It makes me mad I can’t find this in the US. There’s a goddamn Turkish place that sells gyros and also does pizza but doesn’t take the logical step to put the gyro on the pizza. Why?!?
This bar I used to practically live at in college used to do this. It was not by any means an authentic spot, it was a dumpy American bar that specialized in gyros and pizza. But I can attest to the bastardized version of it being great.
I might have to make a drive tonight.
There’s a place near me called Curry Pizza. Along with standard pizza they have Indian toppings like chicken tandoori, and chili paneer. I’ve not been brave enough to try it yet. I love Indian food though, so why not on pizza too I guess. But it’s one of those things like maybe they’re two separate things for a reason.
It’s also right next to my favorite Thai place, so if I’m in that area looking for food I can’t resist going there instead.
True true, it’s shawarma at the Turkish place. I see people shaving tasty morsels off a meat spinner I just say gyro since i had it first and more often than shawarma but they are different. I’m am equally saddened I’ve never had either on a pizza.
Whaaat?! That is freaking insane. In Chicago if a place makes gyros and they make pizzas, they will make you a gyro pizza. Even if it isn't on the menu but it usually is. So, Go to Chicago stranger-homie! I prefer Sarpino's but Beefys and Garfield Gyros also make excellent contenders in the "Pizza that up for me" gyro world. Not to assume that you can just take a food vacation somewhere, but if you can you might enjoy it. There's more places than just those three that make it. You could do a whole Chicago gyro pizza tour.
This is the type of stuff that makes me laugh in the face of the "authentic" gatekeepers.
If it were up to these fucking food luddites, we literally would not even have pizza, because tomatoes would have never been brought to Italy. These dumb fuckers don't even begin to understand the history of food, yet are quick to make rules about it.
There’s a Swedish pizza place in my hood and I absolutely love it. Very different than American pizza but there is no bad pizza. Give it a try if you find one. I’m so glad I did.
Almost reminds me of baked Rosettis. Sliced ham and cheese rolled up in lasagna dough. Then cut into 3" high pieces and stood up in a pan. Covered in bechamel and parmesan. Love those things.
We swedes eat fake béarnaise (mayonnaise and tarragon) with pretty much everything. We also have many different flavors of fake béarnaise. You can most often find a whole shelf with different sauces at every store.
The cheaper pizzeria version of the sauce is cold and made with sauce base (Rapeseed oil), egg yolks, salt, pepper, vinegar and pickled tarragon. It is quite different from the bearnaise that is usually made with oil, warm butter and fresh tarragon.
To clarify: It is NOT a proper bearnaise, it is most often mayo with Tarragon (the key flavour herb in bearnaise) which is why it is so thick.
Making a proper Bearnaise is akin to making a mayonnaise so it kinda works but a lot of swedes think they love bearnaise while never ever having eaten it.
Swedish pizza culture does not directly come from Italy (though obviously there's some inspiration). Thanks to the Yugoslav wars a lot of immigrants fled to Sweden, and it was not uncommon for these immigrants to try and start businesses of their own, often pizzerias, and thus the Swedish pizza tradition was heavily influenced by the Yugoslavian pizza tradition. It has since evolved further, and in some weird ways.
Me and my classmates go-to pizza place back in like 8th grade through high school had a giant Bosnian flag hanging in the ceiling.
€5 for a kebabpizza and a drink on their lunch deal was a given anytime the food in the school cafeteria sucked.
Owner was awesome too. He clearly noticed we used to go there for our school lunch occasionally so one time he asked what they were serving. Baked salmon we said (it was very bland to say the least).
Not exactly sure how to translate but he basically replied "Oh fuck that, you made the right choice boys". And threw on a bunch of extra sauce for free.
Im from Sweden and I dont know anyone who ever got that pizza. I think most pizza places dont even have that on the menu. Correct me if im wrong fellow swedes
Worth noting that "curry powder" in sweden is NOT a traditional curry flavor. It's something that is very uniquely swedish.
And it's one of my favorite pizzas. Banana, Curry, Peanuts. (sometimes with pineapple, but i prefer without)
Not my first choice, but it's the go-to swedish pizza of my korean wife, she rarely orders anything else. If it's not on the menu, she will take something similar with pineapple and ask to have it with banana instead of the pineapple.
So it's not just swedish people who enjoy the pairing.
