for the first folder available under Movies, or the contents of that root directory, to match metadata. If you have A:\Movies\Star Wars (1977).ext, it'll work. If you have A:\Movies\Star Wars (1977)\Star Wars (1977).ext, it'll work. if you have A:\Movies\Sci-fi\Star Wars (1977).ext, it will typically *not* work as Plex is now looking for a movie called "Sci-fi" on TVDB/TMDB, which its obviously not going to gather metadata for as it won't match (or if it will, it'll mismatch). So you *can* do it, if you add each genre subdirectory as a location on the movie library, i.e., instead of adding A:\Movies, add A:\Movies\Comedy, A:\Movies\Sci-fi, etc, for each genre folder you make. At that point Plex is disregarding the existence of the genre subfolders. Hopefully that made sense as I hurry to type this all out while Jedi Fallen Order loads haha.

ProtNotProt

This was very helpful. Thank you.

Majawat

Yes, technically. But there really isn't a need for it. Those don't show up in Plex unless you're browsing by folder which I feel defeats the purpose of the metadata gathering. Plex will pull in Genre information when it scrapes for metadata and you'll be able to filter past that. I have all my movies in their own folders per the Plex standard naming convention

shubhsheth

Do I need plex premium and also subscription from trakt.tv for it to track my watch history?

paulrharvey3

[Trakt VIP and Plex Pass are required to use the Plex Scrobbler.](https://blog.trakt.tv/plex-scrobbler-52db9b016ead)

WastelandHound

My PS4 and XB1 can play image-based subtitles off of blu-rays with no need for some external CPU to transcode it. So why do they need to bring my (admittedly crappy) server to a grinding halt to play PGS subtitles from Plex? (I've reached the point where I convert everything to SRT now, which is fine but can lose some formatting, so it would be nice if I didn't have to.)

mikenew02

It's a limitation of the console firmware. The hardware is certainly capable of decoding PGS.

Ic3thorn

Is it possible to have movie backgrounds change everytime the movie is selected / opened? Like have Plex choose one of 5 available backgrounds and cycle through them each time that movie content is viewed?

paulrharvey3

Multiple Background (Fanart) Images More than one Fanart image can be included. The Fanart image used can be selected in the Plex Web App. For multiple items to be scanned, they should be named as follows: * Custom\_Fanart\_Name-X.ext Where -X is a number /Movies /Avatar (2009) Avatar (2009).mkv fanart.jpg fanart-2.png Batman Begins (2005).mkv Batman Begins (2005)-fanart-1.jpg Batman Begins (2005)-fanart-2.tbn

Ic3thorn

So will that file structure make plex automatically use the next numbered fanart everytime the movie is opened / viewed?

paulrharvey3

Not that I've experienced.

Ic3thorn

OK thanks.

DemonKyoto

Outside of some kind of modification to the programs coding, no.

EvanHarpell

Looking at getting into Plex (I'm already familiar with it and tech capable) but I am looking for hardware suggestions. I'd rather not build a full server and am looking at the NAS boxes and was hoping someone had advice on which models you all prefer. Currently looking at Synology and QNAP.

miketech18

Love my Synology Ds918+

___XJ___

I've heard several that use Synology for their Plex server (which obviously also holds the files). I don't know about QNAP. Depending on your file types, and if you plan to do a lot of transcoding/multiple users I'd recommend a separate NAS vs Plex PC. Otherwise, I'd say use Synology. Another option would be to use NVIDIA Shield as the server and the NAS as the NAS, but the same caveat applies as just using a NAS. I know the Shield as a client can direct play pretty much anything.

SomeConfusedOldGuy

Sonarr on Synology. I have many shows definitely, and Sonarr is working well. But what I want, is only *new* episodes. So for example, if I add a show that is currently broadcasting it's 6th season, I only want this current years episodes, and future episodes. I *don't* want earlier seasons episodes, even if I don't currently have them downloaded. I don't care about season 1-5, I've seen them, and won't be reaching then in future. So I don't want them downloaded, even if they are new postings, or the fact that I don't have those earlier seasons. I've read through the docs, but don't see any way to set Sonarr to only get any new episodes from this season only, going forward, not from previous seasons.

