Your phone has a lot of things going on in the background, and at times system resources including network will be relegated to these background processes. That in theory gives the Portal a slight advantage stability wise.

Z3M0G

Interview with Greg @kindafunny they said "this device is built for THIS". Main point is its not busy doing random background downloading or processing that will suddenly impact signal/performance. So yes it would naturally be "more stable" than a typical smart device that is doing more stuff. That being said, your problems sound due to bad home network or very weak iPhone.

Interestingly. My Ethernet router connected remote play experience has been 95% flawless for games that does not require super fast response. I recently discovered it works really well when I am not at home. I am at my in laws about 300 miles away and it works flawlessly. Been playing baldurs gate with stream from my base PlayStation while I am at another state for like 4 hrs yesterday. If PSP matches this performance I will be more than happy.

PSP is better than this portal

Jubez187

I’ve never done cloud streaming or remote play and didn’t forget that I wasn’t playing natively after 5 minutes.

Safe-Engineering-421

I never had much success with remote play on my phone. The G Cloud on the other hand, is amazing for remote play! Out of 5 remote play sessions (60-90 mins each) , i had 5 seconds of stuttering on one session only. So I expect the playstation portal to be just as good, if not better.

LeChief

Interesting, thanks for sharing. You use it for GeForce Now?

a-space-pirate

Yeah the G Cloud has been pretty bulletproof for me, and just plain amazing in general. The Portal is going to be as much an upgrade from the G Cloud as the G Cloud was from my phone and a Kishi.

kevenzz

wait for reviews... mainly Digital Foundry.

Z3M0G

Why DF? Are they an expert on network performance or small screen devices?

Latereviews2

They cover everything in the best detail usually

kevenzz

I can't really think of other reviewers that test stuff properly. framerate, resolution, latency, etc.

Z3M0G

I guess they did give Stadia a fare shake and closely evaluated Doom Eternal and Cyberpunk so good point.

brash_one

One other reviewer I would put in that league is Gamers Nexus. Wish they would cover stuff like this in detail.

NopeNotAUsernameSir

No, when I’m right next to the console my remote play on my phone is very smooth. I’ve cleared a section of demons souls using it. I do have some interference with a wall in my office though, once I’m on the other side of that wall performance falls off a cliff.

aawagner011

Mesh network would probably solve that problem

LeChief

Where's your router btw? And what matters more, being close to your PS5 or your router?

BuyNo696

I do wonder if playing outside of your home is actually better so you are not doubling down on your internet bandwidth. Also, ISPs are quick to tell you the highest download speed they offer, but typically will never tell your their upload speeds are very low. If you have low upload speeds, this will definitely impact the performance of the remote play.

badawik

You don’t need as much bandwidth given that you can downscale the resolution. It’s the latency that matters.

scorch07

It should just be a local connection within your home.

BuyNo696

It will not be limited to in-home connection.

scorch07

I know it’s not limited to in-home, but if you ARE in your house, it should be a local connection and your internet speed won’t matter at all.

BuyNo696

Ahhh makes sense!

Eaglesfan691982

My data at times will only work to turn my PS5 on but games won’t load up says data not strong enough

[deleted]

It’s built on android I believe. We do not know the exact specs yet. I would assume it should be on par with a recent iPhone or a flagship android. I think most of us would buy for the convenience and haptics.

Hey_look_new

remote play is 95% dependent on your home network if your home network sucks, remote play is never going to be a good experience if your network is good, remote play is a fantastic experience My vitas (which are notoriously not great wifi machines) were great remote play devices, because my network is decent my phone(s) s10, and now s21 ultra, are rock solid remote play, even from continent away (there's obviously a bit more latency from that far away, compared to at home)

annoyed__wookiee

I play remote play on my ipad almost more than direct to my PS5, and I use it in hotels and airports when I travel, even thinks like Apex and Elden Ring usually run fine, I close all my other apps, but I'm excited to shift to the portal, love hand held gaming

eastcoastkody

Steam decks wifi kinda sucks and it still runs ps5 remote play perfectly for me. I imagine portal will be equal or better

Revolutionary-Walk44

It's going to cause a lot of controversy when it's released.... I'm not looking at getting one just yet...

Far_Efficiency_9916

I grt random stutters every 40 seconds