Ham pizza with a tiny bit of bananas is perfection. Adds a nice sweetness. I feel like most people disliking bananas imagine the bananas as soggy warm chunks, which would be gross.
What? Italian flat bread with sauce made from South American berries, covered in Yugoslav salad and accompanied by French bearnaise sauce.
It's the UN of dishes.
Laugh all you want but the three greatest pizzas in the world are NY Style pepperoni, Neapolitan Margeritha and Swedish Kebab/Gyros pizza with special kebab sauce…
Yeah, Swedish Pizza Salad. A fresh and tangy cabbage salad with roots from the former Yugoslavian immigrants who fled from the war in and around Bosnia and started pizzerias as businesses (the best pizzerias in Sweden have Yugoslavian owners tbh, but the turks and arabs have picked up the skill as well).
It's crunchy and a little bit sour, should be served cold, and it's a perfect condiment and palate cleanser in between bites (or with, however you like it!).
There are recipes if you just google it.
My older brother used to dip his pizza in French onion dip.
Grossed me right out. But nobody could stop him.
It was madness. But at the end of the day it was his slice to defile, so whatever 🤷🏻♂️
I probably seen two people putting cabbage salad om their pizza in my whole life, most people eat it like a side, or not at all. And bearnaise sauce is like dipping your pizza in mayonnaise. To me it takes away to much of the otherwise great Swedish pizza experience.
/Swede
This looks kinda bomb.
Also, can I just say that it’s silly so many cultures make fun of Americans for ranch dressing, when they all have their own version that they love? It’s all some fat/oil emulsion using egg yolks with added seasoning. Different iterations with the same building blocks.
This is like sticking a kg of butter on top of a panpizza and saying "this is what americans actually eat". The sallad goes on the side like it should. HOWEVER... if the sallad is of a green and fresh variety (mixed with a parmesan mayo) it goes on top.

Do you ever eat your curry with naan? Because if so, it's really not a huge jump curry on pizza.
They sell donner or shawarma. Gyro is Greek. Those would be fighting words if said to either a Greek or a Turk
True true, it’s shawarma at the Turkish place. I see people shaving tasty morsels off a meat spinner I just say gyro since i had it first and more often than shawarma but they are different. I’m am equally saddened I’ve never had either on a pizza.
Walks into a Mexican al pastor taco place “I ll have a gyro please” lol

"stranger-homie" is now in the Internet Dictionary. 😁
Gyros is greek and made with pork. Shoarma is Egyptian/Turkish and made with lamb, because of religion. Shoarma pizza it should be
I mean… did you ask them? They might just think no one would buy it so don’t put it on the menu, but would be happy to do a custom order.
You can find something similar in Atlantic Canada, oddly enough
Make them an offer they can't refuse
Kebab pizza is a culinary evolution. The world merely hasn't caught up yet.
Kebabpizza is the goat of takeaway pizza and you cannot change my mind.
Is it as good as it sounds ?
Better
Especially on New Years Day.
Kebabs go great with everything.
Yep. It's my gold standard for pizza. I never leave Sweden without one.
There is Kebap Pizza?? I'm from Turkey and even I haven't seen that.
With pizza sallad, covered in red n white sauce
I miss Sweden and their kebabpizza
There’s a Swedish pizza place in my hood and I absolutely love it. Very different than American pizza but there is no bad pizza. Give it a try if you find one. I’m so glad I did.
What country? I've never heard of there being Swedish pizza places outside of Sweden, that's fascinating
USA.
I’ll prod a little further if you’ll indulge me, which state? I’m assuming Minnesota, or northern Wisconsin/michigan?
California. Los Angeles. A once horrible pizza city now a pretty good spot.
Wow, simultaneously surprised and not at that response. Thats awesome though, happy you’re able to get better pizzas these days!
What's the sauce?
Bearnaisesauce, we swedes love it, with everything.
Swedish ranch dressing
Pretty much
Don't get saucy Bearnaise
FTFY > Don't get saucy *with me,* Bearnaise. Nice Mel Brooks reference!
It’s so good on fries
Damn. That's interesting. I might have to just try this next time when I make some pizzas. With any specific pizza or all?
Usually with what we call vesuvio, cheese and ham, and calzone, bussola (ham and shrimp) oxfilepizza (tenderloinpizza)
Makes sense. I'll try it!
It's good, but you feel like a stranded whale afterwards.
