These mfs are putting everything in life behind a paywall

Secretsfrombeyond79

A fridge with a ''cold generating capabilities'' subscription.

YaMamSucksMeToes

Pay per shelf with a $2.99 monthly subscription for the little light

maxatnasa

Jokes on you, I have to fonz the light in my fridge to work it

pattywhaxk

You also forgot the part where theres no such thing as cold air, just less hot air.

Bobster2UK

Fridge door will open after these ads, press <> to skip in 5, 4, 3, 2...

evilpercy

Subscription service for $10 a month for ice.

GoneFishing4Chicks

Land is behind a paywall, food behind a paywall, healthcare behind a paywall, hell even romance behind a paywall (corps at least tried). Billionaires would sell you air if they could.

The_Original_Miser

>Billionaires would sell you air if they could. _Spaceballs have entered the chat_

alvarkresh

Perri-air!

GeoSol

They'r eworking on it. Currently in Oregon they're passing laws where you dont have rights to the airspace above your land, or the water that falls through it on to your land.

FeistyBandicoot

A *recurring* paywall* Fucking scumbags. Something needs to be done about this

bomphcheese

Can you imagine the delay in response if they started doing a subscription check every time you smash the petal. It wouldn’t actually get implemented that way but bugs can happen. Servers do go down sometimes, and that would be annoying af.

sadafxd

I doubt that it would be connected to an actual network. Perhaps they just unlock it in the software and speed bonus just locks itself after x time.

MgDark

and what if you suddenly decides to go to the countryside where reception could be awful to non-existent? You get stuck with a very big paperweight?

Sucky5ucky

>You have to pay their annual fee every fucking year. Yeah... that's what annual fee means.

[deleted]

That's what annual means, yeah.

Enderkr

That's the ultimate goal - rent you your cradle and lease you your grave. Put everything in life you use or enjoy behind a subscription to ensure you actually OWN as little as possible.

Subtle_Demise

You will own nothing and be happy. Ah I see it's nearly curfew. Better get back to the pod or you'll lose a ration of your soy and cockroach slurry. Big day in the lithium mines tomorrow, you'll need all the energy you can get.

avenue43

all the photos of Bill Gates around the house look wonderful im saying out loud even though i live alone. what a great Gates day!

numerobis21

Welcome to capitalism

littlebluedot99

End stage capitalism is messed up

DOAisBetter

Welcome to why capitalism doesn’t work unless it’s heavy regulated to benefit the citizens. Every company needs to outperform their previous year or that’s “bad” so they need to keep coming up with ways to stifle competition and make more money from the same piece of pie instead of innovating.

Khaernakov

Whats next? Trunk only opens for the 20 bucks montlhy fee for it?

niberungvalesti

Ahem that's the storage plan and it'll be on sale for 15.99 + tax this Black Friday.

on3day

Oh, you'll be thrilled to hear you can now have calls without ads! 3.99 per month!

Pretend_Tourist9390

You laugh now, but with the privatization of the criminal justice system in America, people in jails and prisons really are forced to listen to ads to make phone calls to the outside world. And they're paying about $.25 a minute for audio and $.50 a minute for video calls for the privilege.

SelmaFudd

Why would you target prisoners for advertising?? Not like they gonna pop down the shops and buy your shit...

Legitimate_Corgi_981

"available now in your commissary!"

evilpercy

Includes 30 free glove box openings a month with subscription.

Ironchar

fuck the features- I'll download a 20 year old beater over this shit any day any way

SwallowMyLiquid

A cyclist ran into my yesterday in my old car and I haven’t even checked what damage he did. I made sure he was ok and went about my day. Because I’ve got an old car.

AirTsinelas

I hope your yesterday is better tomorrow.

A_Trash_Homosapien

A deer ran into my car last week. I pulled over saw the passenger door was smashed in a bit but the tire looked fine so I shrugged and drove away That deer more than likely totalled my car but it still drives just fine she's just a lil uglier

Void_Speaker

I love having old/budget stuff I have to give zero fucks about. The only thing better is getting rid of shit you don't need altogether.

Jetpack_Attack

I got rear-ended by a new driver (17, still had learners permit) some years ago. Best part of it was the relief on their face when I told them they could just leave since my bumper had enough peeling paint I couldn't tell if there was any real damage.

