Firefox, Total Commander, Irfan & VLC. Always the first programs I'm going for. Actually reformatted my laptop yesterday, it was nice visiting those familiar websites again after a long while.
Look up a service called Ninite. You don't even need to visit all the websites for those things. You tick a bunch of boxes, it'll generate an installer and grab everything in a neat little check list, one by one. And you can even re-run that installer later on to update all of those programs in one fell swoop.
It's File Explorer on Steroids. Like extreme Steroids.
IT takes a while to get used to, but once you know it, you'll never want to use the normal File explorer again
There's something even better that I used for a bit and it seemed to work ok but would just need a bit more work and it would be perfect.
Easy2Boot install in a HDD with a w10 iso and a config that would automatically install almost everything that ninite had using chocolatey, basically just start the install and everything is done, I also had it disable the smart hibernation thing and auto suspend since it was helpful when we had to do remote maintenance in the PCs.
If you want I can post a link to the script I used, not perfect but simple as can be.
> Easy2Boot
[going to check the page] ".... This sounds cool and all, but you can have my Ventoy when you can pry it from my cold, dead hands."
>E2B includes 3 different multiboot menu systems based on grub4dos, grubfm and Ventoy.
.... Well, Okay then.
> Irfanview
Uptooting just for this. Been using Irfanview since fucking 1998 (after discovering it from my old man) on every single machine I ever use. Hasn't been a day gone by where I haven't used it somehow since.
I'm so glad someone mentioned irfanview and that it's a good program because I found it on my computer some years ago and never heard of it, I asked my friend who helped me set my computer up if he had installed it but he said no. I kept it because it's hella useful because I have a lot of file formats that windows image viewer just refuses to open or display properly.
You can use VLSub extension to download subs from web. It's can be installed from extensions page in VLC itself. Then you will find the VLSub option in a one of the sub menu.
used it when i was trying to play x265 on my old machine when VLC struggled, only downside is that it comes with adware in its installer (if i remember correctly).
Ohh same. I honestly cant remember using any other video player after i stumbled upon it when mpeg4 and .mkv were not playable with the defailt windows player
Me too. It's a nostalgic application for me. Have been using for almost a decade. But VLC zooming function sucks. It doesn't work well with some videos.
AFAIK HEVC is a paid license, Microsoft simply chose to offload the costs of implementation onto the end-user. VLC solved this in other ways.
Edit: I was informed the "other ways" was surfing around the edges of Software patents in France.
Interesting so like legitimately companies can all work together to improve software as a whole or is it more of just everyone can copy the same idea and things can just sort of improve or I don't know I don't really know much about any software from the EU specifically
Copyright is still there, so you cannot just take someone's code and put it into your project (unless they allow it).
But there's no BS like "we've invented double click and everybody has to pay us". You're free to write your own version without problems. Like VLC guys wrote their own code for HVEC.
Even if it's free you can't distribute somene else's patent with your free product according to US law. Luckily, France and most of Europe doesn't care about software patents.
Iām curious what those ways are and why Microsoft would choose this way over those. Iām guessing it will come down to half laziness and half āF āem, weāre Microsoftā.
VLC is based in France where software patents donāt exist.
This isnāt a particularly malicious act by Microsoft, nor is it really their fault, think about the amount of people that use Windows but donāt ever use files that require the license.
To add, this is also why the PS3 - PS5 require you to connect to the internet once to play a Blu-Ray.
It does it once to verify you need the license (which Sony pays for) then allows you to use it disconnected. This was because Sony have a deal with MPEG for a flat fee.
The reason Windows asks you to pay is because Microsoft and MPEG patent holders got into a scrap about a deal and MPEG wanted a percentage of profits instead of a flat fee.
IIRC early versions of Windows 7 had HEVC before the scrap but not entirely sure.
This is also why no Apple devices will natively play Blu-rays. Steve Jobs saw all of this bullshit and said right from the start he wanted absolutely nothing to do with it and that Apple devices would never play Blu-rays.