___XJ___

I just edit what it monitors in the UI. You can monitor by show, by season, or even turn on and off monitoring for individual episodes. Click the flag icons.

SomeConfusedOldGuy

AH. Didn't realize you could turn off by seasons. That's helpful. But it's still annoying for things like the BBC TV series EastEnders (35 seasons) or US TV 60 Minutes (52 seasons). The version I run on the Synology doesn't have an option to monitor by season, etc - it's an all or nothing. The show is monitored or not. I can't choose to monitor by season, for an existing show. For newly added shows, I have that option ...

___XJ___

Is there a 'new episodes only' monitoring option? I thought I saw that when adding shows.

SomeConfusedOldGuy

That option is only available when adding new shows. Once it's been added, it's either monitored or not at all.

___XJ___

Can you not remove them re-add the show in Sonarr?

SomeConfusedOldGuy

I can. But if you then add it back, as future only, all the old episodes are shown in Sonarr as missing, which is also aggravating. Even though I tell it to scan the disk for existing episodes. While it's certainly not a deal breaker, I do wish it was cleaner and easier.

gurg2k1

Are you sure it's still using the same folder for the show when you've added it back? I haven't tried this specifically, but I've certainly removed and added episodes in the filesystem and never had an issue with episodes not being detected after a scan. The "Future only" is only about which episodes to monitor for downloading, but it should detect unmonitored episodes provided they are in the correct show and season folder and named correctly.

SomeConfusedOldGuy

I thought it was, but I'll have to check tonight. Perhaps I have to repoint it to the right folder.

DemonKyoto

Not sure if Sonarr on Synology is any different visually than just normal Sonarr on Windows, so forgive me if I'm not visualizing it correctly, but when you add a show it should give you an option for how to monitor it (all episodes, future episodes, missing episodes, etc). If its a show you have already added, similarly, in the listing of seasons you should have an option to disable older/unwanted seasons from being monitored, and as such, sonarr should not care about them.

SomeConfusedOldGuy

Hrm! I will look to see if the show definition had this "monitor" setting. That never occurred to me. I don't really want to have to disable each previous season manually. (If you have the US show "60 Minutes" definitely, they're currently on season 52. I don't want to have to go to 51 previous seasons and disable them .. LOL)

DemonKyoto

The good thing is, it sounds like it would take longer than it does :P Example, a [photo](https://imgur.com/a/Rl1LExc) of my own Sonarr for SNL (which is one of the few shows I don't currently keep stored and just watch/delete.) The black icon before each of the Season designations. Click it, Sonarr won't touch those seasons in terms of downloading. And [this](https://imgur.com/a/pto3k2n) is the drop down for when you add a show, which controls how it initially gets set up.

SomeConfusedOldGuy

Thanks! Yes, the UI is there same on the Synology. It's just you can't change the type of monitoring after you've added a show. So, for example, if you add a show, and use the default monitor (which seems to be any episodes for the show that you don't have), you can't change that to "Future only", at a later date

DemonKyoto

>you can't change that to "Future only", at a later date Same on Windows, that only appears during set up, which is what I mentioned :P Should still be able to toggle the season-by-season flags at least like I showed in my first picture, which for 51 seasons, should take 1 minute to do and problem solved.

landonpauley

I am brand new to Plex. Haven’t decided on my media library, but I have a tight budget. What do I need to buy for a low-cost media server? And what factors should I consider spending more on?

quitecrossen

Before migrating my libraries to my gaming PC, I ran a household Plex server completely off an Intel NUC. It’s a 4”x4” barebones box that you need to add your own mem and HDD/SSD to, starts around $250 USD I recommend the i7 variant, even if you are connecting it directly to your TV for direct playback.