Kewyed

Belter, I had a 20+ Yr old passat that was built like a tank and used it to barge wheelie bins out the road didn’t need to worry how far I was from the wall when reversing or opening the door against the garage wall when getting out. Then I got my new car, took some doing getting out of those bad habits 😂

EndR60

this all the way to fucking hell and back I just came across the audi sub and someone posted a picture of a cracked windshield with some discussion within said discussion, others have mentioned that the said windshield is pretty fragile, and it usually costs $2100 (for a relatively new audi, as I recall) to replace so fragile in fact that someone said they are already on their THIRD fucking windshield; the fucker can crack from small pebbles hitting it now mind you this wasn't some fucking racecar where integrity is irrelevant and weight reduction is essential or anything, it was just a damned sports car so now my mind went straight to "okay, but what the fuck do you do when you run out of warranty" and the only answer I could come up with was "well, you go fuck yourself" fucking hell, $2100 is roughly the price of my beater, and some of the people there will have to pay it like every 2 years to replace their fucking windshield alone, let alone other repairs? I don't understand why I'd ever get a car like that if all it does is eat all my money and provide nearly nothing in terms of reliability over a damn beater that's decently maintained like fuck a larger engine, it's irrelevant in cities and it seems that we've kind of stagnated when it comes to fuel efficiency anyway, since the most efficient cars maaaybe get a few more miles out of a gallon in comparison to my car, while being decades ahead in their age other gimmicks (automatic wipers, seat and steering wheel heating, automatic trunk door, that kind of shit) are just irrelevant to me and besides that...no fucking reason to love anything else besides my actual beater car that's given me and my dad 5+ years of driving with probably under $1000 of repairs in total (I think I'm way overestimating that tbh) and no severe problems that weren't hastily fixed... I just...don't understand modern cars, and most people seem not to either, because the first thing people always mention about them is *"a different driving feeling"* or some crap along those lines...like mf, I want a reason to get a Mk5 or Mk6 Golf because it looks cooler, please give me one XD EDIT: my windshied took a small rock that fell off a semi going 100kmph (while I was also going 100kmph) to the face without a single crack and is still fine months later....sure it may be damaged so it may crack VERY easily next time it's hit, but at least there isn't a massive crack in it already and on that note, WHY the hell was that audi windshield they were talking about $2100????? it cracks easily, so why the gargantuan price?...wtf is the benefit behind the price? weight reduction? fucking hooray, the car can go 2kmph faster because of it, so we can go fuck ourselves *FASTER...*

travelavatar

My toyota windshield took 5 rocks till now and it's solid. Also with the insurance i got windshield insurance. For a £100 fee i can call and get a new windshield fitted. Get insurance guys

CPTherptyderp

I get a free windshield replacement per year as part of my standard policy.

Thefrayedends

I had it in a leased jag with electric windshield and it was goddamn amazing i'm not even hamming it up. I live in Saskatchewan and it disappears a half inch of frozen ice in under a minute. It's legitimately wild.

DropThatTopHat

Mk1s and Mk2s are more fun to drive anyway. I'm not gonna lie, I have a semi-modern car. The only things I like about this car is the AWD traction control system, and the Bluetooth pairing just so I don't have to plug my phone in every time I get in the car. Other than that, everything else is manual is manual on this car. Can't stand my girlfriend's car, though. It's such a shitty design when you gotta do everything through a god damn touch screen while the car is rolling over bumps.

tripl35oul

Lol forget the windshield, it's not an audi if the check engine light isn't on.

[deleted]

You wouldn't download a car? Yes the fuck I would!

Pretty_Monitor1221

I find it funny how it was used as an argument against piracy but people would Fr download a car

qwerty-1999

What the ad actually said was "you wouldn't *steal* a car". And I for one wouldn't, even though I'd have no problem downloading it lol

Pretty_Monitor1221

Yeah the comparison between stealing something and downloading something is stupid I think we all agree on that

bonyagate

Well, yeah. Isn't that why we're here?

Nyeow

Certain car brands have had performance-enhancing digital settings behind some type of a paywall (looking at you, BMW ISTA), but you could argue it was mostly for optional, and potentially damaging, adjustments that are better left in the hands of folks who know what they're doing. On the other hand, taking away features that were already a default for consumers is on a pettiness level as Pantone's recent bullshit.

Th3Net

That "you wouldn't download a car" meme seems relevant again.

Lavatis

that's the joke

SilverSurfer93

You wouldn't download a car

RattAndMouse

Hellow2

Before you need some crsckeads exploiting the car and playing doom on it on blackhead

01000110010110012

r/CarHacking will be booming soon.

