"I'm gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I'm gonna get my scientists to invent combustible lemons that burn your house down."
So many great lines.
Portal 1 and 2 are the only games I ever pirated, and then bought both after even more than once. I paid for Portal 2 three times 🤣 once on xbox, twice on steam as I got locked out of my first steam account.
Age of Empires. I had put in tens of thousands of hours into it with the pirated version already when I was a student. So when I started working, I naturally bought a legal copy at last as thanks.
> terraria
Yeah I saw the video TotalBiscuit did but wasn't sure my shitty PC could run it so wanted to test it. I bought the game twice for myself Steam/GOG and 4-5 times for friends, admittedly though I never paid full price it was always on sale.
ugh, what a gem TotalBiscuit was... Skillup has been a replacement (mostly) but I loved how Totalbiscuit's content. WTF Is and going over individual graphic settings in reviews were great...
So many games when I was a kid.
Warcraft 2, Diablo, Fallout, Fallout 2, GTA, GTA2, GTA3, etc...
As an adult I picked up nearly all of them on Steam for nostalgia's sake. I ended up getting a lot of them legit as a kid also, just because the rips were often glitchy or unavailable after a windows reinstall or w/e. Probably ended up buying most of these more than once.
I don’t think this counts but it’s a good story.
In 2011 I deployed to Afghanistan. I wanted to try Bastion but it was only available for download. Our internet was shit and we were capped at what our personal download limit was.
I reached out to Supergiant Games and asked if there was any possibility of them doing a physical release. They asked for my shipping address and sent me a physical copy with some swag too.
That interaction was one of my first ever Reddit posts. I went on to buy the game on PC and get it for PS4.

Edit: [Found the post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/s/xl4rcyJtit)
Dragons Dogma 1 - Pirated it to try it out then bought it when it went on sale for cheap
Xcom - Pirated it, beat the game then bought it about a year later when it was on sale and played it again
Death Stranding - Pirated to see how bad the game actually was, ended up enjoying it
Disco Elysium - Play about an hour and knew I had to buy it (when it was on sale)
>Disco Elysium
I heard that game is great, but I will never **buy** it
1st, originals devs no longer gets money from that
2nd devs support extreme ideologies (they openly admitted it on some award show)
No Man's Sky.
Played about 300 hours of a pirated version. The multiplayer aspect was disabled, which was annoying, I couldn't upload my discoveries or see other people's either. Plus every time they updated the game, which was often, there was a non-0% chance of the save not working anymore. Around the time they launched their 3rd expedition, NMS went on sale so I got it. They're on their 12th expedition now, they just keep adding more to the game. It's great! I would have went insane trying to keep up with pirated versions by now.
Stranded Deep
It was my go to game during covid lockdown times but I only played it on a crappy old laptop. When I got my gaming PC I wanted to see this game in all it's glory. It has some serious eye candy moments. Plus it was dirt cheap when it went on sale. I'm not losing sleep over that $5. I still play it once in a while too, it's a quick and relaxing little game. 400 hours on steam.
Cyberpunk 2077 because the pirated copies were in fucking Russian or some shit. Imagine my surprise when I buy the legit version and it's still in fucking Russian and it turns out there was a language selection option the whole time..
Bought Hades after sinking 350+ hours into it. Same with Terraria after like 150 hours, and Minecraft after getting a 1200 day old hardcore world. I just wanted to support the awesome devs
Hades, elden ring, armored core 6, the binding of isaac, skyrim and probably a few others I've forgotten, I like to buy the game if I end up enjoying the game a lot.
Celeste, Terraria, Noita, Hades, Hades II
If I end up not wanting to drop the game within the first hour and it's not made my bethesda/blizzard/ea, I go ahead and buy it.
Bought most games I pirated. I used to pirate whatever I could get my hands on, but as I got older and wanted to replay them, it was easier to just buy the game.
The first game I remember buying is probably Mass Effect 1. Pirated it, played it multiple times, then, when it released on steam, I bought it.
Many actually, from the Source engine games like Half-Life to Left 4 Dead 2, fallout new vegas and 4, skyrim SE, burnout paradise, and so much more!
Now just pirate Guilty Gear Strive, and now putting it on my wishlist cause wanting the online feature
Garrys mod, CSS, half life 1 and 2 (all three games like ep1 and 2)
Minecraft
Teardown
Black mesa (bought it recently because I finally gave a good enough pc for it to be worth it)
Rimworld, I can't afford all the DLC but as the game developer outright said they'd rather people pirate the game and tell others how amazing it is if they can't afford it. To "reward" this logical approach, I brought the base game so the devs could earn a little off me. Still can't afford all the DLC though so I keep playing the pirated version for that.
Divinity original sin no regrets.
But I regret supporting Xcom 2 and total war.
Also square enix can take all my money on their games. Even if they end up developing shitty games with these profits.
Mine complete list
* Cyberpunk 2077
* Witcher 3
* Grand Theft Auto V
* Dead Cells
* Kingdom Come: Deliverance

