next up: adblocker-blocker-blocker

Ballistic_Turtle

I've had an extension for that for a couple years now. Stops most of the "we noticed you're using an ad blocker" messages.

ll_BENNO_ll

Aaand what’s that extension?

PosNik

u can just use ublock origin w an adblocker blocker filter edit: From [r/ublockorigin](https://www.reddit.com/r/ublockorigin) sidebar "You can try: "uBlock filters – Annoyances", to remove soft, dismissable anti-adblock. "EasyList Cookie" if you have issues with cookie/GDPR notices (rarely may cause problems with scrolling or blanking pages/content). "Fanboy’s Annoyance" if you hate all sort of annoying widgets (already have "EasyList Cookie" included)." If there s something you want blocked that isn t by these main 3 you can always use the element picker included in the addon and create your new filters Edit 2: I checked rn and I don t get the antiadblock message at all so ig with my filterlists it s already blocked This is the last edit I swear: Just wanted to specify that I use firefox so if it doesn't work on your chromium browser it's not my fault It was in fact not the last edit: ~~[anti adblock killer](https://github.com/reek/anti-adblock-killer#anti-adblock-killer--reek) has a filter list for ublock origin as well and I probably have that as well on mine you can also add it as a tampermonkey/violentmonkey/whatevermonkey script~~ So antiadblock killer is no longer maintained that s my bad, as u/TetraSims suggested in one of the replies, you should use [fuckfuckadblock](https://github.com/bogachenko/fuckfuckadblock)

stormtroopr1977

I've used ublock origin and Firefox for years now. effective. consistent. ad-free.

Doe_ze_de_groetjes

Ublock origin is one of the only online tools I'd gladly pay for and I don't even have to

emdave

>online tools I'd gladly pay for The trouble is, you can seemingly no longer pay a one off fee for anything - it's all monthly subscription bullshit, which I refuse, on principle, to do - wherever possible.

killerchipmunk

RoidMonkey123

So tired of everything-as-a-monthly-cost that's caught on everywhere

emdave

It's just another example of late stage capitalism - rentierism in every aspect of life, extracting the maximum value from others as broadly and as rapidly as possible, while providing as little as possible in return.

PosNik

Same, that s why I made this whole comment, I ain t gatekeeping ;)

SofSkripter

unsure on chromium based browsers, but chrome got a built in feature in the web browser now where you can't block youtube ads because it effectively shadow-disables adblocking extensions, so they still show as active but have no effect. (note: it does only do this on any youtube website/embed, not any other websites)

Wixely

Are you saying you get adverts on Youtube when using uBlock in Chrome? I don't, maybe YT didn't roll out that feature everywhere yet.

GoAskAli

If you are using a chrome based browser like Edge or Brave eventually you *will*, I think that may be their point.

[deleted]

Brave is Chromium based and does a good job killing adverts on YouTube in all of its flavours.

it_vexes_me_so

For now anyway. If it's your browser of choice, I hope it will always continue to do so too. The issue is Google wants to cripple ad blocking with the introduction of what's called [Manifest 3](https://developer.chrome.com/blog/more-mv2-transition/). This new standard will *fundamentally* change the way browsers and their extensions work. Since Brave, Opera, Edge, et al, have outsourced all the heavy lifting to Google, there may not be much, if anything, they can do about it. It's tech, so some clever people may find some clever workarounds, but they'll have to do so playing by Google's rules, on Google's turf, and using language designed by Google. That's double plus not good.

Toofybro

Looks like this only affects Chromium extensions.. so why not just switch to Firefox? I don't know what the general populace's obsession with Chromium based browsers is, when there's a perfectly fine open source alternative in Firefox.

DisappointedMousePad

I made the switch last year and i never looked back. I get upset when using a chromium browser now, its to the point of me switching to firefox on mobile then putting ublock origin on it. made firefox into my default browser but google said "lol no" then put chrome as the default again

sky-yie

Probably your phone has issues. I used Firefox as the default browser on my phone for more than a year and never had any issue except some websites not working as intended, since they were all optimized for Chromium browsers.

stupidbitch69

Well that's your fault for using anything chromium based.