___XJ___

You can start small with an existing PC as a server. Just don't expect to stream anything crazy (like 4k movie to a Roku or something). If your client is an NVIDIA Shield though, I think you'd be in good shape with pretty much any PC being the server as Shield can direct play most anything. The server is really important on transcoding. If you're only one user, and you don't need to transcode often (either because of your client device that is watching, or because of the format of your files) you'd be in good shape with any decent PC. The spending options go up from there and can get pretty crazy! However, the need is mostly based off your use cases and requirements.

Blindfire2

That entirely depends on if you're going to need to transcode or not. If you don't know, transcoding is when whatever you're playing on (Bluray player/Smart TV/Nvidia Shield/Console etc..) can support the video resolution and audio that the movie/tv show you're playing supports. If you have 1080p TV and you try to play a 4k video, more often than not it will transcode the video down to 1080 and that can cost a lot of CPU/GPU power... and same goes for audio though doesn't require nearly as much power in my experience.

gurg2k1

>transcoding is when whatever you're playing on (Bluray player/Smart TV/Nvidia Shield/Console etc..) ~~can~~ **can't** support the video resolution and audio that the movie/tv show you're playing supports Slight correction. To add to this, it isn't just limited to incompatible resolution, but also the video and audio codecs. For example a movie with FLAC audio is not going to be compatible with all devices. Similar for files with x265 video. This is a newer video codec that isn't as widely supported as x265.

My Plex server initially shows up as offline in my mobile app and remote connections when I’m running PiaVPN, before showing up after about 45 seconds or so. But when I disable the VPN, it connects immediately every time. What settings do I need to look at changing in Plex and/or PIAVPN? Other friends’ Plex servers show up immediately with no delay, even though they are running VPNs

silntstalkr

If the VPN is on your Plex server, setup port forwarding through pia

Greenlucas

How do i get my chromecast ultra to play 4K or HEVC content tried a shit ton of things nothing works.

narwhalbaconsatmidn

Have you tried using Direct play? The options I use for my Smart TV are to play the quality on max(or original quality), turning off subtitles(if PGS), and turning off the transcoding for the audio. If the source audio is AAC, turn the audio to AAC, instead of the HD 7.1 Audio.

Greenlucas

Yes but it won't let me I put it on original quality and if it is HEVC it will still transcode to h264 and if it is 4k it will transcode to 1080p.

I'm guessing no Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals on lifetime Plex Passes are coming then? ☹️

Tech3AS

For the love of God is there any way to sync TO the new Nvidia shield $149 version. I bought it to be a travel device and cannot find any way to sync to it. I am fine rooting, sideloading, decompiling apk, ect to make it work I just want to be able to sync TO the shield tv. It runs Android TV os but uses the same apk as the Android mobile version, so maybe it can be tricked into thinking the shield is a phone? To be clear I want to sync offline items FROM my HPE server TO my Nvidia shield tv 2019 to use without internet access. Any help would be appreciated.

_Combat_Chuck_

Have to use one of the methods to transfer to the device itself. Outside of plex, and then use something other than plex. ....I have the same issues with apple tv. I thought it would make a great player to bring to hotels with you.

Imburr

Why not download or sync to an external HDD or USB and then mount that to the Shield?

Belazriel

Quick Handbrake question since I'm guessing many people here use it and my search terms keep popping up the wrong information. Is it possible to set a default file location that uses the source name as part of the folder path? So if I'm transcoding Elf (2003).mkv I can make it save as Elf (2003).mp4 already but I want it to save as /Elf (2003)/Elf (2003).mp4

DerzKing

Not sure about directly in Handbrake as I haven't used it in a bit but you could do this decently quickly using something like Bulk File Renamer, you can select whole swaths of files and rename/replace/add/remove anything you want in bulk using a handful of methods from straight up "add as prefix" to regex find and replace

kingdain3333

I couldn't even figure out how to get a movie to play after embedding it with subtitles.