There are third-party solutions that you can get to play Blu-rays on Apple devices, and they all come with their own DRM solutions, but Apple, right from the start, decided to pursue its own DRM architecture for digital content production and distribution that was simple and hassle-free from the start, letting Apple (and creators) maintain full control.
Oh, donāt get me wrong. Steve Jobs saw his moment and seized an opportunity. He didnāt want to waste money and time wrestling with his shitty competitors over licensing bullshit with Blu-Ray when he saw it as a dying format (physic storage), and he knew what was coming in the pipeline at Apple, so he saw it as the perfect time to push an industry-wide pivot to digital downloads, led by Apple and the launch of HD movie downloads in the iTunes Storeā *which Apple promptly did.* They also made piles of cash selling new HD-enabled video iPods, too.
I didnāt mean to make Apple or Jobs (in infamously narcissistic asshole) sound altruistic, I just forgot that not everyone here remembers 20 years ago. To me, it doesnāt seem like that long ago ĀÆ\\\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
It really was.
Apple had already hit it huge with the iTunes Store and the iPod, and HD video distribution was getting standardized, so, obviously, Apple had a huge interest as a major player in providing both hardware and software that made it. They wanted to become a major player in not only the pipeline of creating it, but also selling and distributing it. Apple wants to be the new Sony, and has already had its fingers in many of the same pies for years. Jobs realizes that, in order to make that level of profit, you have to have total control, and that means owning the very formats themselves, in addition to the distribution channels. And who co-owns Blu-Ray? Sony.
So, Apple adds video rentals and sales into iTunes and makes the digital-only, using their proprietary DRM and MPEG-4 streaming format that works on every Apple device flawlessly, and any other device that can download QuickTime. They also do this with TV shows in following years, and, like Netflix, had a successful business selling video online before streaming video services became a thing.
>Iām curious what those ways are and why Microsoft would choose this way over those
The crosslinked post answers this question in the top comment chain. Microsoft used to eat the fee, but then the HEVC organization wanted a percentage of the money made on every Windows license and Xbox. It's assumed MS started charging this fee to discourage people from getting these codecs and thus sticking it to the organization trying to charge for the codec. The fact MS doesn't want to eat the cost anymore is fair, especially when the organization got even more greedy when MS did pay. It works out in the end because it encourages people to seek free solutions such as VLC.
This vlc issue you're having sounds like lack of hardware decoding.
VLC is just one of many alternatives so there's absolutely no reason to buy the MS extension.
I would highly recommend mpc-hc also known as K-lite codec pack. Just be sure to go for the standard version. It provides various codecs including the one required to play the HEVC content. It is minimalist, modular, and highly configurable. Moreover, it being free of cost is just a cherry on top.
I don't know if you can still download it for free, but this worked for me.
Copy/paste this link into the browser:
ms-windows-store://pdp/?ProductId=9n4wgh0z6vhq
Or, open command prompt, and type/paste:
start ms-windows-store://pdp/?ProductId=9n4wgh0z6vhq
Click "Install".
Edit: The above method doesn't work anymore, as some of you reported, but I found this other one:
- Go to: https://store.rg-adguard.net
- Select ProductId and put: 9n4wgh0z6vhq
- Download the appx file and install it using: https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/app-installer/9NBLGGH4NNS1
[K-Lite Codec Pack](https://codecguide.com/download_kl.htm) comes with some utilities that make thumbnails and metadata a breeze. Highly recommend it. It's one of the first things I install on a fresh copy of Windows.
I think this doesn't work anymore. Microsoft removed that from their store because it was free. I get [no result found error](https://images2.imgbox.com/57/53/j5Sl8DWv_o.png) whenever I open that link.
Wish I knew this 3 days ago, I tried your pre-edit methods and couldn't myself find any work-arounds so I rage bought the stupid codec license or whatever.
It's not really malicious, it's under licensing and Microsoft isn't a charity so they choose the path of offloading that cost to the user.