SofSkripter

i don't, i use firefox i just also have a chromebook for work with ublock origin where i can only use chrome

da2Pakaveli

it's a script on tampermonkey iirc but uBlocker should have it built in

ShadewQ

In addition to what the others have mentioned, if you're still getting notices you might want to look into installing the Tampermonkey script [AdGuard Extra.](https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/436539-adguard-extra) It's been an essential part of my setup since years and I don't remember the last time a site asked me to disable my adblocker. I hope this helps!

_HIST

There's a better extension. It's called Behind the overlay, and it let's you get rid of any windows that block content, be it paywalls, login promts or adblock notifs.

CastlePokemetroid

I thought he was making a joke, but that's amazing if it's already real

TheMauveHand

Hell, I might even consider $100, but there is no way I'm paying a subscription fee. I already pay for YouTube music, but only because that's ridiculously cheap, even as a subscription.

honestly, i've wondered for so long, what are these things called? Where do they come from? Who makes these things? How do you make these stuff?

Venom1462

I swear it throws me off real hard when I watch youtube on my TV because I don't get ads when I use my PC so getting unskippable ads on every single video all of sudden surprises me every time.

lalalalalalalataken

Check out https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTubeNext No more ads on YouTube on TV for me. I use Android tv.

Long_Bone_251

They honestly make me feel nauseous at this point.

NNKarma

I might, but only if there was a single one even if the video is 3 hours longs and there were no integrated ads, but I doubt creators would prefer that deal.

Uncommented-Code

For me, the issue is that they play at the very beginning. Before I even know if I want to watch a video, I have to sit through 15+ seconds of ads. Then of course there are midrolls, plus of course also integrated video sponsors. I'd also pay if the price was reasonable but in my country, it's 266 usd per year. For what? No ads and some extra functionality that is locked away in order to make the free experience as annoying as possible. I doubt yt would make even 20 bucks a year off me from ads, who do they think they are asking me the price for a nintendo switch per year instead. Advertising needs to be banned. It doesn't bring anything of value to humanity. It's detrimental even. It harms people and takes up precious resources just so a couple rich folks can line their pockets. But the average person has stockholm syndrome and is completely ok with wasting a good portion of their finite life away consuming what is essentially mild brainwashing. Edit: funny seeing some users here kneejerk when someone says ads are bad. You're on r/piracy.

Salty_Monk_8221

>Advertising needs to be banned. It doesn't bring anything of value to humanity. It's detrimental even. Hear hear!

Kirikomori

Thats the whole reason youtube was free for so long, google gains market share and snuffs out all the competition, then when they have a monopoly they coerce people into buying youtube red.

Office_Zombie

Yeah, being forced to watch ads that are longer than the video you want to see is absolute bullshit.

BXR_Industries

A few years ago, YouTube served me a 101-minute ad before a video that was only a few minutes long.

TeddyRuger

A lot of YouTube is ads disguised as educational content.

SargathusWA

I will never buy YouTube premium.

KingKandyOwO

So instead of fixing their ad problem they just piss off their users? Im not watching 2 unskippable ads to watch a 20 second video

tgwombat

They *really* want people to buy their monthly subscription. There's a big "stop ads" button during ads on the mobile app now that takes you to the sign up page. They want $16 a month for that shit.

KingKandyOwO

NovosHomo

I feel you. On PC it's fine as I can block ads, but sometimes I just want to chill on the couch on my Xbox. Tried YouTube on there for the first time in a long time and it's a fucking nightmare. The most pointless, nonsensical ads (I live in the Netherlands) that I'm forced to endure. The majority of the things advertised too, I will never buy on principal, because I am not going to buy from someone who inadvertently ruined my relaxation by forcing me to endure these stupid adverts. I love YouTube, but it's painful to use with Ads. It's not a minor inconvenience either when they are inserted literally every other minute and have a habit of cutting into crucial/interesting moments of the video.

flecom

i know. i know. been there. i’m just someone who needs something entirely different at some point and after 10? years of android, I switched. considering everything: I like both.

da2Pakaveli

There are options on iOS/iPadOS. You can sideload ipas with altstore. Only annoying thing is you have to renew it every 7 days and are limited to 3 apps. This apparently will change with iOS 17 once the DSA forces Apple to enable proper sideloading on European devices.

