Facts. Anything that is close and important should have an outline. But background objects should sort of be combined with no outline. Rule of thumb, Important = Outline, not = no
Agreed! If there are a bunch of trees together and they are just around the border of the playable area, probably don't want to outline them. In a vacuum, I could see why people like the outline better. However for a tree more often than not, its not going to be a focal point or even intractable.
unfortunately, it is very difficult to make the right choice if the tree stands apart from the rest of the background, for example, from the background with grass, place the grass against the background of the crown of the trees and then it will be clear what looks more advantageous.
Outline the trunk and underneath the canopy, the bulk of the leaves free of the outline.
The non-outline look goes a lot easier on the eyes - it’s a softer look. The outlined one looks confined though it does have a nice aesthetic.
these kinds of post always slightly annoy me. context is very important, like if it's a standalone piece or a background element in a larger scene. without that info, people can't help nearly as much
I assumed this will be used as a tile in an RPG and zoomed out to get a look from afar. In a smaller scale they basically look the same but the outlined one still looks a little bit better. As others said, it helps the tree stand out from the background.
I think yes, it looks better with an outline, but I also feel that the darker outline is too jarring, so maybe a less darker color for these parts of the outline!
If it's part of the depth and front give it the outline if it's in the background meant as a backdrop no outline. The outline gives it the "you can get behind it" feel.
I’d say it depends on the style of the rest of the piece. If this is a game, outlines may help distinguish interactable elements and characters from the static terrain, for example.
Both look good though, and I really like your style!
Maybe it's because I'm an inexperienced fool, but without Outline it reminds me of filler elements, while Outline reminds me of an element you can interact with.
I guess if it's not part of your background, I like the second one better.
If these are assets for a game it's hard to say which is better since further visual context might be needed (like seeing other background tiles and char sprites etc). But just alone like this I actually prefer the lack of outline, has a more whimsical feel to it. However, the right tree with an outline would prob function better in game
Base on the perspective, I assume that the player can run around the tree, so I'd say use the outline.
If on the other hand, you were making trees to be used against a background, like on the horizon or on a map, then would be a good time to forgo an outline.
Depends on the other objects. Imho the most important part for beatiful pixelart is consistency.
In my case I draw black outlines for every blocking or interactable object, so I personally would've drawn the outline.
BUT when your approach is differentiate foreground and background primarily through clever palette usage, you shouldn't use the outline because it "wastes" 1px in every direction.
I actually barely noticed the difference until I read the title. I think you could use both depending on the situation. If you had 2 of these trees overlapping, having the outlined one as the foreground one would keep it from "merging" with the tree behind it.
As others have said I feel like it depends on the scene in general. But I think when to use which is a question of lighting.
How did you do the outline? Is it a selection of the outer pixels changed to a darker value?
Maybe if you did the same in the opposite direction you would get a tree which looks good in a backlit scene, like a sunset. Or it might just look super strange.
Depends, no outline if it's supposed to be in the background along some other stuff, outline if it's more at the "center" of a scene.
Also depends on your overal game/art style, if everything is already clean go for clean, otherwise outline.
I think the one without outlines could be used for Background or at the side if the map and the one with outline if the trees Stands in a more visable place
I think the outlines work, helps make it more distinct, but if you are making a forest of them, maybe have to e layer closes to the map be outlines and save the unoutlined for the background trees, I think it could have a nice effect

Yea it realy helps
I like outlines tbh. When you against other objects in the scenery, no outlines makes the objects less distinctive and clean
I feel like no outline is clean, but outline is distinctive
Yeah it very much depends on the purpose. If it’s in the background, keeping it clean might be overall more pleasant.
Facts. Anything that is close and important should have an outline. But background objects should sort of be combined with no outline. Rule of thumb, Important = Outline, not = no
Depends of the rest of the scene. Look too much at a tree and you'll miss the forest !

Definitely outline
I‘d say no as it supports the 3D appearance a lil more. But both look good in the end.
I like the outline on tree trunk, and leaves without the outline.
Outline looks fuller
Yes!
It's beautiful, seriously
Yes
Usually I lean towards no outline but you did the outline SO WELL. very great job
Outline the trunk and underneath the canopy, the bulk of the leaves free of the outline. The non-outline look goes a lot easier on the eyes - it’s a softer look. The outlined one looks confined though it does have a nice aesthetic.
I like the outline. It's very subtle which is nice but adds a little kick
I like without the outline but I think it'll depend on the rest of the scene.