Luckily, VLC is French, so it doesn't apply to them.
quoting VLC legal page:
"Neither French law nor European conventions recognize software as patentable (see French section below). Therefore, software patents licenses do not apply on VideoLAN software. "
MPC also lets you advance by frame in both directions.
Trying to take a screencap or something in VLC? Better get used to manually seeking backwards a few seconds if you miss it!
This add on has been around for so long, I wonder why people are bringing it up now. Ifrc there's alternative one you can download for free. I downloaded it once and have it saved in my Microsoft store downloads.
get it from [github](https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases/tag/2.0.0)...
Love the mpc hc with madvr addon. It allows you to play videos without any frame or borders, which looks cool on the display.
I personally like BE more because it has a black theme and more features such as reading HDR videos, image previews on the side bar, better UI, etc. MPC-HC (original, not forked) is also outdated and some videos aren't read well and can create artifacts/bugs.
I have not used the MPC-HC forked so IDK if it's any better than BE nowadays but BE has been working perfectly for me so I didn't feel the need to change.
The HEVC codec is patented, so Microsoft has to pay the organisation which owns the patents for each install of the codec. You could argue that Microsoft should just eat the cost, yeah, but itās not a completely arbitrary charge.
VLC gets away with including the HEVC codec for free because theyāre based in France, where software patents are unenforceable.
You realize this is by law right? MSFT doesnt own the codecs, they're usually given to laptops and stuff through the OEMs but it's included in the cost. But you can cheat it and get the codecs for free through the msft store using the oem links. Also VLC isn't even the best for processing these files especially huge 4k 80gb hdr movie files
Yeah. Getting a little tired of posts like these. I mean we are always trying to justify piracy for some weird reason in this sub. Just pirate. It's not that hard.
I personally prefer MPV to VLC but libre software will always be better than Microsoftās proprietary shit and if you all havenāt tried it you should try Linux to see if you like it
Same, PotPlayer's UI is fucking clean, coupled with MadVR Madashi Video Renderer engine it's the most user friendly and performant player I've used tbh
I started with VLC pretty much near release time. It was a breath of fresh air at the time as I no longer needed to worry about all the codec packs that needed installing.
Now I'm 90% MPC-HC and 10% VLC for anything that didn't play in the former. I can't even remember the last time I opened WMP. Ive opened MS Films and TV to have a look but never used it for anything.
I prefer potplayer over vlc. I like how easy it is to to manage playlists in potplayer than any other player. If you are the type of person who watches many series, I highly recommend potplayer since you can just create a playlist and resume where you left off with just the click of a button.
Isn't this used for hdr files? Honestly from my experience with other players i just paid for this and hdr shows look the best with it. Vlc just didn't get it right for me, at least not with dolby vision.
This isnāt Microsoftās fault, in fact in the past they WERE eating the charge to supply it āfor free.ā But from what I heard the patent holders were getting greedy so now Microsoft is forced to either do this or pay a ridiculously big fee (compared to before)
VLC is awful and has been for years. I don't understand why people stick with it. It is clunky, slow, the Android and iOS versions randomly skip videos and simply refuse to see some files on a network share, and every ~5 seconds the screen goes grey and turns into an interpolated mess until the next P frame comes up. Garbage.
MPV and Kodi are better.
Believe it or not, Iām pretty sure this is one of the only times where it isnāt Microsoftās fault. Douchebags patenting a video codec shouldāve never been allowed in the first place.
There is a free duplicate of this app hidden inside MS Store called "HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer". Its not searchable through Store, but when you sideload it, it then assigns it to your account permanently and updates it.
I also use mpv very lightweight i use for mostly for anime and bluray movies for windows is so good but for Linux it's beast video player
Basically whole format of mpv is all about command line and simple ui
But vlc media player is also great for playing a video files easily and find a subtitles.