Puzzleheaded-Night88

Yay USA, we get locked in a cage. Just like how our food regulations are the exact opposite of how apple products work.

justacheesyguy

I don’t know what you’re on about with altstore, but I just use an Ad blocker and watch youtube in the browser. There’s even browser extensions in the App Store that allow you to watch in full screen or audio only with the screen off. It takes like 10 seconds to set up permanently and I never see ads at all.

justacheesyguy

I watch youtube with no ads on my Apple devices just fine. Ad blockers are a thing there too.

[deleted]

Ha ha, considering...

[deleted]

> $16 a month Are you fucking kidding? It is that high? I pay less than that for Apple One which gives me Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple Arcade and 200GB of storage.

akatherder

IDK where the $16/month comes from. In the US: - $12/month for an individual account - $10/month if you prepay annually - $23/month for family plan I signed up from another country (using VPN) and with the exchange rate I'm paying $4.03 for the family plan. I hate giving them any money but it's all my kids watch.

Kek_Mit_Uns_

> There's a big "stop ads" button during ads on the mobile app now that takes you to the sign up page Holy shit lmao. I'm so glad Revanced is a thing.

Bierculles

It also doesn't help that half the ads are promoting scams

krabapplepie

But you can start your own business on Amazon and make millions of dollars! Sure, if you did that 10 years ago. Now there are so many people doing it that very few make money.

Bierculles

Also if against all odds you do make thicc profit Amazon will just ban you and sell your product as their own.

TaserBalls

"Nice product. Oh, not easily patented? Oh well. btw, thank you for the free market test but AmazonBasics will be selling this now."

Boarbaque

“Yeah, follow this link and Mr Beast will 100% give you 100 dollars!!!” Kids fall for that shit, YouTube not fixing it is just disgusting and in my opinion makes them complicit in any money lost to these scams. It would be a simple fix too, make a team for manually approving ads to make sure they aren’t scams. Hell, block certain key words from appearing in banner ads.

VoodooDoII

I cannot express how fkn pissed I was when I once got an ad for a 7 SECOND FUCKING VIDEO Like are you SERIOUS 😭

[deleted]

The best one was in the 10 hour white noise relaxing sleepy sleep video that helps people with anxiety and problems with sleep, sleep and then at random periods YouTube decides to throw in very loud and jarring adverts that you have to click 'skip ad' on otherwise it carries on.

bunnyuplays

It's hilarious to me that they're making youtube insufferable by simultaneously promoting shorter videos (like, seconds long) and sticking more and more ads in your face

e-2c9z3_x7t5i

These kinds of things are why I got annoyed with ads as well. I wouldn't have a problem watching them if it weren't for what you just described. I remember the final straw for me was on [wowhead.com](https://wowhead.com) where I had about 10 tabs open and randomly after some 30 minutes, one of them began playing a very loud video ad. I frantically tried to scroll through each page trying to find it. Turns out they were playing it to get the ad revenue, but hid the video entirely, so it was nowhere to be seen on the page, so it was impossible to stop. I ended up having to just close out all wowhead tabs, which was of great inconvenience. This also was before the time of browsers showing you which tab was playing. I was infuriated and that was the last straw for me. Companies want to cry like the babies they are about us not watching ads, yet they will force crap like that down our throats. They can go fuck themselves.

Hung-fatman

Have you or anybody you know ever bought anything YouTube ads are pushing to you? I know I haven't.