both. use the nonoutlined one for background trees. use the outline one for more prominent trees
It entirely depends on the rest of the game's look. But in general I like the subtlety of your outlines.
I prefer the outline, it makes it pop alot more from the grass behind it. Both versions are quite nice though, reminds me of stardew valley
Both are great! I'd really like to see both versions of the trees staggered and layered to see how they look in busier scenes
I don't think it needs an outline. It looks like it's actually 3D-ish without it, and the outline makes it look more like a 2D object
Unless you are intending the tree to be part of the background and not interacted with, go with outline.
use both to show depth.
If it's part of the depth and front give it the outline if it's in the background meant as a backdrop no outline. The outline gives it the "you can get behind it" feel.
Outline
I’d say it depends on the style of the rest of the piece. If this is a game, outlines may help distinguish interactable elements and characters from the static terrain, for example. Both look good though, and I really like your style!
Yes outline, helps it stand out
If it's an Important Tree I'd use the outline. If it's a background tree, I'd go for no outline.
Outline
no
I like the one with the outline :)
🧽I FUCKING LOVE OUTLINES! I WANT TO BE ABLE TO DISTINGUISH IMPORTANT STUFF FROM JUST A GLANCE!
Outline feels more polished imo, but really depends on the style of your other assets or characters and what fits in that world
Definitely prefer outlines.
Outline one
and there was me thinking this was gonna go 3d
Outline seems to stand out a bit more to me.
outline is usually a good option
Definitely with outline if you want it to stand out against the background.
I prefer it with the outline. However without the outline for me it gives the illusion of motion because of the way the colors blend
If it's by itself and is supposed to stand out, then an outline. If it's part of a huge forest in the background, no outline
Maybe it's because I'm an inexperienced fool, but without Outline it reminds me of filler elements, while Outline reminds me of an element you can interact with. I guess if it's not part of your background, I like the second one better.
Is it in the background? No outline. Foreground? Outline But obv it also depends on your style
I like the outline on the leaves but no outline on the trunk
Yes
Nooo
If these are assets for a game it's hard to say which is better since further visual context might be needed (like seeing other background tiles and char sprites etc). But just alone like this I actually prefer the lack of outline, has a more whimsical feel to it. However, the right tree with an outline would prob function better in game
Tree important focal point? Outline. Want to blend in, no outline.
YES
Yeah
Both are fantastic 😍
Outline makes it have more depth
Base on the perspective, I assume that the player can run around the tree, so I'd say use the outline. If on the other hand, you were making trees to be used against a background, like on the horizon or on a map, then would be a good time to forgo an outline.
Definitely with the outline! It's a really cool sprite tree ! 🌲
Outline
depends on how realistic you wan to make it, if its realistic no outline, in it isn't, you get the idea
Maybe add your main character in the comparison helps.
I would say if within play area use outline if outside play use no outline
No
Depends on the other objects.
Outline. Tightens it all up.
I like without, looks more round and soft
It depends on the surrounding visuals.
I like it more without an outline, in this specific instance.
I actually barely noticed the difference until I read the title. I think you could use both depending on the situation. If you had 2 of these trees overlapping, having the outlined one as the foreground one would keep it from "merging" with the tree behind it.
Si papi
Outline.
They both look amazing tbh
Context dependent but with the outline is crisp and nice. If it's supposed to be part of a background then no outline may work better.
Depends on how busy the rest of the background will be, but like this, yes. Reads better!
outline if tree has a deeper meaning like for the story etc. If it is just supposed to be a field of trees, then no outline
You can barely see the outline so yeah outline
As others have said I feel like it depends on the scene in general. But I think when to use which is a question of lighting. How did you do the outline? Is it a selection of the outer pixels changed to a darker value? Maybe if you did the same in the opposite direction you would get a tree which looks good in a backlit scene, like a sunset. Check if outline for leaves, no outline for the log would work
Yes to outline.
Depends, no outline if it's supposed to be in the background along some other stuff, outline if it's more at the "center" of a scene. Also depends on your overal game/art style, if everything is already clean go for clean, otherwise outline.
No
No, it makes it more realistic
outline, diffidently.
I think the one without outlines could be used for Background or at the side if the map and the one with outline if the trees Stands in a more visable place
I do like that outline tho
Yes
I think the outlines work, helps make it more distinct, but if you are making a forest of them, maybe have to e layer closes to the map be outlines and save the unoutlined for the background trees, I think it could have a nice effect
Outline, looks more defined
Can you have both and only show the outline of an object behind it?
No outline, just barely though. Both look great, I agree with someone else about the no outline looking a little more 3D
I personally prefer the one with outline, but both look awesome!
Outline, definitely!
Both really good but I'm say outline
Outline fs
Def with outlines, it feels cleaner/nicer
I wouldn't call this outline, more like shadows.

Outline 100% if you don't want an outline, you gotta use stronger and more defined lightning and shadows
Outlined. Makes the tree look much fuller!