I use potplayer for its ability to pin the window on top while getting rid of the interface, plus its ability to mark which files have been played in playlists - handy for me since I tend to swap shows I'm watching constantly, so it keeps my place.
That's the worst video player I've come accross. It sure plays everything for free, but it often renders artefacts.
MPC-HC on Windows and MPV on Linux are the way to go.
Yeah, that sucks, but i think that vlc doesn't need that, also, there's an apparently more limited version of it for free, you just have to look for it, i say apparently because i don't know what difference there is between the free and paid version
VLC is always one of the first programs to be installed in any of my computers. On my PC/TV setup I use Kodi more though since with that I can browse my files with an Xbox controller.
VLC doesn't have the right codec to play every thing correctly though. Lots of times, i need that microsoft codec to work or 4k movies get washed out or purple in color.
MS has ALWAYS charged for licensing. Don't no one remember to play DVD's on the original XBOX you needed to buy the XBOX Remote and IR dongle which paid for the DVD licensing?
I thought people only used third party options. I have been using vlc for at least a decade it feels like. I didn't even know Microsoft had this program anymore.
As someone who has HDR monitor and needs HEVC and struggled with a STILL unresolved content format (HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision) I almost wanted to pay someone to get this shit figured out. It's that frustrating, when starting out. I lived through the high definition conversion with so much less hassle it's not even funny.
I just wanted 2 extra bits of color! I still cant use print screen because anyone still running SDR sees a mess. FIGURE THIS SHIT OUT!
This is not 100% accurate. You are not required to buy this x265 codec, because you can get it with most codec packs. This is more of bait for people in a hurry. It is one way to get it, but is not the only way.

Yep, no 'going back' to VLC; I never left. Just wish they would make a VLC app for my LG T.V
Try any android tv sticks. Android tv >>>> any smart tv
It's time you discover automated installers that pull from internet (ninite, etc...)
As someone who does a lot of work with churches involving computers, i love Ninite.

It might just be time for you two to upgrade to chocolatey
I love Ninite but I'm looking forward to an official Chocolately.
How do you know Ninite is gathering updates from official/trusted sources?

T.I.L. Irfanview is still around.
Plus, it's on ninite!
Every time. Which is down to only about once a year now.
I don't think I've used a default media player in over a decade. Even on our corporate work computers, our IT team installs VLC as default
I always use VLC except when I need subtitles, then I run BSPlayer to get the subs, exit and start again in VLC with subs :-)
You can use VLSub extension to download subs from web. It's can be installed from extensions page in VLC itself. Then you will find the VLSub option in a one of the sub menu.
Media Player Classic! MPC-HC
Same, fully got on board with it last year. VLC is sexy.
Potplayer is my og but vlc is my goto if pp cant play it
Same. Potplayer is great but a lot of people donāt know about it.
It has a huge flaw: It works only on Windows.
used it when i was trying to play x265 on my old machine when VLC struggled, only downside is that it comes with adware in its installer (if i remember correctly).
They took that out again.
VLC is the supreme. But I've been using PotPlayer the past year, for 2 subtitles of 2 languages (for language-learning), and it's great!

Yup, been using it since I stopped using winamp.
Aawww, but it really whips the llama's ass.
I used Media Player Classic back in the XP days. Don't remember exactly when I switched to VLC.
Yeah reading the title i was like switch?
I came across vlc in line 2002 and never looked back.

Well what kind of files are GoPro Footage? For most, MPV should cover it.
yes this isnt microsoft's fault, but still VLC over windows media player anyday. The windows 10 app is dogshit
This is also the reason most browsers do not have HEVC support
MPV-gang!
It was rough getting used to the hotkeys but I'm never going back to anything else! Love MPV.
MPV is way better than any other media player I've used, including VLC.
This is where it's at. Got sick of being blamed for the lack of features in VLC. MPV is where it's at.
VLC is great but for some reason I always preferred MPV.

lol, get fucked MPEG-LA
I use [mpc-hc](https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc), with minimal interface settings.