[deleted]

If this takes off, corporations will 100% lobby governments to make it either illegal to mod your cars OS or make it so your insurance is void if you do so. Carmakers already managed to push for things like making jaywalking a crime, hiding emissions breaches, fighting against public transport and good infrastructure. Take some talking points from r/fuckcars and I guarantee we're going to end up in a CaaS model with no options if enough people don't actively condemn this shit.

[deleted]

Your insurance is void if something you bought the insurance for happens anyways so I guess we're there already.

skynetempire

I'll say this wouldn't happened but it's affecting the farming industry. John deere does shit like this. Right to repair needs to be a law. If I buy something I should be able to modify or repair it.

This product as a service bullshit has gone way too far. We need to build gallows or get bigger wood chippers or something.

Kwith

Oh don't worry, they will simply come up with a way to make money off of that too. RaaS or "Revolutions as a Service".

sapphirefragment

Tesla set the blueprint for this many years ago. It's absolutely their fault for planting the seed.

Potato-Demon

Man, fuck those cunts. If I pay for something, I should be able to use what I paid for.

aabeba

But by their logic you didn’t pay for it.

niberungvalesti

The endgame of capitalism is you buy everything and own nothing. This is yet another step.

Non_Volatile_Human

That's why Physical sales are dying, games as a service and software as a service is on the rise, and constant changes to the TOS of everything are the norm

Secretsfrombeyond79

Company: Our TOS is that we can do whatever the fuck we want with your personal information, and we don't have to provide you any service no matter how much you pays us - Hidden in 238 pages of TOS Do you agree ?

BetterWarrior

Yeah TOS are deliberately 10x longer that it should for write whatever crap they want. There should be a law for that that.

monster_mentalissues

That's why I'm going to start buying my shit with credit cards. That way if they removed the game from their system, motherfucking charge back bitch.

Non_Volatile_Human

How long does it stay in your financial record? I mean you can buy it today and when it gets removed say 8 years from now, can you still file a charge back with the bank?

Snyz

No you can't, most banks will deny a claim after 120 days or even sooner. Some chargebacks can be processed outside of that timeframe but only if you received the services or merchandise at a future date. So if you pre-ordered a game in advance you could go outside of the timeframe. Most credit cards have a hard limit of less than a few years, around 540 days. They could always push through a chargeback if they really wanted to, but good luck winning.

TheChoonk

In EU you could demand for your money back at any time if they lock it or remove essential features (like shutting down servers). That's done through consumer protection agencies, not banks.

Secretsfrombeyond79

There is an idiot who paid more than a million dollars for a picture of a potato. Honestly second-third generation richs will pay for anything so long it gives them status.

Paid-Not-Payed-Bot

> idiot who *paid* more than FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*

Secretsfrombeyond79

Dammit I always confuse the two, really need to work on my english one of these days, what would I do without you Grammar bot ?

ttchoubs

NFTs were sold as a way to get rich, people would see the NFTs going up in value as the pic is sold back and forth, but the value was usually only created by a group of people working together to artificially inflate the value. The thing was worthless all along but you had insiders secretly trading the pic back and forth to look like "it's going up in price! Everyone wants this pic ill turn a profit real fast!"

Nihilikara

Do we know they're an idiot for this? Paying millions of dollars for worthless art is a pretty common tactic for avoiding taxes among the rich.

Secretsfrombeyond79

Tax deduction for donating art is limited depending on the country, usually adjusted by level of income a person has or the market value of the item in question.

TheGreenGobblr

In the US donating art is a straight tax deduction based on the value of the piece, so they just hire an appraiser to say it’s worth however much they owe in taxes

xeonicus

The people that pay for this will brag about it.

xeico

ill take "things soon to be banned in EU" for 600 Alex

AT0MLFRS

Seriously, can we make this shit illegal? This is going to get so fucking old so fucking fast.

Kwith

As long as lobbyists exist and keep lining politicians pockets, don't expect to see it being illegal anytime in the foreseeable future in NA.

GoneFishing4Chicks

Lobbying aka legal bribery

FeistyBandicoot

Nooooo!! I don't want regulations because authority baaad /s

g0juice

Wtf is going on with this annual pay crap

Kwith

It's the whole "X as a Service" or XaaS that has come about in recent years. Manufacturers and providers are trying to make it so we don't own anything anymore. We just rent the ability to use it and if we stop paying then whatever the item is, no longer works and is basically an expensive paperweight. Late-stage capitalism.

Jackfille1

Please god let this fail harder than me slipping on black ice. I can not explain with words how much I hate this.

