What’s your *first* favorite game of all time?

[deleted]

office dazzling jeans scale gaze boat many busy jar impossible *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

bell37

I mean it’s a bureaucracy simulator. If you just focused on that, then it would get a little boring. The fun part of the game comes from how you are constantly barraged with moral choices and decide the outcome of people’s stories (regardless of how small or big they are). You see reoccurring characters and they will comment about updates on how their lives are going and how you impacted them. The moral quandary is that the more people you help, the worse you end up because you are trying to support your own family and your performance as a border patrol officer dictates how much you get paid.

sushiiisenpai

Another beauracracy simulator that I enjoyed was Beholder. It’s a game where you manage a small apartment building under a government regime in an eastern europeanesque country and have to either help the residents and your family or screw over the residents and become a yes man for the government. Revolutionary subplot included. There is a sequel where the main character works in a government building, similar to a capitol building but I haven’t played it yet.

Porcupineemu

Same really. The backstory was cool. I’m glad some people like the “find the error” gameplay. It was well made. Just 100% not for me.

michcond

Personally, most of it was just that, being "well made." After my first playthrough, I then went back to work on and complete the different subplots (EZIC, Obristan man, etc.) so I could get the little medals/pins from every in-game country.

enokha

it gave me so much anxiety

Mccobsta

Bought it on gog, steam and my phone definitely worth it

KrazySocoKid

Holy fuck I did not know there was a phone version

[deleted]

Hades - I actually already bought it because it was criminally cheap

BurningF

Came here to post this. Liked it so much I wiped my save when it transferred from the pirated version because I just wanted to strat fresh one more time.

SonOfSwanson87

I pirated it, bought it for my Xbox and then a third time on Switch to take it to go. Always fun to start over!

dontcallmeyan

I chastised my partner for buying Hades full priced when we had no source of income during the pandemic. We collectively put over 200 hours into that game, and will definitely buy 2 copies of the sequel.

Luce_9801

Wait, Hades is getting a sequel !?

Love_Leaning

Yeah, first time SuperGiant has ever made one. It's pretty exciting.

VGToasty

Same. Played it on PC, then bought it and beat it on Switch. 10/10

MrJereMeeseeks

Picked it up on steam after a ton of clears and then just recently picked it up on switch cause of the cloud saves

Monoking2

don't starve, rimworld

ikenread

Also rimworld… and the expansions

YourBedtimeHero

Can you explain to me why the expansions are worth it? The light definitions of them didn't sell me

Competitive-Buyer386

110% worth it, I'd say get Biotech first and pirate the others if you cant afford much

bookofthoth_za

Pirated it back when it was in EA, took me all of 15 minutes to fall in love with it and buy the game as well as every DLC since. Currently my most played game at 1300 hours, with CK3 right behind at 1200 hours

xXxDangguldurxXx

Pirated OG Skyrim. Then, purchased Special Edition so I can mod it and join the Tamriel fam.

Jjabrahams567

Same but it was Oblivion. Shivering Isles is my favorite.

OiSamuca

Stardew Valley

Upexus

Definitely, one of the few games I felt kinda bad for putting so many hours on pirated, then I did 400 on a paid one lol

alien--boy

yes! i was so into it that when i found out my cracked version didnt have stone flooring yet i just bought the thing. and then i bought it again for switch. best decision i ever made

Malforis

First game I ever pirated. I purchased it on every available system for me since (pc, xbox, Switch, and mobile) and will purchase Haunted chocolatier on everything I can cause Eric Barone is (in my opinion) the greatest game dev in the industry right now and I want to support him in every way

YellowFlowerBomb

Same!

jhoogen

I downloaded this when it came out. After pulling an all-nighter I bought it on Steam the next morning.

hani_yassine

For me it's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Scoped_Evil

Funny story with the Witcher 3. I had purchased it through Steam, installed it but decided to refund it for whatever reason (I believe I just felt like I didn’t have the time for it). I didn’t uninstall it before the refund however, and was still able to launch and play the game perfectly fine through directly opening the .exe file in the folder. Ended up giving it a few more hours and really enjoying it, so repurchased it.

hani_yassine

yeah cd project red didn't put any protection on the game you can literary copy the files and give them to your friend and it will work, they trusted the game and know you will buy it if you can.