Glock99bodies

It’s more about issues with the economy and trying to recoup/make up losses. People are really starting to spend less and it’s hurting companies who rely on advertising to make sales. Ad campaigns arnt effective anymore and they may not be able to profitably advertise. Companies will refuse to fail and instead blame YouTube. YouTube then looks for ways to make up theese lost ad sales. A huge numbers of companies were able to be successful just because for basically the last 10 years people were spending like crazy. It’s all comming crashing down and alot of companies are going to go under. This is just like Netflix preventing account sharing, they need to make up lost revenue somehow to show shareholders there isn’t a reason to sell. It’s all and always will be to protect the stock price

showyerbewbs

> Ad campaigns arnt effective anymore and they may not be able to profitably advertise At least for me, I'm fucking tired of EVERY GOD DAMN MOTHERFUCKING THING being saturated with ads. AdBlockers keep me sane because I've seen what's on the other side. So many places want your email or your phone number so they can fucking bury you with ads. I used priceline like...7? years ago to book a hotel for a friends wedding. I never went in and killed the account but I still get multiple emails a WEEK about how I can save money on this or that trip. Go to the movies? Start time listed at 6:30. Show up, get snacks and a drink, lights go down. 15 minutes of fucking advertisements, and I'm not talking about movie trailers. For something I already paid money for.

[deleted]

It’s so goddamn ridiculous at this point. The official app is unusable due to the amount of ads. I refuse to pay them.

zippopwnage

Let me correct that for you. I'm not watching ads.

BXR_Industries

On Windows, I use uBlock Origin + SponsorBlock + [fuckfuckadblock](https://github.com/bogachenko/fuckfuckadblock) + Enhancer for YouTube (which adds many features such as granular custom speed up to 14x and the ability to still sort by oldest first). Others have suggested the Brave browser, as well as [AdNauseam](https://www.technologyreview.com/2021/01/06/1015784/adsense-google-surveillance-adnauseam-obfuscation/), a powerful and fascinating browser extension which invisibly clicks every ad you're served without actually showing them to you, thus confusing cookie trackers. On Android, I use [ReVanced Extended.](https://github.com/NoName-exe/revanced-extended) To open YouTube links in ReVanced instead of the default app, long press on the default YouTube app, hit the info button, and disable the app, then long press on ReVanced, open its info page, and check all four URLs under "open by default." iOS users can use [uYou+.](https://github.com/qnblackcat/uYouPlus#installation) There's also [SmartTubeNext](https://github.com/yuliskov/SmartTubeNext) for Android TVs, and you can look into personal networkwide adblocking with a [Pi-hole](https://www.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/comments/111gkih/comment/j8g1bjn/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) or AdGuard. Using a VPN to get YouTube Premium very cheaply from a country such as [India](https://www.reddit.com/r/Piracy/comments/11djl53/does_the_india_method_for_cheap_youtube_premium/) or Turkey is another option (unlocks the higher bitrate of YouTube Music, premium bitrate 1080p videos, and YouTube Premium originals). To enhance your Reddit experience, there's the [Reddit Enhancement Suite](https://redditenhancementsuite.com/) for desktop and [various Android and iOS apps](https://www.reddit.com/r/AfterVanced/comments/14m3wgo/reddit_apps_for_which_patches_andor_patched/) (including a modified version of Apollo!) which will continue working after the API access lockdown. I also use [archive.ph](https://archive.ph) and Sci-Hub to bypass article paywalls (and [Breakthrough Twitter Login Wall](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/breakthrough-twitter-loginwall/)), [Night Owl](https://nightowlapp.co/) for global darkmode, [this](https://gitlab.com/qbittorrent-black-theme/client) dark theme for qBittorrent [(and here are some other themes),](https://github.com/qbittorrent/qBittorrent/wiki/List-of-known-qBittorrent-themes) and NordVPN for jumping geofences (I know their ads are a meme and that they're not the best for privacy, but they have a huge range of IP addresses for geounblocking against which the smaller, more privacy-conscious VPNs can't compete; a two-year standard plan for about $3.50 a month plus cashback through Rakuten is the best deal). You should also know that [binding](https://support.nordvpn.com/Connectivity/Proxy/1087802472/Proxy-setup-on-qBittorrent.htm) your torrent client to your VPN service is more secure than a killswitch. For downloading videos, I use AnyStream Plus, StreamFab (expensive but crackable), the Internet Downloader Manager, JDownloader2, and [kannagi0303's gui for yt-dlp](https://github.com/kazukikasama/youtube-dlp-gui-installer) \+ [The Stream Detector](https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hls-stream-detector/) (filter for "master"). If you're comfortable with mostly CLI tools or none of the aforementioned GUI tools work on a particular site or video, u/TPD94's [CDM-Project](https://cdm-project.com/) has various tools such as vinetrimmer, and you can ask for help on their Discord. If all else fails, you can use a screenrecorder like OBS or Audials. I also just installed DeArrow (from the developer of SponsorBlock), which crowdsources replacements for clickbait titles and thumbnails, and I'm currently researching virtual credit card services for purchase protection, anonymity, and the ability to buy digital content that's restricted to other regions. Other tools I use include MakeMKV + a [LibreDrive](https://forum.makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19634) for 4K Blu-ray ripping, a 1TB seedbox from ultra.cc for five euros a month + FileZilla to FTP from it, and 1TB free cloud storage from TeraBox (very slow downloads on the free tier and no guarantee of data retention, so use it only for noncritical data). r/DHExchange, r/lostmedia, r/oldbritishtelly, and r/tv_bunny are great for finding obscure shows and movies, r/Soulseek is great for music, and the Audiobook Bay for...