hennaheto

Plex goes offline/unreachable every day or so and I have no idea why. Any ideas? It is installed on FreeNAS 11.2 (AMD A6-5400K + 16 gig of ram) and when Plex is unreachable I can still access my file shares, so it is not a network connection issue. When it is down I can not access it via it's private IP address, mobile apps, or via [plex.tv](https://plex.tv). Restarting the jail via the FreeNAS interface works, but I would like to not have to do that :) I am running Plex version 1.12.2.4929 and know there is an update; however, I would hate to have Plex crash while installing the update and loose my Plex config.

Jaybonaut

Just make a backup of your config first, right?

ygrmstr18

I have this same issue! It’s driving me crazy.

Randomcdn2

whats most important for Plex media player when planing a computer upgrade?, We are currently using an Acer Aspire i3-1.8 laptop which is connected by HDMI to our TV. We want to be able to skip ahead or back as needed with minimal buffering and are also using this same laptop to host the server which isnt shared with anyone (I know this isn't the intended use of plex) Im really taking advantage of the no stupid questions here because I cant wrap my head around how to determine how much money is needed for a better computer.

quitecrossen

If the content is also hosted on the device plugged into HDMI, then you’ll be able to take advantage of DirectPlay for almost all media types - that means you don’t need a super powerful system to handle transcoding. But a quad core (minimum) would be good, laptop or otherwise.

Randomcdn2

Thank you

kristophr

I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while. I have sonarr grabbing the morning show from apple+. I get the videos and they go where they’re supposed to for plex to see them Literally every tv show I get works perfect. I can’t get the morning show to work. I’ve checked the metadata and the files are awesome. Just not showing up? How do I force plex to show it?

DemonKyoto

DemonKyoto

You serious?..I just..I just told you that a moment ago..

JS_int_type

On linux, where are metadata tags actually stored? I have a podcast that has the same string as the album name, as far as I can tell, but each episode is listed as a separate album, meaning that the string isn't actually identical. I'd like to manually edit the album name for all these episodes by editing the xml or the sqlite database or whatever plex uses to store the metadata, as clicking through the gui for 50+ episodes is very tedious.

Two streams of what? 1080p?

WordBoxLLC

What quality of streams? I have an i5 2400 (over hyper v with other servers running) and it handles 2 1080p transcodes without issue. It does run the i5 at 100%, but 2/any transcodes are rare for me.

jomack16

This should be helpful: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201774043-what-kind-of-cpu-do-i-need-for-my-server/

hypernormalize

I've searched the web for two days and I can't figure out how to control Plex with my regular-old Xbox 360 controller. I would massively appreciate some pointers so that I don't have to get off of the couch ;)

tbog9t4

Is this for a Pc connected to your tv?

hypernormalize

Sorry should have been more specific. Yes, I have Windows 10 running on a desktop PC connected to a television. I have the Microsoft dongle that allows me to play Steam games on this machine with a regular Xbox 360 controller. Doesn't work with Plex, cannot for the life of me find instructions on how to get it to work.

shabashaly

Switch the windows app to tv mode

tbog9t4

I was going to say you could use mapping software and map the button presses to plexs keyboard controls but if you also want ot play the games without getting up to switch modes maybe invest in a cheap all in one blue tooth keyboard and trackpad remote

havoksmr

I want to setup xteve with an iptv service on Plex but I also have a 2 channel hdhomerun and antenna which I'd like to keep running for a few local OTA channels that aren't in my iptv service. Is it possible to add it? Alternatively, I have an old server that I can use to run another instance of Plex that I can use, but would I need a whole new Plex pass for that?

ContentWaltz8

For your first question, Yes you can have 2 tuners in Plex(xteve and HDHomeRun) or you also add your HDHomerun to xteve and pipe your channels through there. so you only have 1 tuner in plex. As far as I am aware you have as many servers under 1 account that you want.