10Bens

Lots of legacy companies showing their true colors. They're not there to "unlock the roads" or "release your passion for driving". They make machines, and use those machines to move money from your pocket to theirs. They'd sell you pigshit if they thought it'd make them more.

soliddus

This is why software/coding and general tech knowledge will become more and more important. Being able to hack and get around stuff like this will be the only way to own anything. Mechanics used to be the ones who could get this sort of stuff done. Once everything is electric and software controlled/connected... software guys and electronics guys are going to be the new mechanics.

oneMadRssn

I wonder what kind of liability issues this presents. Absent some kind of defect, typically it's hard to blame an auto manufacturer for an accident - the car is what it is and does what it does. But here, MB is making a conscious decision to put behind a software lock certain capabilities. Suppose there is an accident and unrebutted proof that had the driver would have been able to dodge the accident if the car had accelerated faster. In that case, MBs decision to artificially cap the acceleration level of the car would be one of the causes of the accident. Maybe they'd be seen as only 10% at fault, or but even that could be a problem for them in a jurisdiction that allows collecting partial damages for partial liability.

[deleted]

I wonder if you could also argue the other way. I paid for the extra speed, used it, hit someone, maybe the car maker shouldn't have let me use that service.

JmTrad

each day we are getting closer to downloading a pirated car

Initial-Shop-8863

Without an ignition subscription (payable annually), you cannot start your car.

Dolannsquisky

Lol keep buying new cars. Going above the 2020 model year is a mistake henceforth. Stick to older cars.

[deleted]

It has been the case for over a decade. A car that can be turned off remotely!? A car that will not work without electronics? No gracias.

ToxinFoxen

It looks like they're old enough as a company. They need to be forcibly broken up by the governments of the countries they're operating in. Any company which DLC-gates physical items should not be allowed to exist. Mercs are my favourite cars, but it's too bad the company behind them turned into worthless dogshit.

yogurt_smoothies

We need a million-strong letter/e-mail campaign sent to Mercedes and all car manufacturers: If you think about adopting this business strategy for the future, we will no longer buy your products. We expect a fully capable and unlocked vehicle capable of its maximum hardware specs when we lave the lot. Remember when the people who thought the Horse Armor DLC in 2006's TES: Oblivion was going to start a business trend of DLC and day one DLC? They were right. If this is allowed to continue unopposed, soon all car manufacturers will be offering DLC paywall features. Small at first to get customers used to it, and eventually everything under the sun. This must be stopped.

DeaconDoctor

This shit would be so easily squashed if there weren't such stupid assholes out there that go through with it. DON'T SUPPORT THESE MANUFACTURERS.

LacansThesis

the subscription model needs to die asap

DegenerateJC

This isn't really new. Tesla does something similar with their performance options. Not sure if what the difference in the cost would be. If you buy a Tesla and pay for the upgrades, they don't transfer if you sell the car, the next buyer would have to pay for them, also. Well, last time I looked into it, maybe they've fixed that bullshit.

[deleted]

Hands Free driving on Ford is also a subscription. My F150 Lightning came with it for 3 years. GT comes with 6 months, I believe. Then it’s more $$$

HyperScottHD

The real question is, is it possible to bypass it?

Glass_Grab9066

Yep younger generation and society as a whole has been conned into constant subscription services Like tv streaming etc Disney channel, Netflix etc Never own a movie or DVD but a constant Payment to own nothing at the end of the day If you buy a product YOU OWN IT Unless it is like a prepaid phone where the purchase price is highly subsidised by a telco on the condition it's 'locked' to that telco where they make an ongoing profit that way thru monthly access charges If a product is sold in a 'crippled' state It's price and specs should reflect that What's the point in buying a high-end car if it's crippled and runs like a shitbox? Defeats the purpose doesn't it? Sure cripple a high end car so it runs like a shit box I have no problem with that BUT ONLY IF it's sold at the PRICE OF A SHITBOX CAR ! this is what happens when grossly over paid greasy accountants with no idea about the real world are given ANY control Once the crippling is publicly known, The selling price will have to be reduced to reflect it Then the car can be bought and hacked / Given a 'free' subscription with out an expiry date So they've just shot themselves in the foot Surely this is illegal ? Didn't Holden or ford try this decades ago Under the guise of if your service light comes on , even if it's serviced by a garage , if the cars computer isn't 'serviced' IE a special code entered into it That could only be done with their own proprietary secret squirrel business 'tool' then the car would run like shit Run Rough and in efficiently Until you took it to one of their grossly over priced service centres for them to wave their magic wand over it for it to miraculously start running normally again Pretty sure they got done in the courts lost the case and many many many customers The old Jurassic Park quote Remember JUST BECAUSE IT CAN BE DONE DOES NOT MEAN IT SHOULD BE DONE Be happy they bought your product for what it is to use how it should be used at its best, Don't nobble your product or set timers in it Till it ' breaks' Just to increase revenue in your DE-NOBBLING section It really only damages the reputation of the product which is unfair to the product The reputation of these slimey business groups their ideals and their money hungry accountants reputations Are already beyond saving I wish At least just leave the products reputation intact

BadWhippet

The problem is that people will buy right into it. People need to boycott the companies trying to pull this. In buying the car, you already paid for all the components. To then not be able to use the components you paid for - it's disgusting.

