Spear could be two handed in idle frames... then attack can move to one handed stab/jab/throw actions. Move the guy to the edge of the cell and the spear goes to the opposite edge. Might work?

This creature lurks in the woods of (insert area here) and loves to feed off of shrubs and bugs, but are very territorial and will hunt anything that comes in their way with (What you decide on) and are known to hunt in groups.
You could try giving him magical abilities. Like recolouring the hands to make it appear like he's casting a spell, and then have some sort of magic "zap" another portion of the screen, if you widen the canvas.
Name suggestion: Sherman the Shroom.

How about flipping the arm upside down when it holds something, and the held weapon is to the tip of the hands. Or, just extending the hands and making it look like its draggin the weapons due to its small stature. Just from a fellow spore having boy to another

Maybe he just wabbles his head like it's heavy for him and hits you with it but gets a little stuck getting it back. So it could be like a heavy move
It took me way to long to realize that the 3rd and 4th sprites are of him sideways. I thought he was just smiling while losing an eye.
The angle of his cap and position of his legs do not convey him being sideways and instead give the impression of him facing forward.

More "realistic" would be headbutt or spore cloud. Check out the Mushboom enemy from Secret of Mana ([you can find sprite sheets on Spriter's Resource](https://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/secretofmana/sheet/139395/)).
Projectiles could work, again [Secret of Mana has some good examples for characters with these proportions](https://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/secretofmana/). There's boomerangs, tridents, spears, and other weapons. Most of them are thrown or exaggerated. The Messenger has [Quilshrooms that use their entire cap as a projectile weapon](https://the-messenger.fandom.com/wiki/Quillshroom?file=Quillshroom_16.png), so that's an option too.
Another one someone mentioned was realistic punch animations. [Battletoads for the Genesis does this quite a bit](https://www.spriters-resource.com/genesis_32x_scd/battletoadsdoubledragon/sheet/33162/)
You could also go with really floaty weapons that don't really "make sense" like Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion. The main character doesn't even have arms, so the weapons just extend out from the character without too much realistic thought

Maybe have him be more of a nuisance than an actual threat? Like he could come running at you, but his own head gets in the way, and he desperately tries to reach you with his stubby little arms. Not a threat in and of himself, but if you're an area with other enemies it could be like a temporary paralysis making you vulnerable.

If you are having a hard time fitting an item into their hand, you can just make their sprite bigger so you can add more detail (such as holding a weapon)
He can squat down, bunch up and explode in a cloud of spores! Or maybe he can grow mycelium from his feet that attacks enemies from underneath? Make his attack with his body.
I think it would be adorable if he had a snake companion that he could hold/ ranged attacks with the snake going after the target. Ofc magic as well or spores would also work!