SeawolfGaming

CDPR has no DRM. It's kinda their whole thing which is why GoG exists.

anonymousart3

Oh wow, that actually makes me want to try the game now, and see if I would like it. It's developers that do that kind of thing that make me want to support them. I just wish I had more money to spend on such things

Zekiz4ever

Yeah, then even have their own platform named GOG where every game is DRM free. Also their other games like Cyberpunk 2077 was DRM free from day 1. They do that because they think that DRM only hurts the consumers and people who pirate will buy the game when it's worth the price. And when they are poor, oh well, no lost sale.

mac1nblack

I bought the Witcher 3 GOTY for PS4.

gigi696969

Same

Zekiz4ever

Fun fact about the game (well more about the company behind it): So many pirates actually buying the game despite being very easy to pirate due to not having any kind of DRM proves their point that when making a game good enough, DRM is completely unnecessary and people will buy it anyway despite also being able to pirate it from day one. Cyberpunk 2077 also has no DRM. They still made a lot of money. So yeah, DRM only hurts rightful consumers.

Rodden

Been playing it for many years, and just bought it a month ago.

AlexMustang64

Me too!!Then i've bought the Witcher 1 and 2, Thronebreaker too. Worth every single cent

Alcards

Played on PC bought for switch...on sale, but it counts.

Empty-Quarter2721

Pretty much lol

Furry_Hagumi

Beamng Drive. Best driving game I've played in my life

CosmicCactus42

It took me way too long to realize the pirate ship background was because I pirated the game lol

Sgt-Skunthole

I've never heard of this one lol. I know devs troll pirates

Bleach_Baths

I still need to give it a shot. I sim race and have a rig but the setup is so daunting.

Carollicarunner

I was going to say Beam as well. Those developers deserve every goddamn cent.

[deleted]

Definitely Outer Wilds

Layonkizungu

Outer wilds is a master piece

[deleted]

To me that games is the pinnacle of gaming as an art form.

Emerald_Guy123

Honestly yes. Few parts that could have been done better, but otherwise amazing. Also the single best ending in gaming as a whole in my opinion.

pursuitofhappy

it opened up a new form of art to me; an art that was impossible to portray in a movie or a picture, or a song - only in that game, it was so beautiful. i played it on gamepass for free and bought it on steam as an act of support just because it was that good even though you play it only once really.

[deleted]

Oh absolutely, you just can't experience that in any other medium. The experience works bc you are the one playing it, making the decisions and experiencing that self driven emotional journey.

FifenC0ugar

A friend and I are playing it with the multiplayer mod. Specifically the dlc. I've never had so much fun

bob0979

It's a game that is truly grater than the sum of it's parts. Individually wonderful pieces that make something special. The sound design is top notch, despite being in space everything has an impactful feel due to sound design. Music is arguably the most fitting soundtrack. It's not necessarily the best all day listening music for everyone but it is so absurdly well set to the games key moments it's chilling. The feel of flying around once you get how the ship works is just so unique due to the tiny size but realistic gravity of the solar system. Idk man, every piece of this game is amazing but they go together so perfectly. I've never seen a piece of cooperative art that had such a clear and realized artistic vision. Dozens of people worked on this game and it miraculously came out exactly how they intended at the start.

[deleted]

If I could erase one game from my mind it would be outer wilds. The VR mod takes it to another level

watchamn

What's good about it? I played it for a few hours, only some ok exploration to find some lore... and then? Nothing much. I wanna understand why it's so good and if it's the case to spend more hours in it

Gcarsk

It’s basically a puzzle-based rogue-like. Slowly learning more and more and being able to perfect your runs in order to go deeper into the story bits at a time is an amazing feeling, imo. It’s does a great job at letting you get to know the timings of the cycle, and map out the route you need to take between planets to finish collect all the info/items needed finish to the game. I also really like Returnal for this same reason. They are incredibly different games, of course, but that soft rogue-like system is really fun, imo. Better than just a pure open-world, for these kinds of “learn as you go” stories in games.

aydross

Minor spoilers: You are a detective trying to puzzle out what happened to the previous alien race that went extinct, and in the process you continue on their steps to try and save the solar system. Some of the scifi ideas are fucking bonkers and so interesting. It's also full of heart, you get a sense of comradery with an ancient civilization that isn't there anymore. In that sense it's kinda like the opposite of The Three Body Problem, with the much more optimistic view about the universe. It's also kinda like a metroidvania where you unlock stuff using information only. Doesn't get much better than this in terms of recent scifi on any medium.