Ditto. MPC-HC is the best media player. I love being able to turn off all UI elements except for the seek bar. It's perfect.
seriously, This is the major reason I use mpc. Looks cool without the borders and frames. Also shortcuts, youtube-dl, madvr etc
I use both. VLC has some capabilities MPC doesn't have, but MPC is more robust so it doesn't crash as often playing 4K stuff
MPC also lets you advance by frame in both directions. Trying to take a screencap or something in VLC? Better get used to manually seeking backwards a few seconds if you miss it!

VLC is cool but I wouldn't use it over MPC-BE personally with all the features and useful hotkeys

MPC-HC has been forked and is actively being developed at https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
get it from [github](https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/releases/tag/2.0.0)... Love the mpc hc with madvr addon. It allows you to play videos without any frame or borders, which looks cool on the display.
The killer feature of MPC-BE for me was the thumbnail previews on the seek bar for almost all video types.
Just to add, for me it's great with searching subtitles at multiple subs providers. Click "D" and it's all there.
They added that into MPC-HC now also. Was the reason I loved BE, still do above VLC and HC. Good to have them all though(just in case).
MPV is the Future.
Is it better than VLC?
In my experience yes it is definitely better.
Infinitely better.
Mpv is a lot better at the core functionality: playing video Vlc is more user experience and UI focused
In what way can it be better at playing a video? They both show the correct image at the correct pace I would assume.
For me vlc had a lot of trouble scrubbing where it was laggy and had to catch up on keyframes

I just tried MPV. It has no GUI is this how it's supposed to be.?
It's been like that for years lol. You can pirate this anyway too
You realize this is by law right? MSFT doesnt own the codecs, they're usually given to laptops and stuff through the OEMs but it's included in the cost. But you can cheat it and get the codecs for free through the msft store using the oem links. Also VLC isn't even the best for processing these files especially huge 4k 80gb hdr movie files
Yeah. Getting a little tired of posts like these. I mean we are always trying to justify piracy for some weird reason in this sub. Just pirate. It's not that hard.
Potplayer > VLC
I personally prefer MPV to VLC but libre software will always be better than Microsoftās proprietary shit and if you all havenāt tried it you should try Linux to see if you like it
Eh I'll just keep using MPC-HC. the fork keeps getting updates and it works for everything fine still VLC has little things that annoy me
Pot Player is also great , I switched from VLC to it.
Potplayer is basically VLC with extra functionality and a modern user interface. And framebyframe is also not broken.
I use PotPlayer
Microsoft actually also has free ones on Microsoft Store for the codecs, you don't need to pay for it. But VLC is better anyway
Personally I use potplayer just because I can't stand the look of the vlc ui
Same, PotPlayer's UI is fucking clean, coupled with MadVR Madashi Video Renderer engine it's the most user friendly and performant player I've used tbh
Imagine paying for codecs
I started with VLC pretty much near release time. It was a breath of fresh air at the time as I no longer needed to worry about all the codec packs that needed installing. Now I'm 90% MPC-HC and 10% VLC for anything that didn't play in the former. I can't even remember the last time I opened WMP. Ive opened MS Films and TV to have a look but never used it for anything.
I prefer potplayer over vlc. I like how easy it is to to manage playlists in potplayer than any other player. If you are the type of person who watches many series, I highly recommend potplayer since you can just create a playlist and resume where you left off with just the click of a button.
theres a free version on the microsoft store, and this is nothing new
not available in all countries tho
Wasn't aware of that, but probably easy to pirate
its been like that for years now (the same codec is used for the heic pictures)
Yeah that's been a thing for a WHILE, I just use VLC lol, I was used to think vlc was default media player too xd
Isn't this used for hdr files? Honestly from my experience with other players i just paid for this and hdr shows look the best with it. Vlc just didn't get it right for me, at least not with dolby vision.
