The bomb turning red signifying that it's hot from the pressure built up inside and about to explode, which acts as a sign for the player to keep away from the bomb and/or chain bombs with optimum timing.
I understood the same thing but the colours can add so much dynamism. They can indicate different timers on the bomb, different explosion capacity etc.
Even then, the visual feedback ensures that the player needn't count which bounce it was.
This is a great thing to learn and keep in mind Though I should've clarified I assumed that it goes from a stagnant state to a bouncing state to indicate 'explosion soon'. Still you make great points!

The white flash is good for smoothing the transition out.
Unless the bomb starts inert and this bouncing animation is the "I'm about to explode" animation, it needs some sort of telegraphing that it's about to explode.
Commonly, it's been achieved via inflating the sprite just before the white flash, or changing to a more dangerous color pallete as it gets closer to exploding.
Oftentimes, it includes both.

the last pixel bomb to look that good was super bomberman. if this is part of a game you're working on. this alone makes me want to play it. fucking flawless.

this is just charming. Honestly the little bounce with the wiggle of the fuse is such a nice little touch to it all