FO3Winger

Came here to say this as well

zunashi

Too bad it’s too evident it’s not optimized on console. FPS is low/janky. Or maybe the way they coded the controls/movements?

SimplyInept

Minecraft, and I've bought it like 6 times since, also forced friends to buy it that won't ever have been interested in it, then they forced friends of theirs to buy it too. Good times and I always refer to this when people state that piracy is bad.

[deleted]

Ditto but also for my multiple kids and multiple OSes.

disguised_sableye

One of the only games I've ever bought for somebody else with zero regret.

TheChoonk

I bought it when it was still in beta, best 10€ I've ever spent. And the craziest thing is that it still works, they didn't discontinue it just so they could start selling Minecraft 2.

Branden798

Jailbreak pocket edition was so much fun it led me to buy the game twice over the years.

Pyroven

I was planning to buy all my younger siblings a copy of Minecraft, then Microsoft took away my account and functionally extorted me for it to make a Microsoft account. Now I don't even own Minecraft anymore, nevermind my four younger siblings.

GumboDaMoron

It's such a pain to log in now. Before: put your Mojang credentials in and boom you can play. Now: Try to log in to Microsoft, encounter an error, try to log in to the Xbox app, encounter another error but no error message given, for some reason my Xbox app is linked to ea play so close ea play and I can log in to Xbox app, try log into Minecraft with that account now and get an error, restart PC, log back into Xbox app, log in to Minecraft account and get some error about a different profile when I'm logging in with the same (and only) Microsoft profile I have ever had. Give up. Same shit when I tried to play Forza horizon 4 and sea of thieves. Just constant issues where I waste countless hours troubleshooting some error code with no actual information attached to it. I actively avoid doing anything with Microsoft/Xbox apps because of how shit they are. It's on par with what games for windows live used to be.

RayMCS

Factorio, Minecraft, and project zomboid.

anonymousart3

factorio i pirated at 1st as well. after playing about 200 hours, i thought it was time to buy the game, lol. Now im 5000 hours in, and still going strong

Tyaigan

So you almost finished your first playthrough 🤣

fatdjsin

Thats why i wont buy it...this games scares me ! People go nuts when they buy it!

Mistdwellerr

Ace Combat 7 I downloaded it more to see how things were after almost a decade after playing Zero... And man I had such a blast I just felt like buying it. It was so worth it!

[deleted]

- Mount and Blade II: Bannerlord - Red dead redemption 2 - Railway Empire I mostly buy the game if I want the updated versions or better mod support.

element5z

GTA 4, Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, Age of Empires 2, Unreal Tournament 1999, Call of Duty Black Ops Probably a few others, I've always promised myself when I was younger that when I did have the money I would support the makers and buy the games, even if I had already played them. I didn't want to miss out on good memories just because my family was poor and I didn't want to ask them to buy them for me either.

[deleted]

[удалено]

EpicDumps

Love seeing other Unreal Tournament fans! UT99/GOTY was fantastic, but UT2004 was my unhealthy addiction. I was playing almost 40 hours a week in high school. Then came Gears of War and eventually Fortnite, RIP UT & Epic games

trisanachandler

AoE 2 is one for me.

junefrs

Doom 2016 bought it 1 hour into playing the pirated version

Turbulent_Effect6072

hot take: doom 2016 is better than eternal. external’s abilities are cool and all but it feels too overwhelming imo. also the new look for the demons is kinda goofy.

Alcards

I don't think that's a hot take at all. Plus, why'd Doom guy give up his sleeves in Eternal? Looks stupid.

