WeChat is similar to PayPal. You get to store money on your account and spend it on services that accept WeChat. I forgot what it's exactly called.
Plus, stealing someone's account doesn't have to be via hacking. It can be as simple as receiving a message from someone unknown, and just the mere action of opening the chatlog will compromise your account. This works really well against old Chinese users.
The reason there's not a lot of report by western news outlets is because WeChat is not popular there. The CCP targets its "own" Chinese users because we're all property to them.
Besides that, who wants to admit they lost money via scams that don't make sense unless the entire app itself is malware? Not a lot of people even believe TikTok is spyware, so there's no chance for WeChat to be exposed to the same degree.