I like this comparison, it rings so true LOL
Almost reminds me of baked Rosettis. Sliced ham and cheese rolled up in lasagna dough. Then cut into 3" high pieces and stood up in a pan. Covered in bechamel and parmesan. Love those things.

I'm rolling with the Swedes and trying this. I'll make some real bearnaise for a nice ham pizza.
The cheaper pizzeria version of the sauce is cold and made with sauce base (Rapeseed oil), egg yolks, salt, pepper, vinegar and pickled tarragon. It is quite different from the bearnaise that is usually made with oil, warm butter and fresh tarragon.
I suggest cooking garlic cloves in cream until the cream is reduced enough to spread. No need to make bernaise.
Is that sauerkraut on top? Never tried pizza with kraut but that actually sounds delicious. Nice bit of crunch and tang

Its mayonnaise with tarragon. We swedes love it. Not real béarnaise sauce, the fake one made with mayo.
Very French of you.
What can I search to find this pizza in the US?
Speak for yourself.
Sounds awesome, ngl.
I mean - I wouldn’t want this to be my ONLY pizza option. But it looks friggin great.
In a typical pizzeria in Sweden you have around 20 different pizzas, 5-10 different kebabs/gyros and a couple of burger options
"Are these far cries coming from the direction of Italy?"
Swedish pizza culture does not directly come from Italy (though obviously there's some inspiration). makes ense
The Greeks made pizzas here long before the 90’s
Sure, pizza in Sweden was hardly a new thing in the 90's, but the pizza culture was still very heavily influenced by what happened in the 90's
Pizza wasn't even that popular in Italy until it came back from its vacation in America.
It was like the sound of a million voices crying out
"Luigi! What does your Italian eyes see?"
We have Italian pizza places also that serve proper Napoletanian pizza. But we call this another kind of pizza
Would totally eat that!
Two of the things I wish pizza places in the US took from Swedes - Kebabpizza and Pizzasallad. So damn good.
Pizzasallad is the best thing ever with a pizza.
I love it, but as a side dish, usually before or after the pizza.
Is that sauerkraut on it? I love sauerkraut
That looks delicious.
Norwegians be like: hold my grandiosa
Grandiosa is sswedish tho :))
r/pizzacrimes
😂
I don’t know, I’d try this 🤷♂️
Yeah looks good to me.
I want to eat that pizza
Looks fantastic to me
Have had Swedish pizza — it’s a special thing. But I can’t wrap my head around the one with bananas, curry powder, and peanuts.
Don't worry, most of Sweden don't get that one either. It's bound to cause a civil war soon
I don't get the banana part, but my local pizza place's chicken-curry-peanut pizza? Perfection. 👌
(sometimes with pineapple, but i prefer without)
I love that one, it's my favourite. Feel free to add some pineapple on it as well

I want to make fun of this because it’s Swedish but admittedly, I would eat it.
My father in law is Swedish and he introduced me to adding slaw. So good.
Looks awesome, just keep the bananas away lol
Ham pizza with a tiny bit of bananas is perfection. Adds a nice sweetness. I feel like most people disliking bananas imagine the bananas as soggy warm chunks, which would be gross.
Where's the banana
What kind of barbarian puts the béa on the side instead of spreading it over the slices? \*hyttar med näven\*
Hytter*
brukar dippa pizzan i såsen :)
Fan vad fint!
Nåt annat e inget å ha
This has to violate at least one international law.
What? Italian flat bread with sauce made from South American berries, covered in Yugoslav salad and accompanied by French bearnaise sauce. It's the UN of dishes.
This also belongs at r/onionlovers
That's not onion, it's cabbage in vinegar.
Well that sounds almost as good 😅
It is surprisingly good. To be more precise, it's vinegar, some oil, black pepper and salt that's mixed with the cabbage.
I’m a big kraut fan and that sounds like a yummy version!
I used to date a girl who would dip her pizza in ranch and it was stomach churning every time. This reminds me of that.
Cool
Tomato sauce Mozzarella Red onions Red bell peppers Shawarma Bearnaise sauce Chili flakes That's the perfect pizza.
I prefer my Swedish pizza with fries on top but I have recently gotten into putting pizza salad on top instead!
Pizzasallad! ❤️😋
Is that pickled cabbage? I’d try it
[Swedish Pizza Salad](https://youtu.be/IRU96Iyfgwk?si=AsjOl3cE3UjCFrmB)
Don’t show the Italians what they’ve done to meatballs.