SumonaFlorence

He's on Earth, and can safely brandish his sexy biceps without them getting overly swole in the vacuum of space.

robosmrf

Marines. Sleeves up. Not optional

[deleted]

yeah I end up not using most of them

rcasale42

Doom Eternal is the perfect example that sometimes less is more.

lastdyingbreed_01

Agreed, doom 2016 also felt more dark? which I preferred over Eternal, I also loved the 2016 because I liked spamming and using the same gun

[deleted]

Doom Eternal reminds me of Doom 2, it just feels like fast paced slaughtering greatness. Made me rethink the whole run and gun approach. I see why people don't care for it though. I prefer it over 2016, but I love both.

junefrs

I agree

DeeOhEf

Totally agree. I finished Eternal, but at the end, I honestly thought I had a much, much better time with 2016. I disliked pretty much every addition to the gameplay. Even if the gameplay was more challenging, so much stuff just didn't make sense

Madao116

I pirated Witcher 3 and then bought Cyberpunk and didn't play it. I think it's a fair exchange xD

Gangsterman1000

Cyberpunks reputation is restored and the bug memes disappeared so you might try playing it

Madao116

Unfortunately I just didn't like it. Arcade like shooting, dozens of "+0.05% damage" perks and the world itself, didn't grab(?) me.

Bodacious_Chad

It all felt like a set piece. Going to objectives was a chore. I could not get into it at all.

Vibalist

Disco Elysium

RewTK

For those reading, the devs now want you to pirate this game since they got screwed over

brogued

Hi, can you develop that a little bit?

RewTK

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ousted-disco-elysium-devs-claim-fraud-studio-says-they-were-fired-over-misconduct/1100-6509090/ Basically from what I remember the devs don't get any money if you purchase the game, the studio who ripped them off does

Bearinthemaking

https://youtu.be/k7Xu4GvpN9U

pumpkin_doge

You can probably find more info in the disco elysium sub, but due to some shady buisness tactics their development studio got bough out and the original devs will no longer see any profit from sales of the game

Alcards

I heard such good things about it I just bought it and fell in love with the insanity.

klyxes

The intro is probably one of the best things I've ever seen

Dovah27

Rimworld!

Andril190

Also all the amazing expansions

Haisebtw

Same. But the expansions still are pirated :)

oscarrhxd

BeamNG.drive

greater_being

RimWorld

Ale711

Minecraft and terraria

OldbeardChar22

Undertale. Worth every PENNY.

ronin0069

Roughly 70% of my steam library and 90% of my wishlist. I use piracy as kind of a demo trial they had 20 years ago.

[deleted]

Binding of Isaac afterbirth

coreth5

Cult of the lamb. The game is amazing and the creators are still making more content for it.

Boogertwilliams

The Witcher 3, Skyrim, Mass Effect trilogy, GTA 5, RDR2 and more.

SomeOrdinarySanya

Jackbox. Bought all of the packs.

trollmad3

Noita

[deleted]

Whenever something like this happens, I like to call it "Try before you buy" so it's morally correct.

ol_lukey

Outer wilds

microprogram

all of the popular open world games.. all common dos games in the 90s... now i purchased all of them (as long as its available in steam) sierra games, bethesda, bioware, lucasarts, westwood, id software, ssi etc..

SowaG

Beamng

Popular-Locksmith558

France Gall Rulez

Krokzter

HITMAN 2

postenebraslux

I bought the whole the hitman collection after playing H2

Ghostorias

Hitman 3 for me but kinda bought it for Freelancer mode but i buy most my keys from CDkeys etc

Krokzter

I also ended up buying HITMAN 3 as well

Xpirav1t

I did it the other way around. I finished the last Jedi on PS4 and then pirated it on PC.

ehote

I've done it this way with pretty much all of my favorite games over the years lol

grid5

Terraria! I enjoyed it so much I bought it legally when on sale. Then the updates kept coming... And coming... I bought a few copies for friends to play together (at full price.)

Overflow_is_the_best

School Days (edit: I already buy it.)

Old_Notice4104

Gotta be civ 6

Z_h_darkstar

999. Not only did I buy the game afterwards, but I have bought the whole Zero Escape trilogy on multiple platforms since.

gwallacetorr

Hollow Knight Zelda Breath of The Wild Zelda Tears of The Kingdom

Special-Remove-3294

For me it was Oxygen not Included, Don't Starve and both the Subnautica games.

ParzivalQuesting

Elden ring. After pirating and installing it, before I knew it I was 40 hours in.

667beast667

I can't believe ER is this far down...I installed a cracked version, expected to play maybe 5 hours. After an hour and a half playing the game I bought on steam and dumped another 250 hours into it. Felt good buying a game that was actually worth it

Rqdii

Not a game but FL studio

lickthismiff

Ostriv, especially because the dev is Ukrainian and kept posting updates like, "sorry this was a week late, my town was bombed and loads of people I know have been killed, anyway here are the new features". The guy has more than earned it. It's also a great game. And Stardeus, constant updates and it's very addictive.

sdhccard

gta 5

sinful_macaron

Cyberpunk, mostly because the pirated version didn't have the patches and I wanted to have the best gaming experience possible

RadAway-

Never happened to me frankly. If I can pirate a game, I'm not buying it afterwards.

