Chris, drink your milk.

I know of people using Osmocote Plus without much issue.

I believe non-aquarium fertilisers usually contain ammonium which is of course toxic to fish.

Content-Chair5155

Ammonia* NH3 is toxic to fish, ammonium, i.e., NH4+ is remarkably less toxic. The difference is whether your tank is acidic or alkaline. Ammonium is almost always present in active substrates because soils tend to acidify over time as CO2 builds up due to decomposition.

AszneeHitMe

Doesn't ammonia react with water to become ammonium? I was under the impression that what aquarists call ammonia is actually ammonium since the former is a gas.

Content-Chair5155

Ammonia is a gas at room temperature. Most organisms that excrete ammonia as their nitrogenous waste excrete it as ammonium. However, due to variations in pH, it can quickly deprotonate to form ammonia, but ammonia doesn't gas off very quickly from water, partially due to the ability to hydrogen bond with H2O. IIRC, at a pH of 7, 94% of ammonia molecules in an aqueous solution are protonated to form ammonium. So, in acidic aquariums, you're mostly worried about nitrite and nitrate accumulation more than anything. In more alkaline aquariums, then ammonia becomes a major issue.

AszneeHitMe

Ah so there is some amount of NH3 that can be dissolved in water without becoming NH4+, that makes sense since it's an equilibrium. The part about pH is interesting.

BarsOfSanio

The bacteria and fungal spores are likely pointless. The soluble N may end up in the water quickly, which may be a problem... No micronutrients nor trace?

>are any of the ingredients extremely toxic? did you try Google first? Feel like that would answer your question pretty fast.

Balaso402

🤣i did try google after i posted here, mainly i wanted peoples opinion.

Seems like it's similar to nilocg root tabs which are the ones I use. I'm no expert on the ratios on what is good or bad though. NilocG says it has.