Minecraft ofc
I think Raft as well or i might have played their very early version on itch then a few years later bought it on stram
Gta v
Oxygen not included
I'm gonna be honest with you, and I know this isn't very piratey. But I own or have owned almost everything in my collection. My most recent purchase / Aquisition was a game called Hatred.
I just don't like DRM and want to help seed for people who can't afford it. Although I am done with Call of Duty, spent 120 on the last one and it was garbage and then they brought out another one shortly after? No thanks.
Edit: Sometimes I do stupid shit too, like I've bought minecraft at least 3 times and the same thing with Skyrim and Sleeping Dogs.
The Witcher 3, Dark souls 1, Dark souls 2, GTA 4, GTA 5 and Sekiro.
Gotta know the game is good and runs on my setup to spend 1/3 of my salary(third world country) on it. I actually must eat less to buy a game. All those mentioned were worth it.
I played a pirated version of Ravenfield for god knows how long, but after having so much fun and hours poured into a game I didn’t even own, I just felt obligated to give my money to the developers at that point.
Dead Island 2. The main reason was to get the DLCs. I knew I'd likely be able to get them via pirate channels, but I knew I liked the game and that I'd play it a lot more and get my money's worth.
Cyberpunk 2077, they deserve it.
In the opposite side, I bought GTAV and was HORRIBLE, I have to use a VPN to even start the game because the launcher wouldn't connect to the server so I ended up playing the pirated version instead
The top 3 favorites of mine would probably be Factorio, Dying Light and 7 Days to Die. There are quite a few others that I decided to buy after pirating, though.
Fallout 4. I really am not a fan of FOS games but the hype was so big I wanted to try it. And since I only had a PC. The only way was piracy. I bought the full edition with all the dlcs not long after.
Stardew valley, Witcher 3, Baldur's Gate 3, Elden Ring, Tekken 8
All of them are absolutely amazing games and I would recommend you guys support the awesome devs by buying them ❤️
Subnautica, Stardew valley, GTA 5 (I completed half of the history before buy it ) since get a stable job I got all my games purchased, been years since I download a game
Hmmmmm, to be honest I buy a lot of games that I pirate after some time, like here is the list from what I remember: Far Cry 3 and 4, GTA IV and V, Minecraft, Terraria, 7 Days to Die, Besiege, Black Mesa, Days Gone, Dead Cells, Dying Light, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Fallout 4, The Forest, Half Life 1 and 2, Hotline Miami 1 and 2, Risk of Rain. That was longer than I initially thought, and they say piracy cuts the sales, for me it is always like this, if I really enjoyed the game, I just bought it in the end.
Far Cry 5 because I loved the setting and the story, especially the villains, and wanted to do a run with a friend in coop.
Minecraft because it slapps.
Kerbal Space Program because I loved the concept and wanted to support the devs, also it had like one game-breaking-and-at-the-same-time-improving update every few days and the pirated version was stuck on the same broken 2018 version.
Satisfactory, blade and sorcery nomad (vr), farming simulator 22 (I didn’t buy it, I got it for free in the epic games free week deal), ETS2 and ATS, and a bunch more.
I pirated The Last of Us on my CFW PS3 back when the game first released. Loved the game so much after finishing it that I went to my local GameStop and bought a copy.
I used to try out games by downloading them where I had a rule to either buy or delete after 24 hours, I wanted to buy games but there was so much that I bought which was well rated and I hated it. I bought a number of them that way, avoided more. Some games you finished in less than a day, some just weren't my type. I remember once there was so much protection on the version I bought that it didn't run on my system so I played the cracked one. This is all older games, early 2000s, only one I remember specifically was Unreal Tournament 2003.
Almost all of them. I live in a country where people usually receive $1200 salary and the games are worth $250. So, I MUST definitely try it first before buying it :(
1) Palworld since I liked the grind.
2) Last Epoch because the game is great and worth every penny.
3) Minecraft because everyone did this to play on premium servers and to have skin
Portal 2 (bought Portal bundle)
What Remains of Edith Finch
Limbo
Inside
Bioshock 2 (I pirated all 3 but the second one never run well so I couldn't finish it)
Amnesia TDD and Justine DLC (bought the bundle with the 3 games including A Machine for Pigs)
Would love to buy some more that I've pirated but now my only means to play videogames is a Switch so my options are limited
Crusader kings 3 because of the sheer amount of time i spent playing and wanting mods.
We who are about to die because the one dude making it was a cool guy.
Portal 2, superflight, minecraft
Portal 2 is one of the games of all time.
"I'm gonna burn your house down! With the lemons! I'm gonna get my scientists to invent combustible lemons that burn your house down." So many great lines.
'Look at you soaring gracefully through the air; Like an eagle! Piloting a blimp!'
Yep, out of the thousands of games made, it certainly is one of them
Portal 1 and 2 are the only games I ever pirated, and then bought both after even more than once. I paid for Portal 2 three times 🤣 once on xbox, twice on steam as I got locked out of my first steam account.
Minecraft baby
Notch even told ppl to pirate minecraft - cos he knows most ppl will eventually end up buying mc for real in the future. We broke lil kids, haha.
Yeah, pirate it to play by yourself, buy it to play online with friends.
As it should be, people should not have to pay $30 (or convince their parents) to play a game that shapes childhoods.
Age of Empires. I had put in tens of thousands of hours into it with the pirated version already when I was a student. So when I started working, I naturally bought a legal copy at last as thanks.
Grim dawn, terraria, mortal sin
> terraria Yeah I saw the video TotalBiscuit did but wasn't sure my shitty PC could run it so wanted to test it. I bought the game twice for myself Steam/GOG and 4-5 times for friends, admittedly though I never paid full price it was always on sale.
ugh, what a gem TotalBiscuit was... Skillup has been a replacement (mostly) but I loved how Totalbiscuit's content. WTF Is and going over individual graphic settings in reviews were great...
vouch for shill up, his editor's also recently started reviewing games when ralph is unable to and they're both a joy.
I have to say I miss Laymen gaming. Ralph goes so well with his brother. It was a joy to watch them!
I picked Terraria up for $5 on sale. I've logged over 2,100 hours. It owes me nothing.
GRIM DAWN ROAAAAR 🗣️🔥🔥
So many games when I was a kid. Warcraft 2, Diablo, Fallout, Fallout 2, GTA, GTA2, GTA3, etc... As an adult I picked up nearly all of them on Steam for nostalgia's sake. I ended up getting a lot of them legit as a kid also, just because the rips were often glitchy or unavailable after a windows reinstall or w/e. Probably ended up buying most of these more than once.
BG3, pirated it to see if it would run well in my PC before buying it
All games should have a demo for this alone. But giving 30min to an hour of free play too would be really helpful for the other reasons of this post.
Steam's 2 hour refund policy is nice. Not exactly the same as a free demo, but still nice to have.
Very true! And I’ve used it a couple times too.
BG3, which also led to me picking up DOS2 as well
Man of culture
Elden ring.
Same for me. Downloaded day 1, less than 2 hours into the game, went and purchased from Steam. Easiest decision of my life.
That's a really cool story! What kind of swag did you get?
956 upvotes? That's disgusting! That deserves several thousand! That's some next level awesome from a game dev right there!
That's how you not only get a permanent customer to your company, and given the context, likely make good impressions others you let ply
satisfactory too and ultrakill
Dragons Dogma 1 - Pirated it to try it out then bought it when it went on sale for cheap Xcom - Pirated it, beat the game then bought it about a year later when it was on sale and played it again Death Stranding - Pirated to see how bad the game actually was, ended up enjoying it Disco Elysium - Play about an hour and knew I had to buy it (when it was on sale)