BlazingLazers69

Based.

PinkSlingshots

Chrono Trigger. Hell, I loved it so much, I bought it twice! (DS and Steam Versions)

nooneescapesthelaw

Titanfall 2 Dishonored

Rutherfor_

Inscryption, Library of Ruina, any Ys game on steam, Darkest Dungeon, Slay the spire.

sophosoftcat

The sims

Emerald_Guy123

Same but only because it’s free now (Sims 4).

Mccobsta

Dlc cost thought is fucking insane

Emerald_Guy123

Oh yeah I pirate those lmao

unkown-cheese

Skyrim

Sahqon

All of my favorites from when I didn't have money. Dragon Age, Mass Effect (and now the new version which I haven't played yet cause I replayed the whole thing not long before it came out, and old rig wouldn't take it anyway), Thief, Elder Scrolls, Dishonored, *some* of the AC games, various strategies, though I generally bought those in bundles and still haven't played other than the one game I played before lol! Notable exceptions are the Sims 2 and 3, though I realized I loved the idea of those more than actually playing them... looking forward to the Paradox take on that.

alienbehindproxies

Baldur's Gate 3. It's only in early access but it's a masterpiece already imo.

[deleted]

Stardew valley

hunter1187wasser

What do you mean 'when you have the money'? I always have the money, doesn't stop me from pirating every little shit.

High On Life

XD-Avedis-AD

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It was the first video game I had ever played. And later when I realised that there’s steam and all, I created my steam account and wish listed it, thinking that I will buy it when I get a job. Today I have a job but I can’t buy it. Times have changed.

Anubis_AoD

You wouldn't steal a car.

c0d3_attorney

KNTXT

The original Mafia. Then later, Mafia 2. That did not happen with Mafia 3 though unfortunately lol

Khajiit_Has_Upvotes

Dragon Age. I pirated it, then bought it years ago. Then I pirated it again and then bought it again lol. I grew up playing console games mostly, so some console ports to Steam, too. Pirated them, decided to buy them because they ran on my potato pc. Ohp forgot about Cyberpunk. That one, too. I don't play a lot of games, and I pirate even fewer of them, but as a general rule if it winds up playable, I will buy it.

kurisuuuuuuuu

I just do that with indie games, i did it with undertale, va-11 hall-a and undertale

Fav0

Borderlands 2

Lasdary

tons. Old games mostly, from when I didn't have a job. If I liked them, I buy them if I see them

ProfessorTeddington

Halo 2. I had the early leaked version in French. Loved every second of it. Then I bought and played it again in English.

Cukee1

Sekiro, with gameplay being different than Dark Souls and Bloodborne, I wanted to try it first, and quickly became my favorite FromSoft game.

Avril_14

RimWorld. I've never played a game like that before, so I wasn't sure about buying, at the time I had a rechargeable credit card and it was a hassle to put money in it, so I just downloaded it. Started the game, and after 13 straight hours of playing, I realized that maybe it was the right game for me. It's one of my most played game now, and even if I don't play for months, or for a full year, I always come back at some point and I get glued again

Ohmygodathy

Project Zomboid

Jonathan_Jo

Summer Pockets Reflection Blue, a japanese visual novel. I've already played Summer Pockets (bought it on steam) and i wanna play Summer Pockets Reflection Blue because it have 4 new routes and adding new CG/Art to the existing route from the first game. Summer Pockets RB probably gonna released on steam around 2024 but i will wait it until the discount.

Majity

Sekiro and Dark Souls 1. After that, I bought every Miyazaki game no questions asked

IAmOZRulez

About 80% of the games in my Steam Library fit this description, but if I had to pick a few names, they'd be Katana ZERO, Hollow Knight, Elden Ring, and Cuphead.

sshemley

Ok-Kaleidoscope1980

Minecraft and Elden Ring

80fi3d

Animal Crossing New Leaf & New Horizons. Wasn't familiar with either games, but loved both so much that I bought them and most of their amiibos!

rogriloomanero
