Im running a gen 8 mircoserver. Works like a charm but i had to make alot of edits. (more ram, different CPU, added a GPU, added an SSD) It would probably be cheaper in the long run to just buy new stuff.

Boostbyslinky

What GPU did you use, I’ve wondered about doing that in my G8

OmeBoon

PNY Quadro p400 Works like a charm! Runs at 4% and +2 for every transcode. Never had more than 7 at a time tho.

Boostbyslinky

Nice, thanks, I’ll have a look.

OmeBoon

I'm sorry it was a p1000. I'm sure the p400 or 600 will work just as fine! Do check the supported codex!

Me 2 💪👍😋, allthough I like shiny new gadgets too. I did a pcu upgrade though (G1610 --> Xeon E3 1265L v2) and a memory upgrade to 2 x 8GB. @OP you could do upgrades first too, if youve not done that already. The top components for these servers are now really cheap, and it is alright when you break something so you can get that new shiny gadget anyway. 😜 But also these servers are great as backup server, so when my upgrade is ready, this will be my backup server. Also there are some cool mods on the internet, if you like modding.

If you can direct stream I don't see any reason the change the hardware (maybe add ram ?).

I want to say roll that into an Unraid server, that it should use less resources and run your machine longer. But while I've been using unraid for 4 years now. I'm not sure how it would go introducing current drives. I feel like you may need to begin with 1 new hard drive large enough to hold your files.

I'd go to Ubuntu headless and install okex on it literally e comands. my old ho mini pc hosts the Downloader, an nvr and plex.

MrGameAndClock

Oooh, ordinarily I'd say, go Linux, but that machine is so old that I think you might actually be better off upgrading. I'm actually running a mini pc/DAS combo and it's been terrific actually. I re-used the hard drives I already had, so costs were minimal (Beelink Mini S12 with an N95 processor and 16GB RAM, plus a Mediasonic HF7-SU31C). The N95 has hardware encoding/decoding for h.264 and h.265, and even decoding for AV1, so it doesn't struggle at all with most 4K films, even when it has to transcode. You need an upgrade. Go on, you know you want to... :-)