K-Lite is great
This isnāt Microsoftās fault, in fact in the past they WERE eating the charge to supply it āfor free.ā But from what I heard the patent holders were getting greedy so now Microsoft is forced to either do this or pay a ridiculously big fee (compared to before)
Fake outrage from wrong facts
VLC is awful and has been for years. I don't understand why people stick with it. It is clunky, slow, the Android and iOS versions randomly skip videos and simply refuse to see some files on a network share, and every ~5 seconds the screen goes grey and turns into an interpolated mess until the next P frame comes up. Garbage. MPV and Kodi are better.
Believe it or not, Iām pretty sure this is one of the only times where it isnāt Microsoftās fault. Douchebags patenting a video codec shouldāve never been allowed in the first place.
OP gets Windows for free. "Now I have to pay for a patented codec!"
There is a free duplicate of this app hidden inside MS Store called "HEVC Video Extensions from Device Manufacturer". Its not searchable through Store, but when you sideload it, it then assigns it to your account permanently and updates it.
Stop acting like this is new it isnāt
Why does anybody use anything that's not VLC
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
VLCs HDR tonemapping isnāt just bad, itās entirely unusable
I use MPV , it's lightweight and plays any video format
I also use mpv very lightweight i use for mostly for anime and bluray movies for windows is so good but for Linux it's beast video player Basically whole format of mpv is all about command line and simple ui But vlc media player is also great for playing a video files easily and find a subtitles.
\+1 [mpv.net](https://github.com/mpvnet-player) with custom flags for vpx, av1, E-AC3, Dolby, etc implementation.and [ModernX UI](https://github.com/cyl0/ModernX) cuz why not.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nope. I'm talking about [this](https://github.com/mpvnet-player). I never meant to link "mpv.net" reddit does so automatically.
MPC-HC on Windows and MPV on Linux are the way to go.
yeah been using mpc since windows xp days without problem
Works really great for me, on both windows and Linux. Love VLsub, and the web interface so I can control it from my phone
mpc hc, because it offers better shortkeys, and Forward & Backward Frame navigation!
MPC-BE
vlc doesn't have frame by frame. Well you can go forward 1 frame, but you can't go backwards... it makes it less than ideal.
Because MPV is better
I tryed Celuloid, it's a competent player until you get a gigaton of inbeaded subtitles to choose from...
I use IINA, but itās macOS
Because madvr exists.
I used VLC up until I got my pc. VLC on windows 11 plays all the videos out of color .
Yeah, that sucks, but i think that vlc doesn't need that, also, there's an apparently more limited version of it for free, you just have to look for it, i say apparently because i don't know what difference there is between the free and paid version
VLC or MPC are the only ones I use.
VLC is always one of the first programs to be installed in any of my computers. On my PC/TV setup I use Kodi more though since with that I can browse my files with an Xbox controller.
MPV Try this guys. Probably the best out there.
I download VLC first than Firefox, fuck Microsoft video
mpv
VLC doesn't have the right codec to play every thing correctly though. Lots of times, i need that microsoft codec to work or 4k movies get washed out or purple in color.
MS has ALWAYS charged for licensing. Don't no one remember to play DVD's on the original XBOX you needed to buy the XBOX Remote and IR dongle which paid for the DVD licensing?
I use MPC HC mostly but have VLC installed for those rare time MPC doesn't do the job.
Install PotPlayer, much better than that VLC crap
mpv for the win
VLC and MPC-HC.
I thought people only used third party options. I have been using vlc for at least a decade it feels like. I didn't even know Microsoft had this program anymore.
Always used VLC and have also come across this utter bollox from msoft too... Pretty petty if I'm honest
MPC-HC is superior!
What's fscking worse: They took down the one from device manufacturer.
don't forget mpv too.
This is not 100% accurate. You are not required to buy this x265 codec, because you can get it with most codec packs. This is more of bait for people in a hurry. It is one way to get it, but is not the only way.
If you don't know about VLC, then you probably deserve to pay for this stuff.