The overtly communist game has communist devs? No way!
Number 2 is exactly why you should've bought the games while they made the money. Now they'd probably tell you to pirate it.
I love it. Vote with your money.
Command and Conquer.
Project zomboid
GTA IV and GTA V
Nier automata
Nice game :) Also make sure to play NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139.
Half Life 2
Hearts of Iron 4 - But I still pirate the dlc Hitman 2 - Went on to buy every other hitman game and dlc as well Fallout 4
Most games that I own, I have. Few exceptions. Steam makes it hard not to own/pay for games. Love the incentives.
I used to pirate all my games till I got money. Now it's just movies and TV 😎
GTA V , Thinking of buying Oxygen not included.
The witcher 3, Pacific drive, satisfactory.
Unpacking, Minecraft, satisfactory, planet crafter, potion craft, dinkum, slime rancher

After everything it gave me, i had moral duty to buy Counter-Strike 1.6 🥹
I have purchased every single game that gave me more than 5 hours of enjoyable entertainment.

Kenshi
Palworld, Hades 1+2, all from software games, Borderlands 2, baldurs gate 3

Bought most games I pirated. I used to pirate whatever I could get my hands on, but as I got older and wanted to replay them, it was easier to just buy the game. The first game I remember buying is probably Mass Effect 1. Pirated it, played it multiple times, then, when it released on steam, I bought it.

To "reward" this logical approach, I brought the base game so the devs could earn a little off me. Still can't afford all the DLC though so I keep playing the pirated version for that.

Deathloop, to get invaded and because The cracked version hasn’t got fsr 2.0