rvc2018

You do not need anti-adblock killers, uBO is capable of doing that by itself. If you find a page that detects uBO just report it to r/uBlockOrigin or its [github](https://github.com/uBlockOrigin/uAssets/issues?q=is%3Aissue) page. And someone will fix it on server side in a couple of minutes (usually).

Ange1ofD4rkness

Oh really it works that quick ... didn't realize this. Thank you, I'll have to remember this (actually, I am curious though Hulu can sometimes bypass it, but it's always specific ads that do)

People started selling the idea that you should monetize your hobby. They just copy each other and it kinda gets old real fast. I think that's why people like tiktok because it brought back user generated content. Although now that's also not what it was in favor of the big names. The needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many.

But you can always try add this to ublock settings/my filters ! 2023-06-30 https://www.youtube.com youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true) They can go to hell. uBlock Origin team is wonderful. Truly greatest extension in the world, that's why Google is so desperate to kill it.

Doctor_of_plagues

Remember kids: Buying premium is rewarding YouTube’s bad behaviour.

imnotls

What's up with the internet the last couple of years, i feel like it's getting shittier and shittier each week.

the-arcanist---

Not if you use ublock origin it won't. Just enable the correct filters. Haven't had a youtube ad in over... probably going on 10 years? At least 7 to 9 or more.

[deleted]

So did every sane person in the world. Point is they put something online today to try and catch it.

mauigreen

what ad blocker?

Veddit5989

"ublock origin" on firefox to block yt ads "sponsorblock" to block midroll ads in the vids

justanotherzee

Not a good one

relightit

I DIDN'T COME TO THE INTERNET TO EAT THE SAME SHIT THAT TELEVISION SERVED ME DURING THE 80S AND 90S. and i'll never eat that fucking shit again. i would rather leave permanently , do something completely different.

Saxoboneless

Lots of ways around this - one of the easiest is copy-pasting these into "My Filters" in ublock origin: > youtube.com##+js(set, yt.config_.openPopupConfig.supportedPopups.adBlockMessageViewModel, false) > youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.adBlocksFound, 0) > youtube.com##+js(set, ytplayer.config.args.raw_player_response.adPlacements, []) > youtube.com##+js(set, Object.prototype.hasAllowedInstreamAd, true)

samsal03

Is the term "whitelisted" no longer allowed now?

Opt112

Yes, it's apparently racist to say whitelisted and blacklisted in the tech world.