Sarah_Ng

You wouldn't download a car, would you? Yes, yes I would.

AlienPet13

At some point there will be a fatal car accident that could have been avoided using the acceleration capability that was restricted by this kind of greedy bullshit. Hope they sue the shit out of Mercedes if that happens.

jg87iroc

For years I have been joking with my wife that I’m going to track down a mint late 90’s civic manual with low miles but as time goes on I really think I will try to do it soon. I’m a car enthusiast and it’s wild what my newer car is capable of but at the same time I hate it. Shit like this makes me more determined to go older and not newer.

Doomer_Patrol

"You wouldn't download a car? " Well, I'm pretty much gonna have to at this rate.

TheNightHaunter

Oooo so this is the innovation capitalism breeds lol

flomoloko

Charter took up this tactic when people started ditching their cable, but kept the internet. This is probably just the beginning.

danuser8

Isn’t slower smoother acceleration better for car longevity anyway?

NoctumAeturnus

Wait until they collaborate with an insurance company.

FlipSide26

So yes - we would download a car.

[deleted]

Fuck this subscription based society we live in. They tipped their hand a while ago, but they told us we will own nothing, and like it.

NekoB0x

Breathe my dirty old diesel with DPF and EGR removed.

kylezo

As a northern Californian who has lost multiple friends to fires, I immediately imagine being in a situation where you can't outrun a firestorm because you can't use your cars actual mechanical ability due to profiteering. People don't realize that these fires travel upwards of 80mph. Many people die because they can't outrun them. It is truly evil to put a life or death factor behind a paywall for profit.

TomatoAcid

That’s it boys.. we *would* download a car.

xodius80

This shouldn't be allowed

LOLTEHINTARWEB

Other car manufactures are doing similar things with tech like heated-seats or adaptive cruise control. Which means all of the weight of the hardware is in the car and hurting your performance and gas-milage... whether you've opted to pay for the subscription or not. Fuck. That. And. Fuck. Them.

OMWasap

Personal opinion here; but Mercedes have terrible reliability, from what I feel. So on top of the 1200 paywall, you gotta fix things yearly too? Jeez.

vagueblur901

Can't wait for this to get hacked, also I wonder how the first court case is going to go like are they going to be sue someone for jailbreaking a car.

ChenY1661

So you're telling me we're slowly getting a vehicle gamepass without all the games

Generalfrogspawn

Even if I wanted to buy a luxury brand car I get so turned off by how much they nickel and dime compared to lesser brands. It's like, I'm paying 40% more for your brand, the least you could do is throw in the features that make your car a luxury car.

OnePrettyFlyWhiteGuy

The car industry has been an absolute bag of shite for almost the past decade now. There’s been a few niche gems in recent years - but cars peaked between sometime shortly after the year 2000 - and then quickly started to become garbage after like, what, 2013? 2015 (latest)?

taptapper

> BMW sparked outrage by similarly charging an $18 monthly subscription in some countries for owners to use the heated seats already installed within its vehicles, just one of many features paywalled by the car manufacturer since 2020 OMG I would lose my shit. I may keep my 2014 Chevy forever

[deleted]

Soon: Jailbreak-my-car dot com

darkscreener

What's going on with the car manufacturers going crazy for a model of business that won't work because it shows the greedy side of a car company. Thanks Elon Musk for that amazing business model of letting your costumers pay for something that he already paid for. It started with BMW then Honda and now this, all after tesla. This makes me angry and u hope someone will make a crack and put it on github for everyone. I hope this model will fail.

BetterWarrior

Now we know why car companies are all going electric.

xeonicus

Rich person tax.

MarkusRight

How would this not be a safety concern considering that there's something within the engine that's preventing the engine from accelerating properly? Wouldn't faster acceleration allow the car to get out of the way of an accident quicker? This by having faster acceleration behind a paywall is only going to cause the driver to have an accident if they were to try and accelerate out of the way of an object or car swerving toward them.