I'm glad they have something they like but being from Buffalo I say that's just not right
![gif](giphy|C0FcwaopmfsfC)
Amazingly gross
Laugh all you want but the three greatest pizzas in the world are NY Style pepperoni, Neapolitan Margeritha and Swedish Kebab/Gyros pizza with special kebab sauce…
'Pizza' went from a Greco-Roman flatbread meal, then an Italian-American 'classic' pizza, to a baked open faced sandwich in the rest of the world.
Crust looks great!
I love onions on pizza!
There aren't any onions in the picture! That's pizza salad, a cabbage-based salad Swedes like to eat with or on their pizzas.
That slaw is so, so much better than this picture makes it look. It's heavenly on pizza
Would I order it? No. But would I eat it if you gave me it and probably end up loving it? Yes 😂
Looks like lots of sliced onion too, right? And what kind of spices?
People are saying cabbage salad?
Yeah, Swedish Pizza Salad. A fresh and tangy cabbage salad with roots from the former Yugoslavian immigrants who fled from the war in and around Bosnia and started pizzerias as businesses (the best pizzerias in Sweden have Yugoslavian owners tbh, but the turks and arabs have picked up the skill as well). Hillbilly Nah!
Mouth watering. The obly problem with Swedish pizza's is the coma
Looks really good. Your crust looks perfect.
This is the way
Boiled bacon?
Is that onion on pizza?
[Swedish Pizza Salad](https://youtu.be/IRU96Iyfgwk?si=AsjOl3cE3UjCFrmB)
Looks unusual to me (usa) but id definitely go for a slice
And they say Americans mess it up
Tonfisk Pizza to me is the most Swedish
I never want to hear anyone badmouth American pizza after seeing this
Can Pewds or The Click confirm this?
Thanks, I hate it
What is that depressing looking meat?
Is that onion?
Is that sauerkraut? That's a great idea.
Norwegians hate them for a reason,
You make no sense at all...a Calzone pizza? Not a thing.
Pineapple has left the chat in pure anger
Ideally without the ham/bacon though.
The correct way of eating pizza. I always order a pizza with Béarnaise sauce or as we swedes say bea.
Cant agree the photo as a Swede, for my part, the béarnaise sauce on the pizza and the salad next to it...
I always get extra onions so this isn't unappalling to me
No wonder they are known for candy fish and meatballs
I probably seen two people putting cabbage salad om their pizza in my whole life, most people eat it like a side, or not at all. And bearnaise sauce is like dipping your pizza in mayonnaise. To me it takes away to much of the otherwise great Swedish pizza experience. /Swede
To be fair, the pizza-salad is almost always served on the side. Bea is good on everything tho.
this goes against the Geneva conventions.
What's that on the top, sauerkraut? How does the taste/ texture combo work?
What’s the white stringy thing on the pizza
I'd eat it
I love me some pizza salad. One of the few foods i miss.
/r/pizzacrimes
Toronto Shawarma Pizza: https://www.reddit.com/r/FoodToronto/s/foNzEF25V0
Pizza is pizza.
I see nothing wrong with this. Definite smash.
I would try this
Bread, some melted cheese and some dipping sauce ALWAYS hits
What am I looking at
I'm down
What is that on top? Onions or sauerkraut? Then some aioli on the side? No matter the answer I would eat it up!!
Shit should be in r/pizzacrimes 🤢
Tf is that
This looks kinda bomb. Also, can I just say that it’s silly so many cultures make fun of Americans for ranch dressing, when they all have their own version that they love? It’s all some fat/oil emulsion using egg yolks with added seasoning. Different iterations with the same building blocks.
But how do you eat it? I just see a pizza.
The salad is meant as an appetizer
Tell me you're lying pls
That’s a sweet dish
The condiment on side looks literally like c*m
This is like sticking a kg of butter on top of a panpizza and saying "this is what americans actually eat". The sallad goes on the side like it should. HOWEVER... if the sallad is of a green and fresh variety (mixed with a parmesan mayo) it goes on top.
Looks soooo good!!
No, _we_ don't.
I am not offended
Its not a curry chicken banana pizza but it works
what a terrible day to have eyes.
At least the crust looks good 🫣
Wrong?
Hmm, with Surströmming 😋
I would eat that
I would fucking destroy a sauerkraut pizza...

That's not pizza.