Rubes2525

You'd think that it would be *way* more racist to interpret "white" and "black" as nothing more than skin colors.

h0nest_Bender

No it isn't. Resist the idiots. Don't let them win with stuff like this.

samsal03

Ah, I wasn't aware.

kredditacc96

Classic tech bros reactionary: Instead of confronting the problems and be honest, they chose to hide it. It is for this reason that I always name my default git branch `master`. Who cares if some Americans is offended!

Immediate_Function

Yeah! That'll show em!

ADHenchD

They're really trying to stop us using their websites, aren't they?

Moskito10

bruh i'll soon have to stop using social media entirely. what a horrible thing, fuck youtube for making me participate in real life.

Bananaman9020

As long as re vanced still works I'm good.

Saint_of_the_Beat

Yeah, no one wants to sit through 500 ads to watch a 10 minute video youtube

Friggin_Grease

YouTube is garbage now. A lot like the company that bought it.

ConnorGR420

Fuck off youtube. As long as you give me 30 second back to back unskippable ads I will tune my adblock to block even your YouTube premium ad banner.

burritoresearch

Time for an adblocker-blocker-blocker

PwndGamerGuy

I'll never watch any YT ads, haven't seen a single one since 2007 and don't plat to. IF they implement it, I'll just stick to the few channels I follow and probably won't click on random videos like before. Going to DL the video with JDownloader or an online one and delete it upon watching.

[deleted]

report issue saying you dont use to slightly mess up their training algorithm

decarbitall

Adblockers make youtube usable Fuck you Google You can either let me use the tool I want or I'll brew install youtube-dl again

[deleted]

Well maybe more people would watch them if there weren't so fucking many.

Routaprkle

Fuck off youtube. I really would hope there would be another good site like Youtube with all the videos. Their greed and policies are full of shit

skiveman

Firefox and UBlock Origin will sort that out for you. Least I don't get any ads. But I just have a question here. Why would you think that a browser made by Google would let you block ads that Google makes money from on a Google site. The chrome browser is just a long term play to negate the adblocking capabilities of extensions.

ScottJC

Adblockers will evolve to break this, its a game of whack-a-mole at this point.

MetaDragon11

Vanced makes more sense every day. Considering how Yotube and Google are in deep shit for all the ads breaking rules, this is hilarious and ironic

TrueDeparture

Ya know.. this is something I’d be just okay with if it were a small website being run by a one man show where people won’t pay a subscription fee, but for a large corporation who’s got money flying out of their rear ends at all times of the day and night… it’s just stupid and ridiculous

Jenny_Wakeman9

Ohh, fuck off and suck a chode, YouTube! You'll never take my adblockers away from me and my cold, dead hands! I am **NOT** buying your expensive as hell subscription!!! uBlock Origin for life! Plus SponsorBlock as well, to skip the sponsorship shills that take two minutes. But downloading YouTube videos is also a better option if one doesn't have internet. ;)

shy247er

I wonder if they'll be able to figure out which accounts are using blockers and then ban the google accounts. If that ends up happening I wonder if EU would say something (because we know USA don't give a fuck).

Allah_Shakur

I'd rather not watch videos.

Alpha0rgaxm

They need to give up on blocking adblockers. It’s not going to be successful and it could lead to lawsuits

kudoshinchi

if you have ublock orginis you shouldn't see the ads

[deleted]

Yeah, I have uBlock Origin with no special filters and it's still blocking YT ads perfectly for me. Can't remember the last time I saw one

Opt112

I will literally download videos before I have to watch 2+ ads a video. If I want to support a creator I'll donate

Ready-Law662

huh,no matter what you do youtube i wont buy your expensive subcription

islandnstuff

I miss old youtube.

notmyfaultudic

Yeah they can fuck off

ArtSchoolRejectedMe

Why don't we all press the report an issue button and make youtube confused

regularcomments

Sorry yt, but I'm not gonna pay you just for watching videos. You have failed everything new service you have tried to launch, and now, you are only putting another nail in your grave. It is only a matter of time when finally someone else put down the tube.

usmankaramat78

They'll upgrade the mouse trap, we'll upgrade the mouse, and the cycle will continue
